Helping Hand Rescue Mission www.helpinghandsrescuemission.org

Helping Hand Rescue Mission(HHRM) is a local non-profit organization that is based in Huntington, but serves people all over our island. Their mission is to improve the spiritual and temporal conditions of the children, families and people of the communities they serve by providing excellent service to all who come, whether they be rich or poor, high or low social status. They are here to love, to serve and to give. This non-profit was founded in 1965 by Reverend J.A. Gaines, his wife, Reverend Rose Marie Gaines, and her mother, Florence E. Meringola. After witnessing local poverty conditions first hand, they invested everything that they had with the view that if they could help even one person it was worth the investment! They worked very hard and sacrificed much to build a strong community and leave a great legacy to be carried on. Their prayer was that the Helping Hand Rescue Mission would remain a “lighthouse” in our community. 56 years later, their work continues under the direction of the founders’ daughter, Rev. Kimberly Gaines-Gambino, who functions as the President/Pastor of this organization. She has also served as Pastor of Half Hollow Community Church in Dix Hills from 2011-2019, however she resigned from that position in January of 2020 to devote more of her time to the work of HHRM. She is a wife to her husband Andrew and mom & stepmom to five amazing kids. How does HHRM serve others? Feeding The Hungry: HHRM serves approximately 200-300 families per week with non-perishable items and fresh produce, fruit, meat, eggs, milk and bread. Since March 21, 2020, they have given out over 27,000 food bags to people in need on Long Island. HHRM partners with many schools, organizations, temples, churches, youth organizations, civic organizations, clubs, businesses, and

the many individuals and families donating to our pantry to gather food for the hungry. School Supply Distribution: Every child deserves to have the supplies they need for their education, feel confident in a room with their peers and be prepared for their school year. This non-profit gathers and distributes school supplies to local children that are in need. Baby Blessings: Baby Blessings is a part of HHRM that focuses on providing families with children under 3 years old with diapers, baby clothes, other baby supplies and a brunch! Baby Blessings is hosted at Huntington Assembly of God every third Tuesday of the month. HHRM is so thankful to partner with Family Service League, the Allied Foundation and Huntington Assembly of God to make Baby Blessings possible. Community Closet: HHRM runs something called the Community Closet, which provides new and gently used seasonallyappropriate clothing to anyone in need during it’s hours of operation. Appropriate clothing can be a genuinely difficult expense for families, especially since most have children that are always growing. Helping Hand Rescue Mission also holds various other outreach programs, some of which are seasonal. There are many ways you can volunteer with, donate to or receive help from HHRM. Each September 11, communities across the United States commemorate the lives lost during the 2001 terrorist attacks that took place on American soil. On September 11, 2001, four commercial airplanes were hijacked and sent to various targets in the United States. Two planes crashed into the towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, one plane crashed into the U.S. Pentagon Building near Washington, D.C., and a fourth plane was intercepted from the hijackers and crash-landed in rural Pennsylvania. In the immediate aftermath of the attacks, President George W. Bush declared Friday, September 14, 2001 as a National Day of Prayer and Remembrance for the Victims of the terrorist attacks. But many people felt there should be an annual event dedicated to preserving the memory of the victims and the heroism of the first responders. A bill to make September 11 a national day of mourning was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives on October 25, 2001. The bill passed the Senate unanimously. On September 11, 2002, the country recognized the first Patriot Day. On this day, the U.S. flag is flown at half-mast. In addition, a moment of silence beginning at 8:46 a.m. is observed to correspond with the attacks. While not a federal holiday — schools and businesses remain open — memorial ceremonies are held for the 2,977 victims, including an annual reading of names of the people who lost their lives.

Approximately one hundred names have recently been added to the cemetery’s September 11th Memorial. The memorial, a beautiful black marble sculpture that is the center piece of a specially designated area of the cemetery which was set aside for victims of the terrorist attacks, was erected in 2003. The memorial currently displays the names of 414 individuals who were victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center. Newly added names include both those who passed away on 9/11 and individuals who worked at Ground Zero and succumbed to related illnesses, bringing the number of those to be remembered on the memorial on the day of the Mass to approximately 500 in total. “As we mark the 20th year since 9-11, we know that many people remain profoundly impacted. This special Mass led by Bishop Barres is an important event on this solemn day. It is important that we remember the victims of the attacks, those who rushed to their aid and all who selflessly gave of themselves afterwards at Ground Zero, suffering years of chronic health conditions and related illnesses. Our memorial wall at Holy Rood Cemetery is a place of solace,

reflection and tribute to the lives that were tragically lost. We welcome all to visit the memorial at any time, including joining us at this remembrance mass,” said Richard Bie, CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. Queen of Peace is the first new Catholic cemetery to open on Long Island in decades. The chapel at Queen of Peace Cemetery is under construction at this time and is expected to be completed and open to visitors by the summer of 2022.

