Bellmore. Martin Avenue student Peter Mayo said he is excited to do science experiments this year and for the outdoor education trip to Caumsett State Park in the spring. He also wants to set a positive example for the school’s younger students. “It’s my last year here,” he said, “and I want to make it the best.” Malone noted that it’s the teachers who do the “heavy lifting” on the first day of school as they welcome the students and set the tone. After introductions, many teachers read aloud books that focused on persistence and perseverance, a reminder to the students that they can accomplish anything this year.
Town of Hempstead Supervisor Anthony J. Santino, Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, local children and volunteers at the Hempstead Animal Shelter kicked off a storytelling program for dogs as a therapeutic way to transition pets from abusive situations to loving homes. The program is an initiative designed specifically to socialize victimized dogs. The Hempstead Animal Shelter will begin accepting volunteers, including students who need community service or reading credit, immediately. “The shelter has various ways of nurturing pets that are awaiting adoption,” said Santino. “Reading or having conversations with pets who may have never heard calm, soothing voices before can help to
heal some of these pets and make them more adoptable and family friendly. Anything we can do to find a “fur-ever” home for these pets is worth pursuing.” The book chosen to

Nearly 2,100 elementary students donned new sneakers and sported fresh haircuts as they arrived on September 6th for the beginning of the 2016-2017 school year in North Bellmore. Among those were the 278 kindergartners who will be part of the class of 2029. Principals noted the energy the first day of school brings, from Eileen Speidel, beginning her 10th year at Park Avenue School, to Leyna Malone, the new principal at Martin Avenue School. “It’s always exciting on the first day,” Speidel said. “A lot of enthusiasm and smiles.” Park Avenue’s 325 students began the day by

September 2nd. Administrators, teachers and faculty members greeted the students with cheerful smiles and warm welcomes as they navigated the hallways to find their new classrooms,
reunite with friends and unload backpacks full of school supplies. The district welcomes parents, staff, and new and returning students to another successful school year.

My Summer Slumber Buddy here, checking in on behalf of my Human, who has just returned from one of those “vacation” outings I detest so much. You would think, after over 18 months of residence, I would have earned the right to tag along on a trip; but alas, Buddy the Betta was abandoned yet again, left to my own devices. Don’t get me wrong, the solitude is nice on occasion. No Human faces pressed up against the glass making fishy faces, no incessant tapping on the counter to get my attention, no bath times to contend with… but eventually, a fish does become lonely. Every morning, I would wake from my slumber expecting to be greeted with the usual love and adoration – and breakfast, of course. But nothing. Days passed, and all I found was a measly dissolving chalk-like thing with flakes embedded in it. At first, I thought it was a pillow; but eventually, I realized this was the best option on the menu for me for the time being. Speaking of bizarre sleeping
choices, it seems that every time my Human overhauls the tank to clean my gravel and my beloved plant, she never puts things quite back where she found them. Gone are my cozy nooks to snuggle in; replaced instead by mounds of pebbles. This has forced me to explore other options, among them, the top of the filter, where one strong current can send me sailing to a spot of rest just below the water line. Comfy indeed. Of course, when my Human forgets to replenish my water from time to time, I find myself hanging off the side, seemingly in a state of unrest. But not to worry, I can sleep just about anywhere, in any position. That includes laying on a leaf, wrapped around the filter tube, or just about vertical, face pressed against the gravel. Just turn my light off and “Do Not Disturb” – a fish needs his beauty rest, especially one as lovely as me. The last time I had nestled in for the night – or morning, as it were – I was rudely awakened by calls of “bath time for Buddy!”

