The seven-member team programmed a robot called the PhoenixBot to assist with exercise. The We Connect the Dots Conference is a two-week educational venue designed to give students a vision of potential careers.

Summer’s Swan Song By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And there it is. Not two days into September, and the autumn zealots are out in force, proclaiming the “end” of summer to be upon us. Never mind the fact that the calendar still calls for a full three weeks of the season. Nope. Pack away the bathing suits, close up the pools, pay no mind to the warm radiance of the sun. Fall has arrived. Clearly, I’m not thrilled by this rush to transition. While I can appreciate the glory of autumn in all its splendor, I’m pretty sure that I recall there being many who spent the better part of last winter counting down the days to summer. What happened? Had
your fill of beautiful beach days? Grown tired of sunlit evenings and family barbecues in the backyard? I can understand the school year dictating some sort of routine for those still beholden to a bell schedule; but for the rest of us, there is simply no excuse to not savor these remaining weeks. “Summer vacation” may be over, but for those of us who haven’t been fortunate to take advantage of it, this is the prime time for long weekends and late afternoons spent soaking in the last rays of sunshine at the beach. The best part? While everyone else is off returning to his/her regularly scheduled
programs, the rest of us are left to enjoy the solitude. Not a bad tradeoff. If there is anything we have learned in recent years, it is that Mother Nature has infinitely more impact on our lives than the calendar year. We have had hurricanes at Halloween, snow for Thanksgiving and 70º days leading up to Christmas. You never can tell. But, in this case, the calendar says summer and the weather concurs. Savor it. Grab your bathing suit, pick up a few hot dogs and kick back in a lounge chair. Autumn will wait. In fact, I’m pretty sure it hasn’t even arrived yet.

Twelve Skydivers (mostly Rotarians) raised many thousands of dollars in sponsorships for Rotary Jump for Life, program, so as to fund pediatric surgery for indigent children this past Saturday August 22nd. This wonderful and unique event was deemed a huge success, and many children will receive the precious Gift of Life, because of this. Gift of life’s mission
is to provide hope to children from developing countries with heart disease regardless of their gender, creed, or national origin, by supporting autonomous Gift of Life programs in their efforts to care for these children in need, and coordinating the development of sustainable pediatric cardiac surgery and aftercare programs in select countries, through the empowerment of their healthcare professionals.
The Gift of Life Program, which began in 1975 on Long Island, is today a worldwide Rotary International Service Program. Its primary purpose is to help those needy children who require corrective heart surgery secure another lease on life through the miracle of heart surgery in a Gift of Life Participating Hospital.

This year’s 5K run and dog walk was made possible through a charitable partnership with United Water and hosted by Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano. One thing that has definitely puzzled my head is why the school year can seem to be so cyclic. It reaches the point where I am occasionally sickened by it. How does one make each day exciting? How can one feel motivated enough to awaken from bed and aspire? “Aspire to do what?” you might ask. Aspire to distinguish this day from others and consider it memorable. This will undoubtedly break that cycle and in fact inscribe a new tale into the course of one’s life. Distinction is key. Distinction is golden. If you need to ask how you can perform such a task, I will happily recommend what to do. These have certainly assisted me in differentiating one day from others. Firstly, be open to listening to others. If you shut out yourself from the rest of the world, you’ll feel confined and limited. If someone comes up to you and asks if you want to hang out with them - take that invitation. And if you are stuck on something and offered help, accept that person’s advice and see. Just see! Who knows? You might just bridge the gap between the first part and the second part.
The second part is to make more friends. You know, amigos, companions, even acquaintances. Call them whatever you’d like, as long as it’s appropriate. Just obtain a few. Also, be sure that they are true friends. By “true,” I mean that they are spending time with you because they are fond of you as a person. If they are with you only because they envy you for some of your possessions, then they are not true friends. Following the first two parts will lead one to the third and final part, which is to make light. Express levity whenever and wherever you can. Make jokes at the appropriate instances. This is helpful because one is always going to withstand pessimistic days and experience exuberant days. See? These three steps can aid in making school days and any day more excitingly different. If this has motivated you to take action and get on top of the cycle, give yourself small applause and two big thumbs up! Now, this all may sound well and good; however, only you can make it happen! So get up, vow to alter the chain of events for your greater benefit, and distinguish!

Learn how to increase your fruit and veggie consumption on a budget. Make shopping a fun and easy activity for you and your kids. • Week 2 – “My Glass is Why” – Sugary drinks can cost you your energy and your health, don’t let others sugarcoat your future and let’s make sugary drinks a thing of the past without feeling thirsty. • Week 3 – “My Taste is Why” – Most adults eat more than double the amount of sodium recommended by the AHA. Tame your taste buds by reducing the sodium in your foods and on your plate. The Levittown School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Michael Scaduto as assistant principal of MacArthur High School, effective August 17th.
Scaduto joins Levittown from the High School for Construction Trades, Engineering and Architecture in Queens, where he served as assistant principal. He also
served as dean of August Martin High School in Jamaica. In addition, he taught physical education during his tenure at both high schools. Scaduto holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management information systems, a master’s degree in K-12 physical education, and certification in advanced studies in educational administration from Hofstra University. The Town of Hempstead’s Senior I.D. Program is coming to a senior center near you! Supervisor Kate Murray and Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad have coordinated seven events in the month of September where golden-aged residents can obtain a free senior identification card. As many seniors have physical ailments that can potentially put them at risk in certain situations, a town Senior I.D. Card can help medical technicians quickly determine how to treat a particular person. The card includes a person’s name, description, photograph, doctor and family emergency contact numbers and other vital information that may be useful in the event of an emergency. “Obtaining a Town of Hempstead Senior I.D. Card is a quick and easy way that seniors can protect themselves in the

