Bellmore-Merrick Begins The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District opened yet another successful first school year on September 5th. Administrators and teachers at both Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools welcomed eager seventhgraders; they guided the fresh faces through the halls, assisted with locker routines and helped read class schedules. Prior to the first day, Grand Avenue Principal Carlo Conte said teachers
were in the building for meetings and classroom preparation. “Between the thought of a new year and all of the building updates – including a new library, there is a feeling of electricity that seems to be permeating the air,” he added. At John F. Kennedy, Sanford H. Calhoun and Wellington C. Mepham high schools, teachers and staff welcomed back upperclassmen, as well as ensured a smooth
transition for freshmen students. “We had our ninth-grade orientation last week and it was great to see our Class of 2021,” said Calhoun Principal Nicole Hollings. Students rotated among five stations around the building, acclimating themselves to the building protocols.” At Mepham, new Principal Eric Gomez said incoming freshmen “learned more about Mepham, our expectations and toured the building.”
The Levittown School District is pleased to announce the appointment of MacArthur High School Assistant Principal Anthony Allison, effective August 23rd. Mr. Allison, a North Bellmore resident, formerly held the position
of assistant principal at Seaford High School in the Seaford Union Free School District for the past five years. Prior to his role in Seaford, he worked for 15 years at Christ the King Regional High School, where he served as a math teacher and then an
assistant principal. During his undergraduate career at Marist College, Mr. Allison received his bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in human resources and personnel administration. He also holds a master’s degree in adolescent educationmathematics from St. John’s University and received his administrative licensing at the College of Saint Rose. “I’m very excited to join such a large district,” said Mr. Allison. “Having worked and gone to a school that was almost 2,000 students, it’s good to be home in a very large district that offers their students and staff such great opportunities.” Photo courtesy of: Levittown School District
Building on Success A spirit of renewal filled the air at Wantagh High School as new Superintendent of Schools John McNamara greeted teachers and support staff on August 31st. McNamara called on staff to participate in focus groups and surveys in the coming months to collect feedback and data toward creating a shared vision to build on the district’s successes. “One of the questions that we all must work to determine is what are the skills that we collectively agree are the most critical skills that all students need when they leave us,” said McNamara, citing data that finds 85 percent of jobs that will exist in 2030 don’t presently exist. Board of Education President Kera McLoughlin, who noted that the first day of school has always felt to her like New Year’s Day, talked about the challenges
teachers face in developing a love of learning in students. “There are no easy answers, but we know that when you come in every day, committed to doing what is best for kids, providing a nurturing environment while building a culture of high expectations for students of all abilities and talents, we are well on our way to making this year a great one for all of the Wantagh community,” said McLoughlin, who was elected to her second term on the board in May. Dr. Marc Ferris, who has replaced McNamara as assistant superintendent of instruction, welcomed 12 new teachers and other staff to the district. “If I can give any advice to the new teachers as you start your careers, everything you do matters,” Ferris said. “When you care, when you show empathy, when you reach out with a kind hand,
when you collaborate with your colleagues, you model that and you put great citizens into the world.” High School Assistant Principal Jim Brown delivered some levity, describing how he installed a new synthetic front lawn at his home this summer to the laughs of the crowd, then segued into talking about planting seeds as a metaphor for education and cultivating values such as kindness, collaboration and creativity. “Each one of us has the opportunity to do the small things, the ones that show our values to our students, small actions perhaps as small as a seed, but seeds that will bear fruit for harvest 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 years from today,” Brown said. Following the assembly, teachers visited their classrooms at the district’s schools, in part to prepare for the first day of class on September 5th.

When the planes hit and lives were lost, it was a shot through the heart, But patriotism took control and everyone did their part. It seemed like a horrible movie, all the fire, dust and smoke, It was reality just the same, when America began to hope. Innocent passengers and heroic firefighters lost their lives, Women lost their husbands and grown men lost their wives.

Students bounded off school buses and into the building at Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center School in the Bellmore School District to kick off the new school year. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo and Principal Patricia Castine were the first of many smiling faces greeting students on
September 5th. This year marks the first of the district’s newly offered full-day prekindergarten program. These young rising stars were given special treatment as they entered through colored doors in the rear of the building. “The Bellmore prekindergarten is a great addition to our highly regarded Early Childhood
Center,” wrote Dr. Famularo in a welcome letter to parents/guardians. “This year promises to be filled with fun and exciting educational experiences that will provide an important foundation for learning. Emphasis will be on the development of cognitive, literacy, socialemotional, and fine and gross motor skills.”

