The photographic works of twenty of Wantagh High School’s finest photographers, under the direction of teacher Patricia Beary, were displayed alongside other professional artists in the Explorations in Pinhole Photography Exhibit, held at the Long Island Children’s Museum’s KaleidoZone Gallery from July 31st to Labor Day. Today, pinhole photography is an art form
used by artists to show time and motion. Before the camera, photographers used the camera obscura, a dark box with a pinhole to let in light. The light left an image on light-sensitive paper that became visible through the use of chemicals. Student artists who exhibited their pinhole works of art include Alyssa Albanese, Aimee Ambrosio, Zach Baruch, Grace Buscemi, Kayley Butcher,

Craig T. Nelson on Book Club and Incredibles 2 By Allison Kugel
From playing football fanatic, Hayden Fox, on the long running sitcom Coach; Zeek Braverman on Parenthood; and countless big screen roles, actor Craig T. Nelson’s career has been as versatile as it is prolific. It was his voice work in 2004’s Disney Pixar movie, The Incredibles, that introduced Nelson to a young audience. His voice is so recognizable as the voice of Mr. Incredible, that the world stops spinning for a beat whenever a starstruck child hears him speak. Nelson recently played Mary Steenburgen’s husband in the romantic comedy, Book Club and resumed his role as Mr. Incredible in Incredibles 2. Allison Kugel: What does an ensemble piece like Book Club allow you to do as an actor?
Allison Kugel: Book Club addresses that mid-to-later-life slump that people can slide into without even realizing it’s happening. How do you think men experience this phase of life differently from women? Craig T. Nelson: I think we experience it in much the same way. It depends
Allison Kugel: In Book Club, your wife, played by Mary Steenburgen, is upset because she feels your marriage has fallen into a slump. Do you think marriage should be able to go through its natural ebbs and flows? Craig T. Nelson: If you’re married to your best friend, as I am, you have to realize you’re going to have ups and downs. You’re physically going to change, emotionally you’re going to change. You have to adapt and be prepared for that stuff. That’s also part of the adventure. It seems like just yesterday I was talking to older actors about aging. I was a young working actor, and they were all telling me how difficult it was for them, and how they were approaching a period in their life where they felt they weren’t working as much. When it started happening to me, I think I was prepared for it to a certain degree. Allison Kugel: People may not know that you began your career as a standup comedian. Craig T. Nelson: Barry Levinson and
I did stand up [comedy] together for four years, and then another guy, Rudy DeLuca, joined us. We wrote and performed comedy, and then we worked with Tim Conway, John Byner and Alan King. That’s how I started in the business. Allison Kugel: How did that experience inform how you approach a role? Craig T. Nelson: I was never really interested in doing standup comedy. Barry Levinson and I were in the Oxford Theatre together, which was a theatre group in LA. We got to talking and Barry said, “Why don’t we do a standup act?” I had never done that and never even thought of it, but we put an act together. We went out and auditioned and started doing clubs. It was an intro into the business, and I met so many incredible people during that time. It does give me a different perspective on acting. Comedy helped me to enlarge and be better at what I did. Another important thing is that you just get better as you get older. I’m so much more comfortable in a scene now than I ever was. There are so many experiences and so many people to draw on. It’s a wonderful place to be. Allison Kugel: This is not your first time playing Mary Steenburgen’s husband. You also played husband and wife in the 2009 movie, The Proposal, alongside Ryan Reynolds and Sandra Bullock. How was it playing her husband again in Book Club? Craig T. Nelson: She’s so much fun to work with. She’s got this wonderful quirkiness to her that is so beautiful. It’s also very challenging, because you need to stay on top of your game with her, as with all the actresses in this film. I’ve worked with Diane [Keaton], I’ve worked with Jane [Fonda], I hadn’t met Candice [Bergen] until this film, so that was neat. I look forward to continuing to work with Mary. There is an understanding between me and Mary. You’re able to ask questions of each other or address problems in a scene together. There’s no wandering around, trying to get to the truth of something. Allison Kugel: Let’s switch gears and discuss Incredibles 2! In the first movie, The Incredibles, your character, Mr. Incredible is struggling with living life as a civilian. He’s dying to be a superhero again and to use his powers. Holly Hunter’s character, Elastigirl, wanted a normal family life. In Incredibles 2, it’s reversed. She’s
out being a superhero and you’re the stay-at-home dad. How does that go for Mr. Incredible? Craig T. Nelson: He doesn’t quite understand it and is feeling rejected, like, “Why don’t they want me out there?” He now has to take a back seat and for him that’s difficult. He makes the sacrifice for his wife. He’s got a resentment going on, but as you watch him at home you get to know these kids in a way that’s fun and interesting. And you get to see a guy have to adapt and get to know his children in a way that he hasn’t. That was neat for me to play. Allison Kugel: How do you get into character when you’re voicing Mr. Incredible? Craig T. Nelson: You prepare ahead of time in the session, especially vocally because there are a lot of different ranges you have to get to. There are scenes when you’re doing a lot of yelling and shouting. And it’s a long and involved process that’s complexly different from regular acting.
recognize the voice, it’s interesting. And then you have to convince this kid that you are! And you feel like an idiot trying to get a seven-year-old to believe you (laughs). They look at you with this wonder, yet at the same time disbelief. It gets confusing even for me. Allison Kugel: My nine-year-old is obsessed! He loved both The Incredibles and Incredibles 2, when it hit theatres this summer. Craig T. Nelson: The special FX are extraordinary. Since 2004 when the original movie was out, they’ve developed a whole new range of different processes that have gone into this second movie, including its color enrichment. For me, the exciting thing about the second movie is the character Jack Jack, the baby, really comes alive and that’s going to be so much fun for people to see. What’s so great about this movie is that it’s a family deal. You can take your family to this movie and have a great time. And same with Book Club. It’s two movies I’m proud to let my family watch.
Allison Kugel: I’m sure you’ve watched the first movie, The Incredibles, with your grandchildren. What do they think of you playing Mr. Incredible?

