The Charity of the Month for September is: The Twilight Wish Foundation www.twilightwish.org
The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight W i s h celebrations. Senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world. The number of Americans who are 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. In the United States today, 1 in 3 seniors older than 65 live alone and the number of seniors living alone only increases with age. Many of these seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values
and respects our senior population. Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. This Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have full-time jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population. They are presently looking to expand their outreach to seniors by making our business and community leaders/charitable organizations aware of who they are. Wantagh School District welcomed 23 new faculty members during the annual teacher orientation program prior to the opening of school. Superintendent of Schools John McNamara and Assistant Superintendent for Instruction Dr. Marc Ferris introduced the new faculty to district administrators, who spoke about policies, expectations, benefits and more. These introductions were followed by a morning workshop about inspirational learning held by Dr. Ferris. “Helping kids grow is one of our most important tasks,” Dr. Ferris explained to the new faculty. “Letting kids know that we care about them will help them grow as students and individuals.” During the three-day orientation, the new faculty received a K-5 and 6-12 technology overview, training on effective communication in the classroom and a tour of each of their home buildings. The teachers also received an overview of district programs, including Understanding
by Design (UbD) training to assist their lesson planning and Fundations, an earlyintervention program for reading and spelling. Wantagh United Teachers also generously hosted a lunch and the district held a bus tour of the community. Creating And Innovating More than 100 children from the Levittown School District discovered the wonders of the world at Camp Invention, a twoweek summer science program that promoted learning through hands-on inquiry. The camp, at Wisdom Lane Middle School, was open to students entering third, fourth and fifth grades. Program coordinator Siobhan Schneider said that the activities were designed to help children develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills, work as a team and think strategically. In Deep Sea Mystery, each group had to create a seaworthy vessel using only supplied materials. At the end, the boats were placed into a pool of water and weight was added to see how long they could stay afloat. Students also participated in a fossil dig and navigation-based
activities. Children became inventors in the Innovation Force workshop. Each group had to make a device that could grab objects from a distance. They learned about the invention process from coming up with an idea, to building a prototype, to securing a patent. DYI Orbot was a robotics-based course with different challenges. Students designed bridges and tunnels to have their robots pass over and under and built towers to knock over. A favorite activity was when students attached markers to their robots and moved them over a piece of paper to create art. Farm Tech allowed students to create a high-tech farm with machines that prepared soil, pollinated crops and launch bales of hay. Children accomplished these missions using programmable robots. The outdoor Camp Invention
Games station featured activities that had scientific themes, such as animals, space and the weather. There were plenty of water games to keep cool, like Kangaroo in which children had to hop across the field with a bucket of water balloons and keep them from falling out. The stations were led by Levittown teachers, with support from high school counselors. The program totaled 35 hours of fun and education during the 10 days. Fifth grader Paul Siegel, from Gardiners Avenue School, attended Camp Invention for the first time and said it was a worthwhile experience. “It’s very exciting and I’m glad all of my friends are here,” he said. “I like making stuff and playing games. Everything that we do is so creative, and I love it.”