Ringing in the Year New Year’s Eve came four months early in the North Bellmore School District as administrators, teachers and staff celebrated the start of the 2017-2018 school year with great fanfare. The all-purpose room was filled to capacity at Saw Mill Road Elementary School for Superintendent’s Conference Day on August 31st, just days before students were set to arrive. The hundreds of administrators, teachers and support staff members in attendance donned party hats and used noisemakers to ring in the new year.
Superintendent Marie Testa said she wanted to begin the year with a high-energy event to spark enthusiasm and renew everyone’s commitment to helping children learn and grow. She told her staff that the new year is a chance for a fresh start while bringing forward successful teaching strategies from the past, and also encouraged them to end each day by reflecting on the positive moments. “We want teachers to capture the moments that are magical with their students,” she said. “By pausing and reflecting
on their successes, they validate the meaningful nature of their work.” Teachers then moved to their respective buildings where they attended faculty meetings and had time to prepare their classrooms. A day earlier, they participated in professional development workshops in literacy and math. In his welcoming address, Anthony Russo, the district’s Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Administration, welcomed the new staff and thanked them for sharing their talents with the students of East Meadow. “We are confident that each of you will be a valuable contributor to the fine tradition of studentcentered education here in the East Meadow School District,” Russo said. Superintendent of
Schools Dr. Kenneth Card Jr. encouraged the new educators to make an impact in their students’ lives and heighten academic success. “You will become a valued part of our district vision to provide a quality education for all students,” he said. “We aim to do this by fostering a learning environment that inspires all students to use their given abilities to their highest potential.”

Energy and enthusiasm filled the North Bellmore School District’s five elementary schools on September 5th as students and staff returned from their summer vacations ready to begin the 20172018 school year. Nearly 2,100 students walked through the doors for the first day of school including approximately 300 kindergartners. With a thirst for knowledge, they quickly sorted their new school supplies and were ready to learn. Sixth-graders in Matthew Puerta’s class at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School talked about the field trips they will be going on this year including to Project Adventure, Caumsett State Park and their future middle school
and high school. They also said they are looking forward to participating in more challenging STEAM activities such as building rockets, and serving as role models for the younger students. Downstairs, art teacher Jill Skelly welcomed students to the new art studio. While the space is the same, the philosophy will be different this year with more student-driven projects. Children will learn art skills and techniques while experiencing the use of different materials in five centers - drawing, painting, collage, fiber art and inventor’s workshop. “They will come up with their own ideas about what they want to make,” Ms. Skelly said, saying that the new structure is
about teaching children to become problem solvers. Superintendent Marie Testa said the administration, board of education, teachers and support staff are marking the new year in the spirit of “shoshin” - an attitude of openness and eagerness. At Saw Mill Road Elementary School, firstgrade teacher Melissa McCabe was ready to embrace that belief. She greeted her new students and reminded them to “tackle each day with a smile.” “I like that there’s a fresh start for everyone,” she said. “This year, I want my students to learn and have fun, to build confidence and independence, and to learn to love themselves no matter what.”

New faculty received a warm welcome from the Levittown School District’s administration and Board of Education during New Teacher Orientation on August 30th, which was held at the Levittown Memorial Education Center. The two-day orientation program allowed the new faculty members to get acquainted with the district and their fellow educators. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Debbie Rifkin and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Todd Winch were welcomed faculty and
congratulated them on their new positions. Board President Peggy Marenghi, Vice President Marianne Adrian and trustee Dillon Cain also greeted new faculty. In addition, the new faculty members were introduced to union leaders, Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance William Pastore and Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Services Dr. Donald Sturz. Mr. Winch conducted a special workshop for the new faculty to expand on teaching and learning in the district and included a unique balloon challenge based on expectations.
“It is very critical for everyone to know what the expectations are,” he said. “This means your students, parents and the district’s expectations of you. You really have to make sure you are clear and work your hardest to provide the best support on a day-to-day basis.” Other workshops included learning more about policy, districtwide technology, benefits, setting up a classroom and evaluation procedures. At the end of the orientation, new faculty members set up their classrooms and took a bus tour of the district.

