Making the Shift “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step.” – Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Once upon a time I believed “circumstances” was a dirty word, and for one to allow themselves to be carried by outside circumstances was akin to falling short of personal resolve. Through the gift of time and perspective, “I Can See Clearly Now,” as the late Dr. Wayne Dyer famously titled one of his forty best-selling books. We may find ourselves in a situation where it becomes impossible to remain in comfortable familiarity. The universe not-so-subtly nudges us in a different direction. This new and unfamiliar path could be related to finances, health, relationship, profession or geographical location. There is a divine wisdom and design to this universe; it’s the same wisdom that created you. Sometimes it’s okay to let it take the wheel and go along for the ride. Four weeks ago, I was sitting under two gently swaying palm trees on my Florida patio,
overlooking a crystal-clear blue lake and watching a family of ducks congregating on the grass in my yard before toddling into the water for their afternoon swim. A moment later, I received a call that would change the direction of my life. I was offered the job of Managing Editor for South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers, in my native, Long Island, New York. After enthusiastically accepting the job and hanging up the phone, the reality set in that I would have to break the news to my son that we were relocating back to New York. We’d be leaving our Florida home, his school, and packing up our belongings to report to this new job in less than a week. The enormity of it all had me suddenly frozen. After sorting through the emotional and logistical details, I reminded myself of the very spiritual principals I’d been studying for a decade. In my book, Journaling Fame: a memoir of a life unhinged and on the record, and in my speaking engagements, the biggest takeaway I offer is that for a human life to be happy, healthy and whole, you must
believe in something greater than yourself. I don’t care what you choose to call it. If you make the shift to knowing that you are here to both learn and teach; and that your life is being orchestrated in creative collaboration with something greater, you will begin to experience the magic of life. I took a deep breath (or two!) and embraced this new adventure. I suddenly found the clarity to make the move as seamless and positive an experience as I could for me and my son. Shortly after arriving at the South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers office on a Tuesday morning, I was greeted by my predecessor, Jamie Lynn Ryan. Jamie spent the next nine days generously training me to take the baton. At Jamie’s farewell celebration just before the start of Labor Day Weekend, I was moved by the impact she has had on the rest of the staff, and on the newspapers’ readership. I have large shoes to fill, but I am excited to see what’s in store, and my hope is to be of service to you, the reader, in your pursuit of Living Well!

Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. Staff and faculty from the Bethpage School District kicked off the 2018-19 school year with the annual Superintendent’s Conference Day, for which they gathered in the high school’s auditorium on Sept. 4. F i r s t - y e a r Superintendent of Schools David Schneider began on a light note by asking the teachers to pick a photo on their phone and share a story about it with a nearby staff member. The room erupted into chatter and laughter as the teachers swapped summer stories and learned more about their colleagues.
Congratulations were extended to those who celebrated marriages, children and retirements, while the new teachers and administrators in attendance were acknowledged. Schneider moved matters to updated school safety and security practices the district is undertaking. With regard to curriculum, a mentalhealth component will be added to all health classes in grades 6 through 10. The district also added a school psychologist in order to provide the support students may need. “We want kids to have
emotional and social success as well as academic success,” Schneider noted. Schneider also challenged the teachers to continue to grow and learn themselves. He asked them, “What are you going to do this year to take ownership of your own journey? What do you want to learn? And also what do you need to learn? That’s what being a professional is and that’s what we have in this room.” The superintendent concluded the day by encouraging the teachers to take chances and expressed enthusiasm for a great school year.
Wantagh Students Back to School The excessive heat did not wilt the spirits of Wantagh students who toted their backpacks full of school supplies to start the 2018-19 school year on Sept. 4. Members of the board of education, Superintendent of Schools John C. McNamara, Assistant Superintendent for
Instruction Dr. Marc Ferris and Assistant Superintendent for Business Adriana Silver joined the principals to welcome students as they disembarked from the bright yellow buses or arrived by carpools, ready to find their classrooms and get down to work. Mr. McNamara said
he was pleased with the district’s smooth opening. “The teachers and students were enthusiastic and instruction began immediately,” he said. “I am confident that this will be a productive and positive school year for all Wantagh students.”

