In addition to being one of only 20 students to earn a Scholar-Artist designation by the Long Island Arts Alliance, Bethpage High School senior Michelle Zheng was honored with the highest overall score for her portfolio. The prestigious award carries with it the highest possible level of media attention for students and for their district art programs. Zheng was the top of art students on Long Island that met the criteria of an unweighted average of at least 90 and a portfolio submission containing 10 works of art. The Most Interesting Person in the Room Who you were, who you are, and who you will be are three different people.” - Unknown In my early twenties I transitioned from self-avowed tomboy to ultra-feminine girly girl, seemingly overnight, thanks to nature taking its course and queuing in to the fact that my appearance brought me attention. My visage not only brought compliments, but also some much-needed pocket money, both during and after college, when I found work as a model. I can even recall on one occasion, literally stopping traffic. No, I’m not kidding. A gentleman stopped his car in the middle of a busy street in Brooklyn to attempt to flirt with me as I was crossing the bustling thoroughfare, bringing the traffic behind him to a midafternoon crawl. That was twentythree years ago. I was twenty-one years old. When I look back on those years that seem like a lifetime ago, the shell may have been spectacular, but inside, I’m afraid, things were not. Had you asked me who I was back then, I likely would have
struggled to answer. Had you asked if I could write, I would have shrugged my shoulders and given you an “I dunno” glance. Younger women in our culture are often conditioned to believe that our value lies in youth and beauty. It’s an unfortunate societal ill that keeps so many young women from developing a richness of character, a boldness of spirit, and from nurturing our most precious abilities. Shortly after turning thirty, I conducted one of my first interviews as an entertainment journalist, with The View co-host, Joy Behar. Here I was, thinking I was a mature adult, when Joy said to me, “You know, your thirties is a great time to be honest with yourself so that your forties can be wonderful.” I realized that, to her, I was but a child. I was perplexed by her statement then, but I understand it now. It was in my thirties that I began to write professionally, I began to delve into reading, and I read everything I could get my hands on. I started keeping a journal, and I set about the business of getting to know myself, because
I had been a virtual stranger to myself in my twenties. It was also in my thirties that I got married, had my son, lost my grandparents, got divorced, and had to pick myself up and dust myself off. Life happened, and it stripped away the varnish and revealed character, humor, creativity, compassion and depth. In my twenties I gleaned satisfaction from being considered the hottest person in the room. In my mid-thirties, I began to experience a feeling of insecurity at the realization that I will never be twenty-one again and will most likely never be the hottest one in the room. Now, when I enter a room, I am aware that my skin is not quite as flawless, my waist not quite as tiny, and I have a few wrinkles under my belt; not to mention my broken nose (Long story! It involves a six-year old, a Shih Tzu and a toy). But if you were to ask me how I feel now, my feeling is that I would much rather be the most interesting person in the room.

Celebrating Italian Heritage The Annual New York Grand Lodge, Order Sons and Daughters of Italy in America, Long Island Columbus Day Parade will step off in Huntington on Sunday October 7th. Many members of the NYS OSDIA from across Long Island will join in the festivities marking the organization’s 113th anniversary. The event provides the ideal backdrop to celebrate Italian heritage, culture and the vast contributions made by people of Italian ancestry. Green, red and white will
be the colors of the day as spectators are sure to revel in Italian-American pride, while taking in the authentic Italian costumes and listening to the talented high school marching bands. The theme for this year’s parade is Columbus … The Legacy Continues in 2018! Members of over twenty-four lodges in Nassau and Suffolk will be holding their banners and marching with pride during the parade, which coincides with the annual Long Island Fall festival at
Heckscher State park. The Town of Huntington and the Huntington Township Chamber of Commerce will host the Parade. Parade Chairman Keith Wilson, who has been organizing the event for the past six years, said “We’re looking forward to a great turnout again this year for the 20th anniversary of the parade! Supporting Public Education At a September 17th rally in support of public school education, Senator John Brooks was joined by dozens of teachers, local school board members, parents, and students on the sidewalk of Merrick Avenue Middle School in North Merrick, as he demanded more support for Long Island public education and students. Senator Brooks, a public school parent and former school board vicepresident, has a history of fighting for more school
funding. He has demanded passage of legislation to end the practice of forcing educators to teach to highstakes tests, rather than innovating and helping their students to learn. This bill, S.8301, was held up by the Senate Republican Majority despite having overwhelming support in the State Legislature. Senator Brooks has been a vocal proponent for the passage of Senate Bill S.8301.
The bill, sponsored by a Republican Senator and 54 other members of the 63-member Senate, was previously not allowed before the full Senate for a vote. This legislation would have ended the practice of requiring teachers to be evaluated based on highstakes, standardized tests. Senator Brooks, a sponsor of the legislation, has pledged to help pass it when he is re-elected to the State Senate this November.

