Golf Invitational The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) is pleased to announce its upcoming 37th annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational. This landmark charity tournament will take place on Tuesday, October 3rd. Participants will have their choice of teeing off at Meadow Brook Club in Jericho, or Piping Rock Club in Locust Valley. As the drug epidemic is front page news almost every day, the important work of LICADD is more vital than ever. Named for LICADD Founder, R. Brinkley Smithers, the
tournament’s proceeds ensure that the services LICADD provides - from screening, intervention and referral services, to recovery support, prevention education, an Employee Assistance Program and mentoringall remain accessible to the individuals and families who are most affected by drug and alcohol abuse on Long Island. And with that, summer’s final swan song is upon us, as the autumnal air seems to have taken up residence across this long island that we call home. Some will say the summer months flew by in the blink of an eye; others will say they dragged on unbearably. How drastic are the differences in perception from one person to another. It’s funny how things seem to move in fast forward once the school year gets underway. Halloween decorations have been out in full force for weeks, with Christmas not far behind. That spring cleaning that we’ve been putting off until fall is now begging for our attention. As the leaves begin to turn, can outdoor cleanups be far behind as well? In the entertainment world, gone are the evenings of summer concerts under the stars, replaced instead by nights spent in front of
the television as many of our favorite shows return from hiatus. That baseball season which once seemed endless on opening day in April is now nearing its final stretch, as playoff pictures begin to take shape. All this, while football season takes over, and each Sunday’s activities become dictated by the game schedule of your favorite team. Soon enough, all roads heading eastward will be jammed with traffic as the masses scramble to take advantage of each beautiful autumn weekend. Pumpkin picking, apple picking, hayrides, corn mazes… so much to accomplish in so little time. And yet, there is always precisely the same amount of time. It’s all in how we choose to use it. A good family friend of mine recently commented that we all tend to live as though we have this list of obligations

to complete, rather than taking a step back and simply experiencing each moment as it happens. There is very little we actually have to do; in fact, almost nothing is required within a particular time frame. And so, we can afford to relax a bit, to take our time transitioning, whether it is from one season to the next or something larger and more significant to our personal lives. So, while the calendar may indicate autumn just a few days from now, that doesn’t mean we need to give up enjoying the warmth of the sun, or throw away our remaining summer plants in favor of mums and pumpkins. All in good time. Autumn is a season of transition in itself, a cross-section of weather and activities, even fashion. A season of plenty. Plenty to appreciate. Plenty to embrace. Plenty to enjoy.

Autism Speaks Walk The Long Island Chapter of Autism Speaks, the world’s leading autism science and advocacy organization, will hold its 2017 Long Island Autism Speaks Walk event on Sunday, October 1st, at Jones Beach - Field 5. Proceeds from Long Island 18th annual walk will support Autism Speaks’ mission to promote solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the life span, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families. Autism Speaks Walk is the world’s largest fundraising event to enhance the lives of people with autism today and accelerate a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.

Making Strides Long Island’s leading breast cancer walk, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, will be held on two dates and at two locations, starting on Sunday, October 15th, at Jones Beach State Park, 1 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh, and on Sunday, October 22nd, at Suffolk County Community College Eastern Campus, 121 Speonk Riverhead Rd, Riverhead. “With an estimated 70,000 participants at Jones Beach and several thousand more on the East End, Long Island hosts the largest attended
event in the country,” said Patti Lestrange Mack, American Cancer Society Communications Director. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a noncompetitive, inspirational event that raises awareness and funds to end breast cancer and provide hope to ensure no one faces breast cancer alone. The 3rd annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk at Jones Beach to raise funds and awareness on the opioid crisis on Long Island will be held Saturday, October 7th, beginning at 10 a.m. The event is held each year to honor the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opiate overdoes at age 25. Proceeds from the walk support Outreach, the Queens and Long Island-based organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. The parents and children of John Brower,
Jr. formed the foundation to heighten awareness about substance abuse and to help raise funds to end the drug epidemic that has had an adverse effect on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers were impressed by the organization’s dedication to help those struggling with addiction. They decided to target all the group’s fundraising for the agency. To date, the Brower family has donated more than $39,000 to Outreach. “The Brower family is one of too many Long Island families who have
experienced the heartbreak of opiate addiction,” said Kathleen Riddle, president of Outreach. “We join the Browers in their mission to do all we can to raise awareness for teens and young adults so additional families do not have to lose a loved one to substance abuse. The Brower family has been tremendously generous and devoted to the cause. We are enormously thankful for their support.” “It’s been more than four years since we lost our son,” said John Brower, Sr., “but his memory is with us every day as is our determination to continue
fighting addiction. Kickline Clinic The Mepham varsity kickline team will host their fourth kickline clinic for children in kindergarten through eighth grade on Saturday, Octember 21st, from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. in the gym at Brookside School, located at 1260 Meadowbrook Road in Merrick. Various forms of dance will be taught and participants will perform