Being the stubborn sort, I wrapped my fins firmly around the filter tube and refused to budge, gleefully watching as my Human tried to nudge me out of my corner with the back end of a spoon. Only when she began to lift the filter out with me on top of it did I realize that this was a losing battle. Little did I know that this particular bath was in preparation for the vacation I was not to be invited on. Talk about adding insult to injury. On a somewhat positive note, my Human did leave the light on for me, since I seem to flit around with more ease when my tank is illuminated. Better yet, when she returned, I was rewarded with “bonus” flakes for being such a good boy while she was gone – you know, not getting sucked into the filter or anything. ‘Til next time, this is Buddy signing off on behalf of his Human. pets. “The hands on experience these students get, and the benefit the pets receive from this reading program, is priceless,” Senior Councilwoman Goosby said. “I hope more students participate so they too can get the warm and amazing feeling of volunteering for a good cause. It’s a win win.” According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), reading helps pets become accustomed to new people and experiences. A soothing voice and presence can calm agitated or fearful dogs, which helps them more easily transition and eventually find homes. When dogs hear a voice that’s not
threatening or nasty they are not fearful according to experts. The subject matter of the books doesn’t make a difference, at least not to the dogs. “The more comfortable we can make these dogs around people, the more likely they are to get adopted and enjoy a great life with a loving family,” said Councilman D’Esposito. The benefits of this program are not just for the dogs. Students who participate practice the skill of reading and enhance their reading ability. Students who are apprehensive to read aloud among their peers also gain confidence through dog reading programs. During the conference, Hunter learned from medical professionals and medical school academic leaders. Hunter would like to pursue a career in neurobiology. Alzheimer’s disease has impacted Hunter’s family and is the driving force behind his interest in the medical field. Hunter noted that the highlight of the conference was hearing former WWE wrestler and speaker Christopher Nowinski, who spoke on the relationship

Officially Open A rainy morning did not dampen the spirits of Wantagh School District students who toted their backpacks full of school supplies and disembarked from bright yellow school buses and carpools ready and excited to start the 2016-2017 school year on September 1st. Members of the Wantagh Board of Education,
Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction John McNamara and assistant Superintendent for Business Adriana Silver joined the principals of each school to welcome students as they filed through the front doors and into their classrooms. Ms. Goldberg said she
was impressed with the district’s smooth opening. “Both the students and the teachers were enthusiastic and instruction began immediately,” she said. “I am confident that this will be a productive and positive school year for all Wantagh students.”

Ninth-graders across Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District were recently treated to educational and entertaining freshman orientations at their new buildings. At Wellington C. Mepham High School, students enrolled in the district’s Broadcast Communication tested out equipment in the new state-of-the-art studio. Students within the district can apply for this
four-year program, housed at Mepham. In addition to building tours, students learned about the goals and expectations of the program for the upcoming year. At Sanford H. Calhoun High School, senior student leaders hosted small group discussions with incoming freshmen about “Being a Calhoun Student.” “Students were split into
small groups and had the opportunity to hear from the seniors and ask them questions,” explained Vice Principal Dr. Neil Testa. “They were also tasked with exploring, ‘what would I want to tell the ninth grade me about the next four years at Calhoun?” Upperclassmen at John F. Kennedy High School were also on hand to assist, offering insight and advice to help with a successful first year in high school.