Yes, we are living longer, but there’s more pressure. I suppose it’s how that manifests in each of us, which has to do with our own personality. There’s a lot of pressure to be young. But there is also a lot of pressure being old, not to get any older. I think that is so screwed up.

Life’s Next Great Adventure “Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing at all.” – Helen Keller As I awaken on the morning of my forty-fourth birthday I am reminded of the first thought that crossed my mind four years ago, on the morning of my fortieth birthday. The thought was this: “Okay kid, the first half of the ride is over. What are you going to do with the second half? You’d better make it count.” I knew immediately that for all the accomplishments I’d achieved up until that point - becoming a professional writer, some travel, motherhood, great times with people I love, some spiritual growth - one thing that seemed to be missing in that moment was my next great adventure. I’d always been fascinated by horses and felt a sense of peace around them. I wanted to further explore that connection. I immediately went down to a local horse ranch in Melville, called Thomas School of Horsemanship, and signed up for horseback riding lessons.
I’ll never forget the way my heart pounded and the initial fear I felt as I mounted a horse for the very first time. It was a combination of, “My God, this animal is big and high off the ground!” and “I’m doing it! I’m learning to ride a horse.” At the close of my first lesson, I couldn’t remember the last time I’d felt so accomplished and proud to have tried something new and unfamiliar. Now, four years later, riding horses is as natural to me as breathing; it is my sanctuary. I enjoy riding English-saddle when I am in New York, and Western saddle when I am in Florida. When I am on a horse, the chaos of 21st century life melts away and things feel simple and beautiful. We all need that sacred retreat in our lives; something to look forward to that takes us out of our daily routine and allows us to be pure joyful consciousness. You elected to come into this physical plane to experience all that being human has to offer. Fill your life with as many moments as you can that make you feel alive. As I write this column, I
suddenly got an image in my mind from a scene in the iconic 1985 movie, Back to the Future (one of my all-time favorites). Doc Brown points to three illuminated dates on a screen, on the DeLorean Time Machine’s dashboard. He explains to Marty, “This one tells you where you are; this one tells you where you’re going; this one tells you where you’ve been.” If you visualize your mind as a camera, you can choose to pan out for a wider shot of your life. It’s a great exercise and offers the gift of perspective to examine where you are, where you’re going and where you’ve been. Try to see your life from that higher perspective. You will gain some clarity and inspiration that may direct you towards your life’s next great adventure. For many of us who are in our forties and beyond, the first half of the ride may indeed be behind us, but the second half, backed by earned wisdom, can be filled with unlimited new experiences if you allow it. Your life’s next great adventure is just one bold decision away.

