Special Service Continued From 2 Lookout beach, the same place that hundreds of neighbors assembled in the immediate aftermath of the terrorist attacks looking to the west in horror and disbelief. Is it any wonder that thousands of people come to Point Lookout each year on 9/11?” The early morning ceremony will commence at 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, September 11th. The gathering will occur at Town Park Point Lookout at the intersection of Lido Boulevard and Loop Parkway. While there will be close to 500 seats available, residents are encouraged to bring beach chairs as the event typically exceeds the available seating. The ceremony will include remarks by two people who had their siblings snatched from them in the attacks on Ground Zero. The
sister of a hero FDNY firefighter will recount her brother’s enduring legacy, and will discuss her personal tribute to her brother, participating in Hempstead Town’s Triathlon the day before 9/11. Her brother took part in the event two days prior to September 11th in 2001. Joining this powerful woman will be the brother of a lady who worked for Cantor Fitzgerald at the time of her death. Devout in her faith and dedicated to helping others, a memorial fund in her name has assisted countless people in the United States and Israel with healthcare, religious guidance and financial assistance. The backdrop for the town’s 9/11 program features a 15-foot-tall reverse shadow box of the iconic towers set against a 35-foot-long “remembrance mural” of the skyline of the “world’s
capital.” A reflecting pool and sand monument will be at the foot of the towers and skyline. Also at the ceremony, the public will hear reflections on 9/11 by members of Long Island’s clergy and Supervisor Santino. Musical performances by the Kellenberg Gregorian Consortium and various soloists will be part of the program. Two fire department flag arches will greet guests, and the waters of the Atlantic will provide a backdrop of solace and healing. “I invite Long Islanders, indeed anyone, who has been touched by the terrorist attacks of September 11th to come to Hempstead Town’s 9/11 seaside ceremony,” concluded Santino. “Join with neighbors in a touching tribute and a celebration of the legacy that has been left to us by the heroes of September 11th.”

Incoming sixth-grade students and their parents eagerly lined up at registration tables on Wantagh Middle School’s front lawn to receive their schedules during the school’s annual barbeque on August 25th. During the event, the students were invited to tour the school, find their lockers and mingle with friends. Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction John C. McNamara and members
of the Board of Education were on hand to welcome students and parents, as were Principal Dawn Matrochano and Assistant Principal Dr. Stephanie Scolieri, who were available to assist students with the opening of lockers and last-minute business matters. Members of Girl Scout Troop 3435 handed out a helpful hints flyer with tips for doing well in middle school and Miss Wantagh organization representatives assisted with handing out
schedules. “Orientation is a great opportunity for the students from all three elementary schools to familiarize themselves with the school, become reacquainted with former classmates and to make new friends,” Matrochano said. After the students finished setting up their lockers and comparing schedules with their friends, everyone attended a delicious barbeque lunch.

Early this summer, Susan Greco of Wantagh was recognized for her studies at the Nassau BOCES Adult Learning Center (ALC) during an emotional ceremony held at the ALC in the St. Bernard’s School in Levittown. Ms. Greco is now ready to enter the workforce after working
to improve her English language skills with others receiving their New York State High School Equivalency Diploma by completing the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) exam. The Nassau BOCES ALC boasts a comprehensive curriculum and offers classes in English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), and High School Equivalency (HSE). All classes assist students to be prepared for college or career choices. Ms. Greco, who earned her High School Equivalency Diploma this year, delivered an inspirational and
motivational speech at this year’s ceremony, honoring her time at the ALC and offering words of advice for the future. “If you don’t like where you are in life, spend time with yourself,” she advised her fellow students. “Believe it or not, failure is good. It serves a purpose. It teaches us to win. Discipline is the gift you give yourself. Learning is this great push-pull with a rewarding payoff – confidence. What comes next only you can decide,” she said. “But whatever your goal is, go get it, be fierce, and remember when you achieve it that you did it. Be proud!”