McDonald’s/Kaufman Enterprises A Family Franchise Expands Its Brand
Kaufman Enterprises is a family-run, awardwinning McDonald’s franchise which owns and operates sixteen McDonald’s restaurants across Long Island. As part of a far-reaching effort to elevate customers’ experience, McDonald’s is testing a new kind of restaurant at one of these sixteen locations, 655 Fulton Street in Farmingdale, which had its grand opening on May 26th. This followed the premiere unveiling at their Medford restaurant. The new model features interactive kiosks, tableside service and a brand-new design aesthetic.
This innovative approach has been implemented in 30 prototype restaurants across the New York-Tri State region so far, as a result of customerled efforts to align the brand with evolving tastes and preferences. The in-store kiosks allow customers to tailor the menu to their own tastes with an assortment of ingredients, including a choice of bread, cheeses, sauces and toppings. These items are then made to order and are served tableside by McDonald’s staff. The more traditional menu items are still available as well, displayed on digital menu boards behind the counter. Mwaffak Kanjee, General Manager and Vice President of McDonald’s New York Metro Region, stated that this new program has garnered widespread positive feedback so far from both the customers and those employees being trained at these two Long Island locations. While visiting the Farmingdale restaurant, it was apparent that the customers enjoyed the added convenience of being able to customize their order using the new menu items and sit
down with their families to wait for it, rather than having to stand in line. The employees exuded a friendly, positive attitude and seemed genuinely happy with this new opportunity for growth presented by the company. Founded in 1960 by Leon Weil and Irv Klein, the first of their McDonald’s locations opened in East Northport. After Weil’s retirement, Klein expanded the business to include four additional restaurants by 1971. Six years later, Klein’s son-in-law, Jonah Kaufman, joined the team as the company’s first Director of Operations. The following year, Jonah became an owner/operator, resulting in the creation the Klein-Kaufman Corporation. The Klein-Kaufman Corporation grew immensely throughout the 1980’s and 90’s. It earned several outstanding restaurant awards, including the prestigious “Golden Arch” Award for outstanding restaurant operations and contributions to the McDonald’s corporation. In 1996, Klein retired, leaving full ownership of the restaurants to Kaufman, who formed Kaufman Enterprises.
In 2005, Jonah continued to expand the business by bringing on his son, Josh. At first, Josh’s main role was the Director of Operations. With the same level of excitement that marks the beginning of baseball season every spring, the North Bellmore School District began its new year with great fanfare. Using a baseball theme, the district welcomed back nearly 600 staff members during Superintendent’s Conference Day on August 31st at Saw Mill Road Elementary School. With the band Joseph Webb and Friends playing “Take Me Out to the Ballgame,” Superintendent Marie Testa introduced her “starting lineup” of board of education members, administrators, the North Bellmore Teachers Association executive board and North Bellmore Teachers Center directors, who all walked up the aisle on a piece of green
turf. As teachers arrived at the school, they took group photos in front of the backdrop of a baseball field, and were given North Bellmore baseball caps. The band had the staff dancing the morning away to several songs including Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” and Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’.” Testa said all songs chosen were uplifting in nature to encourage teachers to “lift up children and lift up each other.” Her message for teachers was to work their hardest to ensure every child lives up to his or her full potential. Before the music began, teachers heard from Board of Education President Nina Lanci, NBTC copresidents Lois EihilowPeck and Jill Skelly, Principals Association
Smooth Opening President Faith Skelos and NBTC Directors Lorraine Doyle and Linda Mann. The day concluded with faculty meetings and professional development workshops. On September 1st, grade-level teachers learned about the new writing program while other faculty members and support staff took part in training sessions related to their specialties. Testa said the purpose of the day was to emphasize the fact that even though North Bellmore has five elementary schools, everyone in the district is part of one team. “The goal was to inspire people to be proud of being educators,” she said, “not just teachers, but everyone who works in the school district.”
Toting backpacks and school supplies, Bellmore students disembarked from the iconic, yellow school buses and carpools eager and excited to start the 2016-2017 school year. Students enrolled in the district’s three elementary schools received a warm welcome from board of education trustees, administrators and faculty as they walked single-file to their classrooms. The students were not only ready to establish new routines, but were happy to become reacquainted
with former classmates and to make new friends. At the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo and Board of Education trustees Jay L.T. Breakstone, Janet Goller and Maryanne Kelly welcomed the district’s youngest students at the bus circle. Dr. Famularo noted that he was not only impressed with the district’s smooth opening, but the way in which students and teachers were well prepared to
begin instruction. He also said that the district will continue to emphasize the education of the whole child through the Bellmore Stars program and promote the core values of dedication, respect, integrity, teamwork and trust. “I look forward to continuing to build upon our unique ‘Community of Learners’ and providing opportunities for our students to become productive and global citizens,” Dr. Famularo said.

