Division Avenue High School Principal John Coscia and MacArthur High School Principal Joseph Sheehan proudly spoke during the meeting about their deserving student. This is Fuchs’ second year serving as Division Avenue’s student liaison. The exceptional senior has been recognized as an Advanced Placement Scholar with Distinction and will be receiving the AP Capstone Diploma in June. She is also president of Student Council, president of the Science Olympiad Team, an active
member of the School Development Committee and has artwork displayed at the Heckscher Museum of Art. A dedicated member of the MacArthur family, Johnson is enrolled in a college preparatory program which includes several AP and college credit courses. Smooth Opening Bright yellow buses and a cool fall morning were the backdrop for a successful school opening in Wantagh School District. Students at all of Wantagh’s schools toted their backpacks full of school supplies and entered the buildings with smiles on their faces as
they greeted teachers to start the 2019-2020 school year on Sept. 3. Members of the board of education, Superintendent of Schools John McNamara, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr. Marc Ferris and Assistant Superintendent for
Business Anthony Clements joined the principals in welcoming students at the door and to give a hand with helping younger students off the bus. Mr. McNamara said he was pleased with the district’s smooth opening.
“The faculty and students were enthusiastic about the new school year and instruction began immediately,” he said. “I am confident that 20192020 will be a productive and positive school year for all Wantagh students.”

The Charity of the Month for September is: The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org
The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. This organization truly makes a difference in the lives of seniors nationwide. Often the elderly gets overlooked or they simply can’t seem to achieve their goals on their own. This is where Twilight Wish steps in. Although their headquarters are located in Pennsylvania, the foundation has chapters located around the nation. James Ciervo, who devoted much of his life to helping seniors, created their Long Island Chapter 15 years ago. His career was in the senior health care industry for many years and he continues to help seniors through the Twilight Wish Foundation today. The process of applying to be a wish recipient is fairly simple. You can visit their website at www.twilightwish.org and click on the “Wishes” tab followed by “Request A Twilight Wish”. From here you can start the process. Applications can be submitted for yourself or on behalf of someone else. The recipient of the wish must be 65 years of age or older (or a permanent resident of an eldercare facility), a legal US citizen, have an annual income of less than 200% of current federal government published poverty level income, or be unable to grant your own wish (not including financial reasons), have a history of giving back to others, be cognitively and physically capable of communicating and
experiencing the wish, and may be able to provide physician documentation when requested. The foundation has a committee that meets on a monthly basis to review new applications and they determine the eligibility of the applicants and wish requests. If approved, the foundation will grant the wish as funding and resources become available (if they are not already available). Jackie, a local Long Islander, was nominated to be a wish recipient by her friend at work. Jackie works at Walmart and would walk to work and assist residents at her local nursing home while she wasn’t working. Her friends wanted to make it easier for her to get around. After the wish was received, James Ciervo and Barbara Ransom of the Greater Port Jefferson Chamber of Commerce helped get Jackie a beautiful bicycle. They brought the bicycle to her workplace and the smile on her face was ear to ear! This foundation is presently looking for more wish applicants in the Long Island area. With the rededicated memorial site serving as the focal point, students and staff from Park Avenue Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District gathered on the front lawn shortly after the school day began on Sept. 11 to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. Boy Scout Nicholas Carrano, a 2016 Park Avenue graduate, overhauled the 9/11 memorial garden for his Eagle Scout community service project. During the summer, Nicholas and his volunteers built a stone ring around a tree,
that contains a memorial plaque, a peace pole with the word “peace” in 12 different languages, and plants and flowers. He traveled from nearby Mepham High School to attend the ceremony. During the ceremony, custodian Tom Clare taught sixth graders Isabelle Crocenzi and Dylan Tuccitto how to raise the American flag on the school’s flagpole, and also how to lower it to halfstaff. All students recited the Pledge of Allegiance, sang the national anthem and “Proud to Be an American,” and observed a moment of silence.
“On Sept. 11, Patriot Day, we come together as a school community to honor all of those past, present and future servicemen and women, and first responders such as firefighters and police officers,” Principal Eileen Speidel said. “We thank them for their service and for protecting us and for being willing to give their lives for us.” She additionally thanked Nicholas for his hard work in redesigning the memorial garden, and noted to the elementary students that is the model of good citizenship.
