Joy Ma, a senior at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central School District, has been named a National Merit Semifinalist in the 2018 competition. The Merrick resident is an accomplished musician playing the French horn,

flute, piano – and even the piccolo at times. She also plays flute for the NassauSuffolk Wind Symphony. Off stage, Ma competes in fencing year-round, representing the North Shore Fencers Club, plays on Calhoun’s badminton team and writes for the

school newspaper, Pegasus. “The teachers and students have such a positive attitude about school and learning that it makes the academic experience truly enjoyable on a day-to-day basis,” Ma said. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition for recognition and scholarships that began in 1955. High school students enter the National Merit program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Approximately 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers, qualified as semifinalists. Finalists will be notified in February. Selected for AllState Eight students from the East Meadow School District have been recognized by the New York State School Music Association for their outstanding musical talents and chosen to perform in the All-State Festival at NYSSMA’s 82nd annual Winter Conference, to be held November 30th through December 3rd. An additional six students were named alternates. More than 6,500 sophomores and juniors in New York State performed in NYSSMA solo evaluation festivals last spring in the hopes of being selected for All-State. To qualify, students had to receive a score between 98 and 100 on their solo performance, judged by a NYSSMA AllState adjudicator. From East Meadow High School, Jolie Rebelo has been selected to perform violin in the string orchestra; Mary Zaradich will perform trombone in the symphony orchestra; John McGrath

In Step I had a math teacher in middle school who used to take whatever random change he had in his pockets, toss it out onto the classroom floor and proclaim, “There you go! Common cents… grab it while you can!” Nearly 15 years later, I found myself reflecting on this humorous anecdote as I typeset a press release from this same teacher. Orchestra. Nicole will be singing in the Treble Chorus as a soprano and Joseph will be singing as a bass in the Mixed Chorus. Joanne and Joy, were chosen as alternates in piccolo and violin, respectively. “We are exceedingly proud that these students were selected for the highest music honors in the state,” said Curriculum Associate for Music Vincent D’Ulisse. “We are thrilled that they are going to represent Levittown Public Schools in Rochester at the NYSSMA Winter Conference. It’s a wonderful experience for students and we are excited to be a part of it.”

East Meadow High School senior Kevin Martin has been invited to perform double bass in the symphony orchestra of the National Association for Music Education AllNational Honor Ensembles in Orlando, Florida, on November 26th-29th. The All-National Honor

Ensembles represents the top performing high school musicians across the United States in concert band, mixed choir, symphony orchestra and jazz ensemble. To qualify, Kevin participated in the AllState festival at the 2016 NYSSMA Winter

Wantagh third-grade students in Arlene Berman’s and Ann Marie Sallustro’s classes at Mandalay Elementary School are learning to adopt a growth mindset. This will assist them in positively changing and adapting their attitudes toward frustrations, school work, feelings and other personal challenges that may crop up during the

school year. During an English language arts lesson on similes, the students first compared their personal strengths by utilizing the words “like” and “as” and discussed how their personal talents helped them to shine like stars. These testimonials were then placed on decorated yellow stars and displayed in the school hallway.

Ms. Sallustro explained that the students enjoyed writing paragraphs, which explained how they had to persevere to achieve success in a particular skill or area. “The growth mindset encourages all of us to embrace challenges and to always give our best effort when things become difficult,” she noted.

Top Scholars Seniors Pantho Sayed and Aashini Shah from W.T. Clarke High School in the East Meadow School District have been recognized as being among the nation’s 16,000 semifinalists in the 63rd annual National Merit Scholarship Program. Approximately 1.6 million students entered the competition by taking the 2016 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Semifinalists are determined based on their

combined scores in critical reading, mathematics and writing. To reach finalist standing, semifinalists must submit a detailed scholarship application including their academic record, participation in extracurricular activities and community engagement, leadership ability, employment, and record of honors and awards. They must also achieve an SAT score equivalent to their PSAT score, maintain their

superlative academic performance and receive a recommendation from a high school official. In February, 15,000 semifinalists will advance as finalists for the chance to win a National Merit Scholarship in the spring. The district congratulates Pantho and Aashini on achieving this tremendous honor and wishes them the best of luck as they continue in the competition.

