Perfect Ending to Celebration

n overtime victory by Levittown’s MacArthur High School Generals’ varsity football team served as the perfect ending for the annual homecoming celebration, held on September 17th under sunny skies. The homecoming parade began at Gardiners Avenue School, and crowds gathered along both sides of Old Jerusalem Road as the marching band, cheerleaders, student organizations, varsity athletes and the homecoming court passed by.

Scavenger Hunt Raccoon experiences school for the first time and misses his mother. Wearing handmade raccoon hats, the students went on a scavenger hunt around the building to find clues associated with the stories that would lead them to a treat at the

end. The scavenger hunt helped the preschoolers focus on their clues, locate various points of interest throughout the building and meet the building’s Star Polishers (faculty) in order to become more acclimated to Reinhard’s learning community.

Students in the third and fourth grade at Parkway Elementary School in East Meadow School District received an authentic lesson on fire prevention and safety when members of the Wantagh Fire Department visited them on September 16th to discuss and demonstrate how to properly evacuate a burning home.

Assembled in the allpurpose room and library, teachers, students K-5 and faculty learned fire safety tips and how to create an escape route and meeting location with family members, as well as how to assist firefighters when they arrive to the scene. The students participated in a safe, simulated house fire evacuation

It was a colorful start to Hispanic Heritage Month in the North Bellmore School District, where fifth-grade students at Martin Avenue School created Papel Picado projects under the direction of art teacher Jill Emmer. Using scissors and hole punchers, the students cut designs into colored strips of construction paper, and glued them together to create their finished

designs. The project is based off of the beautiful folk art that is displayed for holidays and other special occasions in Mexico. Papel Picado means puckered paper, as if a bird has pecked at something and left small holes. Ms. Emmer said that she chose the project for Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th through October 15th, as a way of celebrating the culture and teaching

students about the Spanish artists who have made significant contributions in the United States. “We always want a great project to excite them when they come back to school,” Ms. Emmer said. “It makes multiculturalism real for our students.” Later this month, students will also be creating self-portraits in the theme of Spanish artist Frida Kahlo.

the Bellmore train station. The Select Vocal Ensemble was under the direction of music teacher Emilie D’Andrilli. North Bellmore music students regularly perform at the community’s annual holiday lighting, and this was their first time they had been chosen to perform at the street festival, an event that Ms. D’Andrilli noted

that many students have been coming to for year. “The children had a great time and it was beautiful weather,” she said. “It has been a priority to me, as an educator, to bring students out into the community. I have found they have been both motivated and excited to share their musical talents at these performances.”

Since opening day, Forest Lake Elementary School students in the Wantagh have been busy reading literature in their classrooms and in a new courtyard dedicated to Dr. Seuss. Principal Anthony Ciuffo explained that Wantagh School District graduate Samantha Scarano painted the courtyard mural, and Courtyard Beautification

Committee Chair Heather Donahue spearheaded the effort to create a space where teachers and their students can come to read and discuss books. Fifth-graders also got a “taste” of their peers’ favorite reads during a Book Tasting Party. Prior to the activity, the students filled out a summary with the name of their favorite book and author. During

class, they were divided into groups and filled out a taste-testing sheet which noted the name, observations about the cover and synopsis of their peers’ novels. As experts on their own books, each student also had the opportunity to further share information about their book with the class. Teacher Katina Sullivan said the goal of the Book Tasting Party is to once again “create enthusiasm about books and reading.” In addition, Wantagh parent Jessica Marciana donated her time to paint book cover murals in the school hallway. Happy Homecoming District administrators and Board of Education trustees passed by. There was also representation from Jonas Salk Middle School and Levittown youth groups. MacArthur student Dublin Brook was named the grand marshal. Pre-game festivities were held at the MacArthur football field, beginning with the playing of the national anthem by the high school marching band. All senior football players, cheerleaders, MacEttes and members of the band and color guard

were introduced, each escorted by a parent. Before the game began, the homecoming court gathered at midfield, where Bobby Lewis and Caitlin Elia were crowned king and queen. Excitement and anticipation continued beyond the traditional 48 minutes of football, as an overtime touchdown led the Generals to its first win of the season, a 20-14 victory over the Sewanhaka Indians.

