The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition To Host Its Annual Together In Teal® No Boundaries National Broadcast Celebration
The National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC), will be hosting its 2020 Together in TEAL - No Boundaries, National Broadcast Celebration on Saturday, September 26, at 7 PM ET/ 6 PM CT and 4 PM PT. NOCC is launching a new nationwide campaign and event that will enable our community to unite from coast-to-coast with no limits. While our traditional Together in TEAL Run/Walk events cannot take place in the interest of safety and public health, our community needs to be united. The organization’s
signature event, hosted in communities across the United States each year, raises the critical funds necessary to support Earlier Awareness, Quality of Life for Survivors, Research, and Community Outreach. On September 26, we will unite people across the nation touched by ovarian cancer for our Together in TEAL - No Boundaries National Broadcast Celebration. This event will highlight the most inspiring and remarkable stories being told every day in our communities. Ovarian cancer has no boundaries, so
our movement to eradicate it shouldn’t have them either. The global pandemic which limits us from gathering has empowered us. Now is a time for unity. TAKING A LOOK BACK! This August I have been “taking a look back” at articles I have published in the past, giving various charities another chance at exposure. During these tough times, it is very important we continue to help others and support local charities where we can. Enjoy this past article about a wonderful nonprofit, The Book Fairies.

Accepted Into Prestigious Math Program Sarah Chavez-Olaya, a sixth grade student from Woodland Middle School in the East Meadow School District, was accepted into the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students. Selection by the institute implies that a student is among the top 0.1% of all students in their grade, in mathematics, on Long Island. As one of the most competitive programs in the nation, each nominated student is expected to spend 60 hours on inclass and related outside

projects. The curriculum covers mathematical topics such as algebra, geometry and number theory. It also includes others not
included in the standard courses of study, such as problem-solving applied to probability, theory of finite differences and mass point geometry. “I am particularly concerned about kids congregating off-campus,” said Jason Siegel, a senior double majoring in journalism and history with a minor in political science. “I think students will go off campus for get-togethers and parties where there will be no one to enforce mask-wearing and social distancing. One of the biggest concerns from some of the students is intergrading the incoming freshmen. Many upperclassmen worry that these new students will have a
harder time meshing with the rest of them. “I met a bunch of my closer friends in-person during orientation,” said Shelby Van Hyfte, a sophomore neuroscience major. “These incoming freshmen will mainly be meeting people through different methods. It’s going to take more effort for them to make friends.” “I’m worried that the incoming freshmen will not be able to have the real Hofstra experience,” said an anonymous sophomore majoring in health science. “I met my best friend at orientation. These students had to do theirs online, and it’s not the same.” Hofstra said that they’re trying to put together events such as drivein movies and virtual activities so that the incoming freshmen will be able to meet people and make new friends.

Learning at home is different from being in a traditional classroom environment, but with some effective strategies, students can persevere without missing a beat. • Stick To A Schedule. Many students are successful because they follow a schedule. The Center for Social and Emotional Foundations of Early Learning says that routines and schedules are important because they influence a child’s emotional and cognitive development. Children feel secure with schedules, which may help them recognize what’s expected of them. When learning at home, students should strive to maintain as consistent a schedule as possible, including bedtimes, wake times, hours devoted to learning, and time to get outside or engage in downtime activities. • Connect Live If Possible. There are many free tools
and resources available that enable teachers to provide live video lessons or to record them so students can watch them later. Similarly, social networking apps and virtual meeting programs enable students to connect digitally. This can be helpful for collaborative learning assignments or just to see a familiar face. • Stick To Tools That Work. Once students find apps or systems that work, they should stick with them, offers Khan Academy, an educational tutoring resource. There are many factors outside of one’s control during virtual instruction, but maintaining consistency with tools and schedules is one way to feel more confident and secure. • Check Student Accounts Frequently. Just like students, teachers may be learning as they go in regard to remote learning strategies. and are aware of due dates. • Reach Out To Instructors. Allegheny College suggests students contact their teachers if they are unsure of how to participate in remote learning environments. Ask questions about assignments, get clarification on key topics and be sure to tune into any remote chats or virtual “office hours.” • Stay In Touch With Guidance, If Needed. Remote learning is a new experience for many students, and there may be certain struggles or road blocks. It can be easy to grow frustrated with equipment failures or lack of in-person interaction. Schools employ qualified therapists and guidance counselors who are just a click, call or email away if issues need to be talked through. Students should utilize all resources made available to them. Virtual home instruction can be made even easier with some extra assistance and guidance.

