Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and the Town Board are excited to welcome the return of organized recreation to America’s largest township and invite all residents to register for upcoming athletic classes for the fall season. Offering classes such as golf and tennis for youth and adults, these lessons are perfect for both beginner and
advanced athletes. What’s more, Hempstead Town’s popular pickleball classes will be open for adults and Lifeguard Training classes will be available for residents eager to earn their lifeguard certification. “Recreation has been sorely missed throughout the year 2020 but I am proud to welcome the return of athletic classes for the fall season,” said
Clavin. “Let’s continue to do our best to stop the spread of COVID-19 while enjoying safe recreation at beautiful Hempstead Town parks.” Registration for youth and adult athletic classes are online only and will begin on Wednesday, September 9th at 12 p.m. Registration will continue until the class is filled

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition
For Long Island, Inc.
The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community. They have stayed open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. WIBCC serves ALL of Long Island, not just West Islip! To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals: Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle.
Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable.
Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.
As like many other nonprofit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the charity code FG-WIBCC20. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org. Donations are greatly appreciated and are able to be made in memory of or in honor of a loved one. If you would like to volunteer, you can as well! Employees will be available to walk residents through the online registration program and answer questions. “Exercise is integral for both physical and mental health, which is more important now than ever,” said Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby. Added Councilman Bruce Blakeman, “I’m happy to see the return of recreation classes for the fall season.” “We know that residents are eager to get out of the house, and we encourage neighbors to check out all the great athletic programs offered by America’s largest township,” said Councilman Anthony D’Esposito. Added Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr., “The Town of Hempstead is committed to providing safe and socially distanced athletic programs to our residents.” “From golf, tennis, lifeguard training and everything in between, there’s something for everyone in the Town of Hempstead recreation program,” said Councilman Tom Muscarella. A Bittersweet Farewell Members of Division Avenue High School’s Class of 2020 turned the page on their high school careers on July 28. Despite the national pandemic, the seniors were celebrated during one of the school’s five abbreviated commencement ceremonies on the Levittown Memorial Field. The small, intimate ceremonies allowed for the graduates to be properly honored for their four years of hard work. Each senior was accompanied by at least one family member and were seated six feet apart from their fellow peers to adhere to New York State’s social distancing regulations. To beat the summer heat, the ceremonies were held under a large tent on the field. Proud central and building administrators, board of education members and Division Avenue staff members were present for the special day. Assistant Principal Jaclyn Guidice opened the ceremony by welcoming graduates, families and distinguished guests. Salutatorian Jacqueline Testamark performed the National Anthem which followed by a welcome address from
Principal John Coscia. He encouraged the graduates to dream big and to make an impact, just as the late Division Avenue teacher Michael Verdi did. “Mr. Verdi is no longer with us in body, but he is in spirit and he will be with us forever and louder than before,” said Mr. Coscia. “The dark times we faced together this year will never win…as we bid you farewell, my wish for you is that you dare to be as great as Mr. Verdi.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald approached the podium to acknowledge the handful of graduates who would be pursuing a military career. She also shared a special gift with the Class of 2020. A rock garden with two trees, located on the side of Levittown Memorial Education Center, was created to commemorate this year’s graduates from Division Avenue High School and MacArthur High School. Each Division Avenue graduate received a rock with their name on it. The rocks would be placed under a tree in the garden to represent the special class. Following her remarks, the graduates heard from
Testamark who gave her salutatorian address, Valedictorian Emily Fuchs and Class President Nataly Rodriguez. The students reflected on their time at Division Avenue High School and provided words of encouragement for their fellow peers. “Although the future is unknown, it is still in our hands,” Fuchs told her fellow peers. “It is up to you to decide how you react to the unexpected events of daily life.” Afterwards, Board President Peggy Marenghi was invited up to the podium to confer the diplomas. Each graduate walked across the platform at the front of the stage as Mr. Coscia, Dr. McDonald and board of education members applauded them. They received a diploma case and were encouraged to watch the virtual commencement ceremony which will be posted on the district website on July 30. At the conclusion of each ceremony, the students exited the field and walked to the rock garden. Each graduate placed their rock in the new garden, leaving their imprint on the Levittown Public Schools forever.

The Long Island Pharmacists Society (LIPS) has joined together with The New York City Society of Health System Pharmacists and Rock CAN Roll to offer a prescription to fight hunger on Long Island and to honor the memory of Bill Mantel, a pharmacist who contracted corona virus in March and passed away on April 17. The collection boxes at the participating pharmacies have been generously supplied by Rx REVERSE. In addition to Bill Montel, Covid-19 has claimed the lives of other members of the Long Island Pharmacists family including Orlando Cuevas and Artie Ponce. The inspiration for the food drive came to Rockville Center pharmacist Howard Jacobson who wanted to honor his friend’s memory. He reached out to Aimee Holtzman, the founder of Rock CAN Roll for her assistance in organizing, distributing and collecting the sorely needed items that will be donated at the local pharmacies over the next couple of weeks. The Pharm Aid Food Drive is happening now and will continue through Saturday, September 12th at participating pharmacies. On Sunday, September 13th between 2pm and 5pm a parade of pharmacists, friends, family and customers will drive by and drop off the

It has been a difficult time for many, as the COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way in which we have been permitted to assemble for a host of services, ceremonies, activities and events. While some governments have decided to scale back their September 11th ceremonies in the face of the Coronavirus, the Town of Hempstead has decided to move ahead with Long Island’s iconic seaside 9/11 memorial program. Hosted by Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin and the Town Board, friends, neighbors, clergy, family members of victims and all of those impacted by the events of September 11th will gather in a socially distanced and safe manner for a sunrise ceremony that will salute the heroes
of 9/11. The program will feature a speech by a family member of a late NYPD detective who died of a 9/11-related illness, and was known for his advocacy for fellow heroes of September 11th. Hempstead Town’s 9/11 Memorial Park includes ocean views, an elevated memorial walkway, a 30-foot-tall beam from the north tower of the World Trade Center, and a giant memorial table inscribed with Walt Whitman’s “On the Beach at Night.” The names of victims are etched on the monument and a directional plaque points to the location of the once majestic Twin Towers. Memorial Park is located at Town Park Point Lookout, Lido Boulevard, Point Lookout, NY (intersection
of Loop Parkway and Lido Boulevard) The beachside 9/11 memorial plays a special role in the lives of many Long Island neighbors, who were drawn to the beachfront in the wake of the terrorist attacks, looking westward in disbelief to the location where the majestic twin towers once stood.

heroism shown by our firstresponders and everyday people who stepped up during a time of crisis, while commemorating and reflecting on those we lost and continue to lose.” The Remembrance Ceremony will include surviving family members reading of names of residents who lost their lives in the attacks. The 9/11 Memorial at Eisenhower Park features plaques inscribed with the names of the 348 Nassau County victims who lost their lives on that day,
along with two semitransparent aluminum towers, representing the World Trade Center towers, and two pieces of steel recovered from the World Trade Center.