Honoring a Winner Railroad’s “Safety Along the Tracks” contest. She created a public service announcement that delivered the message, “There’s Nothing to Fear if you Stay Clear (of the tracks).” Those in attendance had an opportunity to view the PSA, which highlighted the number of people killed by trains in the United States

each year and that the only safe place to cross train tracks is at a train crossing. The meeting continued with Superintendent Dr. Tonie McDonald introducing Division Avenue High School senior Sonia Inderjit and MacArthur High School senior Erin Cassano. The pair will serve as the advisers and liaisons to the

superintendent of schools during the 2017-2018 school year. Inderjit is Division Avenue’s Student Council president. She has been inducted into the World Language and Math honor societies, and serves as treasurer of the Math Honor Society. Her favorite class is Science Research. She also plays

tennis, participates in the school’s food drive and will be a captain of the badminton team this year. Cassano is a Girl Scout and is currently working on her Gold Award. She is also a member of MacArthur’s Environmental Awareness Club, the winter and spring track team and participates in the Math Fair. Although the seniors

Volunteers Wanted state income tax returns to join our outstanding team of VITA volunteers.” Hempstead Town’s Department of Senior Enrichment will train recruits and assign them to work at town senior centers and local libraries during the upcoming tax preparation season (February, March and part of April 2018). The town will hold a multiday training program at the Department of Senior Enrichment, located at 200 North Franklin Street in Hempstead beginning December 4th, 2017. Volunteers are not required to hold any advanced degrees or certifications, but must have prior experience with tax return preparation, a keen sense of mathematics

and willingness to work with people. VITA volunteers must be available for at least 3 daytime hours per week during the 10-week program. “It can be very rewarding to volunteer in the VITA Program. To ensure that this program continues to enjoy its success, I urge anyone with prior experience with filing income tax returns to consider becoming a VITA preparer,” concluded Santino. Those interested in volunteering should contact the Town of Hempstead Department of Senior Enrichment at 516.485.8100, extension 7388.

Members of the Levittown School District community lined the streets as MacArthur High School celebrated their annual homecoming festivities on September 16th. High School. The bands of MacArthur High School and Jonas E. Salk Middle School serenaded onlookers as participants marched. Once at MacArthur, the district celebrated the inaugural class of the Levittown School District Hall of Fame. Honorees included four MacArthur High School graduates, Sal Carrillo, class of 1973; John Theissen, class of 1989; Sue Petersen Lubow, class of 1971 and David

Falk, class of 1968. Following the Hall of Fame ceremony, the homecoming court made its way onto the field, and seniors Kevin Tarone and Molly Huggard were crowned king and queen, respectively. Halftime performances by the cheerleaders, Macettes and band had the crowd cheering, and the MacArthur Generals gave a valiant effort against visiting Garden City, ultimately falling 27-3.

Jill Emmer, an art teacher at Martin Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District, helped firstgraders Asher Katz and Rochelle Mangels with their Dot Day projects. To celebrate International Dot Day on

Commemorating 9/11 In remembrance of September 11th, 2001, students in grades 9-12 at East Meadow High School discussed the historical impact of the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center during their social

studies classes. Teachers unfolded the tragic events of that day as they spoke about the innocent victims, police officers, firefighters and first responders who lost their lives, and the nation’s

pledge to never forget their sacrifices. Following the lessons, the classes contributed to the Twin Towers Lego display, constructed by members of the school’s Model Congress and Social

Studies Honor Society. Each student added to the structure with a red, white or blue color Lego, symbolizing the FDNY firefighters, civilians and NYPD officers who were involved.

The students also paid a visit to a 9/11 memorial outside the Mathematics corridor, that was created seven years ago through a partnership between Model Congress, the Social Studies Honor Society

and the social studies department. The memorial features two juniper trees representing the Twin Towers and a piece of debris from the attacks, encircled by American flags.

Saying Farewell It was a bittersweet day for Theresa Joseph and Maureen Rheel, two long time crossing guards at East Broadway Elementary School, who retired on September 15th. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald, East Broadway administrators, PTA members, students and families bid the two a proper farewell as they moved into the next chapter of their lives. and their families for 16 years, received a big thank you from the school community once the final bell rang on Friday afternoon. Both crossing guards, who were stationed on opposite ends of the school, were surprised by Assistant Principal Jami Anspach, PTA members and students who showed their gratitude in the form of studentmade posters, cards and balloons. Families also showed their appreciation by giving flowers and cards as a thank you for keeping them safe. When asked how they

felt about retiring after all their years at the school, Rheel shared her love of the community and how sad she was to say goodbye. “My heart is broken,” she said. “I love the teachers of East Broadway, I love the bus drivers of Levittown and I love these parents. They have become some of my closest and dearest friends. These kids are like my extended family. I love each and every one of them and I will miss them.” Joseph shared similar feelings. “I’m very lucky,” she said. “I loved my job.”