Among the more indelible images to emerge on September 11, 2001 was the sight of two planes crashing into the North and South Towers of the World Trade Center. Still photos and video footage of those planes flying into the Twin Towers were the first images of the attacks many Americans saw, and no one who watched events unfold that morning will ever forget those images. Though both the North and South Towers fell on that day, today the site where each tower once stood is a serene retreat in the bustling lower Manhattan neighborhood that was shaken to its core on the day of the attacks. The 9/11 Memorial was designed by architect Michael Arad and landscape architect Peter Walker. The 9/11 Memorial and Museum notes that Arad and Walker’s proposal was chosen in a design competition that featured 5,201 submissions from 63 countries. The 9/11 Memorial is located on the western side of the formal World Trade Center where the Twin Towers once stood. Two enormous reflecting pools are part of the Memorial Plaza, which is where the North and South Towers once stood. The pools feature the two largest man-made waterfalls in North America. Around the edges of the pools, the names of people who were killed in the 9/11 attacks in New York, the Pentagon, on Flight 93, and in the 1993 bombing at the World Trade Center are etched in bronze. In recognition of the crash sites, 400 swamp white oak trees were selected from nurseries located in New York, Pennsylvania and near Washington, D.C. These trees are located throughout the Memorial Plaza, providing a peaceful respite separate from the surrounding city. The Memorial Plaza also includes one Callery pear tree. That tree was discovered at Ground Zero weeks after the attacks and it was severely damaged. The tree, now known as the Survivor Tree, was nursed back to health by members of the New York City Parks and Recreation Department and returned to the World Trade Center site in 2010, where it still stands as an enduring symbol of resilience and perseverance. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is holding a remembrance Mass for families of victims, first responders and Ground Zero workers as part of the 20th year remembrance of the September 11th 2001 Terrorist Attacks on America. The Mass will be led by Bishop John O. Barres, of the Diocese of Rockville Centre. This special service will be held outside at the Cemetery of the Holy Rood’s 9/11 Memorial. The Mass will take place on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2021, beginning at 1 p.m. Attendees are asked to arrive by 12:30 p.m. Family members and members of the Long Island Community and the public are welcome and encouraged to attend. Seating will be limited, and not guaranteed. Recognizing that some family members may be elderly and/or need assistance, those attending are urged to plan in advance and consider arriving early. Parking may be some distance from the September 11th Memorial where the outdoor Mass will be held. Attendees are asked to RSVP by Saturday, Sept. 4, 2021 by completing the RSVP form on www.CCLongIsland. org or to email Memorials@ CCLongIsland.org with their name and the number of attendees.

Members of the Lee Road Elementary School Student Council in the Levittown Public Schools were recently recognized by the New York State Assembly for their outstanding participation in the Baxter’s Pet Food Drive. Led by club advisers Jennifer Lores and Tina Vrachnas, the student council members facilitated the drive and collected items such as pet toys and canned food. The goal was to help

At 9:37 a.m. on September 11, 2001, five hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the Pentagon in Arlington County, Virginia. All 53 passengers and six crew members perished in the crash, and an additional 125 military and civilian personnel on the ground were killed in the fire caused by the crash. The hijacking of Flight 77 was part of the broader attack on 9/11, which remains the deadliest terrorist attack in world history. The Pentagon Memorial was created to honor the 184 people whose lives were lost at the Pentagon on 9/11, as well as their families and all those who sacrifice to protect and preserve the freedom of Americans. The design of the Pentagon Memorial was developed by architects Julie Beckman and Keith Kaseman. Their

design was chosen from 1,100 submissions. The Pentagon Memorial sits on two acres of land just outside where Flight 77 struck the building. The memorial includes 184 benches that are dedicated to each of the victims. The benches are organized in a timeline of their ages, stretching from the youngest victim, 3-yearDana Falkenberg, to the oldest, 71-year-old John Yamnicky. Each bench is engraved with a victim’s name and arches over a shallow reflecting pool of water, lit from below. The benches for the passengers who were aboard the plane at the time of the crash are positioned so visitors will face the sky when reading the victim’s name. The benches dedicated to the victims who were inside the building are positioned so their names and the Pentagon are in the