Seventeen students are enrolled in Mandarian at Grand Avenue, while 19 have signed up for the language at Merrick Avenue Middle School. “This year, the Mandarin students will begin to develop their communicative skills and learn about many aspects of Chinese culture,” said World Languages Chairperson Renee Fallon. Merrick Avenue saw a parking lot refacing, additional 35 flat panel screens and music and library rooms renovations, which were completed by district maintenance staff. Bathroom and heating/ cooling work is currently underway. Additionally, the district added an ENL (English as a New Language) program at Grand Avenue, where students were previously transferred to Merrick Avenue. At John F. Kennedy High School, freshmen were off to a philanthropic start, as the class of 2020 adviser Lisa Scherer initiated the first community service
project for the year; collecting school supplies for a school in Louisiana devastated by recent flooding. The districtwide C.H.A.M.P [culinary and hospitality applied management program], housed at Kennedy, has a newly installed commercial kitchen, as well as new science labs. At Wellington C. Mepham High School, students enrolled in the districtwide broadcast communications program were able to get up close with state-of-the-art studio equipment. “Throughout the year students will be utilizing field bags and then the Mac labs to edit and complete video projects,” explained Vice Principal Marie Netto. Other completed projects include updated science labs and new bathrooms. At the Meadowbrook Alternative Program, housed in the central administration building, students will be utilizing a newly added science lab and soon – a Mac lab, courtesy of district maintenance staff.

Head Injury Prevention In an effort to manage student-athlete injuries, the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District will be implementing the ImPACT test and ImPACT Concussion Management Model. ImPACT (Immediate PostConcussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is a computerized concussion management tool that utilizes a neurocognitive baseline and post-injury concussion testing to educate athletic directors, trainers, coaches, physical education instructors and school nurses on concussion management. “Training will focus on concussion awareness, recognition and response,” explained Eric Caballero,
director of physical education, athletics, driver education and health. “This will aid in addressing the need for an accurate, medically accepted assessment system as part of an overall concussion management protocol.” This tool is being offered as a free program through the New York Schools Insurance Reciprocal to support the Head Injury Prevention Program. “Baseline cognitive testing will be conducted every two years to evaluate student athletes who compete in 12 varsity and junior varsity contact sports,” said Superintendent of Schools John DeTommaso. “Postconcussion testing is also
provided under this free program.” It includes cognitive baseline and post-concussion testing of student athletes, educational seminars in head injury identification, educational seminars in controlling athletic risk management exposures and information gathering on the composition of athletic surfaces for further research. ImPACT is the first and only concussion-specific solution to be granted medical device clearance by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. “Providing this type of training and testing helps protect our students and create a safer athletic environment,” added DeTommaso.
Off to a New Start Levittown School District students received a warm welcome from administrators and faculty as they disembarked from buses and carpools for the start of the 2016-2017 school year. With their backpacks and school supplies in tow, the district’s 7,300 students entered their new classrooms eager to learn,
and instruction began immediately. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald reported that the school year started smoothly. “It was gratifying to see the hard work put into our buildings during the summer by the buildings and grounds staff,“ she said. “My favorite observation
was watching students from every grade level, supplies and backpacks in hand, eagerly greeting teachers, administrators and staff with big smiles and motivated to start the school year. It was a great day to be superintendent of the Levittown School District.”

The new school year is off to a fresh start in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District as students entered into updated buildings courtesy of numerous capital improvements made throughout the summer. “The kids are in, they’re healthy, happy, safe and most importantly – they’re learning,” said Jon Simpkins, director of School Facilities & Operations. At Sanford H. Calhoun High School, the refurbishment of science labs includes a flat panel screen for interactive lessons. “The new technology turns this unit into a college level lab,” said teacher Kim Lascarides. At Grand Avenue Middle School, a new roof, new bathrooms and central heat/air were installed over the summer, as well as a makeover to the guidance suite. “We worked tirelessly as a district to get things spiffed up for the start of the school year,” explained Principal Carlo Conte.
