5 Tips to Prepare for Window Replacement
Winter is coming, and for millions of people who reside in areas of the country that see the mercury drop considerably between December and March, that means prioritizing staying warm. Inefficient or aging housing materials may compromise your ability to do just that. Drafts from doors, poorly protected attics and basements and aging windows may force heating systems to work extra hard to maintain interior temperatures. Replacing old windows can make a home quieter by blocking out exterior noises. Consumer Reports also notes that new windows are often easier to clean and maintain than older varieties. Many homeowners are interested in replacing their windows, but may not know where to start. These guidelines can help the process along. 1. Get several estimates. Ask for recommendations from neighbors or other people in your area on which companies they used to install their replacement windows.
When you interview the prospects, ask several questions about how they go about installing the windows. Questions can include: • How long will the project take? • Will I need to remain home during the process? • Do you discard of old debris? • What is the protocol for installation during inclement weather? 2. Research permits. Most home renovation projects need to be approved by the local municipality. Go to the permit office and find out the requirements. Some window contractors will include securing permits in the cost of the project. After the project is completed, an inspector will come by and ensure the work was done according to code. 3. Change up the appearance. Look at the type of hardware you have around the home and other fixtures. Choose windows that have locks or latches that can match those features for continuity of style. Think about choosing a
different style or frame color of the window, or a different type of window to improve efficiency and function. 4. Research top window manufacturers. It’s tempting to purchase windows based on price alone, but replacement windows are often a decision that only has to be made once or twice for the life of the home. Invest in durable windows that will have staying power. Consumer Reports offers unbiased reviews on various window brands and can help homeowners make sound decisions. 5. Prepare for installation. Clear pathways, remove window treatments and disconnect window alarm systems. Plan for one to two days of installation, advises Andersen Windows and Doors. Keep pets and children away from work areas. Replacement windows can be a smart investment. New windows can improve the look of a home, reduce heating costs and can keep interior spaces comfortable.

Rosh Hashanah is an important holiday on the Jewish calendar. According to the Jewish National Fund, Rosh Hashanah marks the Jewish New Year and is a celebration of the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve. Adherents to the Jewish faith wish each other a good, sweet year ahead on Rosh Hashanah, a day that is steeped in tradition. One such tradition is the sounding of the shofar, which the JNF notes is representative of the trumpet blast that sounded the coronation of kings. The sounding of the shofar also symbolizes a call to repentance. The shofar itself is a ram’s horn that calls to mind the story of the Blinding of Isaac, an event that occurred on Rosh Hashanah and involved a ram taking Isaac’s place as an offering to God. Of course, no celebration of Rosh Hashanah, which takes place over two days, is complete without a festive meal. Foods served during Rosh Hashanah celebrations tend to be sweet and are meant to symbolize hopes for an enjoyable year ahead. In addition, the JNF says it is customary on Rosh Hashanah to eat foods with names that allude to blessing and prosperity. In 2020, Rosh Hashanah begins on the evening of Friday, September 18 and ends on the evening of Sunday, September 20.