The Equity First Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, which services clients all over Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. Some people they help through their workshops are those in women’s shelters, homeless shelters, veteran homes, at-risk communities, drug rehabilitation centers and senior centers. Additionally, as a way to honor women of Long Island that have excelled and created an impact in the areas of community, volunteer, philanthropy and business development, this nonprofit is holding their third annual Angel Awards! Students at all four high schools and two middle schools in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District bounded into buildings and down halls for the first day of the 2018-2019 school year on September 4th. John F. Kennedy, Sanford H. Calhoun and Wellington C. Mepham High Schools held ninthgrade orientations last week, which included building tours, small group discussions, and a freshman class barbecue. “I am especially proud that we had nearly 100 student leaders volunteer to welcome the incoming Class of 2022,” said Principal Gerard Owenburg. “I look forward to getting
to know them throughout their high school careers,” added Calhoun Principal Nicole Hollings. “I hope that they all find an interest about which they can be passionate and that they pursue it.” Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools’ administrators were outside greeting students on the sunny Tuesday morning. Principal Carlo Conte said he was eager for students’ arrival and “seeing the building come to life.” Merrick Avenue welcomed students with fanfare as Ram black and gold balloons marked the entrance and a “Welcome Back” sign adored the building’s front lawn. Even
the school mascot made an appearance. The district’s theme of “Where Wellness Matters” was also introduced to staff during two days of professional development last week. “This year, the district will also be extending our commitment to every student’s academic, social and emotional well-being by offering extended hours at our School Counseling and Wellness Centers (formerly referred to as guidance),” said Superintendent John DeTommaso. “We will continue to practice self-care and maintain a positive outlook to ensure positive outcomes for our students.”
Summer Culinary Arts Academy Half Hollow Hills student Sammy Brandstein enjoyed the opportunity to build a foundation of culinary skills under the tutelage of professional chefs in a state-of-theart kitchen during the Nassau BOCES and Hofstra Summer Camp Culinary Arts Academy. Nassau BOCES partnered with Hofstra’s Continuing Education program, as well as the college’s Summer Camp, to offer a variety of exciting and fun educational opportunities for young people this summer. Students entering grades 6-11 were offered a number of programs providing experiences in career
exploration, arts, sciences, outdoor education and more. Other programs offered a variety of experiences in fields such as Aviation, Construction Trades, Veterinary Medicine and Graphic Design. Some programs were offered at three separate levels — Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced. Programs were conducted in different locations, such as Nassau BOCES state-of-the-art Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center in Westbury, Caumsett State Historic Park in Lloyd Harbor and the Nassau BOCES Brookville Environmental Education Center in
Brookville. Through two featured programs this year, Nassau BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education enabled campers to discover the unique habitats of Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve and the Brookville Outdoor Education site. “A Field Study in Marine Biology” gave campers a chance to become Marine Biologists in training. In “STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) Marine Exploration Technology,” teams of campers built an underwater ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle).

Award winning journalist Geralyn Lucas, author of Why I Wore Lipstick to My Mastectomy and Then Came Life, will speak at the Annual Celebration of Survivorship Evening of the Adelphi New York Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program. Both of Lucas’s memoirs were translated around the world and received starred reviews in Library Journal. The television film production of Lipstick garnered an Emmynomination and was an Entertainment Weekly “Must Watch of the Week.” Geralyn’s story was also
featured in Nora and Delia Ephron’s smash offBroadway show, Love, Loss and What I Wore. Joining her are three other breast cancer survivors: Jeff Flynn of East Meadow, who is a former support group member and currently a hotline volunteer responding to calls from men concerned about breast cancer; Jamaicanborn Sonia Avery-Williams of Rockville Center, who is a nurse; and Susan Leach, also of Rockville Center, a former support group member and manager at a health care agency. The free event will be held on Thursday, October 18th at Adelphi University’s University Center. Doors will open at 6 pm and speakers begin at 7 pm. A light supper will be served and there will be raffles. In addition, the breast cancer organization, Kat’s Ribbon of Hope, will be honored. Kat’s Ribbon of
Hope’s partnership with the Adelphi program supports their mutual goal to provide assistance to women who would otherwise not have access to quality breast cancer treatment. Katerina Dinas Raptis, a breast cancer survivor who is the co-founder of KROH, was diagnosed when she was 32. She says that while having breast cancer was “a nightmare,” she was blessed with the support of her family and excellent medical care. Many women do not have such support so she was determined to help. She and her husband, George Raptis, and sister, Despina Yarian, established Kat’s Ribbon of Hope in 2013. East Meadow students, teachers and other staff members completed day one of the 2018-2019 school year on September 5th. They were greeted in the morning by district and building administrators, who also showed up at afternoon dismissals to express congratulations on

