From 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. patrons can visit with representatives from several agencies and consult with health care providers to obtain information and valuable resources for aging well. Light refreshments will be served. Senior ID cards (ages 65+) sponsored by Senator Kevin Thomas and issued by the Town of Hempstead Clerk Sylvia Cabana’s Office will be processed from

These cards have your photo and contain vital information that in an emergency can be accessed quickly. Please remember to bring family & doctor names and numbers, and medications & allergies you want listed. There is no appointment necessary to obtain a card. Patrons can receive flu, pneumonia, and shingles immunization shots given by the Levittown CVS Pharmacy and also have their hearing
screened by the Bellmore Beltone Hearing Center. Appointment times are available, but not necessary. No appointments are necessary to receive posture screenings from the Levittown NYCC Health Center, vision screenings from Levittown CVS Optical Center, or to shred unwanted documents. The expo will end with entertainment by John Ciotta from 2:00-3:00 p.m. (tickets required). Alumni Association Donates Waterfall
The John F. Kennedy High School Alumni Association continues to give back give back to the school community, further enriching student life on campus. The group recently gifted the school in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District a waterfall
as part of the school courtyard beautification project. “The new waterfall enhances what is becoming the centerpiece of our campus,” explained Principal Gerard Owenburg. Last year, the association assisted with a new paved
patio and the construction of the Lorraine Poppe Pavilion, in honor of the late former principal. “Our students have already begun to enjoy this space as we have seating for approximately 30 students to utilize the courtyard during lunch periods and after school,” he added.

Ronda Gross, RN, MSN, vice president of Northwell NetworkCare and Mark Jarrett, MD, SVP, chief quality officer for Northwell Health, have each received the Doctor Chandler award from the New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association (PBA), in recognition of their outstanding medical expertise and development of the highest level of care for New York State Troopers and their families. Both Ms. Gross and Dr. Jarrett have worked with the State Trooper Surgeons, a division of the official union of New York State Troopers – the NYS Troopers PBA, for several years. They have each played a direct role in the creation of the PBA’s Statewide Health Care Navigation Service, providing necessary assistance, to some 15,000 Troopers and their family members. In doing so, both Ms. Gross and Dr. Jarrett have protected those who protect the people of New York. Ronda Gross, who serves as a medical liaison to the medical care team, has played a direct role in guiding access to care for many NYS Troopers. Her relationship with the New York State Troopers began in September of 2015 when she was asked to initiate a referral relationship with their organization. In response to that request, Ms. Gross created the NYS Troopers and PBA Hotline a dedicated line to the clinical care team of Northwell registered nurses available 24/7 to assist New York State Troopers. NYS Trooper Sergeant John Antonelli serves as an example of this collaborative relationship. After sustaining critical injuries in the line of duty, Sgt. Antonelli underwent several complex surgeries at Lenox Hill Hospital. From the beginning of
his health crisis, Ms. Gross and her team took the lead in organizing his hospital stay, scheduling his medical appointments and surgeries, even participated in a Trooper escort upon discharge. It was thanks to the ongoing collaboration of each team involved in his care that, Sgt. Antonelli was able to leave the hospital after five days of inpatient care on his own to continue his recovery at home. “In health care we’re here to serve, much like the New York State Troopers protect and serve,” said Ronda. Gross. “Receiving this award is an honor that validates what we do every day at Northwell NetworkCare, providing the best possible care for everyone.” Dr. Mark Jarrett, who served as a Trooper Surgeon for the past four years, is now a chief medical administrator on the advisory board of the State Trooper Surgeons program. In this capacity, Dr. Jarrett was instrumental in developing a transport system for Troopers in need, either moving them from one health system location to another or bringing them home following hospitalization. In addition, Dr. Jarrett has also served on the NYS Troopers business leadership committee. “We are honored to receive this award from the NYS Troopers PBA,” said Dr. Jarrett, “The opportunity to help those who serve and their families is our reward.” “Northwell Health continues to be a stellar option for many of our NYS Troopers and we sincerely appreciate the relationships we have built with Ronda Gross and Dr. Mark Jarrett,” said Michael Brooks, Director of Medical Operations for the State Trooper Surgeons
Program. “They have both played an invaluable role in developing key communication protocols for our healthcare navigation program, helping patients gain access to the right care at the right time. Sarju Accepted To Prestigious Program onia Sarju, a senior at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District, is one of only 14 students across Long Island to be accepted into the prestigious Partners for Future program at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Sarju will be completing 10 hours of work from September
to March under the mentorship of a postdoctoral researcher and then participate in a final symposium where she will present her research. “I’m interested to be able to know how things around us work on a molecular level,” Sarju explained about her passion for science. She hopes to attend medical school in the
future and later become a pathologist. Sarju’s Advanced Science Research teacher, Christine Boyce, and her AP Biology teacher, Kim Lascarides, met with Sonia’s mentor and toured the laboratory during the program’s opening reception on Sept. 9.