Benefit Raises Funds On Tuesday evening, North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center hosted a fundraiser for its Children’s Center at Nassau County Family Court. The event was held at Tesoro’s Ristorante, located at 967 Old Country Road in Westbury, and featured Long Island singing sensation and recent television personality, Sal

“The Voice” Valentinetti. Sal entertained the crowd with a selection of covers from the likes of the Rat Pack and Bobby Darin and was met with an enthusiastic reception. More than 60 guests came out to support the Children’s Center, and raised in excess of $13,000. The Children’s Center provides care and early learning to almost 2,000

children annually, ages 6 weeks-12 years, while their parents or guardians are in court. Executive Director Andrew Malekoff spoke about the positive impact of the Children’s Center in the community, and added “State funding cuts have caused similar facilities across the state to close, but thanks to the generous support of our donors, the Children’s

Freeport’s youth ice hockey team, the Arrows Bantam A, had a great start to the 2016-2017 season when they won 8-4 against Bronxville. The game was played at Bellmore’s Newbridge Arena Ice Rink on Saturday, September 17th. This was the first home game for the travel team which made their success even sweeter. The Bantam A team held the lead over the Westchester team for all three periods under the direction of head coach, Matt Gertler, and assistant coaches, Ken Corrao and Frank Hujber. It’s been 15 years since I last set foot on the Edward Kienle Memorial Field as a member of the Lindenhurst Class of 2000. Fifteen years of living and learning and building a life based on the foundation set forth in the schools of good old Lindy, from the playgrounds of Daniel Street Elementary School all the way on up to the hallways of Lindenhurst High School. Each year, on Homecoming weekend, I return to the site where it all began – to reminisce, to reflect, and to soak in the autumn sun with some fellow alumni. Funny thing is, I rarely run into

anyone from my own class; mostly faculty, coaches, the occasional younger sibling of someone I went to school with… I suppose the novelty wears off after the first year or two, certainly once college has been completed and “real” life begins. But for me, it is and always will be, home. The field, the bleachers, the school… the crisp fall air that signals the start of football season, Homecoming floats parading down the street and the scent of concession stand goodies wafting through the air. Lindy pride on display in all its green and white glory, indeed. Sure, there is college Homecoming and all the

festivities that come along with it as well – but the connection is not nearly as strong as the one forged in the district I called home for 13 years, 13 formative years of discovering my passions in life and gaining the confidence to pursue them. Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog, as they say in Lindy. And so I will continue to sit on those bleachers and smile, and remember all the good times. I will cheer on the home team, no matter if I recognize the faces, and find comfort in the unique bond that we all share. I will reflect upon those friendships forged and those many special moments enjoyed through the years. Go Bulldogs!

It was a day of pride as the Wantagh community gathered for the district’s annual homecoming festivities on September 17th. Fun-filled activities started with a Friday afternoon pep rally, during which the sports teams and homecoming court were introduced. Students throughout the district also displayed their Warrior pride by wearing black and gold clothing and sports jerseys. Prior to the Saturday afternoon game against the Lynbrook Owls, class floats were led down Wantagh Avenue to the football

field in a parade that included the marching band, cheerleaders, and members of the Wantagh Board of Education and administration. The theme of this year’s parade was comic superheroes and each of the classes decorated colorful floats to celebrate Avengers (juniors), Spiderman (sophomores), X-Men (freshmen) and Justice League (seniors), which won Best Float. During the halftime show, the cheerleaders and dance team motivated an already upbeat crowd. Under the direction of

Mindy Dragovich and Dan Aviles, the marching band gave a flawless performance. Seniors Cecilia Casella and Logan Hartman were then crowned homecoming king and queen to the delight of the crowd, with Paul Roemer and Ally Murphy as first runnersup and Dylan Hupert and Nicole Ninivaggi as second runners-up. The Warriors lived up to their name as they battled it out on the field against Lynbrook High School, bringing home a 31-0 victory.

