Bennett Pavilion at Hempstead Town Hall. Say What? I am the queen of misunderstanding song lyrics. Which, for someone who has what I would call a fairly deep appreciation for words, is a bit odd. It just goes to show that the art of enunciation is going the way of cassette tapes and CDs – lost, down the drain, nonexistent. It’s funny, with the advent of apps like Pandora and Spotify, most lyrics are just a glance away. To say my interpretation of them

has been slightly off is putting it mildly. Pearl Jam? Forget it. Read the lyrics – pure poetry; listen to them – and you’re left a bit confused. Rap is another genre that I’ve always had a problem translating. While the delivery may be impressive, there are times when you question whether what you’re listening to is English or not. Listen to the censored version and, well, there goes most of the lyrics altogether. Country, while one of my least favorite choices

– please, no hate mail from the country lovers – seems to have it right when it comes to properly conveying the message at hand. If only the sound was a bit less… twangy. Ah, but that’s what makes the musical merrygo-round so fun, isn’t it? Styles for everyone, and a million different ways to access them. What did we do before all this technology? Oh right, we listened to the radio and misunderstood the lyrics. The good old days.

Landmark Status Granted Preserving the history of Hempstead Town, which was established more than 370 years ago, is an ongoing priority for Supervisor Kate Murray, Councilwoman Angie Cullin, Councilman Gary Hudes and the Town Board. Recently, the Town Board strengthened that historical legacy by voting to officially landmark a classic Victorian-style home in Bellmore known as the Charles A. Frisch House. Landmark status prevents any prospective development or alteration at the site without the consent of the Town Landmarks Preservation Commission. The house, located at 2668 Martin Avenue in Bellmore, was built in 1909 by Charles A. Frisch, a local entrepreneur who spearheaded the development of neighborhoods in Bellmore.

“As we work to enhance the quality-of-life of neighbors for generations to come, we also recognize how important it is to preserve our cherished past,” Murray said. “This site serves as a proud symbol of Bellmore’s rich history, and we’re proud to add it to a long list of landmarks in America’s largest township.” Reports of Frisch’s business dealings, documented in historical newspaper archives, detailed his role in building bungalows at the former High Hill Beach – located on the current Jones Beach property – and his ownership of Hotel Clarkson, which was located at the intersection of Newbridge Road and Bellmore Avenue. Hempstead Town’s Landmarks Preservation Commission has worked closely with the current

owner of the property, who has already completed a historically correct restoration of the interior portions of the home. “We’re proud to do everything in our power to protect the legacy of this historic home,” Cullin said. “This classic home truly is a Bellmore landmark, and now that we’ve made it official, its historic nature will be preserved for generations to come,” Hudes added. “As America’s largest township, each hamlet, village and neighborhood has its own rich history,” Murray said. “In this case, a treasured piece of Bellmore’s past has been preserved. As we set the building blocks for our future, we’ll continue to protect the heralded past of Hempstead Town that dates back to 1644.”

Reward School For the third year in a row, Seaford High School has been recognized as a Reward School for high achievement by New York State Education Commissioner John B. King, Jr. “To earn this distinction once again, in a time when education is undergoing great changes, is a true testament to the talent and dedication of our hardworking faculty, administration, students and parents,” said Superintendent Brian L. Conboy. A Reward School is identified by outstanding student achievement or growth with no significant

gaps in achievement among student subgroups. Reward Schools must be among the top 20 percent of schools in the state for English language arts (ELA) and math performance over the last two years or be among the top 10 percent of schools in ELA and math performance gains the 2012-2013 school year. They also must have made adequate yearly progress over the past two years for all groups of students on all measures, including a 95 percent participation rate on ELA and math assessments; and not have any large gaps in student performance.

Reward Schools are classified as either “highest performing” or “highest progressing.” Seaford High School received its second nod as a highest performing school, rising above its prior distinction as a highest progressing school. Schools are identified as highest performing based on school-wide proficiency and subgroup proficiency on state assessments and by graduation rates. Schools that are considered highest progressing have shown the highest levels of student growth over the past three years.