same view. A curved wall known as the Age Wall also is a significant part of the memorial. The wall increases in height from 3 inches to 71 inches to represent the ages of the victims. Eighty-five paperbark maple trees were clustered throughout the memorial, and these trees feature foliage that changes to orange and red each fall. The trees will eventually grow to 30 feet, providing a canopy of shade over the memorial. The Pentagon Memorial is free and open seven days a week year-round, though visitors are urged to contact the Memorial in advance due to potential restrictions or closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Honor America on Patriot Day September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crash-landed. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example. How To Honor First Responders Administration, 54 percent of active firefighting personnel are volunteers. Many of those volunteer firefighters work for underfunded departments that are in need of financial support. Donating to such departments is a great way to show first responders how much their efforts are appreciated. Donations may be used to purchase new equipment, upgrade existing facilities, provide vital training, and/or improve response times, the latter of which can increase the likelihood that firefighters make it through calls safe and sound.

• Back legislation to support wounded first responders. Many first responders suffer significant mental and physical injuries while on the job. Various nonprofit organizations help wounded first responders who may need to make modifications to their homes or purchase costly equipment to get through their daily lives. But nonprofit organizations cannot go it alone in support of wounded first responders. Citizens can do their part by promoting and voting for local, state and national legislation that makes it easy for wounded first responders to get the help • Donate to local fire departments. they need, when they need it. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 will call attention to the efforts of first responders on that day 20 years ago as well as the countless times since then that these brave men and women have served their communities. But first responders deserve vocal, year-round support. Make a concerted effort to thank policemen, firefighters, EMTs, nurses, and doctors in your community whenever you interact with them, and urge others to follow suit. First responders play a vital role in communities across the globe. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 can serve as a catalyst for communities to express their support for first responders.

The Flight 93 National Memorial At 10:03 a.m. on September 11, 2001, the last of four planes that were hijacked earlier that morning crashed into a field near the town of Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The people behind the 9/11 attacks later claimed the hijackers who commandeered the plane intended to crash it into the U.S. Capitol Building in Washington, D.C., but passengers and crew stormed the cockpit, prompting the hijackers to crash the plane into the field, which is less than 20 minutes’ flying time to Washington, D.C. The efforts of passengers and crew onboard Flight 93 were nothing short of heroic. Though everyone aboard the flight perished in the crash, the attack on the U.S. Capitol was thwarted, saving untold number of lives. All passengers and crew on board Flight 93 were awarded a Congressional Gold Medal on September 11, 2014. The Flight 93 National Memorial is located in Stonycreek Township in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, roughly two miles north of Shanksville. The memorial was opened to family members of the victims on September 10, 2015, and is now open to the public seven days a week, 365 days a year from sunrise to sunset, though visitors

are urged to contact the Memorial in advance due to potential restrictions or closures related to the COVID-19 pandemic. In September 2005, the Flight 93 Advisory Commission, which included family members of the victims as well as design and art professionals and

community and national leaders, chose a design proposal submitted by Paul Murdoch Architects and Nelson Byrd Woltz Architects from among 1,100 entries. The Flight 93 National Memorial includes the Tower of Voices, a 93-foottall musical instrument that holds 40

wind chimes, one to represent each of the 40 passengers and crew members who perished in the crash. The tower is located on an oval concrete plaza that includes two curved concrete benches facing the opening of the tower. Visitors to the Flight 93 National Memorial also can visit the Memorial Plaza. The Memorial Plaza features the Wall of Names, which is made up of 40 white polished marble stones inscribed with the names of the passengers and crew who were aboard Flight 93 on 9/11. The Memorial Plaza extends onequarter mile alongside the area where Flight 93 crashed. Visitors can walk along the Memorial Plaza and view the impact site, including a grove of eastern hemlock trees that were damaged by the crash. A gap in the tree line is still visible and serves as a lasting “scar” of the crash. This fall marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The attacks on September 11, 2001 remain the deadliest terror attacks in world history, claiming more than 2,900 lives and causing countless injuries and long-term health problems for tens of thousands of civilians and first responders. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 will no doubt evoke responses that span the emotional spectrum. Sadness may dominate such responses, but the anniversary of 9/11 also is a great time to reflect on the efforts of first responders. First responders played a vital role on 9/11, and many lost their lives and/or suffered long-term health consequences resulting from their selfless efforts to save innocent victims of the attacks. In the two decades since the 9/11 attacks, first responders have continued to make countless sacrifices to ensure their communities are safe and peaceful places to call home. The 20th anniversary of 9/11 is a great time to recognize the efforts of first responders and honor them for all they do.