Early this summer, Noemy Flores Sudberg and Olga Ventura of Levittown were recognized for their studies at the Nassau BOCES Adult Learning Center (ALC) during an emotional ceremony held at the ALC in the St. Bernard’s School in Levittown. The two are now ready to enter the workforce after working to improve their English language skills with others receiving their New York State High School Equivalency Diploma by completing the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) exam. The Nassau BOCES ALC boasts a comprehensive
curriculum and offers classes in English as a Second Language (ESL), Adult Basic Education (ABE), and High School Equivalency (HSE). All classes assist students to be prepared for college or career choices. Ms. Sudberg and Ms. Ventura, both of whom earned the Academic Achievement Award, delivered inspirational and motivational speeches at this year’s ceremony, honoring their time at the ALC and offering words of advice for the future. “Nassau BOCES has given me an amazing opportunity to improve my English,” Ms. Sudberg said. “My speaking, writing and reading skills have gotten better. Because of this, more doors are open to me and I have better job opportunities. I feel more comfortable speaking in public, such as at my children’s parent-teacher conferences. I am grateful to my amazing, wonderful and helpful teachers. Nassau BOCES has been and will continue to be very important to me.”

New faculty received a warm welcome from administration and the board of education during Levittown School District’s New Teacher Orientation on August 30th, held at the Levittown Memorial Education Center. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald, Board Vice President Peggy Marenghi, Assistant Superintendent for Human Resources Debbie Rifkin and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Todd Winch were on hand to welcome the faculty and to congratulate them on their new positions.
After revealing humorous anecdotes of her first days as a teacher, Dr. McDonald advised the faculty to take advantage of school and district leadership, as well as colleagues, when in need of assistance. “Don’t forget to reach out to each other,” she said. Mrs. Marenghi noted that that the goal of the district is to help every student learn by tapping into his or her potential. “As long as you live by this motto, you will succeed,” she said. Mr. Winch also urged the staff to “work together to achieve the best possible
educational program for students.” After being introduced to union leaders, Assistant Superintendent for Business William Pastore and Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Services Dr. Donald Sturz, the new faculty attended workshops on policy, districtwide technology, benefits, setting up a classroom, evaluation procedures and more. At the end of the orientation, they also received time to set up their classrooms for the September 6th start of the 2016-2017 school year.
Benefit Concert Set Long Island artists GIMME SOME SKIN and The Singing Webster Trio will join Vanilla Fudge lead guitar player and US Navy veteran Vince Martell at a benefit concert for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund (IFHF), a not-for profit organization and national leader supporting the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families, on Saturday, September 10th at K. J. Ferrell’s Bar & Grill, located at 242 Pettit Avenue in Bellmore. Doors open at 5 p.m. Tickets cost $10 in
advance, $15 at the door. 100% of donations to the IFHF, every cent, go directly towards building Intrepid Spirit centers, facilities that diagnose and treat TBI and psychological health conditions in U.S. service members. Each center costs approximately $11 million to construct and equip with the latest in brain technology and treatment facilities and spans 25,000 square feet. Intrepid Spirit centers are operational at Fort Belvoir, VA; Camp Lejeune, NC; Fort Campbell, KY; Fort Hood, TX; and Fort Bragg,
NC. A center is under construction at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA, and an additional three centers still need to be built. Intrepid Spirit centers are funded and built by the IFHF through a $100 million fundraising campaign. Though the centers are being built exclusively through private donations, each center is gifted to the Department of Defense for operation and management upon completion. All of the centers are located at military bases around the country.