When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational. An East Meadow native and East Meadow High School graduate is serving in the U.S. Navy aboard the guided-missile destroyer, USS Halsey. Petty Officer 2nd Class Exavier Munozpolanco is an Information Systems Technician, serving aboard USS Halsey homeported out of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Halsey is underway in 7th Fleet conducting operations in the IndoPacific while assigned to the forward deployed Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15. Approximately 300 men and women serve aboard the ship. Their jobs are highly specialized and keep each part of the destroyer running smoothly, according to Navy officials. Information Systems Technicians are responsible for a myriad of tasks day in and day out. While operating in 7th Fleet their most important
job is ensuring Halsey maintains all network and communication 24/7. “The thing I enjoy about my rate is the versatility of how our equipment integrates with almost every single part of the ship,” said Munozpolanco. “ITs are vital to sending and receiving any communications on our ship.” With more than 50 percent of the world’s shipping tonnage and a third of the world’s crude oil passing through the region, the United States has historic and enduring interests in this part of the world. Forward-deployed Sailors are crucial to the success of the global navy mission and earn high praise from their leaders. “I love that we are able to experience so many different things and visit unique places,” said Munozpolanco. “Crossing
the equator three times within the same year is something many others may not have the opportunity to do.” A U.S. Navy destroyer is a multi-mission ship that can operate independently or as part of a larger group of ships at sea. The ship is equipped with a vertical launching system, tomahawk missiles, torpedoes, guns and Phalanx close-in weapons systems. Halsey is underway conducting operations in support of security and stability in the Indo-Pacific while assigned to Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15, the Navy’s largest forwarddeployed DESRON and the U.S. 7th Fleet’s principal surface force.. Each summer, students from the Levittown Public Schools participate in an engaging reading program called the district’s Summer Reading Extravaganza. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the program continued this summer in a virtual format to promote literacy in the community and give students and faculty a shared reading experience.
Levittown students entering fifth grade read “The Kid Who Ran for President” by Dan Gutman as part of a community-wide summer reading project. Students and their families were encouraged to visit the Levittown elementary summer reading program website which provided supplemental activities that parents could do with their children, interactive games for students and
some information on the election process. Middle school students entering grades 6-8 read “Pay It Forward” by Catherine Ryan Hyde and had the opportunity to register for one of three summer reading discussion days through the Levittown Public Library’s website. Through the video conferencing platform Zoom, students interacted with their
peers, librarians, Director of ELA Kerin Slattery and teachers from Jonas E. Salk Middle School and Wisdom Lane Middle School. Although they could not physically be together to share their questions and thoughts about the book like in previous summers, the students had virtual discussions about “Pay It Forward,” participated in games and had a chance to enter a virtual raffle.
“The students seemed to love the Zoom events,” said Mrs. Slattery. “It was heartwarming to have so many kids join us. Even virtual, summer reading is a success!” In addition, the middle school students were encouraged to visit the summer reading extravaganza website to contribute to a blog about the book, engage in a Pay it Forward Challenge, complete

Summer Program Virtually Connects Levittown Readers activities and more for extra raffle tickets. Thirty raffle participants from each middle school will be randomly selected for a meet-andgreet experience with Richard Specht from the “Cultivating Kindness” program and receive a special message from their summer reading book author, Catherine Ryan Hyde, at some point during the 2020-2021 school year.

In an effort to promote long-term water conservation, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Legislator Siela A. Bynoe kicked off the “Smart Sprinkler” Reimbursement Program. Through the new County initiative, eligible Nassau County homeowners can apply for a partial reimbursement for the cost of installing weatherbased irrigation controller technology - commonly referred to as smart sprinkler systems - at their home. “This summer, as we go through an abnormally dry season, we are reminded of how important it is to conserve our precious water,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “Each summer, water usage goes up 400%. We can make a difference by changing our habits, and embracing technology to do the job for us. I hope this reimbursement encourages people to upgrade to a smarter lawn watering system, which will save water — and help
residents save money on their water bills.” “By incentivizing the use of proven water-saving technology, the Smart Sprinkler Reimbursement Program puts money back into the pockets of residents while supporting Nassau County’s ongoing efforts to conserve and protect our most precious natural resource,” said Nassau County Legislator Siela A. Bynoe. “I urge every eligible homeowner to take full advantage of this initiative - one that bolsters regional efforts to preserve our single-source aquifer as a reliable supply of clean, safe, and plentiful drinking water for future generations.” Qualified homeowners can receive up to a $150 credit toward the cost of installing a smart sprinkler system. The reimbursement program does not apply to residents who are already eligible through their water supplier for financial assistance in purchasing smart sprinkler technology. Rebates are drawn from a
$100,000 allocation and will be provided on a firstcome, first-served basis. Residents can apply for the reimbursement by visiting www. nassaucountyny.gov/1547/ consumer-affairs Weather-based irrigation controllers are equipped with smart water sensors that detect rainfall and prevent over-watering. Smart sprinkler systems supplement this data with a variety of metrics and data provided by the user to determine how fast water will evaporate from soil in a yard. Based on this information, smart sprinkler systems can break up watering times into smaller segments automatically to maximize efficiency, help water soak in, and reduce runoff. Smart sprinklers also monitor temperature, keep track of previous weather and adjust irrigation levels to meet the needs of each zone. These smart adaptations help save water and in turn save the homeowner money on their water bill.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. To accomplish their mission, they focus on prevention, research, education, services, their Lend a Helping Hand program and awareness.
As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the
