t was a morning of new beginnings as 249 incoming freshmen attended Wantagh High School’s ninth grade orientation. The freshmen received a warm welcome, introductions to the administration and guidance counselors, words of wisdom from upper classmen, and an opportunity to sign up for school clubs. Principal Carolyn Breivogel told the students she was excited about what they are about to bring to the high school community.

Of Deadlines & Days Off What to write... It’s 8 p.m. on deadline day, and I have no column prepared. Nothing exciting going on, no inspiration to speak of, nothing. Makes for stimulating reading, right? Well, I am preparing to go away on vacation, so that’s something. But in the midst of finishing up and making sure all the loose ends are taken care of, I somehow lost the inspiration for my own column along the way. Not that I often spend much time contemplating it, but I at least have the option
of putting a little more thought into it. Today, not so much. Vacations are funny like that. You spend so many extra hours preparing to go away that, by the time you get to where you’re going, it hardly seems worth the effort. Shouldn’t the days leading up to a get-away be somewhat calming too? And don’t even get me started on the headache that awaits once you return from any kind of lengthy break. Piles of mail, inboxes overflowing with unread messages, tons of voicemails… Ah, but to forget about it all for a day or
two, to be completely disconnected from the world – no phones, no e-mails, no computers, no interruptions. Just peace and quiet and relaxation. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Let me know the next time you have a vacation like that. Really. I’d like to hear if anyone truly “gets away from it all” anymore. It doesn’t seem like it, but hey, maybe I’m in the minority. Maybe someone out there has discovered the great secret to dropping out of the rat race. We all have to come back to reality eventually. But let’s at least try to make the break worthwhile.

Whether students purchase lunch from school or bring lunch from home, there are ways to guarantee a more diverse offering and better nutrition. Here are some guidelines to follow. • Offer nutrient-dense foods. Foods should contribute to the daily recommended amounts of protein, iron, calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. Provide a selection of foods, such as lean protein, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, that will give children the nutrients they need. Nutrient-dense foods also help kids feel fuller, longer. • Limit fat intake. Avoid foods that do not get their
fat from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. Saturated fats can lead to obesity and clogged arteries. The American Heart Association recommends kids get no more than 25 to 35 percent of their calories from fat. Fish, nuts and olives are healthy fat sources. • Let kids choose some of their food. Allow kids to pick some of the healthy foods they will be eating. Giving kids a say in their diets will make them more likely to enjoy their lunches and cut back on snack foods. Eating meals regularly will keep energy levels up during school and make kids less likely to reach for unhealthy snacks to fill hunger gaps. • Make small changes that add up. Switching from white bread to whole grain breads, and opting for low-fat dairy products instead of full-fat dairy products can make a world

Giving children a healthy lunch and then packing a sugar-filled, high-calorie drink negates your efforts. Calories from beverages can quickly add up. Water is always the best option for a healthy drink. Low-fat milk and real fruit juice consumed in moderation also make healthy alternatives to sugary beverages. Beatrice Brown, a senior at John F. Kennedy High School, was recently selected to participate in the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) All-National High School Concert Band. Brown, who plays the flute, is the first student from Kennedy to be selected for the honor
and the first instrumental student selected in the district’s history. “I’m incredibly proud of her,” said Walter Avellaneda, the director of bands at Kennedy. “It’s a great accomplishment for the program to have such a talented student represent the school. Bea is one of the hardest working musicians here.” Brown has performed at Carnegie Hall and was a member of the All-State ensemble last year. She also plays in the school’s wind ensemble, pit band, pep band and jazz band. Outside of school, Brown plays flute for the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra, which is comprised of student musicians from all over Long Island.
As a result of the recognition, Brown will be performing with other selected students across the country at the Grand Ole Opry House in Nashville, Tenn., on October 29th. NAfME is a large arts education organization that advocates for music education at the local, state and federal level. It provides resources for teachers, parents and administrators, including professional development and special events. The association has existed since 1907, ensuring that students have access to comprehensive and highquality music instruction. Its resources have also been used in the development of the national standards for arts education.

It was a morning of new beginnings as 249 incoming freshmen attended Wantagh High School’s ninth grade orientation. The freshmen received a warm welcome, introductions to the administration and guidance counselors, words of wisdom from upper classmen and an opportunity to sign up for school clubs. Principal Carolyn Breivogel told the students that she was excited about what they are about to bring to the high school community. “Today the day belongs to you,” she said. “We want to be sure that all of you
get started on the right foot. Assistant Principal James Brown talked about transitioning to high school and his expectations for the students. He explained that their actions will follow them through the rest of their lives and encouraged them to think before speaking or acting and to be sure that what they say or do is just and fair. In addition, Supervisor of Discipline Eric Haruthunian went over “house keeping rules,” such as discipline, wardrobe, attendance and cutting classes. Student-athletes Tori Flaherty and Chris Taibi
and student government representative Kaitlyn von Runnen encouraged the new students to try out for sports and become involved in the school’s various clubs and organizations. After guidance counselors distributed class schedules, students were invited to tour the building, find their classrooms and practice opening their lockers. A club fair was held in the courtyard so that the ninth-graders could join organizations like Mathletes, Model Congress, Theatre Club, Literacy Society and many more.

