When Worlds Collide By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the fall season tends to come an avalanche of entertainment. You have the intersection of football and baseball, new television season premieres and lots of movie and music releases to contend with, making your recreational choices far more interesting for the first time in months. What to watch, what to do…so many decisions, but for a change, the fun, trivial kind. This collision of all things entertainment never really hit me before until I happened to be attending a New York Mets game on the

very same night as the U.S. Open was taking place next door. As both events let out at seemingly the exact same instant, the rush of people streaming into one another (literally) was quite an experience, with those from Citi Field heading to the train platform and those from the Tennis Center making their way to the subways down below. It was an interesting contrast – quite the range of diversity on that boardwalk in that moment… people from all walks of life mingling after a night of taking in some of the finest local athletes (well, at the Tennis Center

anyway!). So typically…I guess New Yorkish is the best way to describe the scene. Add to that the ushering in of the autumn season, everyone being back to school, shaking off the last remnants of summer…it brought a unique sense of excitement to the air. Transitions are never easy, whether in weather or in life, but – in both instances – they simply must be dealt with. Like with most things beyond our control, they are better off embraced than shunned. So welcome autumn with open arms – it’s coming whether you like it or not.

Faculty Orientation The administration and Board of Education of the Wantagh Union Free School District welcomed 15 new teachers to the district for the 2013-2014 school year. These talented new staff members were required to report to the administrative offices for a weeklong orientation program that began August 26th. “After a rigorous interview and selection process, we are pleased to welcome these new teachers to our school district and community,” said Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg. After being introduced to the administration and staff, the new teachers were paired with mentors and received an overview of the district’s technology program from Penny Curry, the director of information systems and instructional technology. District administrators and directors also provided information on classroom preparation, instructional initiatives and pedagogy, the district’s philosophy about special education, and the Annual Professional Performance Review and teacher evaluations. The orientation allowed for building meetings and

ample classroom preparation, as well as independent Elementary School work with the district’s directors. In addition, a bus tour Robin Conte – Kindergarten, Forest Lake Elementary of the community was held to better acquaint the new School staff with the community and the district. Wantagh High School’s incoming ninth-grade students received a warm welcome during the school’s annual orientation program, which included introductions to the administration and guidance counselors, words of wisdom from upperclassmen and an invitation to join the school’s various clubs. “Today, the building belongs to you,” Principal Carolyn Breivogel said as she welcomed the freshmen. In addition to providing general information about the high school, Ms. Breivogel dispensed three key pieces of advice for success: your diploma will follow you for the rest of your life, so make every day count;

protect your name because it is your most prized possession; and respect yourself enough to come to school appropriately dressed. Assistant Principal James E. Brown explained that high school students are held to new expectations. “You will be treated like a young adult,” he said. “If you are invested in activities, you will become a part of the fabric of the high school.” After briefing the ninthgraders on rules and regulations, Supervisor of Discipline Eric Haruthunian reminded the incoming class that learning and safety are the two most important goals. and student government representatives Arianna Caradonna and Avery Kratzer encouraged the new students to try out for sports and become involved in the school’s many clubs and organizations. After the guidance counselors distributed the class schedules, the students were invited to tour the building, find their classrooms and practice opening their lockers. A club fair was held in the courtyard so that the ninth-graders could explore opportunities to join organizations such as Mathletes, Model Congress, Theatre Club, Literacy Society and many more.

Liberty Medal Presented

Senator Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. and Assemblyman David G. McDonough recently presented the New York State Senate Liberty Medal to David Collins, an 12 year-old boy from North Bellmore, for heroically saving a young boy’s life. On June 29th, David was at a graduation party at a friend’s house swimming in the pool when he noticed another boy laying motionless at the bottom of the deep end. While other children in the pool thought the boy was playing, David immediately swam to the deep end, dove down ten feet to the pool bottom and pulled the boy up to the surface, at

which point he was lifeless. Adults performed CPR on the boy, who was taken to the hospital and released the next day. “David’s quick thinking helped save a life and prevent a tragedy. By acting immediately as soon as he thought something was wrong, David saved those precious few moments which often mean the difference between someone living or dying. He’s a true hero and it is my pleasure to present him with this much deserved honor,” said Senator Fuschillo. “It is an honor and privilege to present this Medal to David as his bravery was pinnacle in

saving the life of a young man. His quick thinking and ability to stay focused on the task at hand proved crucial in getting the help needed to prevent the disastrous loss of life,” said Assemblyman McDonough. The New York State Senate Liberty Medal is one of the highest civilian honors that a New Yorker can receive. Similar to the national Congressional Gold Medal, the award is given to individuals who have merited special commendation for exceptional, heroic or humanitarian acts and achievements on behalf of their fellow New Yorkers.

This year, remember the importance of your friends. In addition to being there for you now, they will be there for you later. Life is a game of networks, and your senior year of high school is certainly a suitable time to start.

The event provided an opportunity for students to become reacquainted with classmates and make new friends.

