Mepham Kickline Recognized As National Champions The Wellington C. Mepham High School varsity kickline team from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District was presented with a national championship sign by the Town of Hempstead on Aug. 17. During the weekend

PSEG Long Island to Reimburse Customers for Food and Medicines PSEG Long Island is expanding its claims policy due to the COVID-19 pandemic so that customers whose electrical service was interrupted by Tropical Storm Isaias for at least 72 hours can be reimbursed for spoiled food and medication. The tropical storm knocked out power for more than 420,000 customers on Long Island and in the Rockaways, making it the
most destructive storm since Superstorm Sandy. “We recognize that losing power in August, together with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, was a hardship for many of our customers,” PSEG Long Island President and COO Daniel Eichhorn said. “Given the unique combination of circumstances, we believe the right thing to do is to expand our claims process
to ease the burden on the customers most impacted by Tropical Storm Isaias.” PSEG Long Island will reimburse residential customers up to $250 and commercial customers up to $5,000 for food spoilage if their service was interrupted for 72 hours or longer between Aug. 4, and Aug. 12, 2020 because of Tropical Storm Isaias. For residential customers,
food spoilage claims of $150 or less must include an itemized list. Food spoilage claims over $150 must include an itemized list and proof of loss (for example: cash register tapes, store or credit card receipts, canceled checks or photographs of spoiled items). Separately, customers will be reimbursed for losses, up to a maximum of $300, for prescription medications
that spoiled due to lack of refrigeration. Customers must provide an itemized list of the medications and proof of loss (for example: pharmacy prescription label or pharmacy receipt identifying the medicine). Commercial customers applying for reimbursement must supply an itemized list of spoiled food and proof of loss (invoices, inventory lists, bank statements).
Customers can apply for reimbursement at www. psegliny.com/claims. The reimbursement claims cannot be processed over the phone. Customers will have until Sept. 16, 2020 to file claims. Reimbursement is expected to take up to 60 business days from when a proper claim form is completed and submitted to PSEG Long Island.

While this academic year might look a little different from previous years, there are still many ways to save on the essentials your family needs. In the wake of the COVID-19 outbreak, many schools hastily transitioned from traditional in-person learning to remote learning. This transition posed new and unique challenges to educators as well as students and their parents. One of the biggest challenges posed by remote learning was keeping students connected to their teachers and their classmates, not all of whom had readily available access to devices that could facilitate such connections. In recognition of that challenge, school systems worked to procure devices for students only to be confronted by another challenge: low bandwidth. According to Microsoft, bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred over an internet connection per second. Low bandwidth can compromise students’ ability to stay connected to their virtual classrooms. In an effort to help
students overcome that challenge, Microsoft offers the following tips on how educators, students and parents can manage low bandwidth during remote learning sessions. • Reduce reliance on video during class sessions. Turning video cameras off during live class sessions can help to overcome the challenges posed by low bandwidth, as live video is a key contributor to excessive use of bandwidth. If video must be used, encourage students to turn off their cameras when they are not speaking. • Use pre-recorded content. Pre-recording content enables students to stream video over the internet, saving those with low bandwidth the hassle of downloading large video files to their computers. Microsoft recommends educators who prerecord content for their students to stream to instruct those students to use class time to complete assignments.
Educators can make themselves available via chat to answer questions students may have about their assignments. • Avoid video-based assignments. It can be difficult for students with low bandwidth to send very large files, such as videos. Educators can help students avoid that issue by not requiring them to submit videos as part of their assignments.

• When should I get my child’s eyes checked? The American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend having vision checked regularly, starting in infancy. Not only will an eye exam help provide the clear vision necessary for a child to see the blackboard and work on digital devices without straining, but this essential visit can also detect a broad range of issues related to eye health and overall wellness. Kids -- and adults for that matter -- don’t always know they are experiencing a vision problem. As a result, they may be compensating for vision issues by turning their head to the side, squinting or holding reading material up close or far away. • What information should I share at the appointment? Be sure to share any behaviors or symptoms with your child’s doctor that could be related to eye health. You should also mention all the activities and sports your child participates in which may be impacted by vision.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.
To accomplish their mission, they focus on pressing these goals:

Prevention: Support, encouragement and education about a healthy lifestyle. Research: To promote legislation to increase funding for environmental research and provide funding for specific breast cancer projects. Education: Providing up-to-date information through their website, newsletter, information packets and education seminars. They offer adult and student awareness programs designed to help participants increase their awareness of Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Services: To offer breast and gynecological cancer patients services paid for and facilitated by WIBCC via the “Lend A Helping Hand” program. Lend A Helping Hand: The non-surgical modalities of treatment for breast cancer chemotherapy and radiation leave the patient in the need of a “Helping Hand”. Awareness: Breast Cancer is survivable. Awareness of the treatments available is key to beating it.
As like many other non-profit organizations, the WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www.johnscrazysocks. com, when you enter the charity code FGWIBCC20. St. Jude Walk/Run On Long Island Transforms To Virtual Event In celebration of Child-hood Cancer Awareness Month, supporters of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® from across the country, including the Long Island community, will be participating in the virtual St. Jude Walk/Run September 26th. This year participants can walk, run and fundraise at their own pace and
distance in their own neighborhoods. In addition, the St. Jude Walk/Run mobile app, is available in the Apple app store and on Google Play, to provide a unique experience to participants that includes a virtual tour of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and some engagement opportunities using augmented reality.