But parents should take steps to ensure that youngsters always heed the following school bus safety guidelines. • Wait for the bus in a safe location that is away from traffic, ideally staying in a designated school bus stop until the bus arrives. • Dress for optimal visibility, especially in inclement weather when it can be difficult for the school bus driver and other motorists to see pedestrians. • Do not board the bus until it comes to a complete stop. Wait for the driver to open the door, which engages the “Stop” sign for oncoming motorists. • Use the handrail and enter the bus in an orderly manner. • Promptly find a seat, sit down and buckle the safety belt if there is one available. Students assigned seats on the bus should take their
seat without making a fuss. • Keep backpacks and other belongings out of the center aisle. Store them under your seat or on your lap. • Remain seated at all times while the bus is in motion. • Keep arms, hands, legs, and heads inside of the bus at all times. • Always follow the driver’s instructions and avoid situations that will cause driver distraction. • Wait for the bus to stop completely before standing up or attempting to exit. • Exit the bus in an orderly manner, without pushing fellow passengers. • Only cross the street in front of the bus. It is very difficult for the driver to see students crossing behind the bus. • Wait for the driver to check traffic before crossing the street and be on the lookout for inattentive motorists.
Students learn lessons each day. While many of these lessons pertain to their coursework, kids pick up much more than book smarts from school, where kids first learn to cultivate friendships and build lasting relationships. In addition to a new curriculum, new teachers and new schedules, kids also might make new friends once a school year begins. While some familiar faces carry through from grade to grade, chances are youngsters will meet new students who will soon become good friends. While many kids find it easy to make new friends, others might need some assistance so they can make the most of opportunities to socialize and form friendships that might last a lifetime. • Offer opportunities for socialization. Children should be given the opportunity to explore friendships outside of the classroom where peer pressure might not be so prevalent. Establish a carpool or invite a classmate over for a play date. Unstructured time to play or get to know each other is a great way to
establish friendships. Invite new children over each time to see which friendships are the strongest, but make sure you are not pushing a friendship on your child. • Discover common interests. One of the quickest ways to build friendships is through common interests, says Kirk Martin, a behavioral therapist and author. Encourage your child to join a club or sports group where he or she can meet other kids with similar interests. Sometimes finding reasons to talk other children is the most difficult step to making new friends. Sharing a common interest removes this barrier. • Teach proper manners. Children who are polite, well-mannered and know how to follow direction are better equipped to attract friends. Children who misbehave may be shunned by other kids and their parents who do not want the hassle of an unruly youngster coming over to play. Respectful children who are honest, trustworthy and capable of sustaining eye contact and making small talk may find it easy to make friends.
• Take the friendship lead. As parents, you can improve your child’s chances of making friends by getting friendly with their classmates’ parents. Levittown School District Band Director Joseph Romano took center stage as a guest conductor for the U.S. Army 42nd Infantry Division Band during a concert at the Lakeside Theatre at Eisenhower Park on August 13th. As part of the band’s summer concert series, the musical group invites an area band director to conduct a piece in its program. Romano, who directs the MacArthur High
School band, conducted Sousa’s Washington Post March. Romano explained that being a guest conductor was a great honor. He has always been a strong supporter of the military, especially military music organizations. In the past, Romano has invited military music groups to perform concerts at MacArthur High School. Romano also noted that it is an interesting coincidence that General Douglas
MacArthur, for whom the high school is named, was instrumental in forming the 42nd Infantry Division of the U. S. Army in 1917 at Camp Mills on Long Island. “It was a great honor to conduct the fine musicians in the 42nd Infantry Band and an even greater honor to get to know the members,” Romano stated. “Our military is truly something special.” Photo provided by: J.P. Walk For Autism Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto announced that the Town will host its Seventh Annual “Walk for Autism” to benefit the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism & Developmental Disabilities. The event will be held rain or shine on Sunday, September 21st, at John J. Burns Town Park, Merrick Road in Massapequa. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the walk will begin at 11 a.m., followed by a tailgate party. “Today, one in 88 individuals will be diagnosed with autism, a complex neurobiological disorder that typically lasts throughout a person’s lifetime,” Supervisor Venditto said. “There is no known cause or cure for autism. Many treatments and therapies have become
available since the disorder became more visible in the mainstream press, but doctors have yet to make any true conclusions on how to reverse the diagnosis.” Now in its seventh year, the Town’s walk has helped spread the word about autism and help those inflicted with the condition. The event benefits the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism, a dedicated facility located on AHRC Nassau’s Brookville Campus and affiliated with the North Shore Long Island Jewish Health System. “The center focusses on building awareness to the issue of autism while offering families comprehensive assessments, family support and updated information on autism research,” Supervisor
Venditto said. Registration is $10 for individual walkers or $25 for a family (up to five walkers). Each registered walker will receive a t-shirt and admission to the tailgate party. Many students take the bus to school twice a day, five days a week. Approximately 26 million elementary and secondary school children ride school buses daily in the United States, and the U.S. Department of Transportation says more than 50 percent of all K-12 students in the country ride yellow school buses, traveling approximately 4 billion miles each year. The vast majority of these miles are traveled without incident. In fact, according to the National Safety Council, the national school bus accident rate is 0.01 per 100 miles traveled, compared to 0.96 for other passenger vehicles, which makes school buses considerably safer than other passenger vehicles. SAND SCULPTING CHAMPS - Supervisor Kate Murray and the MaliBlue Oyster Bar welcomed residents of all ages to the second annual Seaside Sand-Sculpting Spectacular Competition at Town Park at Malibu.
