Shootout for Soldiers

ivision Avenue and MacArthur high school athletes took to Massapequa’s Field of Dreams on July 21st and July 22nd during the annual Shootout for Soldiers event to benefit the nation’s returning, wounded and homeless soldiers. Of the 96 participating teams, six Levittown teams played lacrosse in a 24-hour dual against other Long Island teams, helping to raise more than $133,000 for this important cause. Why Music Education Matters

Come the 2016-2017 school year, the music and arts budget in the Los Angeles Unified School District will reach its highest point in a dozen years. While that’s great news for students, it also illustrates the sad fact that arts and music programs have taken a considerable hit in recent decades, when arts education fell victim to budget cuts.

The benefits of music education extend far beyond getting kids to tap their toes. The National Association for Music Education lists the following benefits among the many reasons to support music education in schools:

Music training can improve hand-eye coordination. Studies have linked long-term music training to improved hand-eye coordination. That is likely connected to the motor skills children develop when playing musical instruments. Without those instruments, those motor skills may not develop as strongly.

Music training helps develop language skills. Studies have shown that music training contributes to the physical

A 2003 study commissioned by Chorus America found musicians are more likely than the average person to be involved in charity work as volunteers and donors. The NAfME also notes that music students may be more likely to exhibit empathy toward other cultures.

Music can improve selfesteem. In a study examining 117 fourth grade students attending public school in Montreal, a researcher at the University of Texas at Austin found that children who received piano lessons weekly for three years had higher self-esteem than children who were not given piano lessons during the same period. Neither group had participated in formal music instruction before the study, and students in both groups reported similar levels of self-esteem prior to participating in the study. Music education can enrich the lives of young students in a myriad of ways, potentially contributing to happier, more fulfilling lives.

Classroom Tech Trends to Watch Technology continues to evolve. With computers, tablets and smartphones, people of all ages are immersed in technology. According to the Pew Research Center, 56 percent of teens between the ages of 13 and 17 go online several times a day. Teens are not just relying on technology at home or while on the go, but they’re also doing so in school. Schools are now recognizing how influential mobile technologies are on students and how they can shape teaching and thinking. As a result, technology is now a major component in the

three through five have access to the same type of devices. Those numbers only continue to grow. Classroom Smartboards: Described as large tablets, smartboards have all but replaced chalkboards and even dry erase boards in many schools. Teachers can present lessons through the display, and students interact with the board to answer questions. Technology use in the classroom continues to grow as students and educators grow more accustomed to using technology in all aspects of life.

It’s that time of year again, that period of transition between seasons that seems to sneak up on us so quickly, yet stretch so luxuriously over the month of September, giving us the best of both worlds; the last lingering rays of summer sunshine mixed with the brisk chill of autumn air, ushering in pumpkin harvests and apple picking and all the holiday seasons which follow. What better time of year to appreciate all that nature has to offer, to savor the sunsets while looking ahead to the foliage, to dip your toes in the ocean one

last time while unpacking the fall wardrobe – and maybe shop for a few new accessories. It is a time for new beginnings, and for endings; for the start of the school year and the final days of summer leisure. Sure, every seasonal transition has its own benefits; but there is something about September… something uniquely magical about the twilight of summer and the golden glow of autumn that exceeds them all. This is why it’s so important to slow down and appreciate each day, each stage of metamorphosis, as they each bring their own special respective nuances.

So, enjoy these next three weeks, summer’s swan song; and look ahead to the autumnal equinox with equal anticipation. Each sunbeam, each fallen leaf… they each hold their own special significance. It is up to us to recognize these special gifts, and to hold onto them as the annual winter chill approaches, along with the chaos of the holiday season. This is the calm before the storms, the interlude of tranquility. Hope all my readers have had an enjoyable summer. Here’s to making more happy memories in the month to come…

Registration is underway for the 9th annual Supervisor’s Cup Golf Classic with 144 players and 20 alternates to be determined by lottery drawing. The Golf Classic is set for Wednesday, October 19th at the famed Lido Golf Course, one of Long Island’s legendary links. Supervisor Anthony Santino invites town residents 18 years of age and older to register for a day of great golf and great fun! “Town golfers are invited to tee-off in our annual tournament along the historic links at Lido,” commented Supervisor Santino. “A fun-filled round of golf in a beautiful setting accompanied by two meals, a host of prizes and tournament souvenirs makes for a true championship experience.” For an entry fee of $15, players will enjoy 18 holes of tournament golf, goody bag, a continental breakfast, motorized golf cart, on-course refreshments, souvenir hat and shirt, 19th Hole BBQ, awards and photographs. Tournament contests include a “Four Player Scramble,” “Men’s & Women’s Closest to the Pin,” “Men’s & Women’s Most Accurate Drive” and “Men’s & Women’s Longest

