rior to the start of the 2014-2015 school year, the East Meadow School District held its annual new teacher orientation, during which administrators and staff welcomed 32 new teachers. New teachers were made familiar with district policies, procedures and expectations, and were also given an official tour of the district aboard a school bus. District Wide Orientation Eighth-grade volunteers dressed in orange shirts helped lead the incoming students through the process, taking them on a tour to their homeroom class and handing out their locker number and combination. Merrick Avenue Middle School (MAMS) held a similar orientation as its new principal Taryn Johnson greeted the seventhgrade class at the doors.
Homeroom teachers were also on hand at MAMS to field questions and help reassure nervous students. At Wellington C. Mepham High School, Principal Michael Harrington addressed the incoming freshman class of 2018, urging them to get involved in clubs and activities and

Back to school. Back to schedules. Back to routines. Back from vacation. Back to reality. And so it begins. That slow, tedious transition into all things Autumn. That gradual acceptance of pumpkin spice and flowering mums and long sleeves and boots, and the reluctant closing of pools and packing away of bathing suits and flip flops. Say it ain’t so. Ah, but here it is. May as well embrace it. And while you’re sitting on a
park bench enjoying the cool crisp air (shameless plug alert), take a look at our new Autumn issue of Seasons Magazine for a refresher course on all that Long Island has to offer, no matter the time of year. From long walks on the beach and picnics in the park to weekends at the wineries and pumpkin patches; from family days at Oktoberfest celebrations and Fall Festivals to “me” time alone on the couch vegging out to the new fall TV season, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy.
Oh, and we can’t forget football. Sundays monopolized by the schedule of the home teams (or the Patriots, as the case may be), spent tailgating and snacking, rooting and yelling… Sunday Funday at its best. Having a schedule dictated by the hours of daylight has its downfalls; but it does make you want to savor those final glimpses of summer sunshine all the more. Take a walk, watch a sunset, sip a cup of tea on the patio. Maybe just grab a jacket on the way out.

Levittown senior Jack Sawula, a choral student at MacArthur High School, has been selected to perform in the 2014 AllNational Music Ensemble Program in Nashville, Tenn. on October 29th. Sponsored by the National Association for Music Education, the AllNational Honor Ensemble Program represents the top performing high school musicians in the U.S. Ensembles in concert band, mixed choir, symphony orchestra and jazz ensemble will perform under the baton of leaders
in the field of music education. Sawula, a tenor, was an alternate in the New York State School Music Association’s 2014 Winter Conference at Rochester’s Eastman Theatre, as well as a participant in the Nassau Music Educators Association All-County Festivals at LIU Post’s Tilles Center. Sawula also has a penchant for theatre performance and recently played the role of the comedic Monsieur Thérnardier in the school’s production of Les Misérables, as well as other major roles in past school productions. In addition to his school music accomplishments, Sawula has performed in productions at the Bay Way Arts Center and Westbury’s NYCB Theater. In 2013, Sawula joined the ‘Kidz Theater’ in New York City where he has performed at The Connelly Theatre, West End Theatre and The

Principal Dawn Matrochano and Assistant Principal Dan Katchihtes were also available to answer questions and to help students with opening locks. “Orientation is a great opportunity to let the students, who come from all three elementary schools, become familiarize themselves with the school and become reacquainted with former classmates, as well as new students,” Matrochano said. After the students finished setting up their lockers and comparing their schedule with friends, they attended a delicious barbeque lunch.

The life well lived is one filled with experience. This experience cannot be wasted. In order to live a fully virtuous life, we must all give back to our community. Regardless of how fortunate or unfortunate we may be, a key trait of righteousness is a commitment to serve God’s creation. This idea, commonly known as stewardship, is the basis for a well lived life. I’m not a very religious person. I’ve gone to Catholic School my entire life, but I’ve also had Jewish and Episcopal influences throughout my childhood. Even if we don’t look at
stewardship from a religious perspective, most of us are hardwired to help out people in need. As a very fortunate person, I find it important to look out for those who are incapable of looking out for themselves. This does not mean acting like a superhero who swoops in to save the day. We can all make a difference on a much different scale. The main idea behind this article is not to convert people, but to serve as the kind of illustration that someone looking to live a full life must try to exemplify. It isn’t
always about ourselves. Sometimes, we have to put our wants and needs aside for the good of others. God wants us to help people. This call to serve my community, fellow humans and Mother Nature exemplify my idea of a life with a purpose. It is not always about our personal gains, but the good of our species. A life well lived should be studded with outreach and works of mercy. Putting one’s personal convictions aside is crucial to leading a life well lived through service.

ISLAND SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY
Prior to the start of the 2014-2015 school year, the East Meadow School District held its annual new teacher orientation, during which administrators and staff welcomed 32 new teachers. Held at the Leon J. Campo Salisbury Center on August 27th, the orientation made for a positive and insightful forum where new staff could become acquainted with one another and meet administrators. New teachers were made familiar with district policies, procedures and expectations, and were also given an official tour of the district aboard a school bus. Superintendent of Schools Louis R. DeAngelo wished the teachers great success during the upcoming school year. “A teacher needs to have the uncanny ability to balance somewhat dichotomous purposes; it’s a position requiring toughness and tenderness, firmness and fairness, fortitude and gratitude, and passion and compassion,” he said. “We believe that the ability to achieve this balance is what makes a good teacher.”