In preparation for the 2017-2018 school year, Levittown’s incoming sixth-graders gathered for orientation assemblies at Jonas E. Salk and Wisdom Lane middle schools on Aug. 30. The assemblies allowed the students to learn more about their new building and the policies and procedures before the first day of school on September 6th. Jonas Salk Middle School Principal John Zampaglione and Assistant
Principal Patrick Mulligan spoke to the new students about the first day of school and eighth-grade students in the school’s junior leaders program assisted their incoming peers with opening their locks, many for the first time. At the end of the program, students were taken on a tour of the building, where they located their lockers and classrooms. Wisdom Lane sixthgraders attended orientation with their
parents, who were greeted by Principal John Avena, Assistant Principal Craig Arvelo-Shaw and other members of the administration and faculty. They learned about what to expect, key policies and classroom transitions. After the assembly, students were invited to walk the halls with their families to find their homerooms and practice opening their lockers. Full of Life The hallways and classrooms of the Wantagh School District’s five buildings were full of activity again as the 20172018 school year began on September 5th. The 2,846 students, including approximately 180 new kindergartners, arrived on the first day ready to pursue knowledge and explore their interests. This year, they will be able to do that through enhanced academic offerings including an expanded elementary school STEAM program, Chromebooks for all
middle school students, new course offerings in technology, art and research at the high school, and a new music lab in the secondary complex. “I’m glad to be back. I missed my friends and my teachers,” said Wantagh Middle School seventhgrader Noah Adelsberg, who is looking forward to his honors math and science classes, and to improving his Spanish language skills. Eighth-grader Alexa Cardone said she wants to do well this year to set herself up for success in
high school. She is excited for her digital arts class and to participate on the cheerleading and lacrosse teams. “It is fantastic to see our halls come to life as the students returned to school,” said Superintendent John McNamara. “This promises to be an outstanding year for our students with new course offerings and updated facilities. Calling All Artists AARP Long Island has teamed with the Long Island Arts Alliance (LIAA) and Bloomingdale’s Furniture Gallery in Roosevelt Field Mall to host the first-ever Art@50+ art exhibit. Entries are now open for aspiring Long Island artists 50 and older to submit their works for consideration. The exhibit, which will open at Bloomingdale’s on November 15, will showcase talented artists—from beginners to experts—based on Long Island and 50 years of age or older. In celebration of National Family Caregivers Month in November, and in recognition of the contribution family caregivers make to their loved ones and their communities, the exhibit will feature a theme of caregiving. “Like art, caring for a loved one is a deeply personal experience,” said Bernard Macias, AARP Associate State Director
for Long Island. “We hope this exhibit serves as an opportunity for 50-plus Long Islanders to express those emotions on paper or canvas. We’re excited to see the results.” “Our partnership with Bloomingdale’s allows us to offer free gallery space to Long Island artists through exiting exhibits such as Art@50+. When AARP Long Island suggested this celebration of caregiving, we knew this exhibit would touch a chord in all our hearts,” said LIAA Executive Director, Theresa StatzSmith. Each artist is permitted to submit up to 10 pieces of two-dimensional artwork - such as photographs, paintings and drawings - along with an artist biography and photo. The artwork can range from contemporary to abstract and black-and-white to color. All work must be framed and ready to hang securely on a wall and
though there are few size restrictions, no work can be larger than 10’ x 10’. The deadline for submissions is September 30th, 2017. The $25 application fee will be waived for AARP members. A panel of professional artists will review the applications and select the winners, who will then display the selected works in gallery. One winner will be featured as November’s “Artist of the Month” at artsaliveli.org. Winners, their families and their guests will be invited to a free artists reception on November 15 at 6 p.m. to celebrate the opening of the exhibit, which will take place at Bloomingdale’s Furniture Gallery in the Roosevelt Field Mall at 630 Old Country Road in Garden City. LOCAL TEENS COLLECT - Teens from The Chai Center’s CTeen chapter in Dix Hills (CTEEN West Suffolk County) packed toys, food, cleaning products, baby essentials and school supplies collected for victims of Hurricane Harvey. More than 60 boxes of supplies were sent to the Houston CTeen chapter to be distributed to those in need. still resonates with a certain degree of excitement. First days, new supplies in hand, a fashionable outfit all picked out the night before… just seeing snapshots of my friends’ children brings back a flood of memories from when I was a child, excitedly comparing schedules with my own classmates, mapping out what routes to take to class, planning who to eat lunch with the important things. How much has changed in the decades since. I know plenty of us would be thrilled to return to those simpler times, to when our biggest concern was having pool first period, or how to manage to squeeze in a stop at our lockers in between each class so as not to have to lug piles of books around the entire day. Even the workload seems trivial by comparison. We were competing for grades; but really, the entire structure was but a microcosm of the stresses of
younger; no one can possibly offer us any insight that doesn’t match our own. We skate from one year to the next, until we eventually have to decide what to do with the rest of our lives. And even then, we have that cushion of college, the ultimate in years spent “finding” yourself. And really, all these years later, has any of us truly found what we thought we were looking for back then? I recall one teacher in high school who constantly warned us that, as many “friends” as we had collected through those formative years, there would come a day when less than a handful would remain. “Two, maybe three, tops,” he would say. “Just you wait and see.” Impossible, we all scoffed, as we remained confident that all those whom we spent the majority of classes and extracurricular activities with would always be by our side.
and even beyond. But, with each passing year, the list grew smaller. This is not to say that we would be incapable of picking up where we left off on any given day; but it’s not the same. Gone are the days of constantly talking on the phone, making plans to catch up, replaced instead by an occasional text message, a vague reference to “grabbing dinner” one of these days - and there it generally remains. If anything, this realization only confirms that I should have fully appreciated those school days as they were unfolding. How young and innocent we were, how little we knew of what was to come in the years that have since elapsed… how precious that time truly was. Here’s to all those students living those years as we speak. May they always appreciate them the way I have now learned to in hindsight.

