On Teddy Bear Day, the students brought their furry friends to the classroom to assist them in English language arts and mathematics lessons. After sorting and counting the bears according to different attributes, the students compared the stuffed animals’ sizes and colors.

Ushering in the Equinox By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Ok, now it’s official. Autumn can commence. Why? Because today is the actual autumnal equinox, the moment all those fall fanatics have been eagerly anticipating since, well, probably since last autumn. I know September 1st is the unofficial introduction of all things pumpkin spice, but, believe it or not, there are a few more factors to consider when introducing a new season. For instance, cooler weather, the start of football and “Sunday Fundays,” playoff baseball, fall TV premieres… all things that were absent as of September 1st. And, while Halloween merchandise

has been on the shelves since July, guess what? It’s still over a month away. And Christmas – don’t even get me started on that. Three months to go. Three MONTHS. Plenty of time. No need to make those lists and check them twice quite yet. And yet… as I write this, the temperature sits at a positively summery 81º - perfect for pumpkin picking, hayrides and corn mazes… if all those things took place on a beach. But no worries, the season is still young – plenty of time for the autumn chill to settle in and the boots and scarves to be dragged out of the closet for that first brisk afternoon walk through the fallen foliage.

‘Tis the season of fall festivals and Oktoberfest celebrations, of raking and home improvement projects, of toasty evenings spent curled up with a (pumpkin) spiced latte and a book. Sure, it has its benefits. If you like that sort of thing. Me, I’ll be the one walking along the shoreline at the beach, camera (or iPhone) in hand, trying to capture the perfect autumnal sunset shot. I’ll get into the spirit eventually. Maybe once October hits. I might even check out the Halloween merchandise. And start making my Christmas list… Nah, who am I kidding. That’s what Black Friday is for.

Patriotism Contagious

Patriotism was contagious in the Levittown School District as students dressed in red, white and blue celebrated Patriot Day, an annual observance on September 11th to remember the attacks on the World Trade Center in New York City. In commemoration of this historical event, the district designated September 11th as a “day of service,” in which many of the students filled out pledges to help others. Social studies lessons in secondary-level grades also recapped the tragic

event, while Jonas E. Salk Middle School social studies teacher Samantha McKevitt’s class not only discussed how to be of service to others, but also analyzed the message in Alan Jackson’s popular song “Where Were You When the World Stopped Turning?” At Lee Road Elementary School, fourth and fifthgrade students colored heart-shaped flags containing pledges to serve others and which now decorate the hallway. Some of the pledges included cleaning up trash in the

park, recycling and helping an elderly neighbor take out the garbage. In Pamela Smith’s fourthgrade class, the students also read Maira Kalman’s “Fireboat,” a true story about first- responders. They also discussed how first-responders help the community. At East Broadway Elementary School, kindergarten students learned about what is means to be patriotic and made American heart-shaped flag hats to accessorize their patrioticcolored clothing.

Day of Unity In observance of Patriot Day, Wantagh School District students observed Patriot Day, an annual observance to remember those affected by the terrorist attacks on September 11th, 2001. At Wantagh High School, the General Organization hosted an “I will” pledge drive in which students and faculty were invited to make a pledge to perform a good deed to benefit the community. Those who participated were issued a sticker flag and all pledges were posted in the main lobby showcase and hallways. Wantagh Middle

School sixth-grade teacher Valentina Gatti’s students studied and made important connections between George W. Bush’s televised speech after the September 11th attacks and President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s “Day of Infamy” speech. They explored text-based evidence of the leaders’ themes and desired intent and discussed how television has changed the government’s ability to communicate with citizens. The students also discussed the importance of focusing one’s writing to a desired audience and techniques to achieved a desired reaction.

Third-grade students at Forest Lake Elementary School read Mordecai Gerstein’s “The Man Who Walked Between the Towers and discussed the importance of the twin towers. They also wrote letters of appreciation to local emergency service workers to be delivered to the Wantagh Fire Department. The fourthand fifth-grade students also studied the concept of unity and it’s connection to the symbolism of the American flag. The lesson culminated with the decoration of American flag cakes.

