The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received more than $2,000 in donations from friends and family members in memory of Nicolette, who passed away from an overdose at 20 years old. With the heroin and opiate crisis raging, the demand for LICADD’s services has increased exponentially. Significant price drops in the street price of heroin on Long Island, have increased the number of young people who are using the drug. The Hurricane Junior Golf Tour (HJGT) is excited to announce the Major Championship at Bethpage. The HJGT hosts over 190 tournaments per year throughout the country. The HJGT is the largest junior golf tour in the country and has been in operation for eight years. The tour offers junior boys and girls between the ages of 1118 opportunities to earn national exposure while playing at premier venues. Since we are an open tour, we encourage any level of player to participate, from high 70’s to 100. Carolina juniors will have the

opportunity to compete on the national stage against players from all over the country. The HJGT’s next stop in New York in 2015 will be the Major Championship at Bethpage on Saturday September 17th and Sunday the 18th at the Bethpage State Park (Blue) in Farmingdale. Players can register as a member or non-member for the event. HJGT Members can play the event for $209 while non-members play at $254. It’s been days, and still no sign of my human. No light on in the kitchen. No food pellet delivery at dinnertime. No – dare I say it – bath time. Nothing. Where did she go? Alone in my bowl, I swim my solitary laps, counting down the hours, days, weeks… it must be weeks by now. Just me and my plant (which, by the way, is starting to look pretty tasty at this point). I should’ve known something was up when I found a few extra flakes in my bowl right after the last human sighting. And the suitcase… what was that for? Come to think of it, I heard something about “vacation,” whatever that

is, and then this giant bettashaped vitamin was placed in my bowl with promises of food coming shortly. When? It’s already been at least a month. Time tends to fast forward when you live in a bowl. But, wait… here it is – a flake. And another. Where did they come from? No human in sight, but this little vitamin seems to be melting into food! Oh thank goodness! She didn’t forget about me after all. I wonder if she’ll ever be back? {826 Days Later…} I hear a noise! The front door… the light… MY HUMAN HAS RETURNED! Oh boy, oh boy! If I had longer fins, I’d give her the biggest hug ever! Oh, and here comes the good food,

my gourmet pellets, with a few extra thrown in – how sweet. She didn’t abandon me after all. But where did she go? I see the suitcase… but no presents? No souvenirs for Buddy? And what’s this about “bath time” now? She’s been home five minutes and already this nonsense about cleaning out the remnants of the vitamin from my bowl. Good grief. There had better be a good explanation for all this. I expect a special trip to the pet store this weekend to pick out a new toy… and extra food… and at least a week’s notice the next time one of these “vacation” things takes place. Better yet, I expect to be invited along.

Named a Reward School The Levittown School District is pleased to announce that New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia has named Division Avenue High School a New York State Reward School for high performance without any significant gaps in student achievement. Each year, SED identifies schools statewide who meet the criteria as high performing schools or schools that have made the most progress without significant gaps in student achievement. This year, Division Avenue High School was one of 356

schools that received this prestigious designation. To be identified as a Reward School, a school must be among the top 20 percent of schools statewide for English language arts and math performance for both the 2012-2013 and 20132014 school years or be among the top 10 percent of schools in terms of gains in ELA and math performance in the 20132014 school year. A school must also have made adequately yearly progress for the 2012-13 and 20132014 school years for all measures for which the school is accountable,

including the requirement that 95 percent of all groups participated in the ELA and math assessments. Finally, to be named a Reward School, a school must not have unacceptable gaps in student performance. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald said she was proud of this significant achievement. “The student, faculty, administration and parents of the Division Avenue High School community worked hard to earn this honor, an I could not be happier for them,” she said.

With their backpacks and school supplies in tow, the students entered their new classrooms eager to learn, and instruction began immediately. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald, Assistant Superintendent

for Instruction Debbie Rifkin and members of the Board of Education were also on hand during the day to welcome the students to the start of the 2015-2016 academic year. Dr. McDonald reported that the school year started smoothly and on a positive note. “As my staff and I toured each of the buildings on opening day it was absolutely wonderful to see the effects of all of the hard work put in by our building

and grounds staff this summer,” she remarked. “It was also extremely gratifying to see cheerful bus drivers and teachers who were visibly thrilled to be back in school. My favorite observation, however, was watching our students eagerly walk in at every level, new supplies in hand, greeting our teachers, administrators and staff with big smiles. It was a great day to be the Superintendent of the Levittown Schools.”

Women Achievers Breakfast The Women’s Fund of Long Island (WFLI) will host its 21st Annual Women Achievers Breakfast on October 8th, a much-anticipated event that draws more than 700 attendees each year as it celebrates the accomplishments of Long Island women who have made outstanding contributions to their

communities and their industries. This year’s honorees are Isma Habib Chaudhry, MD, President of the Islamic Center of Long Island; Dorothy Forte, co-chair of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer Outreach program; and Bernice Sims, author, civil rights activist, social worker and artist. By: Sanford H. Weinberg As youngsters, we called them darning needles, From the myth that if you went to sleep by a stream, Dragonflies would sew your eyelids shut. Anatomically, they sport an elongated body With patches of shiny colors, Appearing jewel-like in the sunlight. From the Latin Anisoptera, meaning its hind wings Are shorter and broader than the forewings, all mostly colorless. . A delight to observe in flight... hovering like a helicopter, Able to change direction in an instance. Zooming at times at 35 miles per hour, Darting up and down and even backward. As nymphs, hatched from eggs, tiny wingless creatures wiggle forth. Thriving on worms, mosquito larvae and tadpoles. Hiding in weeds or mud, they are aquatic, Living in fresh water, ponds and streams. In the adult stage, they are able to fly across oceans, Albeit their lives are mostly spent as nymphs With an adult life span of scarcely a few days or weeks. Their vision is better than good, with many photoreceptor Cells to assist them in seizing small insects in flight.