STEAMing Ahead Brandon Smith, an incoming freshman at Levittown’s Division Avenue High School, helped bring his team to a first-place win at the We Connect the Dots Conference at the New York Institute of Technology this summer. The seven-member team programmed a robot called the PhoenixBot to assist
with exercise. The We Connect the Dots Conference is a twoweek educational venue designed to give students a vision of potential careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics, otherwise known as STEAM. In addition to programming a robot, the teams of students from

Woman of Distinction New District Role
Congratulations to Nassau BOCES Board District Clerk Deborah Coates on her being named a Women of Distinction for her tireless work to make her community a better place. The award was presented by Assemblyman Tom McKevitt on August 8th at the Farmingdale
Public Library. A public education advocate, Ms. Coates served as president and vice president of the East Meadow UFSD Board of Education for three decades. Ms. Coates is an active community member, serving as vice president of the Community Association of Stewart
Avenue and as a member and former chairperson of the Nassau County Jail Advisory Committee. She is also a member of the East Meadow Chamber of Commerce and co-chairs several committees for the East Meadow Kiwanis Club.

effective August 12th. Smith replaces chairperson Mauro Chiti, who retired at the end of the 2014-2015 school year. A Levittown alumnus, Smith has spent the past 25 years teaching
physical education at Division Avenue. He has also coached both the boys varsity lacrosse and varsity football teams. As chairperson, Smith will continue to teach physical education. Smith holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Roanoke College in Virginia and a master’s degree in physical education from Stony Brook University. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is presenting Bradstock XXII, a two-day festival featuring live music and poetry on Saturday, September 5th, from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 6 from noon to 9 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the camp’s programs for children and young adults with special needs. The festival also has a personal connection for the camp’s Director, Bridget Costello, whose late brother-in-law Kevin “K.C.” Cowan performed with his band, K.C. and The Love Drops, at Bradstock every year until his passing in October 2011. Since moving the event to Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck grounds four years ago, Bradstock has raised more than $42,000 for the camp and its programs, which includes the music presentations held in K.C.’s honor. From these funds, Jack Licitra, a Bradstock XXII performer, hosted twice-a-week music sessions at the camp this summer. Now in its 22nd year, Bradstock features Long Island’s best Americana,
bluegrass, blues, reggae, jam funk rock and jazz musicians. This year’s performers include Cassandra House, Funkin’ A, Miles to Dayton, Jellyband, Jerry McDonald, Ed Travers Band, Shecky and the Twangtones, Soundswell, David Amram, David Bromberg, The Falco Brothers, The Electrix, Kristen Maxwell and Hymn For Her. There is also a Poetry Stage on Sunday, where the area’s finest and most diverse poets will perform, as well as a Folk and Songwriters’ stage featuring the best local acoustic musical talent and the all new Flower Power Stage to allow for additional acts. Pre-sale tickets are available online for $50 per day, or $90 for both days; tickets can also be purchased at the gate for $60 (cash only) each day. Festival organizers are also offering a Platinum Ticket Package online in advance of the event, which includes admission to both days of the festival, a Bradstock T-shirt, backstage access and more. While the festival will try to accommodate sameday camping requests, space is limited, so early registration is strongly recommended. All ticket and camping prices are listed as the pre-tax values. There will also be a 5K Trail Fun Run on Sunday, September 6th, open free of charge to any ticketholders. The race begins at 8:30 a.m. and takes participants through the wooded grounds of Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck. An Awards Ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. and all runners will receive a Bradstock XXII mug. Consumers Should Take Advantage Of Free Credit Reports ( N A P S I ) — T h e Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) found that many consumers are overwhelmed by the amount of information available to help them learn more about the financial services marketplace. At the same time, the CFPB found one of the most popular resources offered is information about credit reports. The credit bureaus have found that information about credit reports is popular as well. “Each year, there are over 25 million free credit reports provided
to consumers,” said Stuart K. Pratt, president and CEO of the Consumer Data Industry Association. “And while that’s a significant number, there are still a considerable number of consumers who aren’t exercising their option to get their report. According to a survey done by VantageScore and the Consumer Federation of America, 37 percent of consumers have never obtained a copy of their credit report,” he added. Consumers can get a free credit report from each of the three nationwide credit
bureaus, Equifax, Experian and Trans-Union, once a year by going to www. annualcreditreport.com. The process is easy and enables consumers to have real-time access to their credit reports. “Many people get annual medical checkups. We encourage consumers to be just as conscientious when it comes to their personal finances; get an annual credit checkup by obtaining your free credit report,” added Pratt.
