atriotism soared through the East Meadow School District on September 11th as students, dressed in red, white and blue, commemorated the 15th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center. Across the district, students learned about the tragedy of the events on 9/11 and designated Patriot Day as a “day of service,” during which they pledged to help others. Meadowbrook Elementary School’s fifth-graders planted American flags in the garden.

The goal for the scholarship fund is to establish it as an endowment in perpetuity. The family and friends of Denis Dillon are now seeking contributions. Named as Beneficiary It was recently announced that the Gold Coast Arts Center will be one of the beneficiaries for this year’s Neiman Marcus “Love to Give” collection, available online beginning October 19th and in stores on November 3rd. The collection will feature “dozens of perfectly priced items for gift giving” from which each store will give ten percent of the proceeds to benefit youth arts education in Neiman Marcus communities across the country. The GCAC will be recipients from the Roosevelt Field location at 630 Old Country Road, Garden City, NY 11530. An additional $50,000 from online sales will also go to The Heart of Neiman Marcus Foundation to support national youth arts programs as well. The Gold Coast Arts Center is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to promoting and supporting the arts through education, exhibition, performance and outreach. For over 20 years they have brought the arts and arts in education experiences to tens of thousands of people throughout our region through their (1) School for the Arts, which offers year-round classes in all visual and performing arts to students of all ages and abilities, (2) Free public art gallery, (3) Concert and lecture series, (4) Outreach programs, which each year bring artist residencies, after-school programs, school assemblies, teacher

Character Counts Character education and literacy development are coming together at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District. Students are learning to become better citizens while improving their reading, writing, listening, comprehension and conversational skills. Retooled for the 20162017 school year, the character education program uses books to convey the message of the monthly positive behavioral traits. Principal Denise Fisher said that using literature for a character education program is more effective
than just talking about a trait, because the students become engaged as they relate to a book’s characters. These books and others will become part of a lending library in her office. During the first spirit assembly of the school year, Fisher launched the program and introduced the September trait acceptance. Through “turn and talk” discussions, children share their thoughts with one another and their teachers about the monthly reading selection. Questions such as “What does it mean to be an accepting person?” have students relate the books
to their own actions. Other traits that will be featured this year include responsibility, citizenship, generosity, respect, optimism, cooperation, caring, perseverance and overall character. Teachers can nominate students who embody each month’s characteristic for schoolwide recognition. “All the traits are part of who we are as a Newbridge Road community, and these are traits that stay with us as people in our hearts,” Ms. Fisher said. “Acceptance is a great way to start the year because we’re all different.”

Passion for Dance The Long Island Scholar-Artist committee has selected Levittown’s MacArthur High School student Jared Stern as one of 20 recipients of an Award of Merit from the Long Island Scholar Artist program. A senior, Jared is a dancer with the Long Island High School for the Arts, as well as the East Coast Artists Dance
Center and Arrhythmia Dance Company. His dance team recently garnered a first-place win in the national-level Rainbow Dance Competition in Florida with its number titled “A Solid State.” Jared has also participated in the Star Dance Alliance World Dance Championship, where his team took home a top ten rating. In addition to dance,
Jared is a member of the National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society for Spanish. His lifetime goal is to dance with a Broadway ensemble or a modern dance company. The Levittown School District congratulates Jared on this outstanding achievement.

Patriotism soared through the East Meadow School District on September 11th as students, dressed in red, white and blue, commemorating the 15th anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center. Across the district, students learned about the tragedy of the events on 9/11 and designated Patriot Day as a “day of service,” during which they pledged to help others. M e a d o w b r o o k Elementary School’s fifthgraders planted American flags in the school’s garden and held a moment of silence to honor the fallen victims, police officers, firefighters and first responders. In addition, fourth-graders of Denise
Henning’s class read Carmen Agra Deedy’s book “14 Cows for America,” a story about a small African village that sent 14 cows to comfort the United States ensue of the tragedy. The class was asked to write about a special intangible gift they would have given to America during this time. Gifts included peace, love and companionship. In social studies classes at East Meadow High School, teachers discussed the historic unfolding of events with their students, encouraging them to remember the lives that were lost. The classes contributed to a 9/11-tribute banner constructed by the school’s Model Congress and Social Studies Honor Society,
which featured the names of every victim and a replica of the American flag. In a unifying gesture, each student submitted a red, white or blue index card pledging a personal act of duty or kindness that would make the community a safer place. The high school classes also paid a visit to a 9/11 memorial, outside the mathematics corridor, that was created six years ago through a partnership between Model Congress, the social studies department and the Social Studies Honor Society. The memorial includes two juniper trees symbolizing the Twin Towers and a piece of debris from the attacks, encircled by American flags.