Literature was brought to life during the Levitttown School District’s Summer Reading Program on August 29th. Incoming fifth-graders from East Broadway, Gardiners and Lee Road Elementary schools arrived at the Levittown Public Library to take on an exciting challenge based on the book “Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library,” by Chris Grabenstein. The community-wide summer reading project allowed incoming fifthgraders from all six elementary schools to take part and attend book discussions during the month of August. Students from Northside,
Abbey Lane and Summit Lane Elementary schools participated in the same activity on August 17th. Under the direction of Director of ELA Kerin Slattery, students worked in small groups to solve different puzzles to lead them to the lock box. Their goal was to open the lock box which held a key to escape the library, just like in their book. Incoming high school seniors from the National Honor Society volunteered with the students during every book discussion and helped each group with solving their puzzles. Refreshments and snacks were served and every student added their
name to a raffle. Once all the groups completed the challenge and obtained their key to escape, the raffle winners were announced. Winners included Gardiner Elementary student Juliana Stone and East Broadway students Andew Greco and Brooklyn Sinodinos. The three lucky students received a goodie bag with candy and a gift card to Calda. “We want to create a culture for love of learning,” said Ms. Slattery. “They read the same book so they all have something to talk about and have a shared experience in literature.”

Regionals to be Held at Hofstra Following the largestever SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST® Robotics Competition, SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) is pleased to announce that the organization will now host two regional events in the 2017-2018 season. Planned as a double header, these backto-back regionals will be held April 9th to 11th and April 12th to 14th, 2018 at Hofstra University’s David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Each event will serve as
a separate regional, with different teams competing in separate alliances and tournament rounds. Now in its 19th season, the SBPLI Long Island Regional features teams of high school-aged students from across Long Island, the New York metropolitan area and even around the world competing in a cooperative tournamentstyle robotics competition. Guided by their mentors, students rely on their skills in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to compete
for honors and recognition that reward design excellence, competitive play and sportsmanship. This high-energy event further emphasizes the importance of highimpact partnerships between students, universities, businesses and communities. “We are incredibly excited to be opening up a second regional tournament, which we are certain will provide an even greater level of exhilaration for teams across the region,” says Bertram
Dittmar, Executive Director, SBPLI/FIRST Long Island. “With an increasing number of Long Island FIRST Robotics Competition teams joining each year, and more teams from outside the area wanting to compete, the need for an additional local tournament became very evident. Now, we’ll be able to accommodate an even larger number of teams and face-offs.” “The SBPLI Long Island Regional is an amazing way for students to showcase their talents