Letters Of Intent Signed Four Division Avenue High School seniors have signed national letters of intent to play baseball at local universities next fall. All four players were instrumental in winning the 2014 Nassau County Championship. Tyler Epple has committed to play baseball at Concordia University. He is a two-year starter as third baseman for the Blue Dragons and was named All-Conference as a junior player. Epple currently boasts a batting average of .357 with 19 RBIs and 24 runs scored.

Three-year starting pitcher and outfielder Anthony Papa committed to LIU Post next fall. Papa was named All-County as a sophomore and All-State third team as a junior. His record is currently 9-0 with a 1.48 ERA, 0.91 WHIP and five complete games. Offensively, Papa batted .384 with 34 RBIs, 36 runs scored, two homeruns and a .605 slugging percentage. LIU Post has also signed Joe Piscitelli, a threeyear starting outfielder for Division. During the 2014 season, Piscitelli had a .380 average, scored 20

runs and maintained a .500 slugging percentage. In addition, James Varela has committed to play for LIU Post next fall. A twoyear starter as a pitcher and outfielder, Varela was named All-Conference as a junior. His current record is 6-1 with a 1.05 ERA, REWARD SCHOOL - Seaford High School Principal Scott Bersin, center, and 57 strikeouts, 1.10 WHIP Assistant Principals Anthony Allison and Jessica Sventoraitis display the Reward and two shutouts. On the School Certificate of Achievement from the State Education Department. offensive front, he was batting .363 with 22 RBIs and scored 21 runs. The district wishes these players much success in their college career, as well as a successful 2015 spring season.

are great and all, but nobody could replace my mom, dad and brother. They are the foundation to what will hopefully be my success. My mom and dad are the driving force in my life. I can’t wait until I see them during Parents’ Weekend, because somebody needs to do my laundry! Although I’m just kidding about the laundry, the idea that I miss the little things about home rings true. I miss my bed. I miss my car. I miss my old life. With that being said, I’m really liking the new life which I have formed here.

The kids on my floor are like family to me, and I’ve only been here a month. We are all in this together, and the communal sense of commitment has brought us closer together. I feel as though we know what each of us are going through, so bonds have become strengthened. The guys on my rugby team have been more than friendly as well. We are a team, and during games I can always expect them to have my back. I’m very excited to see what the rest of my four years of college have to offer.

College is unlike anything I’ve ever gone through. High school was four years of academic grinding, while college has proven to be pretty awesome. The workload isn’t too bad so far, which has allowed me to get involved on campus. I’m on the rugby team, I’ve joined a few clubs, and I’m writing for the school newspaper. The 2014 Pink Rock Classic golf tournament will take place on Monday, October 6th at the Port Jefferson Country Club at Harbor Hills. The event benefits the Fund for the Uninsured at the Fortunato Breast Health Center at John T. Mather Memorial Hospital. The Fund for the Uninsured was established to provide access to state-of-the-art breast screenings and diagnostic procedures for patients without health insurance. Jean Larsen of Stony Brook, a breast cancer survivor who faced a huge personal debt from battling the disease, came up with the idea of the Pink Rock Classic to help others in a similar situation. She and her friend and former coworker Walter Hurney put together the Pink Rock Classic golf tournament. Now in its seventh year, the event has raised more

Prior to the festival, State Parks will stock South and McDonald Ponds in Hempstead Lake State Park with hundreds of brook and rainbow trout. DEC also stocks several water bodies in Nassau and Suffolk counties including: Upper Twin Pond, Oyster Bay Mill Pond, Massapequa Reservoir and 12 other Suffolk County lakes with brown trout. These stockings will occur by October 17th and will provide excellent prospects for fall fishing. A second DEC stocking will occur by November 7th. The annual Fall Family Fishing Festival will be held on Saturday, October 18th, at Hempstead Lake State Park from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Regional Director Peter A. Scully announced today. DEC’s I FISH NY Program and Freshwater Fisheries Unit are sponsoring the event along with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (State Parks). “The Fall Family Fishing Festival is a great way to enjoy the outdoors and learn something about the great sport of freshwater fishing,” Scully said. “As part of Governor Cuomo’s NY is Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative, the festival combines the opportunity to fish with a variety of children’s activities to provide a rewarding family experience.” No fishing license is required for this event.