Wantagh Warriors

As varsity cheerleaders marched up Wantagh Avenue and approached the high school, their chants of “Black! Gold! Go Warriors!” grew louder. It was one of many displays of school spirit during Wantagh High School’s annual homecoming celebration on September 16th. The festivities began with a parade that featured the marching band, cheerleaders, homecoming court, floats, administrators and board of education trustee. The grand marshal was Michael Cucci who was recognized for his 18 years of service to the board.

It was a districtwide celebration, with students from elementary, middle and high school among those watching the parade and packing the stands for the homecoming football game against the Bethpage Eagles. Although the Warriors gave up the first touchdown, they showed the determination that led them to a Long Island championship last year. Wantagh went into halftime with a threepoint lead and turned that into a 24-14 win. Prior to the game, the players and coaches were honored by Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads for last year’s title run.

The halftime show opened with announcement of the homecoming king and queen, Logan von Runnen and Kyleigh Watson. Rounding out the court were Mike Henig, Nick Cerasi, Katie Gifford and Savannah Palas. The junior class won the float contest with its Food Network-themed creation. Following a wellchoreographed routine by the cheerleaders, the marching band and dance team came together for a performance, with the band playing the 1985 Gloria Estefan and Miami Sound Machine hit “Conga.”

Firsthand Account

Bellmore sixth-graders at Shore Road School heard firsthand accounts of what it was like to experience the wrath of Hurricane Harvey, which pummeled coastal cities of Texas in August. Houston residents Christopher Baeza, son of sixth-grade teacher Phinola Baeza, and his fiancé and emergency room doctor, Mina Tran, discussed their personal experiences

with the category 4 storm. The speakers made comparisons between Hurricane Harvey and Superstorm Sandy, noting how the geographic landscape had an influence on the resulting damage. During the assembly, the students asked questions about how the couple prepared for the storm, what they took with them upon evacuating, whether their apartment complex

was damaged and if Dr. Tran believed the governor of Texas was correct in releasing water from the reservoir. Ms. Baeza said this assembly precedes a unit on natural disasters, which will be studied later in the school year. “The students will now have a firsthand account of Hurricane Harvey when they discuss natural disasters this coming spring,” she noted.

It is the beginning of a new tradition in the Levittown School District, as a Hall of Fame has been established to honor and celebrate high school alumni who have touched the lives of many. Before the MacArthur High School homecoming game on September 16th, four MacArthur graduates were officially inducted into the district’s Hall of Fame. Surrounded by community members, administrators, faculty and students, the honorees were announced on the football field during the pre-game homecoming festivities and were presented with an award for being named 2017 inaugural inductees. Honorees included Sal Carrillo, a 1973 MacArthur graduate who owns Sal’s Place on Hicksville Road; John Theissen, a 1989 MacArthur graduate who

founded the John Theissen Children’s Foundation; Sue Petersen Lubow, a 1971 MacArthur graduate who was the first female to become an athletic director at any U.S. federal service academy across the nation; and David Falk, a 1968 MacArthur graduate who became one of the premier sports agents in the nation, most notably negotiating the most lucrative contract (at the time) in NBA history for his client, Patrick Ewing of the New York Knicks. He also represented NBA great Michael Jordan. Due to Lubow’s passing in 2015, her mother Hazel, husband Stewart and daughter Sarah were present to receive the award in her memory. Falk was unable to attend the ceremony, but was recognized for his impressive accomplishments. He will

be the keynote speaker at MacArthur High School’s graduation this Spring. “Individuals are selected for the Levittown Hall of Fame based on contributions in a variety of areas, including music, the arts, science, education, athletics, philanthropy and others,” Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Todd Winch said. “We are so proud to recognize the contributions of these individuals to our broader society as they are examples of what we mean when we say ‘success for every student.’” The district will induct the remainder of the Hall of Fame honorees from both Levittown Memorial High School and Division Avenue High School at Division Avenue’s homecoming on October 14th.