A Community SHIELD Holder East Meadow High School senior Matt Pienkowski was recognized this summer as a recipient of the Nassau County District Attorney’s SHIELD Award. Matt joined his peers from across Nassau County to meet District Attorney Madeline Singas in July as she commended students
who made positive contributions to their respective communities. The SHIELD award stands for service, honesty, integrity, excellence, leadership and duty and is presented to individuals who show outstanding strength of character, commitment to selfgrowth and the spirit and

USDAN SUMMER CAMPS’ FUNDRAISING GALA - Usdan Summer Camp for the Arts’ annual fundraising gala — dubbed The Sassafras Bash — was held on and around the camp’s 140-acre campus. The event honored Usdan alum and publisher of the Harry Potter book series, Arthur Levine, and Brentwood High School’s Christina Hellbock and Kelly Hillard for contributions to the community. Art projects and performances were spread throughout the landscape and included songs from the cast of “Singin’ In the Rain,” a movement piece from students in the Choreographic Institute, an encore presentation of “Knight Music” — a collaborative composition created by International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE) and campers in Usdan’s Chess and Music programs as well as moving speeches and incredible student performances from the stage. It’s almost time for backto-school! Packing the kids’ lunches for school means you have control over which foods they are eating. Parents can manage nutritious meals even when the kids are at school. According to the American Heart Association, American kids consume 35-50 percent of their daily calories while in school. So, healthy lunches can have a big impact on children’s health through good nutrition. Today, about one in three American kids and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963. Among children today, obesity is causing a broad range of health problems that previously weren’t seen until adulthood. These include high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and elevated blood cholesterol levels. Nutrition can go a long way toward preventing these illnesses in children. Here are some budgetfriendly, creative ideas from the American Heart Association to help keep kids happy and healthy at lunchtime: Make a Smarter Sandwich While some kids prefer the same thing every day, many kids want variety in their lunches. Sandwiches are easy, portable and kid-friendly. · Use different breads like 100% whole-wheat tortilla wraps (choose wraps low in saturated fat and made with no hydrogenated oils) or 100% whole-wheat pita pockets. ·In addition to lettuce and tomato, try shredded carrot or zucchini and sliced cucumbers, peppers, or apple or pear with a turkey sandwich. ·Try avocado or hummus as a swap for cheese or mayo.
·Try a leftover grilled chicken in your sandwich as a healthy swap for lunch meat. Love those Leftovers Think about using the leftovers from a family favorite dinner for a next day lunch. Use a thermos to keep foods hot or cold until the lunch bell rings. The prepared/ packaged versions of these foods sometimes have a lot of sodium, so make them homemade with little or no salt, or compare nutrition facts of similar products and choose the ones with less sodium. ·Soup - tomato, vegetable or bean ·Chili (vegetarian or made with lean or extra lean ground chicken) ·Spaghetti or curly pasta salad (whole wheat with veggies and chicken added) ·Bean casserole or beans & rice with vegetables. Let Them Dunk Sometimes it’s OK to let your kids play with their food, especially when they are getting extra nutrition. Try packing one of these fun dunks with dippers: ·Apple and pear slices to dip into low-fat plain yogurt or peanut butter. Cortland, Empire and Ginger Gold apples brown at a slower rate than other apples. · Carrot, celery and sweet pepper strips to dip into hummus, fresh salsa or homemade bean dip. ·Whole-grain, low-sodium, low-fat crackers* or slices of grilled tofu (a soybean product) to dunk into soup. Avoid packing sugary drinks like “power” drinks, soda, or sugar-added juices to your kids’ lunchboxes, or home meals. Water or school
purchased milk are great options to reduce sugar in the diet. Let the crunchy snacks be fruit or cut veggies, not fried, fatty chips. Get Them Involved When kids help pack their lunches, they’re more likely to eat that lunch! On nights you have a bit more time, like a Sunday night, have them choose which piece of fruit or what type of whole grain bread they want and let them assemble their lunch. An Effort To buildOn Members of the buildOn club at Mepham High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District recently visited Senegal, Africa along with several parents to build a school in the village of Keur Yorro after raising $49,020. The group was comprised of 17 students that supported buildOn, an international nonprofit organization that runs youth service programs and builds schools in
developing countries. The organization has partnered with villages for nearly 30 years to build more than 1,200 primary schools in Nicaragua, Haiti, Malawi, Nepal and three West African countries. These schools have more than 150,000 students attending. Prior to fundraising and the building of the school, Keur Yorro had one temporary classroom. With the new school built, buildOn’s Enroll Program
will work to get more students in school and increase the number of teachers and grade levels taught. The village of Keur Yorro is a community of approximately 250 people located in the Fatick region. The district thanks the students for their incredible efforts and dedication. A special thanks is also owed to teacher Charlotte Hayes for working with the group all year to help raise the money.