What To Know As An Adult Heading Back To School
College campuses are diverse. Newly minted high school graduates embarking on the next stage of their studies might dominate college campuses, but many established professionals who have long since graduated from high school are also among the student bodies at universities across the globe. The National Center for Education Statistics says that one in five Americans enrolled in undergraduate higher education is at least 30 years old. The changing face of higher education should be a comfort to adults who may have been apprehensive about heading back to school. Adults considering a return to school should not allow age to deter them from enrolling. Many people now complete degrees later in life, while others return to school to study subjects they did not study during their first go-rounds as college students. Finding the right fit in regard to a college
is different for adults than it is students right out of high school. Responsibilities to family and employers complicate the decision about where to go to school. The following tips can help adults as they decide where to continue their educations. • Choose a school that meets your needs. Look for schools that can accommodate priorities other than academics, such as family and work. Many schools now offer flexible schedules and online classes. Check out schools with strong reputations for working with adult learners. • Sit down with a college counselor. If you’ve been in college before, pull your transcripts and bring any information about coursework, credits and life experience. This way you can be credited for what you have already accomplished. Counselors can serve as invaluable resources as you navigate a return to the classroom. • Brush up on the skills required of successful students. If you’ve been out of school for awhile,
brush up on your study skills, note-taking, annotating, and other skills that can serve you well in an academic environment. • Speak with your employer. Many employers support employees who want to return to school, especially when employees will be gaining skills that are applicable to their existing careers. Some employees may even help their employers finance their educations. According to Matthew Reed, the vice president for learning at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, N.J., roughly 90 percent of midsize or large employers offer some kind of tuition reimbursement. Even when that’s not available, some employers may have an arrangement with certain schools that provide discounts to their workers, says Reed. Adults returning to school is becoming increasingly common. Planning and making use of resources at your disposal can help you navigate the process of returning to school as an adult.

Blood Donations to Help Replenish Supplies Amid Coronavirus Public Health Crisis
Oyster Bay Town Councilman Steve Labriola and Councilwoman Laura Maier have announced a partnership with the New York Blood Center to collect donations on Thursday, September 3, 2020 to help hospitals meet the ongoing and pressing need for blood during the coronavirus pandemic. The Blood Drive will take place from 1pm to 7pm at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located 167 S. Broadway in Hicksville. All donors will receive ‘Free Blizzards’ vouchers for Dairy Queen, which can be redeemed at their Massapequa, Levittown, Huntington or East Northport locations. “Blood donations are extremely important during normal times to help secure any necessary blood transfusions for patients. Now, during this pandemic, blood supplies have dwindled tremendously and are critically low, so this blood drive, the largest upcoming drive in our local area, will be critical to help our local hospitals meet demand and continue their life-saving operations during these extraordinary times,” said Councilwoman Maier. “Please consider participating in this blood drive and help bolster our blood banks so that as many people as possible can be helped.” The Town’s Blood Drive will operate by
appointment only, with no walk-in donations accepted. Social distancing and sanitary protocols will be in place to maintain the health and safety of all donors. To qualify as a blood donor, a person must between the ages of 17 and 75 years old (16 with parental permission and 76 or older with a doctor’s note), weigh at least 110 pounds and not have donated blood within the last 56 days. Anyone who received a tattoo within the past 12 months is ineligible to donate. It is recommended that volunteers eat well (low fat) and drink fluids in the days before the Blood Drive. “Donating blood is a quick, easy, and safe process, and the pint of blood you donate will never be missed from your body, as it is quickly reproduced within your body,” Councilman Labriola added. “If you have family members or friends willing to donate, please ask them to support our effort this year, as this initiative is more vital than ever to help make sure that our local hospitals can meet the excessive demand during the coronavirus pandemic and continue to save the lives of as many people as possible.” For information, contact the Town Board Office at (516) 624-6304.

5 Smart Ways to Prep for Back-to-School Without the Stress (StatePoint) Whether the new school year means your kids will be heading back to the classroom, learning remotely, or a mix of both, back-to-school will most likely be stressful. Thinking ahead can help prepare everyone for a new way of learning, and simplify the transition from the slow ease of summertime to the bustle of the school year. Follow these tips so that everyone is ready when the first bell rings. 1. Resume the Routine. Summertime schedules are often lax, but a more structured routine is important during the school year. The 2020-21 school year promises to be one unlike any other today’s students, and even their parents and grandparents, have ever known. In March 2020, many schools were forced to abruptly cancel in-person instruction as government officials tried to prevent the spread of the deadly COVID-19 virus. As the 201920 school year wound down and summer approached, school officials remained uncertain if they would reopen for in-person instruction in the fall, leaving student-athletes to wonder what would happen to fall sports seasons. The cancellation of in-person school sessions and extracurricular activities was hard on every student, and athletes have proven no exception. Many graduating seniors did not get a chance to compete alongside their teammates during spring sports season, bringing their scholastic athletic careers to an abrupt end. With the upcoming 2020-21 scholastic sports season in similar limbo, student-athletes in the class of 2021 might be worried that their own chances to compete are in jeopardy as well. In light of that, local communities can take steps to support scholastic athletes during an uncertain time. • Make a show of your support. Stayat-home measures prevented many schools from hosting traditional graduation ceremonies for graduating seniors. Lifesaving Generator Safety Tips In the aftermath of Tropical Storm Isaias and in anticipation of an extremely active hurricane season, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran was recently joined by the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office to highlight and demonstrate safe generator installation and use. A growing number of local residents are purchasing generators for their homes to prepare for potential storm-related outages. However, recent incidents have demonstrated that generators can pose a serious threat if installed or used improperly. “As we continue to address Isaias aftermath and hold PSEG accountable, let’s keep an eye on what could be a record-setting storm season. Many residents are installing or using portable generators during storm season, and we want to make sure everyone is staying safe. Portable generators can be a lifesaver during power outages, but when used or installed improperly they can be extremely dangerous. Recently, a South Farmingdale homeowner lost their home after filling a hot generator with gasoline from a gas can that caused
the vapor to be ignited from the hot generator exhaust, and caused significant damage to the house,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. County Executive Curran and the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office offer the following safety guidelines for residents installing or using a portable generator. Never use a generator indoors or in enclosed spaces. This includes garages, crawl spaces, and basements. Opening windows will not help. Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas. Carbon monoxide poisoning caused by inadequate ventilation has been an all too common tragedy following natural disasters and blackouts. Recognize signs and symptoms of CO poisoning, which includes dizziness, headaches, nausea, and tiredness. If you or someone else should experience these symptoms, get them to fresh air immediately and seek medical attention. Only fill generators with fuel when the generator is turned off and cool. Fueling a hot generator can cause vapors to ignite. Before refueling, shut down the generator and allow it to cool. Fuel cans should be stored and
transported in approved vented containers marked with their contents. Filling gas cans must be done on the ground and not inside of a vehicle or the bed of a truck, with the vehicle turned off. Generators should have at least 3 feet of clearance on all sides and above to ensure adequate ventilation. Watch out for the exhaust of your generator that the fumes do not come back into your home or the home of a neighbor and are kept away from fresh air intakes. If you are powering your home, make sure that a licensed electrician installs the equipment. Your electrical service main should be set to the off position. Do not create a condition where you feed power back into the grid and potentially seriously injure the same electrical utility workers trying to help you. Keep generators out of the rain and avoid creating static electricity around them, especially when fueling the tank. All generators should be grounded. Connect to a grounding rod, then to the generator frame itself, with a grounding cable or suitable copper wire.