Drive.” Tee time on October 19th is 10 a.m. and there is a rain date of Wednesday, October 26th. Completed applications must be returned in person, postmarked or faxed before midnight, Tuesday, September 20th. Applications can be obtained at the Town of Hempstead Parks Department, 200 North Franklin Street, Hempstead, New York 11550. Applications will also be available online at TOH.LI. The Lido and Merrick Road Park Golf Courses will have applications on hand as well. Completed applications may be returned in person, sent by mail to the Parks Administration Building in Hempstead or faxed to 516.292.6024. There is only one application allowed per person and an individual name cannot appear on more than one entry application. Supervisor’s Cup participants will be chosen by lottery on Tuesday, September 27th at 10 a.m. in the Clubhouse of the Merrick Road Park Golf Course. The public is cordially invited to attend the lottery drawing. Players whose names are drawn in the lottery will have five

days to submit payment. The lottery will select 144 golfers and 20 alternates. Winners will be posted on the town web site at TOH. LI and players will also be notified by phone and e-mail. Golfers may register as a single, or as part of a twosome, threesome or foursome. Selected golfers will be required to make payment in the form of check or money order to the Town of Hempstead within five days of notification. On the day of the event, golfers will be asked to present photo identification at the morning’s check-in. Golfers who are selected as alternates are invited to attend the breakfast and use the driving range for practice as they await the possibility of being added to the field if one or more golfers fail to attend. The Shootout for Soldiers event commenced in Baltimore and has spread to eight other cities. The lacrosse games are played hour-to-hour with participants designated as stars or stripes and ending with a cumulative score for each category. Co-chairman Mike Nelson noted that the Long Island event was the largest event in terms of money raised and participating teams, and all proceeds were donated to two local and

six national foundations and funds, including the Long Island Air Force Association and the U.S. Army Lead the Way Fund. “This has become a real community event, and support from the Levittown community runs deep,” Mr. Nelson noted. “I am particularly proud of the Levittown students and all the other teams whose support and participation were humbling.”

The North Bellmore School District has named Danica Brugge as the interim assistant principal for the Saw Mill Road Elementary School for the 2016-2017 school year. She has been a teacher in the district since 2004. Ms. Brugge, of North Merrick, previously taught fifth and sixth

grade in the district. Last year, she served as acting principal of Park Avenue Elementary School for five months. This year, she joins the district’s largest elementary school. “I’m thrilled to be joining the Saw Mill Road Elementary School community and am looking forward to the first

day of school,” Ms. Brugge said. “North Bellmore is a very special place and I’m truly honored to have this opportunity.” She holds both her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and her master’s degree in literacy from Hofstra University, and her school building leadership certificate from College of Saint Rose. The Girl Scouts of Nassau County recently celebrated National S’mores Day by holding an outdoor day of fun with community members and future Girl Scouts. The event was intended to give local Girls interested in becoming Girl Scouts a “taste” for the Girl Scouts experience: making s’mores, participating in arts and crafts workshops and celebrating the introduction of a brand new s’mores-flavored Girl Scout Cookie available this cookie-selling season.

In addition to the traditional graham cracker sandwich filled with melted chocolate and roasted marshmallow, the Girl Scouts worked together with other members of the public to create unique s’more-inspired creations using the Girl Scouts’ own Mags&Munchies chocolates and Girl Scout Cookies. The event served as a day of sweet celebration and an opportunity for the community - and future Girl Scouts - to learn more about the Girl Scouts of

Nassau County experience. Membership specialists were onsite to answer any questions and register any interested girls and young women. Girl Scouts have a unique, little-known relationship to National S’mores Day. The first recorded s’mores recipe is in an official Girl Scout publication from Troop Leader Loretta Scott Crew in 1927, making this holiday that much more special to the Scouts.

Making a Difference

Bianca Liriano, a recent high school graduate from Bellmore, has been selected as NEFCU’s 2016 Making a Difference Premier Scholarship recipient. The program awards $20,000 annually to one exceptional Long Island student who is a member, or has a parent or guardian that is a member, of the Westbury-based credit union. Ms. Liriano will attend Northeastern University next month. As a recipient of the NEFCU scholarship, she will receive $5,000 per academic year over the next four years. In addition to receiving the top honor in the credit union’s Premier Scholarship program, the Sanford H. Calhoun High School graduate was also awarded $1,000 from NEFCU in May as part of its Making A Difference Family Scholarship

program. To date, NEFCU has awarded nearly $1.1 million in scholarships to Long Island students over the past 10 years. To apply for this scholarship, applicants needed to have at least 100 hours of documented community service, a four-year overall high school grade of 90 or above, and be a recent recipient of NEFCU’s Making a Difference Family Scholarship or High School Scholarship programs. Ms. Liriano achieved a 98.1 grade point average; was vice president of her senior class; a section leader of Crescendo, a nationally recognized show choir; member and officer of the On Tour Company drama club; and a member of Express Yourself, a club where students are

paired with physically and cognitively disabled youth. In addition, she is a Girl Scout who received the Bronze, Silver and Gold awards. For her Silver Award, she enhanced the after-school program at her church and helped build a library. For her Gold Award, she published a children’s book on testing anxiety. “It never ceases to amaze us how incredibly gifted and talented these students are, year after year,” said Valerie Garguilo, vice president of marketing and community relations at NEFCU. “We’re extremely proud of our Making a Difference Scholarship program, because we’re able to help so many extraordinary students reach their potential. It’s the best investment we can make on Long Island.”