Nassau BOCES Programs Nassau BOCES partnered with Hofstra University’s Continuing Education program, as well as the college’s Summer Camp program, to offer a variety of exciting and fun educational opportunities for young people this summer. Programs were offered to students entering grades 6-11, and provided experiences in career exploration, arts, sciences, outdoor education and more. Through two featured programs this year, Nassau BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education enabled campers to discover the unique habitats of Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve and the Brookville Outdoor Education. “A Field Study in Marine Biology” gave campers a chance to become Marine Biologists in training. In “STEM (Science, Technology,
Engineering, Math) Marine Exploration Technology,” teams of campers built an underwater ROV (Remotely Operated Vehicle). Other programs offered by Nassau BOCES and Hofstra Summer Camps covered a variety of topics including Aviation, Construction Trades, Culinary Arts, Graphic Design and Veterinary Medicine. Some programs were offered at three separate levels — Introductory, Intermediate and Advanced. Programs run in different locations, such as Nassau BOCES state-of-the-art Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center in Westbury, Caumsett State Historic Park in Lloyd Harbor and the Nassau BOCES Brookville Environmental Education Center in Brookville. Nassau BOCES offers state-of-the-art programs
for learners of all ages and abilities, as well as cost-effective services for school districts and municipalities. BOCES empowers students to achieve their maximum potential in alternative, artistic, outdoor, special education, virtual, and career and technical environments. The program also offers adult education and a variety of programs that are vital to improving the Long Island regional economy. BOCES technology services form the backbone of many school districts’ infrastructure. BOCES Naturalist Visits Hawai’i
Nassau BOCES naturalist Sharon Kennelty-Cohen traveled to Hawai’i this summer to pursue an Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP) master’s degree from Miami University’s Project Dragonfly. KenneltyCohen studied what it takes to save species in the wild. She engaged with local partners to develop and test site-specific methods of community engagement to sustain ecological and social health. While in Hawai’i, Kennelty-Cohen learned how to restore local plant communities and rescue species from extinction. Specifically she worked on helping to save the Hawaiian crow and other native forest birds. “My experience ‘Saving Species’ in the Hakalau Forest National Preserve on Mauna Kea on the Big Island of Hawai’i directed my appreciation of native plants and animals that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Since we are
also an island ecosystem, the comparisons to Hawai’i came easily. The natural threats may be somewhat different, we don’t have volcanos and they don’t have ice storms, but the fragility of existence is the same,” exclaimed Kennelty-Cohen. “This program and the experience of studying in the field will help Sharon in her role as a naturalist with Nassau BOCES,” said Carolann James, Program Coordinator, Nassau BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education. Kennelty-Cohen, a Long Beach resident, has been a naturalist with the Nassau BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education program since 1996. Her years of experience leading and teaching students through outdoor learning will be enhanced by this real-world higher education program. Project Dragonfly, housed at Miami University, Ohio, promotes inquiry-
driven reform through the use of exhibits, education programs and the media. Students have traveled all over the world to study sustainable approaches to human wildlife coexistence. The Advance Inquiry Program offers face-to-face experiential learning and the chance to share ideas with peers and faculty nationwide. Outdoor and Environmental Education experiences take place in a variety of outdoor settings throughout Long Island and New York State. They are closely coordinated with school curriculum, 21st Century Skills, NYS Learning Standards, Next Generation Science Standards and the Dignity for All Students Act. Emphasis is placed on firsthand, multidisciplinary experiences designed to develop sensitivity to the environment and a deeper understanding of curriculum introduced in the classroom.

Welcome to the District The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District began the process of the new school year on August 28th by welcoming students to orientations at all five schools. Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue middle schools were eager to welcome seventh-graders as administrators and eighth-grade students guided the new students through the hallways. P r i n c i p a l s , administrators and staff members assisted seventh-graders with
locker combinations and class schedules. Students went through a modified class schedule to find each classroom before attempting to open their lockers. Recently graduated eighth-graders from Grand Avenue and Merrick Avenue were among the freshmen at orientation at John F. Kennedy, Sanford H. Calhoun and Wellington C. Mepham high schools. At Mepham, the ninthgrade class was broken into a pair of sessions where students met
administrators before being led on a tour of the school by junior and senior class leaders. Principal Eric Gomez, now in his second year at Mepham, encouraged students to embrace “Pirate Pride” by joining extracurricular activities and attending the numerous events offered throughout the year. The Wantagh school district is pleased to announce the appointment of four new administrators for the start of the 20182019 school year. Ryan Aliperti (pictured above) has been appointed Humanities/Literacy K-5 director. Aliperti was previously an elementary school assistant principal in Massapequa Public Schools and has extensive experience as a literacy coach with Always Learning, LLC/Eastern Suffolk BOCES. a master’s degree in childhood education from St. John’s University and a certification in educational leadership from Stony Brook University. Tobias Daempfle left retirement to serve as the district’s interim science/ technology education director. He previously served as k-12 science director and as science coordinator (pre-K-12) in the West Hempstead Union Free School District. Daempfle holds a bachelor’s degree in biology and a professional diploma in administration and supervision from Queens College, as well as a master’s degree in education from St. John’s University. Hired with the task of managing the district’s facilities and transportation services is Director of Facilities and Transportation Thomas Fucci. He most recently served as director of facilities in the Freeport Union Free School District
and formerly as assistant director of facilities and operations in the Jericho Union Free School District. In line with the district’s expansion of the science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics program, Scott Jackson has been appointed STEAM K-5 director. Jackson began his career in the Merrick Union Free School District in 2003 and has most recently served as assistant principal at Chatterton Elementary School. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in elementary education from Hofstra University, as well as advanced certification in educational leadership from Stony Brook University. everyone that came out and donated to our blood drive. Events like these have a great purpose but also allow the community to come together and give back to one another,” McDonough said. “Our local hospitals and blood banks are at an extreme deficit this time
of year and every donation gives them the resources they need to help patients and victims. Remember, there are always opportunities to be a silent hero and donate blood year round. In doing so, you could be saving the life of a loved one, neighbor, family member or friend.”