11th Annual Over 50 Fair Will Be A Virtual Charity Conference The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s event can be enjoyed by computer or phone on September 12 and 13 from 12-4 each day. 10 local speakers, some of whom are experts in their field, will be sharing information about a variety of topics of interest to Baby Boomers and seniors, including long term care insurance, a comedy show, Microsoft training, reverse mortgages, and cleaning without

Bank Of America Connects Long Island-Area Youth To Workforce Success Celebrating the 17th year of its Student Leaders program, Bank of America today announced that the five Long Island high school juniors and seniors selected as Student Leaders (#BofAStudentLeaders) have completed their paid summer internship experience of leadership, civic engagement, and workforce skills-building. In light of the health concerns that remain in local communities, the program was adapted to a virtual format, through which students had the opportunity to participate in sessions that exposed them to the vital role that nonprofits play in advancing community health, the importance of public private partnerships to advance social change, and a focus on building financial acumen. Recent estimates suggest that the number of disconnected youth – those who aren’t in school and don’t have a job – has likely tripled since last year and could be as high as 18 million. Without access to opportunities that build career skills, many young people may be left behind, leading to high rates of youth unemployment and hindering overall economic progress. In addition to Student Leaders, the bank invests in summer jobs for young people through its partnership with 40 summer youth employees working remotely across the Long Island market. This summer, Bank of America is connecting approximately 3,000 young adults to summer jobs through partnerships with nonprofits and local mayors and its own Student Leaders® program.
Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol
(LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the risk
of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent
weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills
more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.

PSEG Long Island to Reimburse Customers for Food and Medicines PSEG Long Island is expanding its claims policy due to the COVID-19 pandemic so that customers whose electrical service was interrupted by Tropical Storm Isaias for at least 72 hours can be reimbursed for spoiled food and medication. The tropical storm knocked out power for more than 420,000 customers on Long Island and in the Rockaways, making it the
most destructive storm since Superstorm Sandy. “We recognize that losing power in August, together with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, was a hardship for many of our customers,” PSEG Long Island President and COO Daniel Eichhorn said. “Given the unique combination of circumstances, we believe the right thing to do is to expand our claims process
to ease the burden on the customers most impacted by Tropical Storm Isaias.” PSEG Long Island will reimburse residential customers up to $250 and commercial customers up to $5,000 for food spoilage if their service was interrupted for 72 hours or longer between Aug. 4, and Aug. 12, 2020 because of Tropical Storm Isaias. For residential customers,
food spoilage claims of $150 or less must include an itemized list. Food spoilage claims over $150 must include an itemized list and proof of loss (for example: cash register tapes, store or credit card receipts, canceled checks or photographs of spoiled items). Separately, customers will be reimbursed for losses, up to a maximum of $300, for prescription medications
that spoiled due to lack of refrigeration. Customers must provide an itemized list of the medications and proof of loss (for example: pharmacy prescription label or pharmacy receipt identifying the medicine). Commercial customers applying for reimbursement must supply an itemized list of spoiled food and proof of loss (invoices, inventory lists, bank statements).
Customers can apply for reimbursement at www. psegliny.com/claims. The reimbursement claims cannot be processed over the phone. Customers will have until Sept. 16, 2020 to file claims. Reimbursement is expected to take up to 60 business days from when a proper claim form is completed and submitted to PSEG Long Island.