Despite a light rain, students throughout the East Meadow School District donned bright smiles and backpacks full of school supplies as they began the 2017-2018 school year on September 6th. Superintendent of
Schools, Dr. Kenneth A. Card Jr., administrators and faculty were on hand to greet students as they disembarked from their buses and walked to class. At all nine schools, hallways were alive and bustling as students reunited with friends and
were warmly greeted by their teachers for another exciting new school year. The district wishes all families, students and staff a successful school year and looks forward to a wonderful year ahead!

Spreading Kindness The lockers of Wisdom Lane Middle School received a pop of color on September 6th as seventh-graders Annina Saccomanno and Nabiha Khan stuck more than 250 inspirational quotes and messages to the lockers of their peers. The students thought of the Pay it Forward idea over the summer and researched different quotes and messages that they could use. They then typed them up and placed them on colorful construction paper. The girls arrived early on the first day of school to
post the messages and words of encouragement throughout the hallways. “We thought it would be a really nice thing to do because a lot of people are really nervous about starting school,” said Saccomanno. “We wanted to do something to give inspiration and motivation to start the year on a positive note,” said Khan. The act of kindness did not go unnoticed as students and faculty members throughout the building were pleasantly surprised at the gesture. Principal John Avena
reported that many students and faculty members approached him asking who was responsible for the good deed. “I have never seen so many people, whether it be staff or students, come to me asking who did that,” said Avena. “The act of kindness was incredible. You could see as the students were reading the messages that it put a smile on their faces.” Avena hopes to expand on the idea and make it a tradition for the start of each school year with one of the school’s clubs taking on the project.

Life’s rewards come in many forms But for me, it’s far from the norm As a nurse, my job allows me to help Make a difference in someone’s life Whether it’s a parent, child, friend, mother or father, husband or wife Serious situations, some not fun No time to waste, but get the job done As you look into a patient’s eyes, you know they’re scared Comfort them, reassure them you’re there Just knowing this, they’re glad Time passes quickly, and does not stand still We work hard to get the patient better And no longer ill The day nears an end, the patients did well They’re on the mend A feeling of greatness is felt All in a day’s work, oh what the heck It’s just another paycheck! Incoming Levittown ninth-graders at General Douglas MacArthur High School and Division Avenue High School prepared for their new school year with orientation assemblies on August 31st, to provide students with key information as they transition from a middle
school student to high school freshman. At both buildings, the students were reunited with their peers and were warmly welcomed by their building principal. They received information on how to be successful in high school and were placed in a group with a
peer leader. Peer leaders consisted of seniors who served as mentors for the students during their orientation day. They showed them around the building, helped them with their locks and answered any questions that students had about classes or teachers.