Moving On Up The Merrick School District is delighted to welcome Christopher Hoisik as Birch School’s new assistant principal. A familiar face in the district, Mr. Hoisik has served the Birch School community for nearly two decades. In December of 1999, he was appointed as a permanent substitute teacher and teaching assistant, where he provided one-to-one social, behavioral and academic support for students with special needs in general education courses, as well as coordinated peer socialization groups for students with social and emotional needs during lunch and recess. Since 2001, Mr. Hoisik, a resident of Carle Place, has served as a general education teacher for grades 3-5, a position in which he has developed

and facilitated challenging curricula that incorporates problem-solving, creative thinking, technology, engineering, STEM activities and crosscurricular activities, as well as met and exceeded Common Core learning standards and objectives. He has also planned and implemented specially designed instruction, aligned with Common Core standards, for students with special needs. While teaching, Mr. Hoisik also served as an administrative intern at Birch for one year. As intern, he assisted with the implementation of the New York State testing program at the school, which included scheduling, training and making testing modifications for students with special needs, as well as supported administrators

and teachers in student behavior intervention. Outside of his academic duties, Mr. Hoisik has volunteered on various district committees, including serving as coordinator for the Healthy and Safety, Friendship and STEM Day committees. Mr. Hoisik holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts in psychology from Adelphi University, as well as a Master of Arts in school building and district administration from the College of New Rochelle. The Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Dominick Palma and administrative staff welcome Mr. Hoisik and know he’ll exceed expectations due to his many years of experience, passion and dedication to our students.

Board of Ed Meeting At its September 13th board of education meeting, the Merrick Union Free School District board of education will continue its discussion on a possible bond referendum to improve and upgrade facilities throughout the district. Since the beginning of the 2015-2016 school year, the board has been discussing facility needs

that include improvements to basic infrastructure such as bathrooms, sidewalks and masonry, as well as the addition of air conditioning in all classrooms and building a small auditorium onto Chatteron Elementary School. As the board continues its discussion of these and other items, community input is welcomed. The

meeting on September 13th will be held at 7:15 p.m. in the conference room at the administrative building, located at 21 Babylon Road in Merrick. The district will continue to keep the community informed throughout the process and looks forward to participation from parents, staff and residents.

It takes a village, or in this case, a “city that never sleeps,” to put together a true Honor Flight experience. We look forward to working with the talent and patriotism that we know resides in the Big Apple.” Big Apple Honor Flight is a hub of the national Honor Flight Network whose mission is to transport veterans to Washington D.C. to see the memorials built in their honor and to receive the recognition they deserve for all of their sacrifices. BAHF’s first one-day, all-expense-paid trip for these veterans will depart from John F. Kennedy International Airport on an American Airlines charter flight. The national Honor Flight Network includes more than 130 hubs in 44 states across the country. Since its inception in 2005,

over 159,703 veterans have been flown to D.C. on an Honor Flight. In 2015 alone, Honor Flight hubs serviced 20,886 veterans nationally. Not until now has an official Honor Flight been organized out of New York City, where the population of WWII veterans is estimated to be in the thousands. “Of all the wars in our nation’s history, it is World War II that threatened the very existence of America as a culturally diverse and free society,” added Maher. “According to the Veterans Administration, an estimated 430 WWII Veterans die each day nationally. Everyone’s heard of New York’s Bravest and New York’s Finest, but what about New York’s Strongest? Hempstead Town Supervisor Anthony J. Santino, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito and Chabad of Mineola Leader Rabbi Anchelle Perl are taking the time to express their gratitude to these unsung sanitation heroes who dare to go where no man has ever gone before. Also present at the event was Councilman Anthony D’Esposito, Town Clerk Nasrin Ahmad, and Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin. “Sanitation is a basic necessity that goes largely unnoticed by members of our community,” began Santino. “They are on their routes at the crack of dawn, enduring any and all kinds

of weather, laboring away to keep our community clean. There is a reason why they are referred to as ‘New York’s Strongest.’” Santino, D’Esposito and Rabbi Perl plan to “Shake Hands” with each and every sanitation worker, giving them all a symbolic gift of a “water bottle filled with gratitude” to convey their recognition for the worker’s tireless efforts. According to Perl, a little gratitude will go a long way. “If a person has gratitude, he has greater respect for others and it makes for creating human dignity and appreciation. A lot of the problems we have today could be bridged with simple gratitude,” said Perl. “They’re reliable, they’re dedicated, and they are