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Judy was a local wish recipient from Kings Park. Her wish was to visit her mother in Rochester and take her to her favorite restaurant. Judy received round-trip plane tickets, a hotel stay, a car rental and a gift certificate to her mother’s favorite restaurant from this foundation! The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www. twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available).

7 Ways Newspapers Benefit Students
Classrooms have come a long way since the days when pioneering settlers would send their children to single-room schoolhouses. Modern classrooms might be technical marvels, but one less flashy learning tool remains as valuable as ever. Newspapers might not be as glamorous as tablets or other gadgets, but they are still an invaluable resource to educators and students. The following are seven ways in which newspapers in the classroom can benefit students. 1. Newspapers build vocabulary. Numerous studies have found that reading can improve youngsters’ vocabulary. Each day, newspapers are filled with fresh stories that can introduce kids to new words, helping them to strengthen their vocabularies and make them more effective communicators. 2. The East Meadow School District and W.T. Clarke High School community gathered on Sept. 14 for the John Boyle Memorial Ceremony and Memorial Game as the varsity football team played East Rockaway. Members of coach Boyle’s family, the board of education, the Coach John Boyle Memorial Fund, Inc. Committee and both teams gathered on the field for a full presentation ceremony.
Committee chairman Tony Caiazza, a 1976 graduate of W.T. Clarke, opened the proceedings by thanking all of those who assisted in bringing this ceremony together before handing off to Bob Gorman, former teacher and coach. “Thousands of Clarke students benefitted from this wonderful man,” said Mr. Gorman. At the conclusion of the ceremony, coach Boyle’s daughter, Fallon,
and sisters Nancy, Eileen and Jane rang the Boyle victory bell. Coach Boyle’s wife, Gina, and current varsity football coach, Tim O’Malley, unveiled a Ram statue dedicated to the memory of coach Boyle. The statue was created through an alumni driven fundraising campaign. The district thanks the committee and everyone who helped to create a special ceremony to honor coach Boyle.
3. Newspapers promote critical thinking. Newspaper reporters are trained to objectively report the news, sharing facts without allowing their own opinions to influence their stories. Educators can choose stories from the newspaper to serve as catalysts for discussions that focus not just on the facts listed in the story, but what might be behind them. Such discussions can help youngsters develop their critical thinking skills. 4. Newspapers bring ideas and current events to life. Many children are aware of major world events, even if they don’t know or understand the details. Newspaper articles about world events can be used as avenues to discussions about what’s going on in the world. 5. Newspapers build global awareness. Customized newsfeeds funneled through social media outlets can make it hard for young people to recognize and understand the world beyond their own communities and interests. Each days, newspapers include local, national and international stories that can illustrate to kids that
there’s a world beyond their own. 6. Newspapers promote social consciousness. Without newspapers, young people may never be exposed to the social issues facing their own communities or those issues that are affecting people across the country and the world. Newspapers provide unbiased exposure to such issues, potentially leading youngsters to further explore topics that are shaping their world and even encouraging them to form their own opinions. 7. Newspapers make learning fun. According to a 2017 report from Common Sense Media, kids younger than eight spend an average of two hours and 19 minutes per day looking at screens. Newspapers provide a welcome break from tablets, smartphones and computers, and kids may have fun flipping pages and getting a little ink on their hands. Newspapers remain invaluable resources that can benefit students in myriad ways.
