Turning Pro By: Jamie Lynn Ryan So I recently decided that, seeing as my obsession with photography has only grown stronger over the years, I should probably invest in an actual camera one of these days – you know, the kind with a lens, adjustable settings, the whole deal. Smartphones are great and all, but realistically, there are certain images that would be better served by something a bit more… professional. Add to that the fact that, as a working journalist, I have often contemplated delving into the world of freelance photography, taking one of my favorite hobbies and turning it
into, well, something more than random meandering in search of sunsets and landscapes and quirky angles. Of course, I suppose this pursuit would also involve photographing humans from time to time…not exactly my favorite subject. See, the beauty of a landscape – aside from its quite literal beauty, of course – is that the only changing factors you need to contend with are weather-related. People, well, they’re a whole different story. They blink, they look away, they grow impatient and start waving their arms and talking before the flash finishes going off… all great material for the photo album. No wonder
why most of my digital camera roll winds up going straight to the trash. In this day and age, with all the mobile photography apps available, everyone purports to be a photographer in his or her own right. Take your smartphone, experiment with a couple of filters, post the finished product on Facebook and Instagram… then sit back and wait for the “likes,” “comments” and “shares” to come flooding in. Easy, right? Personally, I’d like to see some higher quality material on my newsfeed. Step one: purchase a “real” camera. Step two: learn how to use it. Step three: set off in search of those sunsets – and maybe a few people. Maybe.

This clinical research study is targeted to men and women between the ages of 55 and 85 who are experiencing gradual and progressive change in memory function over the last six months. The voluntary study will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational
drug in slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease To determine if individuals qualify for the clinical research study, they must undergo a pre-qualification screener. The results of the pre-qualification will determine if the person may be referred to a local center to discuss the study in further detail. September is World Alzheimer’s Month. In recognition of this worldwide initiative to raise awareness for the disease, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. (ADRC) is encouraging everyone to learn to spot the signs of dementia, while keeping loved ones in mind who battle or have lost the fight with this disease each day. Alzheimer’s disease is a degenerative brain disease and is the most common cause of dementia. The neurological disease affects an individual’s ability to perform everyday tasks. This decline is the result of damage to the areas of the brain involved in cognitive function. Nearly 44 million people worldwide have Alzheimer’s or a related dementia. Only one in four people with Alzheimer’s have been diagnosed. The cost of caring for Alzheimer’s patients in the world has risen to $605 billion. The social,

This month, Nassau BOCES Regional Summer School (RSS) completed another year of successful programming, helping Nassau County students to improve themselves in everything from core academics to the arts. Since its inception, the six-week summer program has grown to serve more than 17,000 students through 58 programs in 23 districts across the county. In the past year alone, enrollment has increased by 25 percent. The largest and perhaps most essential component of RSS is credit recovery, helping students who are struggling with core academics to make up what they were unable to complete during the school year. A key element of this is the intensive two-week Regents course, which prepares students to retake the Regents exam in August and improve their scores. With recent changes to the Regents designed to better reflect the common core curriculum, more students than ever are retaking the exam. This year more than 1,200 students are using RSS to prepare for the Common Core Algebra Regents. “It’s extremely high stakes for these students,” RSS Principal Judith Hynes said of the importance of the program. “They cannot graduate without passing