Student Representatives The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that seniors Steven Reilly from Division Avenue High School and Arianna Wynn from MacArthur High School will serve as the advisors and liaisons to the superintendent of schools during the 2016-2017 school year. Although the seniors sit with the board of education during public meetings, they do not have the power to vote. Instead, these representatives
relay information about happenings and issues in each of the high schools to the trustees and superintendent, as well as board information to their respective student councils. Steven is student council president and a member of the National Honor Society and Math Honor Society. He also participates in annual competitions with the Science Olympiad and Mathletes teams. In addition to his academics, Steven is a mid-fielder
with the varsity lacrosse team and was formerly designated as an AllConference, All-County and Academic All-County player. Arianna is a peer leader and a member of the National Honor Society, as well as the math, art and world language honor societies. She works in the school store and is a science research student under the direction of Dr. David Friedman.

Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s John F. Kennedy High School seniors Maximilian Bazil and Claire Kelly spent their summer completing graduate-level scientific research and experiments and their efforts were recognized by the 2016 Child Mind Institute as Rising Scientists. Kelly relocated to Illinois during the summer months to work on her psychopharmacology project, The Impulsivity as a Predictor for Enhanced Attentional Bias Towards Novel Drug-Paired Cues at the University of Chicago. A three-year Advanced Science Research student, Kelly is also working on a second project involving Parkinson’s treatments. She said the ASR program has taught her to “think like a scientist.” “I’ve learned how to work better with peers as well as professionals,” Kelly said.
“These projects have also pushed me to work harder than I ever had before.” Kelly is hoping to publish new data soon and has taken these finding to numerous scientific competitions already. She hopes to pursue an education in neuroscience in English, which is a narrative style of practice. Bazil said his project, The Intra-Arterial Injection and Differentiation of Autologous, Genetically Modified Human Endothelial Progenitor Cells as a Targeted Drug Delivery Therapy for Stroke in a Human Umbilical Artery Model, has a “lot of ideas that are preliminarily supported” by his research. “This could be a fastacting therapy in the future [for stroke victims],” he added. “I’m already forward thinking to human trials.” Bazil completed his research at Mount Sinai Hospital in the department of neurosurgery. An
emergency medical captain of the junior squad of the Bellmore-Merrick EMS, Bazil said he’s always been interested in neurology, however, has become intrigued by the vascular aspect as well. He has had an abstract published in the Annals of Neurology and would like to pursue a focus in neuroscience, specializing in a pediatric role. His other research project, completed in May, focused on the Development of a Cerebral Angiography Calibration Model Using Relative Arterial Diameters. The pair was selected from more than 30 applicants. As a Child Mind Institute Rising Scientist, they will present their research on October 25th at a ceremony. They will also receive a $1,000 scholarship for college expenses.

The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that MacArthur High School senior Jailyn Lopez was selected as a 2016 National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholar. The NHRP was established in 1983 through the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and honors about 5,000 or 2.5 percent of the highestscoring students from over 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT/
NMSQT. Qualifications for recognition were based on critical reading, mathematics and writing scores on the PSAT/ NMSQT and a minimum GPA of 3.0. Although there is no financial reward, the NHRP sends a list of all recognized students to subscribing colleges and universities that are particularly interested in academically outstanding seniors of Hispanic/Latino origin.
Jailyn is an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and is a member of the Math and Science Olympiad teams, as well as the art club. She also plays the piccolo in the school’s marching band and the clarinet in the symphonic band. Jailyn plans to pursue a career in math or science and says she looks forward to attending an East Coast college next fall.