Cancer Awareness Month

In observance of National Children’s Cancer Awareness Month during the month of September, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray presented a Town Proclamation to Philip and Rene Renna and their son R.J. The Renna’s, who lost

their 16 year old daughter, Christina Rose, to a rare form of cancer in 2007, founded the Christina Renna Foundation, Inc. in her memory. The nonprofit foundation helps support childhood cancer research and further awareness and education through the support of

cancer groups. To help increase Children’s Cancer Awareness, the foundation has launched a “Gold Ribbon” campaign during the month of September, and has placed hundreds of gold ribbons at municipal buildings throughout Long Island.

Lady Rebels Honored

New York State Senator Michael Venditto congratulated the North Bellmore-North Merrick Lady Rebels 11 and 12 Year Old Softball Team for capturing the 2015 New York State Championship! The Lady Rebels also finished 4th Place in

the Eastern Region Championship, which is the largest Region in the United States with over 650 Little League Teams competing in the Williamsport Tournament. Congratulations to: Hannah Aievoli, Sydney Lamagra, Julia Tarantino,

Alongside the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Hempstead Town hosted its annual sunrise memorial program, Long Island’s only interactive ceremony. Attendees at the event played an active and integral role in a moving tribute to the heroes who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11th. The ceremony, which attracted hundreds of residents from across the region focused on the legacy of 9/11 victims and the theme of “renewal.” A powerful focal point of the ceremony was an 18foot tall, chromium replica of the World Trade Center, rising majestically from the shoreline. The towers were set against a new 35-foot long “inspiration mural,” depicting Manhattan’s skyline. A tribute fountain rested at the base of the compelling memorial display. As part of the program, participants were asked to cast white carnations upon the fountain. Attendees

were also given permanent markers and invited to write the names of loved ones who perished in the attacks or of illnesses related to their work at Ground Zero upon the inspiration mural. The final interactive component had guests placing miniature American flags, which included message tags, at a sand platform in front of the towers. “We are compelled to return to this beach on an annual pilgrimage of personal reflection and renewal in communion with the victims who perished on the saddest day in this nation’s history,” stated Murray. “Hundreds of neighbors return to this location each year, the same place where they gathered immediately after the 9/11 attacks, looking toward the site of the once majestic towers in horror and disbelief.” Additional elements of the ceremony included performances by the Kellenberg Gregorian

Consortium, dove release, memorial fire bell ringing, fire truck flag arch, bagpipe procession as well as speeches by the Town Supervisor and religious leaders. A keynote speech was offered by two local residents, Morgan Stanley employees who were fire marshals on the 73rd floor of the south tower. When the second plane hit they stayed to help others off their floor and miraculously made it out of the building before it collapsed. The ceremony was attended by many families who had loved ones perish on September 11th or of 9/11 related illnesses. The families have found solace in the seaside ceremony year after year. “The legacy of love and hope of the victims of the terrorist attacks serves as a vibrant tribute to their memory and holds the promise of renewal for future generations,” said Supervisor Murray.

Beary Good Time After introducing their bears to one another, the students tucked up with their furry friends to listen to a reading of Don Freeman’s “Corduroy.” The bears turned out to be excellent actors as the students read poetry and then performed the poems with their bear-thespians. In addition, the students were instructed to describe

their bears in “bear journals.” The bears made math lessons fun, too. After sorting and counting the bears according to different attributes, the students compared the stuffed animals’ sizes and colors and created a floor graph.

Fr. Christopher Hofer and all of the parishioners of The Church of St. Jude, are thrilled to welcome Mother Maxine Barnett into our family. Mother Maxine was ordained to the sacred order of the priesthood on Saturday, September 12th, at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Garden City. Born in Jamaica, Maxine attended a teachers’ college in Kingston, Jamaica before migrating to America in 1978. She completed a Master’s degree in Educational Psychology at New York University, and worked at an independent school in

Brooklyn as a classroom teacher and administrator for 31 years. Maxine considered teaching a true vocation and enjoyed working with young children and collaborating with teachers. During that time, Maxine found a church home at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Queens and over the years, participated in the Young Adult ministry and served as vestry member, Sunday school superintendent and teacher, Eucharistic minister, lay reader and lay preacher. It is in this community that she consciously began to discern the call to ordained ministry, and was supported by the rector and members of St. David’s through this life-changing process. Maxine’s journey led her to study at Virginia Theological Seminary. After completing her studies in May 2015, Maxine was call to serve as curate at St. Jude’s.