Patriotism and Service Students and staff in the North Bellmore School District marked the 16th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks by donning patriotic attire. They wore combinations of red, white and blue to school, and many were clad in shirts featuring the American flag. Each school
held a moment of silence following the Pledge of Allegiance. The anniversary of the attacks also serves as the National Day of Service and Remembrance. In the spirit of this day and the district’s mission of contributing to the global community, staff members made donations to the
Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund through the Greater Houston Community Fund. Staff Convenes The East Meadow School District held its annual Superintendent’s Conference Day on September 1st and 5th, during which administrators, teachers and staff participated in workshops led by academic professionals and district faculty to enhance their instructional practices for another successful school year. In his welcoming remarks, Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Kenneth A. Card Jr., expressed his
enthusiasm for the school year and encouraged the attendees to continue giving their best to their students. “The opening of school is always the greatest time, as it is filled with promise, possibility and new opportunities to learn, grow and inspire,” Dr. Card said. “This year, our focus will be to provide, as you have done so well in the past, quality instruction, effective communication with parents, a safe environment for both
staff and students, and a continued focus on literacy and technology integration. Interactive Display In remembrance of 9/11, all seventh-grade students at Merrick Avenue Middle School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District interacted in a humanities lesson delivered by English and social studies teachers. During their humanities block, students participated in a gallery walk and discussion about ordinary, heroic citizens’ efforts to aid those affected by the tragedy, and later, the artwork that was created to memorialize the day. The students will analyze images of art and memorials using a technique from the National Constitution Center’s exhibit, “9/11: A Nation Remembers.” The images displayed are from Duke University’s “Flesh & Metal, Bodies & Buildings:
Works from Jonathan Hyman’s Archive of 9/11 Vernacular Memorials.” Principal Dr. Taryn Johnson explained, “students learned about America’s social and cultural responses to the events of this day by analyzing the public memorials created across the American landscape in the days, months and years after the attacks. These displays continue to serve as a symbol of enduring hope.” “One of the central themes of the lesson is reflective of the values we embody as members of the Bellmore-Merrick community and as Americans - in times of tragedy and difficulty, we seek to help each and to connect with kindness and caring,” said Kate
Caporusso, social studies chairperson. English chairperson Adeline Atkins added, “this lesson demonstrates how we collectively respond to tragedy - on 9/11 and the days and months afterward, we banded together to help one another. These images and stories about those who came to the aid of others and the artwork that was later created is a beautiful example of who we are and how we express our shared humanity.” Eighth-grade students also explored the theme of connecting with kindness and caring as they looked at ordinary heroes. “Students examined the story of the boat lifters and the town of Gander as case studies of these groups in their social studies classes,” added Caporusso.

Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) boasts some of the most talented and experienced arts educators in the region. In addition to its core faculty of industry experts, LIHSA has a team of 20 Visiting
Lecturers, consisting of working professionals in the school’s four basic disciplines - dance, music, theater and film. Among them is Elliot Weiss cticut, who teaches music. Elliot Weiss is a musical celebrity in his own right,
having served as musical director for such legends of stage and screen as Ray Bolger and Leslie Uggams, among others. As a composer, he contributed to the Eugene O’Neill Award-winning The Witch of Wall Street. He was producer of the musical revue Bittersuite: Songs of More Experience and worked with renowned writer Eric Blau on Dori: The Life and Times of Theodore Herzl. Mr. Weiss’s television credits include Queer Eye for the Straight Guy and Gossip Girls, and his album credits include Fantasy with the internationally renowned Audubon String Quartet and Giving Voice with famous Broadway baritone David Edwards. Mr. Weiss is an esteemed graduate of The Juilliard School.

Lending a Helping Hand With so much loss and devastation left in Hurricane Harvey’s wake leaving Texas and its residents a long road of rebuilding and recovery, Homes By Mara Realty Founder, Owner and President Mara Navaretta of Woodbury and her team of agents have launched their own public Hurricane Harvey Non-Perishable Food & Paper Goods Collection Drive. Now through Friday, October 13th, people are encouraged to drop off nonperishable foods and paper goods, such as toilet paper, paper towels and paper plates, at the designated collection drive box kept by the inside front door of the agency, located at its new headquarters at 30 Berry Hill Road in Syosset, NY. Collection donation drop off times run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. Navaretta and her agents
kicked off their collection drive by first making contributions themselves and are now encouraging the Long Island community to join them in donating non-perishable food items and paper goods to help people in Texas who are facing overwhelming loss and destruction. “I believe we all have a responsibility to be mindful of what is happening around our country and of those in need,” says Navaretta. “What happened in Texas hit home for so many of us as it could have happened to any of us here on Long Island. Whether we have loved ones living in Texas or not, we as human beings need to extend our help and support for others in need in whatever way possible. We invite Long Island residents to make donations to our collection drive so we can extend a helping hand for those in Texas who have lost so much as they begin their long road to recovery.
Every donation goes a long way in showing the people of Texas our thoughts and support.” All items collected are being donated to the nonprofit organization Island Harvest, which will ship Homes By Mara donated items to Texas, where they will be disseminated to those impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Beyond launching the Hurricane Harvey NonPerishable Food and Paper Goods Collection Drive, Navaretta and her agency have supported a number of other charitable initiatives since Homes By Mara’s establishment in 2010, which include sponsorship of a Hurricane Sandy Coat Drive, holiday coat and toy drives, The Ashley Wade Foundation’s Jake’s Jammies Drive and regularly donating to the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation.