Old Bethpage Village Restoration (OBVR) will host the 176th Annual Long Island Fair for the second and final weekend of 2018, on September 22nd and 23rd. Visitors to the Long Island Fair enjoy Lumberjack shows, Circus Dubois, Loop Rawlins One Man Wild West Show, Pig Racing, Team Rock Ninja Experience and the Butterfly Encounter. Stilt walkers traverse the grounds, and entertainers enthrall families with puppets, juggling and storytelling. These festivities continue a 176 year Long Island tradition. Attractions such as livestock shows, tractor rides, Civil War reenactments, and Rough Rider demonstrations whisk riders back to another era. Visitors will also find historical demonstrations: blacksmithing, weaving, and broom-making. These
priceless demonstrations make for a fascinating and indelible education in history for both children and adults. Tickets are required for camel rides, pony rides, and a 19th-century carousel and bounce houses. and Museums and the Agricultural Society of Queens, Nassau and Suffolk Counties. Thousands of exhibits are entered every year in friendly competition, with blue ribbon categories including livestock, flowers and vegetables from farms and home gardens, culinary, needlework, hobbies, and a junior division for those 13 and younger. Merrick Welcomes Back Faculty To kick off the new school year, the Merrick School District welcomed back faculty and support staff, including those new to the Merrick schools. Veteran faculty members were recognized by their respective building principals, and those with 25 years of service or more were also congratulated by Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dominick Palma. “Each year is different, each year is better and we are the luckiest
people in the world,” said Dr. Palma, participating in his 30th opening day as an educator. “Every day will be [hard] work, but we are surrounded by children who allow us to pause from whatever challenges we have going on in our heads…and make us better people every day.” Board of Education President Sigal Negrin also thanked the faculty and staff for all that they do for Merrick students, including the
custodial and maintenance staff for getting the schools in wonderful shape for the start of the school year. “The community at large may never be able to express its thanks for all that you do for our children,” Negrin said. “You are the most integral part of our community. Learning at Newbridge Road Third-graders at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District began in the new year by spending some time getting to know each other. Although they are in three classes, the students will have common learning experiences throughout the year. On Sept. 7, thirdgraders gathered in the auditorium for a STEAM activity, which focused on science, technology, engineering, the arts and math. Students worked in small groups to “Save Fred.” They had to figure
out how to get the gummy worm Fred from his boat (a plastic cup) to his life preserver (a gummy ring) without falling into the water (the table). Children could not touch any part of the setup with their hands and could only use paper clips to make the transfer. Every group included at least one student from each thirdgrade class so students could bond with other peers in their grade. The activity required problemsolving and critical thinking skills, so the children had to share their ideas about the best way to
Save Fred. The students also participated in a connection activity in which each child shared a fact about his or her summer vacation. If another student could make a personal connection, they would link arms. Additionally, all students signed a “Make This An Awesome Year” banner. Teachers said that they students will participate in many more group activities throughout the year to regularly bring the thirdgrade learning community together

Tyler Bissoondial, an eighth-grader at Grand Avenue Middle School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District, was recently chosen as one of the three hundred semifinalists in the Broadcom MASTERS competition. Bissoondial conducted his research project as a seventh-grader, under the guidance of science research teacher, Tami Cruz. “Tyler is a very hardworking and talented student who is always willing to help his peers,” said Cruz. His project is “MicroRNA-156 regulates gametophyte to sporophyte development and sensitivity to salinity
in Ceratopteris richardii.” In his research, Bissoondial investigated the mechanisms by which salt stress affects the fertility of plants. He demonstrated that changes in the level of specific molecules, called microRNAs, can affect development and fertility of plants, especially during salt stress. Understanding the mechanisms by which plants respond to salt stress can help develop strategies to improve fertilization and crop production. He was nominated to participate in the national Broadcom MASTERS competition after winning first place in the regional Long Island Science and Engineering Fair in March.

resident, has been a teacher for 24 years, teaching in a variety of areas. She began her teaching career in the New York City Department of Education in Brooklyn where she was a fourth grade classroom teacher, a second grade classroom teacher, a social studies cluster teacher and finally, a reading specialist. Case then served as a reading specialist for eight years in Hempstead before arriving in the Levittown Public Schools as a reading specialist. In addition, she is currently an adjunct professor at Queens College in the elementary education department. Prior to her experience in the classroom, Case
attended St. John’s University where she earned her bachelor of science in elementary education. She then received her master’s degree in Literacy and her professional diploma in Administration and Supervision. Case is excited to be staying in Levittown and taking on the role as assistant principal. “I have many goals as an assistant principal, but my one main goal is to be here for the teachers so that together, we can help our students succeed,” she said. Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town will offer a Toddler Arts & Crafts Program throughout the fall. This 8-week program will be held at the Town’s Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center Community Room, and is open to children ages 2 through 4. Registration begins September 10th, from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm, at the Town’s Parks Department Recreation Office in Town Hall South, at 977 Hicksville Road, in Massapequa. “This program is a wonderful way to help support your toddler’s development through nurturing their artistic expression,” Supervisor Saladino said. “The Town’s Toddler Arts & Crafts program has proven to be an extremely popular one here in the Town, and I urge those who wish for their toddler to participate to come down and register beginning Monday, September 10, as this 8 week program fills up quickly on a first come first serve basis.” There is much evidence to support the importance of preschool socialization and learning in 2018.
