Stuff-a-Bus Sort-a-thon The Long Island Nets and the United Way of Long Island recently held a Sort-a-Thon event at NYCB Live, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in partnership with Target as part of the 2017 annual Stuff-A-Bus campaign. The Sort-A-Thon featured more than 75 volunteers including Senator Elanie Phillips and Senator Kemp Hannon, along with members of their respective staffs,

Target employees, representatives of the Long Island Nets and members of Union 338. Volunteers sorted thousands of school supplies to be donated to the Uniondale School District to benefit students in need for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year. The school supplies included backpacks, binders, colored pencils, notebooks, glue sticks and other useful tools that have been collected from more

than 25 drop-off locations throughout Long Island. Over the past eight years, United Way of Long Island’s Stuff-A-Bus program has provided hundreds of thousands of school supplies to Long Island students. 2017 is the first time that Stuff-ABus will be held in Nassau County. The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program offers new ongoing support groups on a weekly and monthly basis. Weekly Groups General Support Group Mondays, 6-7:30 p.m. Women who are recently diagnosed with breast cancer will have the opportunity to meet with others in similar situations. Support Group for Caregivers of People with Breast Cancer Mondays, 6-7:30 p.m. Taking care of person with breast cancer can be stressful. This group is designed to address the needs of care takers. Any person who is experiencing the stress and anxiety of caring for a loved one with breast cancer should attend. Young Women’s Support Group, Under 40 Tuesdays, 6-7:30 p.m. Women under the age of 40 who are diagnosed with breast cancer have unique needs. This support group will focus on hose concerns while allowing the members to share their feelings in a safe supportive environment. Anyone who wants to connect with and receive support from women under 40 should attend. It is a month of transition, as children head back to school, young adults pack up for college, and the rest of us try to adjust to the lessening light, the chillier temperatures and embrace all that the new season has to offer. district’s philosophy that students and teachers alike should have a growth mindset. “New teacher orientation is an opportunity to welcome our new staff to the district, educate them about our mission and core values, and show them all we have to offer for academic, social and emotional learning,” said Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Janet Pollitt. “From the start, we want to make them feel like a part of the North Bellmore family.” The district welcomes 12 new teachers this year, spread out across the five elementary schools, seven grade levels and special subject areas. That includes

three student-teachers who will spend the year at Saw Mill Road Elementary School through the Adelphi University Model Teaching Program. Julia Kriegel, a special education teacher at Park Avenue Elementary School, is new to the district. She said she is excited to work in a district with a growth mindset philosophy because teachers “never stop being students.” “I’m excited to meet the students and have my own class,” added Melissa Reime, a new kindergarten teacher at Park Avenue, who student taught in the district last year. “North Bellmore is incredible. Everyone that I talk to is so willing to help.”

Master Class Held Bellmore-Merrick CHSD students Jeremy Kaplan and Thomas Stoerger attended a Master Class with Long Island University’s (LIU) internationally recognized Long Island Sound Jazz Ensemble, held for student musicians from Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), where the two study music. The LIHSA Master Class program is part of the school’s ongoing mission to provide students with an inside look at the industries they are pursuing, and to

introduce them to mentors within their chosen fields. Long Island Sound - conducted by Linda Ciofalo, LIU’s Director of Music Education and Chairperson of the Department of Music shared their techniques and experiences with members of the LIHSA Jazz Ensemble. LIHSA students learned about the body-voice connection and the importance of stage presence, and practiced muscle and mental exercises using the meditative Alexander technique. At the end

of the class, the LIHSA musicians took center stage, showing what they know with performances of jazz legend Chick Corea’s fusion composition “Spain” and the Irving Berlin classic “Puttin’ On the Ritz.” “It was a very interactive, engaging afternoon for our students,” LIHSA Percussion Instructor Jerry Nobile said of the experience. “Long Island Sound shared tips to enhance performance. LIU students and staff were very impressed with the level of talent of our musicians.”

The program began with icebreaker activities so the new staff members could get to know each other. Wantagh High School’s incoming ninth-graders were introduced to their home for the next four years when they attended freshmen orientation on August 28th. In addition to touring the building, the students learned about the expanded opportunities they will have. Principal Carolyn Breivogel spoke about the school’s philosophy, “Your name is your most

powerful possession,” and encouraged students to think about the choices they will make that affects the reputations attached to their names. She also noted that high school represents a fresh start. Assistant Principals James Brown and Jennifer Santorello reviewed the schedule, cellphone and attendance policies, dress code and social media etiquette. Student leaders

told the new ninth-graders to make the most of their high school experiences by getting involved in extracurricular activities and sports. A club fair followed in the courtyard. The students met with their guidance counselors and received their schedules. Members of the Class of 2021 roamed the building to find their classrooms and try out their new lockers.