Clavin, Blakeman & Carini Join With Legislator Rhoads To Present Wantagh’s Own Olympic Silver Medalist With ‘Key To The Town’ Supervisor Don Clavin, Councilman Bruce Blakeman and Councilman Chris Carini joined with Town Clerk Kate Murray, Receiver Jeanine Driscoll and Legislator Steve Rhoads to salute Olympian Andrew Capobianco, who grew up in Wantagh and spent much of his time as a youth at Hempstead Town’s pools prior to his training to become a world-class diver. During the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Capobianco secured the Silver Medal competing in the Men’s Synchronized Diving 3-meter Springboard Competition. Capobianco, visiting Long Island after his return from Tokyo, received a hero’s welcome from proud neighbors at the Mandalay

School, the Wantagh elementary school that he once attended. “We are proud to welcome the Town of Hempstead’s own Andrew Capobianco on his amazing achievement of becoming an Olympic silver medalist,” Clavin said. “The key to the town signifies his link to our township during his childhood and to his family, and we hope he utilizes this key as a symbol that he is welcome back here anytime.” “We salute Andrew Capobianco with a hero’s welcome at the same elementary school he attended as a child here growing up in his hometown of Wantagh, right here in the Town of Hempstead” Carini said. “This young man has spent

his life training to get better and to become the world-class athlete that he is today.” Capobianco became the first seventh-grader to win the Nassau diving championship while competing for Wantagh High School in 2012. He broke the county record in the process and did the same the following year. He moved to North Carolina in 2013, and continued on his legendary run as an All American at Indiana University. “We wish Andrew and his family all the best,” Clavin said. “His future is bright and we are cheering him on to break more records, compete in more national and international competitions and a return to the Olympics in 2024!”

Program Bridges Gap Between Middle And High School Eighth grade students in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have been participating in a fun, educational program to prepare for the upcoming academic and social challenges in high school. As part of the fourweek Summer Bridge Program, 16 students are engaged in service learning, mindfulness, social interaction and teambuilding activities. “We see glimmers of positive energy and work ethic among many of the students,” said Mary Donnelly, the Summer Bridge Program coordinator and district English chairperson. “Students have already started opening up and building relationships with teachers, and a few students who indicated to us that they were afraid to come back to school already appear to have shaken off some of that anxiety.”

The Summer Bridge Program, which is now in its fifth year, has evolved over the years to adjust to the unique needs of students. They meet four days a week and participate in three, one hour-long instructional blocks – the Genius Hour, humanities, and math and science – as well as weekly special programming designed to increase their self-efficacy through service learning. During their Genius Hour, the students have delved into designing their own servicelearning projects to collect donations for local community organizations, including the BellmoreMerrick Community Cupboard, the Bideawee Animal Shelter, the Merrick Fire Department and the YMCA. Many students have moved on to their next independent reading novel in humanities, and they’ve been discussing the benefits of sleep and meditation and gaining

time management skills to improve their focus and concentration. As part of the math and science instruction, the students are practicing their calculator skills and learning about the importance of making hypotheses in science experiments. Throughout the summer, the students tour each of the three high schools they will attend in September to meet with building administrators in a small-group setting. In addition, they participated in an interactive paint lesson to create colorful cityscapes. The activity fostered an appreciation for creative expression, strengthened their fine motor skills, promoted confidence and emotional well-being, and improved their socialization skills. Donnelly said the students and staff were delighted to connect in person.

Sixth Annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk Set for Saturday, September 11th The Sixth Annual Outreach/John Brower, Jr. Foundation 5K Walk to raise funds and awareness about the opioid crisis on Long Island will be held Saturday, September 11th, beginning at 9 a.m. at Jones Beach Field 1. The event, which has raised more than $180,000 since its inception, is held annually to honor the memory of John Brower, Jr., who died in 2014 of an opioid overdose at age 25. Proceeds from

the walk support Outreach, the Queens and Long Island-based organization dedicated to helping teens and adults fight drug and alcohol addiction. John and Jody Brower, the parents of John Brower, Jr., formed the foundation in 2015 to raise awareness of drug abuse, and to help raise funds to end the opioid epidemic on Long Island. After being introduced to Outreach shortly after their son’s passing, the Browers

were impressed by the organization’s dedication to helping those struggling with addiction. They decided to target the foundation’s fundraising efforts to support life-saving programs at Outreach and other Long Island organizations.