Supervisor Kate Murray and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad are encouraging all parents and guardians to take advantage of the town’s Child Safety I.D. program, an easy and free service that can be vital in the event of a missing child or other emergency situation. “Keeping kids safe is one of the most important responsibilities that the Town of Hempstead shares with families, school officials and caregivers,” said Murray. “While we certainly hope that an emergency situation never arises, it’s imperative that parents and guardians be prepared with their child’s
photo and fingerprint information to share with police and other emergency personnel.” The Child Safety I.D. Program is administered by the Town Clerk’s Office, located on the first floor of Hempstead Town Hall (1 Washington Street, Hempstead). The town offers FREE fingerprinting and photo services Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. The parent/ guardian will go home with all of their child’s information, and the town does not retain any photos or fingerprints. “I am proud to partner with Supervisor Murray to provide this important
child safety service for local residents,” added Ahmad. The Town Clerk’s Office also provides a Mobile Child Identification Program, in which the town’s dedicated child safety experts can visit schools, civic groups and other local organizations to provide the service. Smooth Opening Toting backpacks and boxes full of school supplies, Wantagh School District students disembarked from bright yellow school buses and carpools ready and excited to start the 2015-2016 school year on September 1st. Open for Learning of Schools Dr. Joseph S. Famularo and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr. Joanne C. Dacek were on hand for the opening of the Bellmore Rising Star PreKindergarten Program. The program will run two and a half hours per day, Monday through Friday, for Bellmore students turning four years old by Dec. 1 and will emphasize the development of cognitive, literacy, social-emotional and gross motor skills. The students will learn through self-discovery and play and will have the opportunity to form positive peer relationships from an early age, while easing the transition into kindergarten.
Dr. Famularo noted he was not only impressed by the district’s smooth opening, but by the way in which students and teachers were prepared to begin instruction. “We will continue to emphasize the education of the whole child through our Bellmore Stars program and promote our core values of dedication, respect, integrity, teamwork and trust,” Dr. Famularo said. “I look forward to continuing to build upon our unique ‘Community of Learners’ and providing opportunities for our students to become productive global citizens.”

Staff Gathers The East Meadow School District held their Superintendent’s Conference Day on September 1st, 2015, during which Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo visited all staff at their respected schools to welcome them
back to the new school year. During the conference day, Campo visited all nine schools, expressing his enthusiasm for the school year and asked all staff to continue giving their best to their students. As the day continued, each
school held its own faculty meeting to reflect on last year’s successes and to establish goals for this school year. The principals of each school also shared their excitement for a successful school year.

In 3087, a woman collapsed during a routine child birth; her bones caved in on each other and pierced all of her vital organs, killing her almost instantly. The doctors couldn’t do anything. After a thorough examination of the mother’s body, the scientists saw that her bones did not break, but bent in on themselves under the weight of her skin. The scientist examined the newborn, fearing the same outcome. However, they did not find fragile bone structure like the mother had; they found an exceptionally strong bone structure. The newborn had bone structure strength equal to an average ten year-old boy. That cycle of strong boned child births continued throughout the years.
In the year 4012, a different birth mutation occurred. A mother carried a weak-boned child and, when she was born, doctors decided on a mercy killing, calling it “sparing the loss for the future generations.” Through further investigation, scientists discovered that the father had a 75% weak bone probability and killed him too, again to “spare the loss for the future generations.” The people started calling them “mercy killings for the good of the future.” The last mutation occurred in 4070, when a male and a female produced a child with such strong bone structure that the only appropriate term was titaniumboned. When the mother and father where checked, their genes showed that the mother had all strong bone chromosomes and the father had all strong bone chromosomes, in effect producing
a titanium baby. Titanium babies are extremely rare, so rare that only one in a thousand showed a titaniumboned person. The government was fighting for territory when they heard the news of an improved gene malfunction; they sought them all, literally taking the children out of their mothers’ arms. Subsequently, they trained these children to fight for territory. What the government did not consider was how enraged the public would become at the fact that their children were being taken - and that anger and rage started a civil war. It is now 5028, and the war still continues. I was born in 5009, making me 19 years old. I am one of the few titanium bones left.

Incoming Levittown sixth-graders from Jonas E. Salk and Wisdom Lane middle schools attended orientation assemblies prior to the start of the 2015-2016 school year. At Jonas E. Salk, Principal John Zampaglione and Assistant Principal Patrick Mulligan greeted the students and advised them to be organized, to work hard and ask questions. The
school’s junior leaders also assisted the newcomers with learning to open locks, many for the first time, and locating their lockers and classrooms. Wisdom Lane students attended orientation with their parents and were warmly greeted by Principal John Avena, Assistant Principal Craig Arvelo-Shaw and sixthgrade advisor Dave Radtke,
who discussed a typical day schedule, classroom transitions, homework and key policies. During the morning event, the students received advice and information about what to expect on the first day of school from Principal Carolyn Breivogel and Assistant Principal James Brown, an introduction to new assistant principal Jennifer Santorello and
words of wisdom from upperclassmen. “Today, the school belongs to you,” Breivogel told the students. “If I have one word of advice for all of you, it is my mantra, ‘Your name is your most prized possession.’” Brown explained that high school students are given more privileges and responsibility, and urged them to always ask whether their actions and words are right, fair and kind. Student athletes Darcie Smith and Mark Buchner explained that being a school-athlete is a privilege
and that school always comes first. In addition, General Organization CoPresidents Emily Latif and Brendan von Runnen encouraged the freshmen to become involved in the school’s various clubs and activities. After guidance counselors distributed class schedules, students were invited to tour the building, find their classrooms and attend a club fair, so they could join one of the school’s various clubs and organizations.