“Mother Maxine is a wonderful addition to our faith community. With her infectious spirit and background in education, she brings a wonderful energy to our parish,” said, Fr. Hofer, “Her passion and commitment will undoubtedly help our vibrant parish grow in God’s love.” As a newcomer to Wantagh, please help us to welcome Mother Maxine to our community. Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray has announced that the town is seeking volunteers for its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program. Now entering its 41st year, the VITA Program is sponsored by the Town of Hempstead’s Department of Senior Enrichment under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service. “We are currently seeking individuals who would like to dedicate some of their spare time to become a VITA volunteer,” said Supervisor Kate Murray. “Over the past 40 years, VITA volunteers trained by the Town of Hempstead have provided thousands of seniors and residents with limited incomes with invaluable aid.” Through the VITA BEARY GOOD TIME - Wantagh first-graders in Lori Gottlieb’s class at Forest Lake program, volunteers Elementary School celebrated a day of learning with their bears on Teddy Bear Day. are trained and then Photo provided by: Wantagh School District

Volunteers are not required to hold any advanced degrees or certifications. Volunteers must have a willingness to work with people, have a keen sense of mathematics, and be available for at least three daytime hours per week during the 10week program (February, March and part of April 2016). IRS-trained instructors will train volunteers at the Department of Senior Enrichment, located at 200 North Franklin Street in Hempstead during a multi-day training program beginning on December 10th, 2015. Saturday

training sessions will be conducted on January 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th, 2016 at the Oceanside Public Library located at 30 Davison Avenue in Oceanside. “In order to ensure that this free program enjoys continued success, I encourage anyone who is able to dedicate at least three hours per week during the upcoming tax season to consider joining this outstanding group of volunteers,” concluded Murray. rehearsals in which they learned and practiced choreography, marching technique, and music to the production titled “Disco Never Dies.” This show will be performed for the first time during the school’s homecoming game on September 26th. The show features music from the 1970’s disco era and includes songs from artists K.C. and the Sunshine Band and Kool and the Gang.

On the last day of the program, students participated in the 21st annual MacArthur High School Marching Band Drill Down competition by competing against one another in challenges that demonstrated marching technique skills. The winners of this year’s competition were junior flute player Kaitlin Deegan, and senior baritone horn player Anthony DeMartino.

New Mural Parkway Elementary School’s 2014-2015 fifthgrade art club created an earth friendly mural of the galaxy through the use of bottle caps. Under the direction of art teacher Ms. Franceska Baer, 40 fifth-grade art

club students spent three months constructing the planets and stars of our galaxy. The fifth-grade art club collected numerous bottle caps with the help of the entire school. Students and staff were asked to bring in bottle caps and

lids of containers to help supply the mural. “The inspiration for the mural came from a photo I found,” said Ms. Baer. “I wanted to do something different and environmentally friendly.”

East Meadow High School senior Elton Ha has been selected to perform in the United States Army All-American Marching Band in San Antonio, Texas and All-National Honor Ensemble in Nashville, Tennessee. W. T. Clarke High School senior Juliet Rafanelli has been selected to perform in the American Choral Directors Association Eastern Division Conference in Boston, Massachusetts. The United States Army All-American Marching Band features 125 top marching band members across the United States to perform at the United States Army All-American

Bowl, a premier national high school football game. Elton will march with other top musicians in the half-time performance of the All-American Bowl at the Alamodome on Jan. 9, 2016 and spend a week receiving instruction from top collegiate instructors across the country and educational sessions from members of the United States Army Field Band. Elton will also perform in the All-National Honor Ensemble in Nashville, Tennessee from October 25th-28th. Hundreds of student-musicians will demonstrate their musical talents and perform a gala concert celebrating music and art education. The All-National Ensembles consist of a concert band, orchestra, mixed chorus

and jazz ensemble. Elton will be performing in the symphony orchestra. Juliet will perform in the American Choral Directors Association Eastern Division Conference in Boston Massachusetts from February 10th13th. The theme of this year’s conference is “pushing boundaries.” The conference will inspire musicians through collaborative performances, interest sessions and strengthen their passion for music. “We are extremely proud of both Elton and Juliet’s hard work. We are thrilled to be a part of their musical journeys,” District Director of Music and Art Kati Behr said.