A pair of studentmusicians at Wantagh High School have been selected to the All-State Winter Conference hosted by the New York State School Music Association. Lindsay Whiteman was chosen for the All-State Vocal Jazz Ensemble for the second consecutive year, and percussionist Matt Hanauer was named to the All-State Orchestra.
Thousands of students auditioned for this honor during solo and ensemble festivals throughout the state. The two seniors were selected based on their perfect scores and judges’ recommendations. The All-State conference will be held in December in Rochester. Additionally, senior Jarod Sullivan earned a spot in the U.S. Army
All-American Marching Band. The senior was selected based on his own audition video. He will also participate in the Macy’s Great American Marching Band during the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The trio were congratulated by their music teachers Jennifer Alessi, Dan Aviles and Mindy Dragovich.
Hearts & Hands As Wantagh School District staff and students began the 2017-2018 school year, their hearts and hands turned to a relief effort, sponsored by Nassau County Legislator Steve Rhoads, for the victims of Hurricane Harvey, which
pummeled southeast Texas in August. With assistance from the school’s PTA, student council and Principal Marie Pissichio, the students and staff generously collected blankets, diapers, baby formula, first aid supplies,

Star Staff Honored The Merrick School District continued its tradition of acknowledging employees for their countless contributions and milestones, while welcoming them back with encouragement for the year ahead during the annual Superintendent’s Conference held on August 31st. The entire district staff gathered at Levy Lakeside School for a morning of presentations and informative sessions. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dominick Palma welcomed all attendees, and Board of Education
Vice President Sigal Negrin and Assistant Superintendent Dr. Jill Karp addressed the group. “The most dedicated, hardworking professionals are what we proudly offer at our schools in Merrick,” said Negrin, who borrowed a quote from Maya Angelou when she added, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Dr. Palma and building principals honored five, 10-, 15-, 20- and 25-year employees, and presented special recognitions to
others who have held even longer careers in the district. Chatterton School head custodian Kent Erikson, Chatterton School teacher Nancy Russo and Levy Lakeside School teacher Janet Iseman were applauded for providing three decades of service, while Birch School teaching assistant Grayce Godfrey was awarded the Merrick Star as a 40-year employee of the district. Motivation to be More Active Today’s students arguably have more on their plates than any generation that came before them. But even with their hectic schedules, kids still have free time, which many are not always using in the healthiest ways possible. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, nearly one-third high school students play video games or computer games for three or more hours on an average school day. Sedentary lifestyles can increase kids’ risk for being overweight or obese, and many parents struggle in their efforts to encourage their school-aged children to get off the couch and embrace physical activities. The following are a handful of strategies concerned parents can
employ as they attempt to motivate youngsters to be more physically active. Choose the right activity. Physical activity and organized sports are not one and the same. Kids can still be physically active even if they are not athletic or if they are simply not interested in sports. Find an activity kids can embrace, such as hiking, swimming or even riding bikes, and they will be more likely to get off the couch. Limit screen time. Kids spend lots of time in front of computer and television screens, which can be detrimental to their overall health. The Westbury-based credit union NEFCU has donated $20,000 to help those directly affected by the destruction of Hurricane Harvey. The announcement was made today by Edward Paternostro, president and CEO of the credit union. Working with the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) and
its online disaster relief system, CUAid (www. cuaid.coop), NEFCU made the donation to help provide critical funds for immediate and long-term recovery needs to those in eastern Texas and the surrounding area. “Witnessing the destruction of Hurricane Harvey, and the unimaginable toll it has
exacted on those in its path, we as a credit union need to do whatever part we can play in helping others face this calamitous event,” said NEFCU’s Paternostro. “We, along with other credit unions, must come forward to help our colleagues and their members who have experienced the worst of this hurricane.”
