The World Trade Center spanned 16 acres and opened to the public on April 4, 1973. Including the two towers that fell, World Trade Center Building 7 and many other surrounding businesses were ultimately demolished. While 2,977 people perished in the 2001 attack, many find it miraculous that so many others were able to evacuate and escape death. After the iconic towers fell, thoughts turned to the best ways to commemorate the memories of the people lost on 9/11, as well as the heroism that took place on that fateful September day. Out of the rubble came The National September 11 Memorial and Museum. Millions of people have visited the memorial, which opened to the public on September 12, 2011, and the museum, which opened on May 21, 2014. Many tourists make it a point to visit the National September 11 Memorial and Museum when traveling to New York City. The memorial portion was the first to open and includes twin reflecting pools that are each nearly an acre in size and feature the largest manmade waterfalls in North America. The pools sit within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood. In the memorial plaza, visitors will find trees harvested from locations within a 500-mile radius of the WTC site, and additional trees coming from locations in Pennsylvania and Maryland. Visitors will also see the “Survivor Tree,” which was recovered from the rubble at the World Trade Center site in October 2001. According to The National September 11 Memorial and Museum Foundation, the museum serves as the country’s principal instiution concerned with exploring the implications of the events of 9/11, documenting the impact of those events and exploring the continuing significance of September 11. The underground museum has many different artifacts from 9/11, including steel from the Twin Towers, fire trucks and debris. It houses 110,000 square feet of exhibition space and has multimedia displays, monumental collections, archives, and stories about the men, women and children who died during the attacks. The National September 11 Memorial and Museum archives the story of destruction that occured, but also represents the hope and camaraderie that the attacks spawned.

The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight Wish celebrations. Since the Foundation’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. S o m e t i m e s a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values and respects our senior population. You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross-country in a tractor-trailer truck. One of their wish recipient’s life was changed after he wished for a mobility scooter. He is from Scranton, PA and wanted this scooter so he can continue to assist others at an art center located across the street from his residence. Long Island’s Chapter Director James Ciervo and his colleague Joann Petrie drove to PA to pick up a very gently used scooter, updated it a bit and delivered

Reinhard Early Childhood Center, Winthrop Avenue and Shore Road schools disembarked from the bright yellow school buses, toting their school supplies and ready and excited to start the 2019-2020 school year. The students received a warm welcome from board of education

trustees, administrators and faculty as they walked single-file to their classrooms on Sept. 3. Not only did instruction start immediately, the students became acquainted with former classmates and made new friends. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo said he was not only impressed with the district’s smooth opening,

but the way in which the teachers and students were prepared to begin instruction. He also said the district will continue its emphasis on promoting core values and leadership principles, which are incorporated into its nationally recognized Bellmore Stars Character Development Program. “The Board of Education and Central Administration

Excitement was palpable as Bellmore School District’s faculty and staff gathered in the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center auditorium on Aug. 28 for Superintendent’s Conference Day. In addition to introducing new staff and thanking the maintenance team for preparing the schools to pristine condition, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Joseph Famularo set the tone and theme for the 2019-2020 school year. In a rhetorical question, Dr. Famularo asked the faculty how the district has control over their actions

and reactions to the outward world. He noted that doing what is best for the district’s students can be accomplished only if everyone has a common vision, mission, core values and leadership principals. “We must continually be reminded and make sure our decisions and actions are aligned to them,” he said. “Bellmore is a very unique and outstanding district for your leadership and learning where everyone is on the same page.” Board of Education President Janet Goller noted that the district

The newest staff members to join the Levittown Public Schools attended the district’s two-day New Teacher Orientation program on Aug. 26 and 27. Held at Levittown Memorial Education Center, the program provided a smooth transition for new

staff to get acquainted with the district and meet their fellow educators. During the course of the two days, the new faculty were warmly greeted by the district’s central administration and board of education. They learned about the district’s policies, procedures, payroll,

instructional technology, New Teacher Induction Program and more. To conclude the orientation program, the new faculty enjoyed a luncheon together in the district’s Outdoor Learning Center and took a bus tour of the district.

Students Head Back To School Administrators, teachers and staff members from the Levittown Public Schools greeted students back with open arms on the first day of school on Sept. 4. Students across the district in grades K-12 met their new teachers and peers, got acclimated to their new classrooms and for some, their new school buildings. At the elementary level, the students unpacked their supplies, while

middle and high school students memorized their new schedules and adjusted to a new routine. Students and staff throughout the district also received a warm welcome back with special visits from Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Todd Winch, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Debbie Rifkin and Assistant Superintendent for

Business Dr. Christopher Dillon. “It was so wonderful to welcome our students and teachers back to school,” said Dr. McDonald. “We spent the day touring all of our buildings and loved every minute of it. I am so happy that when our students were asked, ‘Are you happy to be back at school?’ the overwhelming response was an enthusiastic ‘YES!’”