Marching Madness at MacArthur Marching band students from General Douglas MacArthur High School lined the football field of the school at the end of August for the high school’s annual “Marching Madness” program. With the guidance of band director Joseph Romano, the students participated in four, seven-hour rehearsals, where they learned choreography, marching maneuvers and the music that will be performed in this year’s homecoming half-time show production entitled, “Heavy Metal Marching Band.” The show features a variety of selections
including an arrangement of the AC/DC classic, “Back In Black,” and the godfather of all heavy metal tunes, “In-A-Gadda-DaVida,” by Iron Butterfly. On the last day of the program, students participated in the annual MacArthur High School Marching Band “Drill Down” competition. Students competed against one another in challenges that demonstrated their skills in marching technique. This year’s competition ended with co-champions; junior, Krystal Aguinaga and sophomore, Emily Zhang. The success of the program was due in large
part to the exceptional leadership shown by the MacArthur Marching Band’s Drum Majors and Captains. Grace Derrick, Kimberly Mestizo and Brianna Moss are the band’s Drum Majors. Paul Giorlando, Julia Gizzo and Joseph Novello are Associate Drum Majors. The Color Guard is led by Captains Kaylee Boerner, Courtney Hakim and Antonia Iovine. The MacArthur Marching Band’s first half time show performance of the season will take place at MacArthur High School’s first home football game on Friday night, September 14th.

Westbury Burt Reynolds Tribute
Thousands of New York fans will pay their respects to the Smokey and the Bandit star, Burt Reynolds, later this month at Long Island’s largest car show with a “100-Trans Am Salute,” with a ceremonial parade of over 100 classic Pontiac Firebird Trans Ams in procession at Eisenhower Park. The memorial will pay homage to the iconic movie star by showing the original two movies to be viewed by dozens of drivers dressed in character.
Reynolds, a former resident of New York, was invited to New York’s biggest car show by the organizers, however he passed away only a few weeks prior to the event. Burt Reynolds, an iconic movie star and celebrity icon, died tragically of cardiac arrest on Thursday, September 6, 2018, at the age of 82. Millions of Americans are mourning the legend through viewing his popular films, such as Smokey and the Bandit and Deliverance,
from the late 1970s and 1980s. Reynolds was viewed as a leading male sex symbol, appearing naked on a bearskin rug in Cosmopolitan Magazine in 1972. New York’s largest Burt Reynolds memorial tribute will take place on September 28th, and will welcome tens of thousands of Long Island fans to the event at Eisenhower Park, 1899 Park Boulevard, in Westbury.

Bellmore students disembarked from the iconic yellow buses toting backpacks and supplies, prepared and excited to start the 2018-2019 school year on September 4th. Students enrolled in the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center, Winthrop Avenue School and Shore Road School received a warm welcome from board of education trustees, administrators and faculty as they walked single-file to their classrooms. The students
became acquainted with former classmates and made new friends right before the immediate start of instruction. At Reinhard, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph A. Famularo and Principal Patricia Castine welcomed the district’s youngest students at the bus circle. Dr. Famularo said he was not only impressed with the district’s smooth opening, but the way in which the teachers and students were prepared to begin
instruction. He also said the district will continue its emphasis on promoting core values and leadership principals, which are incorporated into its nationally recognized Bellmore Stars Character Development Program. “I look forward to continuing to build upon our unique ‘Community of Learners’ and providing opportunities for our students to ‘Lead and Learn’ as they become SUPERINTENDENT AND STUDENTS- Bellmore Superintendent of Schools Dr. productive global citizens,” Joseph A.