Others include talks on reiki, astrology, hot

flashes, trusts, reinventing yourself, knitting, a country line dancing class, and a dance performance by the Seasoned Steppers, a group of women who are age 66+ and are former Ms. New York Senior America pageant contestants. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates events at area malls under the business name Specialty Connections. “Because Americans are living longer, they should seek to live life to its fullest. There are so many opportunities here on Long Island. The purpose of the Over 50 Fair is to show people where to find them.”

Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

As we watch the terrible devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas, we feel so much compassion for all who have been affected by this disaster - the pictures and stories have been unbelievable.

New York State Department of E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation (DEC) E n v i r o n m e n t a l Conservation Officer (ECO) Timothy Fay received the 2016 “Officer of the Year” award from the ShikarSafari Club International in a ceremony hosted by long-time Club member

Robert Stackler, DEC Commissioner Basil Seggos announced today. Shikar-Safari Club International was founded in 1952 by an international group of hunters interested in exchanging ideas about the sport. Each year the club sponsors an award for the Wildlife Conservation Police Officer of the

Year in all 50 states, 10 Canadian provinces and the territories of both nations, acknowledging the important part ECOs play in local, national, and international wildlife conservation. ECO Fay grew up in the Town of Champlain in Clinton County and after graduating high school joined the US Army serving 21 years, retiring from the New York Army National Guard. He attended Buffalo State Collage graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree and Graduate work in Multidisciplinary Studies. He attended and graduated from the 17th Basic Academy for Uniformed Officers, a twenty-six week residential police academy held in 2007. After graduation Tim was assigned to Region 1 and patrolled Suffolk County enforcing New York’s Environmental Conservation Law,

including investigating hunting, fishing and trapping activity, releases of petroleum, asbestos and other hazardous substances, water pollution, wetland damage, timber theft, wild animals unlawfully kept as pets, and commercial and recreational marine fishing. ECO Fay keeps the mission of the Division of Law Enforcement (DLE) close to his heart, and thoroughly enjoys all the aspects of the mission, from tickets and arrest, to education, and especially outreaches. He is involved in the Youth Conservation Program, Youth Waterfowl Day and other youth oriented hunting and fishing outreaches. ECO Fay maintains one of the most diverse enforcement programs in the Division. He is adept at all aspects of the Environmental

Conservation Law. Additionally, he successfully networks with outside agencies and organizations, and he actively accepts outreach projects for the Division, helping to spread the word for protection of the environment and the State’s natural resources. ECO Fay was recognized for numerous successful marine fish and wildlife investigations involving shellfish, crustacean and food fish. With his diverse workload, he was also responsible for multiple cases concerning the unlawful disposal of solid waste. This recognition also includes his work as a Field Training Officer, directing and guiding new officers in the field, locating, identifying, enforcing big game violations and bringing the charges to a successful resolution in court. ECO Fay is trained and

certified in many fields of work with the DEC Division of Law Enforcement. He is a Field training officer and a Firearms instructor, training new and current police officers inside the DEC as well as outside agencies. He is also as a member of the NYS DEC/ DLE Special Operations Group (SOG) completing the DEC Basic Tactical Operator’s Course in 2015 and the SWAT Operator Course in 2016. For the past 11 years, ECO Fay’s professional work ethic and commitment to his profession resulted in him being nominated and receiving the ShikarSafari Club International Officer of the Year award. Tim resides in Northport in Suffolk County with his wife Anne and four daughters, Emily, Lauren, Nora and Valerie.

Grant Available The Student Activist Grant of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island is available to Nassau County middle school and high school students who want to create a better world. The $500 grant funds a selected student’s project in areas of peace, humanitarian efforts, the environment, disaster relief, or disadvantaged groups. The project can be

a fundraiser that connects to an existing organization (such as the Habitat for Humanity) or makes a direct change (such as a neighborhood clean-up or voter registration drive). The grant will give the student seed money to conduct the project. Previous Student Activist Grants have supported safe recycling of medicine containers

for clinics in Malawi, building a greenhouse on a high school campus, spring baskets for children in homeless shelters, educating high school students about underage drinking with stickers on pizza boxes, creating an outdoor play area at a homeless shelter, running a Bowl-a-thon for Habitat for Humanity, and creating and selling ornaments to

raise money for a breast cancer program. Says 2015 grant recipient Matthew Berman of Roslyn High School who collected 3500 pill bottles that were sent to Africa, “I am so grateful for this opportunity that the grant presented me with to turn this plan on paper into a successful and functioning reality.” The student must be a Nassau County resident,