Bethpage Honorary Life Award The Central Boulevard Elementary School ParentTeacher Association of the Bethpage Union Free School District recognized kindergarten teacher Jennifer Dittrich on September 13th, with the Honorary Life Award for her dedication and enthusiasm in the district for the past 17 years. Ms. Dittrich was nominated for and presented with the PTA award, voted on annually by the parents of Central
Boulevard, based on many variables that include her positivity, energy, understanding, perseverance and hard work. After spending the better part of four years as a firstgrade inclusion teacher in the East Flatbush school district, Ms. Dittrich came to Bethpage in 2001. She earned a degree in elementary education from the University of Scranton and a master’s degree in special education from LIU
C.W. Post. On the night of the award ceremony, Central Boulevard PTA President Theresa Re praised Ms. Dittrich. “This evening we celebrate a truly amazing woman and teacher, someone who has been a pillar of support over the last 17 years with our school,” she said. The district congratulates Ms. Dittrich on this well-deserved honor and recognition.
After the tragic loss of beloved Lee Road Elementary School music teacher Dr. Brian LaClair last school year, Nicole Steiner, one of his long time students and a current sixth grader at Jonas E. Salk Middle School, wanted to keep his memory alive for the Levittown community in a special way. Steiner raised money through the sale of rubber bracelets inscribed with the words “In Loving Memory of Dr. LaClair, Our Beloved Music Teacher.” Proceeds were used to donate a bench and plant a tree in
his honor on the grounds of Lee Road Elementary School. A few days after Dr. LaClair’s passing, Nicole Steiner had the idea to make the bracelets as a way to remember her teacher whom she admired. After speaking with Lee Road Elementary School’s Principal Anthony Goss, Steiner’s bracelet idea was approved. She created a flyer which was then approved by the Levittown Board of Education for her bracelet sale, and the news quickly spread to faculty and students. Each bracelet sold for $3, and
Steiner was shocked by the outpouring of support and positive response by the school community. “I wanted to raise money so that the school could buy something that would remind students of how great a teacher Dr. LaClair was,” said Steiner. “The tree (and bench) is now where the kids come out to recess, so I think that’s a perfect spot because everyone can see it and remember how Dr. LaClair changed the school and helped us realize that music is so important to everybody.”

Through their One Voice, One Message program, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District added a third day to their community service-driven efforts in honor of 9/11. The districtwide Day of Remembrance included reflection, donations and author visits. “I hope that this date will always be a reminder of the strength and resilience of Americans in the days immediately following September 11, 2001, and the importance of volunteerism and giving service to your community,” wrote Sanford H. Calhoun High School Principal Nicole Hollings in an email to parents and guardians. “Even the smallest acts of service and the simplest acts of kindness are a way to honor those lost, and reclaim the spirit of unity that followed September 11, 2001.” Through their English classes, students in all six buildings collected toiletry items to be donated to homeless veterans. “We thank our local first responders for their dedication to protecting our community,” said
John F. Kennedy Principal Gerard Owenburg. “We also remember the many Americans who have served, and are currently serving, in our nation’s military; many of whom enlisted as a response to the 9/11 attacks.” On various days, students at Merrick Avenue and Grand Avenue middle schools participated in a gallery walk, reflecting on images of memorials from 9/11 to answer the question, “how do people respond to tragedy?” All schools also observed a moment of silence on September 12th, as schools were closed in observance of Rosh Hashanah on September 11th. In buildings, students then transitioned between periods in silence as well. “This allowed everyone to reflect and pay respect to those lost on September 11th,” said Wellington C. Mepham High School Principal Eric Gómez. On September 14th, author Gae Polisner visited Calhoun to discuss her book, The Memory of Things, a novel about 9/11 which was a schoolwide summer reading
assignment. Merrick Avenue also welcomed author, Nora Raleigh Baskin, who wrote Nine, Ten: A September 11 Story, which was the summer reading selection for incoming seventhgraders. Baskin held a Q&A and book signing after each presentation. The book is about the 24 hours before 9/11 that unfolded for four very different children. “I wrote this book to show that 9/11 didn’t just happen to those that live in New York City,” Baskin said. “This was the first event that was broadcast on television before we knew what was happening. People everywhere in the country began [wondering]where it was going to be next. This was a trauma that everyone experienced.” She also touched on themes of kindness and interconnectivity. “We hope students learned about compassion, respect and enduring strength in the face of tragedy,” said Adeline Atkins, a district English chairperson.
LEVITTOWN HOMECOMING The Levittown Public Schools invites friends, families and community members to join in Division Avenue High School’s annual homecoming festivities on September 28th. The Blue Dragons will play the Glen Cove High School Big Red during the school’s big football game at 7:30 p.m. To kick off the festivities, the school will showcase their spirit with a parade at 4:30 p.m., starting from Northside Elementary School and ending at Division Avenue High School. The parade will feature Division Avenue freshmen, sophomores,
juniors and seniors, high school marching band, Wisdom Lane marching band, homecoming court, kickline and the cheerleading team. Following the parade, a special flower ceremony to honor the senior athletes will be conducted at 5:15 p.m. on the football field. At 7 p.m., prior to the beginning of the big game, four Levittown alumni who have made an impact on the community and beyond will be inducted into the Levittown Public Schools Hall of Fame. This year’s inductees from Division Avenue High School will include
Thomas Hutchison, Holmes Sterling Morrison and Leonard Wein. Levittown Memorial High School graduate Maureen “Moe” Tucker will also be inducted during the ceremony. The kickoff will begin at 7:30 p.m. and feature a variety of concession stands including food, apparel, face painting and more. In addition, half time will include the homecoming court and king and queen crowning. Attendees will also enjoy performances by the cheerleading team, kickline and marching band.