Semifinalist Scholars Three students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have been named semifinalists in the 62nd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Alaina Anderson of Sanford H. Calhoun, Maximilian Bazil of John F. Kennedy and Rachel Jozwick of Wellington C. Mepham all received this

distinction. “Having students earn this recognition is a symbol of their test preparedness and academic work ethic,” said Assistant Superintendent, Curriculum and Instruction David Seinfeld. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and

scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit Program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Approximately 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers qualified as semifinalists. Finalists will be notified in February.

In keeping with the Leo Club’s mission of altruism and philanthropy, students at Wellington C. Mepham High School in BellmoreMerrick Central High School District kicked off their induction into the district’s first Leo Club by hosting a donation drive for the homeless. Sponsored by the Bellmore Lions Club, the Leos live by the motto, “we serve,” and have planned several acts of community service including visiting the Bethany House, which

assists homeless women and children. “I love helping the community,” said Amna Minhas, senior and club president. “We get to make a lot of people happy.” Club adviser Josephine Parlagreco, a Lion herself, has encouraged the members to participate in many projects such as food drives and community outreach. “She gives her heart and soul to anything she’s involved with at our school,” said Principal

Michael Harrington. This will be the largest Leo Club in the district, explained said Nina Lanci, district governor 20-K2 and school board trustee. The Lions have longassisted Mepham and the school district with projects such as Habitat for Humanity and holiday drives. “It feels so good to give back to our community,” Lanci told the room of inductees.

The College Board has recognized 212 Levittown School District students from both Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools as Advanced Placement Scholars for exceptional achievement on the May 2016 national exams. 111 students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by receiving a 3 or higher on three or more exams. 31 students received the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of 3.25 on all AP exams taken and grades of 3 or higher on four or

more of those exams. 58 students qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP exams taken and grades of 4 or higher on five or more of these exams. Clarke High School and Jordan Diamond from East Meadow High School have been recognized as being among the nation’s 16,000 semifinalists in the 2017 National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 1.6 million students entered the competition by taking the 2015 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Semifinalists are recognized with a selection

index score based on their combined scores in critical reading, mathematics and writing. To reach finalist standing, semifinalists must submit a detailed scholarship application including their academic record, participation in extracurricular activities and community engagement, leadership ability, employment, and record of honors and awards. They must also achieve an SAT score equivalent to their PSAT

score, maintain their prestigious academic performance and receive a recommendation from a high school official. In February, 15,000 semifinalists will advance as finalists for the chance to win a National Merit scholarship in the spring. Archery Permits Available Suffolk County Park Officials announced that Archery Permits will be available for purchase beginning September 26th. The Suffolk County Parks Department is pleased to offer 1,000 additional acres of hunting properties this season which is set to begin October 1st, 2016. These additional properties include parcels in the Towns of Brookhaven, Riverhead, Southampton and East Hampton, bringing the total available acreage to 10,000. By providing safe hunting opportunities, the Suffolk

County Parks Department not only meets the diverse recreational interest of its residents, but provides a responsible management tool to control deer populations in Suffolk County. Survivors of the Year The Susan G. Komen Foundation has named Levittown School District’s MacArthur High School art teacher Tammy Mayer and business teacher Nicole Savage Survivors of the Year. Both women were honored during the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K run in Central Park and with an invitation to ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange earlier this month. Since 2012, Tammy and Nicole have worked with MacArthur High School students to raise $50,000 for the foundation. “I wanted to give back

everything I received from the people who helped me,” Nicole said about her partnership with Tammy in spearheading MacArthur High School’s Pink Out Game and other school fundraising activities. “It’s not just about raising money. We need to create a dialogue about breast cancer and to encourage women to get their mammograms.” Nicole is a five-year survivor of breast cancer and Tammy contracted the disease in 2007. On October 14th, MacArthur High School will host its annual Pink Out Game. Apparel sales,

basket raffles, snack shack sales and donations will help raise additional money for the foundation. In addition, the National Art Honor Society will be painting pumpkins after school to benefit the cause. Tammy said the donations that role in each year make it a “community event.” Nicole said her goal is to help people focus on the message behind wearing pink. “Tammy and I want to keep the focus on what is important and to teach kids to look through the pink,” she said. “We don’t want them to forget what wearing pink means.”