The Wantagh School District is pleased to announce that the New York State School Music Association selected high school student-musicians Kevin Ganzekaufer and Lindsay Whiteman to participate in the AllState Mixed Chorus and Vocal Jazz Ensemble, respectively, during the NYSSMA Winter Conference to be held at the Eastman Theatre in
Rochester, New York, from December 1st-4th. Thousands of students auditioned for this honor during solo and ensemble festivals throughout the state. In addition, Dan Hirsch, was selected to participate in the Jazz Ensemble during the National Association for Music Education’s All-National Honor Ensembles held in Grapevine, Texas, held
from November 10-13. Dan plays the trumpet in the high school’s marching band, concert band and wind ensemble. He was also selected as a NYSSMA All-State musician during the 2015-2016 school year. In the late-night hours of the Independence Day holiday last year, the Baldwin Fire Department was dispatched to an initial report of smoke coming from an apartment on Old Mill Road in Baldwin, where police officers on the fire scene reported that people were trapped in a secondfloor apartment. ExCaptain Kopf performed a search and rescue and located a victim in a rear bedroom, past the fire room (the living room), then carried from the building a 56 yearold man suffering from severe smoke inhalation. Baldwin Fire Department’s then-Chief, Karen Bendel, who was the first to arrive on the scene of the “uncontrolled fire” and transmitted the “Signal 10” (working fire) nominated Kopf for FASNY’s Firefighter of the Year Award. Bendel noted, “…Ex-Captain Frederick Kopf arrived in his personal vehicle… and conducted a search. Kopf located a 56-year-old male in the fire apartment
and successfully removed him with assistance to awaiting EMS personnel outside…For his actions at this scene, we are pleased to nominate Frederick Kopf for the FASNY Firefighter of the Year Award.” For his actions on this fire call, Kopf will also receive the Baldwin Fire Department’s Distinguished Service Award at the department’s headquarters later this year. Captain Frederick Dirmeir, Ladder Company 2 recommended Kopf with this summary, “Firefighter Fred Kopf negotiated the fire apartment in zero visibility, blistering heat and without the benefit of a partner to carry out this successful rescue. Due to the imminent life threat to the victim he knowingly passed the fire room without the protection of a hand line, in a rapidly deteriorating environment. During the course of this rescue Fred Kopf exhibited remarkable courage, determination and skill to ensure the successful solution which directly resulted in the saving of a human life. Fred Kopf acted in the highest traditions of the Fire Service and without regard to his own personal safety. For his actions above and beyond the call of duty we submit
that he be recognized and awarded the highest honor.” Ex-Captain Fred Kopf, a life-long Baldwin resident is a 29 yearveteran of the Baldwin Fire Department, with all 29 years assigned to Hook and Ladder Company 2. He is also an 18-year career firefighter with the FDNY, holding the rank of Lieutenant for the past 11 years with a Queens engine company. Kopf’s son, along with about a dozen volunteer firefighters from Baldwin Fire Department’s Ladder 2 Company were on hand to congratulate Fred at the FASNY Firefighter of the Year Award presentation ceremony in Albany at The Desmond Hotel in August. Several members of the Baldwin Fire Department served as an Honor Color Guard. “It gives me great pleasure to present FASNY’s 2016 Firefighter of the Year to Frederick Kopf for demonstrating outstanding heroism and risking his own life to save another. It is gratifying to recognize and celebrate that sacrifice in the presence of our FASNY family and friends,” said FASNY President Robert McConville upon presentation of the FASNY Firefighter of the Year Award to Fred Kopf.

The workshop, geared toward elementary school administrators, will explain the steps needed to
create a successful Brown Bag Seminar Series, a form of enrichment for all students. Brown Bag Seminars can take place during recess or other scheduled times and are organized around student interests and talents. Dr. Bonagura explained that the Brown Bag Seminars “offer opportunities to involve members of the community and engages students in topics that can foster future hobbies and

Looking for Perfection It’s funny how many different forms the term “friendship” can take on these days. Gone is the time when having a new “best friend” every year of elementary school was the norm, replaced instead by a handful of fairly close friends and an infinite number of what can only be classified as acquaintances; those you may travel in similar circles with but, once the circle is broken, severed is the superficial connection forged as well. Even among those close friends, there are breakdowns. There are those who you may only see sporadically to grab dinner or catch a movie with, yet when you do get together, it’s like no time has elapsed at all. Then there are the friends you embark on daylong
adventures with, aimlessly wandering the streets of New York City, the beaches of Long Island and everything in between. These are the days of memories made, of endless photographs snapped… the days you will fondly recall years from now, and smile. I recently came across a quote: “Photographs are proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.” Not only does it speak to my personal love of photography as a whole, but to that notion of reflecting upon moments and savoring them. Sure, it is equally important to be present in the moment and experience it fully; but pictures have the ability to preserve an instant in a way that memory alone cannot always fulfill. Hence, my albums full of fun and silliness, of candid
moments and scenic shores. Of friends, both the lifelong variety and those who may only make a guest appearance along the way. And of course, Buddy, my very special finned friend, who holds a unique place in my heart the way that only a pet can. He may be contained in a bowl, but his personality shines through, and the connection is just as real as those established with friends of the “Human” variety. Month after month, I celebrate his “birthday,” the anniversary of his time in my home, along with the standard holidays that we have been fortunate to share with him. Now that school is officially open, the Levittown School District has provided opportunities for its youngest students to become more informed about bus safety and emergency procedures. During the month of September, elementary school students throughout the district have participated in bus drills, stressing the importance of rules, seating arrangements and
the steps to take during an emergency. Gardiners Avenue Elementary School students participated in safety drills on September 13th, boarding the bright yellow buses and learning to exit from the back hatch during an emergency. Levittown bus driver Vic Ramsundar explained that New York State law requires that students participate in bus drills each year. “We teach the students about where the
emergency exits are, the rules and what to do if a bus driver has an emergency,” Ramsundar said. “This is important for all students, even those who don’t ride the bus to school, because they will be riding a bus on field trips.” Gardiners Avenue students then attended an assembly about bus safety with Superintendent of Transportation Dajuana Reeves.