Smooth Opening For Wantagh Toting backpacks full of school supplies, Wantagh students disembarked from bright yellow buses and prepared to start the 20132014 school year. Members of the Board of Education joined Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr. Maureen Appiarius and each of the principals in greeting the excited students as they filed into their respective

buildings. “The facilities are in great shape, the students entered the classrooms with much enthusiasm and instruction began immediately,” Ms. Goldberg said. “Today’s smooth opening signified preparedness on behalf of the administration and staff, as well as the eagerness of our students.” The Wantagh School District also welcomed its youngest students to a full-

day kindergarten program. The kindergarteners were individually greeted at the door by their teachers to commence their official first day of school. Strong Island Face Off The women of the Strong Island Derby Revolution (SIDR) return home after more than four months of away bouts across the Northeast. On Saturday, September 28th, they will be face-off against their toughest opponent yet, the Corporal Punishers from the Jerzey Derby Brigade of Morristown, New Jersey. Spectators can expect a night of hard-hitting, fast paced action, with plenty of bumps and bruises between the teams. Raffles from local businesses, live entertainment and refreshments, provided by the Port Jefferson Brewing Company and Tag Beverage, will all be available at the bout.

SIDR returns to their home rink for the bout, World Gym Racquet & Sports Arena, which is located at 384 Mark Tree Road in East Setauket. Prior to the start of the 2013-2014 school year, the East Meadow School District held its annual new teacher orientation, during which administrators and staff welcomed 26 new teachers. Held at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center on August 28th, the orientation made for a positive and insightful forum where new staff could become acquainted with one another and meet administrators. New teachers were made familiar with district policies and procedures

and were also given an official tour of the district aboard a school bus. During his opening remarks, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Administration Anthony Russo noted how pleased district administrators were that the new teachers had selected East Meadow as the district where they could apply their talents. “We’re confident that each of you will be a valuable contributor to the fine tradition of studentcentered education in East Meadow,” he added.

Superintendent of Schools Louis R. DeAngelo encouraged the teachers to reach out for support when needed and wished them great success. “A teacher needs to have the uncanny ability to balance somewhat dichotomous purposes; it’s a position requiring toughness and tenderness, firmness and fairness, fortitude and gratitude, and passion and compassion,” he said. “We believe that the ability to achieve this balance is what makes a good teacher.”

Aneurysm Awareness Walk The Brain Aneurysm Center of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Cushing Neuroscience Institute (CNI), along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), will host Long Island’s 5th Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/Two-Mile Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 28th, to promote awareness and education. Proceeds from the walk will benefit CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center and the BAF to support essential research that may directly benefit those affected and help to reduce the incidence of ruptured aneurysms.

Hundreds of walkers, including brain aneurysm survivors and their family and friends, are expected to attend the fun-filled event. Many doctors, nurses and staff members from CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center will also be in attendance to show their support of the many patients they have treated over the years. Among those who will be attending are David Chalif, MD, and Avi Setton, MD, co-directors of CNI’s Brain Aneurysm Center. “One of the goals of this annual event is to increase awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm,” said Dr. Chalif. “The symptoms can

include severe headache, nausea, blurred or double vision, stiff neck or neck pain, pain above or behind the eye, and loss of sensation.” Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m.; at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5, 1000 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh. The start time is 10 a.m. and will be held rain or shine. The registration fee is $25 and includes the cost of parking and snacks. Teeshirts will be handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis. RAPID IMPROVEMENT - NuHealth celebrated its fifth month of rapid improvement events. In the Ambulatory Care Value Stream, the process of patient scheduling was re-designed for several specialty clinics. In the Revenue Cycle Value Stream, the emergency room medical chart process was streamlined. An additional LEAN core team event was a “6S Blitz” in the Department of Psychiatry; this is a methodology used to reorganize workspaces in order to improve efficiency, quality and safety.

I am a WWII veteran. In September, I will be 89 years-old. While I was hospitalized in Paris for battle fatigue and trench foot, after the battle of Metz, I wrote the following poem:

Twas a beautiful morning, the time was not late, On the eighth of September, a memorable date. As we walked down the road before the attack, I prayed to the Lord to please bring me back. Yes, I was afraid, so was every man there, as we talked, sang and prayed in the cool morning air. Below in the valley flowed the peaceful Moselle. It was hard to believe it would soon be a hell. We jumped in assault boats and paddled ahead. Many were hit with shrapnel and lead. We fought up a mountain, our objective was near, But then came a counter-attack from the rear. We had to fight back to a place near the river, Dig our positions, sit there and shiver. For three days and nights, we bravely fought back, And tried to repulse their counter-attack. At last came the orders for us to withdraw. We had lost many men and could fight no more. One thousand went over, two hundred came back. My prayers were answered, I survived the attack. After the war, I composed this poem:

Well here I am, a civilian at last, And ready to start life anew. An ex-GI with the war in the past, And target for the public to screw. I’ve been offered a job for ﬁfteen a week, But to me it didn’t sound right. Before I could open my mouth to speak, I was signed up to work day and night. Yes, vacations are out and you can’t get a raise. It’s a hell of a mess I declare. I wonder if accepting a discharge pays, Or should I have stayed over there. Yes, America is the land of plenty; Excuse me while I pick up that butt, Yes, America is the land of plenty, But they never say plenty of what!