Founders of the upstate nonprofit, Hudson Valley Honor Flight, are bringing their event to the Big Apple! The first-ever Big Apple Honor Flight will take NYC’s Greatest Generation, veterans of World War II, on the “Flight of a Lifetime” next year on their inaugural trip on April 29th, 2017. Organizers of Big Apple Honor Flight have started the planning process and are looking for volunteers and veterans to make their mission possible. The group has launched www. BigAppleHonorFlight. com, which contains additional information on how to get involved in the planning. Applications to apply to be a veteran honored on the flight can also be found on the website. They plan to take 75 WWII veterans on their first flight from NYC in the spring. Long Island University (LIU) and Virtual Enterprises International (VEI) welcomed future business leaders from across the nation and their mentors to the LIU Post campus this summer for intensive business skill development through the weeklong “Entrepreneurial Leadership Experience.” Entrepreneurial Leadership Experience students were assigned to teams and given five days to develop and launch their own virtual businesses. Using medical tools, the Girl Scouts learned from the professionals how to treat each patient and practiced techniques such as casting an arm and using a scalpel to make incisions on a cantaloupe. The girls also explored an ambulance and realized

This Girl Scouts of Nassau County Health Career Exploration Program is offered to high school-aged Girl Scouts in an effort to aid them in their career decision process. Patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center and their families experienced the wonders of the stage thanks to the John W. Engeman Theater of Northport, LI, which put on a fill-blown production of “Seussical” in the hospital’s lobby. The hospital’s lobby was transformed into an intimate theatre setting, complete with a multitalented troupe of actors in full Seuss regalia,working stage and theatrical lighting. “We couldn’t be more delighted to bring “Seussical” to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, said the theater’s managing director and owner, Kevin O’Neill, while the cast was taking its bows. “Since our earliest history, theater has been the basic form of communication—uniting its audience and providing

people with the ability to share their most basic emotions. “All of us at the John W. Engeman Theater understand how difficult it must be for children and their families who are unable to experience the wonder of theater while they’re confined in hospital. That’s why we felt it was so important to bring the theater to them. It’s our hope that this is just the first of many wonderful shows for the young patients here to enjoy.” Following the one-hour production, sponsored jointly by Bethpage Federal Credit Union and the medical center, cast members signed colorful playbills designed especially for children. And, for those patients unable to leave their rooms, the entire performance was

telecast live throughout the hospital. “We are so grateful to the John W. Engeman Theatre and our good friends at Bethpage Federal Credit Union for bringing this wonderful show to our hospital,” said Amanda Filippazzo, special events coordinator at Cohen... “All you have to do is look at the faces of these children to understand how much this means to them. We look forward to a close association on many more wonderful productions.” Many of the youngsters in the audience had never seen live theater before. When asked for her thoughts, one young lady (who sat openmouthed through the entire production) gave the following rave review: “I really like all the actors. When are they coming back?”

Red Cape Ambassador

The American Heart Association is proud to have Thomas Wrightington serving as the 2016 Long Island Heart Walk “Red Cape” Ambassador. This year’s Long Island Heart Walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 18th at Jones Beach. Thomas was in the third grade when he found out he had a congenital heart defect, specifically an aortic valve insufficiency and a PFO (hole in his heart). Thomas loves sports and loves playing them. He also wants to spread awareness and help the American Heart Association so kids like him can live stronger and healthier lives. At the Heart Walk, survivors are celebrated. A

“Red Cap” is a red baseball cap featuring the American Heart Association logo. “Red Caps” refer to survivors of heart attack, cardiac arrest or heart surgery who wear the red caps as a symbol of their survival while walking in the Heart Walk. “White Caps” will be distributed to stroke survivors the day of the walk. Pediatric cardiovascular disease survivors will receive red super hero capes to acknowledge their courage. As Red Cape Ambassador for the Long Island Heart Walk, Thomas will help create awareness about the importance of survivors participating in the event and to create awareness

that heart disease and stroke aren’t “just an older man’s diseases.” Hundreds of survivors from across Long Island participate to show that heart disease and stroke can be beaten. The American Heart Association estimates there are more than 71 million Americans alive with one or more types of cardiovascular disease. On Sunday, September 18th, join our “Red Cape” Ambassador and thousands of other survivors, families and friends from all over Long Island at the Long Island Heart Walk at Jones Beach, Field 5. Annual Achiever Awards The Women’s Fund of Long Island (“WFLI”) will celebrate the organization’s 25th Anniversary at its annual Achiever Awards Breakfast on November 30th, at the Crest Hollow Country Club.