Sunrise Ceremony Hempstead Town will host is annual memorial program alongside the waters of the Atlantic Ocean at Point Lookout Town Park, 7:30 a.m. on September 11th, 2015. Those attending the ceremony will play an active and integral role in a moving tribute to the heroes who perished in the terrorist attacks of September 11th. The ceremony will focus on the legacy of 9/11 victims and the theme of “renewal.” A powerful focal point of the ceremony will be an 18foot tall, chromium replica of the World Trade Center, rising majestically from the shoreline. The towers will be set against a new 35-foot long “inspiration mural,” depicting Manhattan’s skyline. A tribute fountain will rest at the base of the compelling memorial display. As part of the program, participants are asked to cast white carnations upon the fountain. Attendees
will be given permanent markers and invited to write the names of loved ones who perished in the attacks or of illnesses related to their work at Ground Zero upon the inspiration mural. As the final interactive component, guests will place miniature American flags, which include message tags, at a sand platform in front of the towers. “We are compelled to return to this beach on an annual pilgrimage of personal reflection and renewal in communion with the victims who perished on the saddest day in this nation’s history,” stated Murray. “Hundreds of neighbors return to this location each year, the same place where they gathered immediately after the 9/11 attacks, looking toward the site of the once majestic towers.” Additional elements of the ceremony include performances by the

With the end of summer quickly approaching, New York Blood Center is encouraging blood donors to set aside one hour to give the gift of life and strengthen our community’s blood supply. The summer months are traditionally a challenging time for blood centers to collect donated units – school breaks, summer vacations, and warm weather all have negative impacts on blood drive scheduling and donor attendance. For more information or to schedule
an appointment, please visit nybloodcenter.org or call 800.933.BLOOD. We all know the need for blood never takes a holiday. About 4.5 million Americans receive blood transfusions every year, and nearly 2,000 donations are needed each day in New York and New Jersey alone. One in seven hospital admissions will need a blood transfusion, including cancer and surgery patients, trauma and burn victims, newborn babies and new mothers. “We’re encouraging
everyone who is eligible to roll up their sleeves and donate,” said Andrea Cefarelli, Executive Director of Recruitment at New York Blood Center. “Summer blood donations help prevent a shortage, allowing us to continue providing life-saving units to patients and hospitals.” Donors with O-negative blood type, or “universal donors,” are especially encouraged to donate, as their blood can be used in emergency situations when there is no time for blood typing.
There is no substitute for blood donations. Blood products have a limited shelf life, and supplies must be continually replenished. A single donation can help save at least three lives when the blood is separated into its components: red blood cells, plasma and platelets. Red blood cells, for example, are used to make up for blood lost – car accident victims may need as many as 50 or more red cell transfusions. Plasma and platelets, on

the other hand, contain clotting factors to help stop bleeding. They are used to treat patients with blood diseases and patients undergoing chemotherapy or a bone marrow transplant. Any company, community organization, place of worship, or individual may host a blood drive. Blood donors receive free mini-medical exams on site including information about their temperature, blood pressure and hematocrit level. Eligible donors
include those people at least age 16 (parental consent is required for 16 year-olds), who weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, are in good health and meet all Food & Drug Administration and NY or NJ State Department of Health donor criteria. People age 76 or older may donate if they have a doctor’s note on file with New York Blood Center or if they bring one on the day of the blood drive.