The Levittown School District has appointed Terence Rusch as assistant principal of Division Avenue High School, effective August 1st, 2016. Rusch, a Bayside
Great Neck Public School District. Rusch replaces John Coscia, who currently serves as principal of Division Avenue High School. Mr. Rusch holds his bachelor’s degree in English literature and composition from Fairfield University, a master’s degree in childhood education and teaching students with disabilities from St. John’s University, and advanced certification in educational leadership and administration from Queen’s College. Ready for School The excitement was palpable as Wantagh School District teachers and support staff filed into the high school’s auditorium for Superintendent’s Conference Day held on August 31st. In keeping with Wantagh tradition, members of the police department, government representatives and community organization members were also invited to attend the assembly, which officially kicked off the 2016-2017 school year. During his introductory comments, Board of Education President Anthony Greco
commended the administration, teachers and support staff for their professionalism and dedication in preparing students for success and reminded them that they serve as role models. “As you enter your classrooms on the first day of school, I would like for you to keep in mind that each of you serves as a role model and mentor to students, who learn through example the importance of lifelong learning and hard work,” Greco said. Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg urged the teachers to “make
it a goal to be the kind of teacher students don’t forget.” She also reminded them that teachers are more important than they think. “I hope you rekindle your own enthusiasm,” she said. “You are the heart and soul of the school system.” In addition to welcoming remarks, the staff was required to attend elementary and secondary department meetings, building faculty meetings and even had time to set up their classrooms for the first day of school on September 1st.
Staff Members Start the Year The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently welcomed 25 new staff members for the 2016-2017 school year. The new members gathered on August 29th for a special orientation to familiarize themselves with the district’s administrators, buildings and policies. In his welcome address to the new staff, Superintendent of Schools John DeTommaso said,
“By putting kids first and always, results will always follow.” Throughout the day, the new staff members heard from a variety of district administrators on topics ranging from effective communication to leveraging the increased technological capabilities available for instruction such as the Bring Your Own Device initiative and SMART Boards. On August
30th, staff continued their orientation at their respective buildings, during which they met with their principals, department supervisors and their mentors or “buddy teachers” to review instructional topics. The district welcomes all staff members back for the start of the new year and wishes them a successful school year ahead!

The school’s junior leaders also assisted the newcomers with opening their locks, many for the first time, and locating their lockers and classrooms. At the end of the program, the students were taken on a tour of the building. Wisdom Lane sixthgraders attended orientation with their parents, who were greeted
by Principal John Avena, Assistant Principal Craig Arvelo-Shaw and other members of the administration and faculty. They learned about a typical day schedule, classroom transitions, key policies and the parent portal. After the assembly, the students were invited to find their homerooms and to practice opening their lockers.

This is the time of year, in late summer, when all thoughts point north – to Saratoga Springs, home of the world-famous race course, the sprawling Adirondack Mountains… and utter tranquility. My family and I have been going to Saratoga for the better part of my life each summer, our little “home away from home” where the air is fresher, the people are friendlier and the city welcomes you as one of its own. Primarily a “summer town,” Saratoga is perhaps best known for its thoroughbred racing; but that is certainly only a small aspect of what it has to offer. Simple wandering down Broadway, the main strip of town, will afford you
endless hours of browsing in the quaint shops, eating at the dozens of restaurants and bars, wandering through the two beautiful parks and gawking at the gorgeous multi-million dollar homes. If you wander slightly off the beaten path, you will find the National Racing Museum, the National Dance Museum and the grounds of Yaddo Gardens, an artists’ retreat housing some of the most beautiful and exotic plants within its gates. Skidmore College calls Saratoga home as well, as it cultivates the next generation of artists and, with them, the artistic vibe which reverberates throughout the city. The Saratoga Performing Arts Center, located within the cozy confines of Saratoga State Park, welcomes cultural performances of all genres
throughout the summer, from the NYC Ballet to the Philadelphia Orchestra to some of the most popular national musical acts. Another staple of the schedule is the annual Jazz Festival, a two-day event which brings together thousands of people on the lawn to picnic and enjoy a common love. Of course, Saratoga Springs has plenty to offer throughout the year; but there is something about those late summer weekends, that mixture of sunshine and slight chill in the air, the tailend of racing season and the beginning of a new college year, which seems like the best of all worlds. Indeed, how happy I am that Saratoga has become a part of my world, at least for a brief moment each summer.
