Some parents may recall their own pre-school experiences, mostly remembering extended moments of play and more monitored fun inside the school. But as the world of education has become more competitive, and students are required to meet certain standards at even earlier grade levels than before, pre-school has undergone its own transformation. Academic pre-schools have become a popular choice for parents hoping their children can gain that extra edge. Rather than the play-based philosophy pre-schools adhered to in the past, academic pre-schools introduce students to the rigors of the classroom. These academic pre-schools often teach math and reading. Proponents of this type of learning say that children are sponges at early ages, and the more information they can be

Religious organizations frequently offer their own faith-based preschool programs. Parents will have to decide if they want a faith-based curriculum for their young children.

Are pre- and post-care services available? A school that has flexible hours may be appealing to some. This enables parents to drop off and pick up children according to their own work schedules or in coordination with school hours for other children in the family. Visit the school and assess the

Help Students Choose an Extracurricular Activity

Extracurricular activities can benefit students in various ways. Academic clubs, sports and volunteer organizations provide students with opportunities to grow as people and make new friends while also teaching kids skills they will use for the rest of their lives. Many parents are aware that extracurricular activities can help students improve their chances of gaining admission to college. But students who choose the right extracurricular activities will benefit in greater ways than simply strengthening their college applications. The following are a handful of ways parents can help their sons and daughters choose extracurricular activities they can benefit from for years to come: Ask kids to jot down their interests.

Students are more likely to enjoy and excel at extracurricular activities that align with their existing interests. Ask kids to jot down a list of their interests or anything they might want to try. Youngsters might want to learn a musical instrument even if they have never before taken a course on music. Once kids have listed their interests, look for activities that allow them to further explore those interests. Chances are there is a schoolsponsored or community-based club or organization that will align with at least one thing on your child’s list. Encourage kids to have fun. Kids are more likely to enjoy and fully commit to an activity if they find it fun. While extracurricular activities can help kids grow as people and improve their image in the eyes of college

admissions officers, kids will get even more out of an activity if they enjoy doing it. Look for something that won’t interfere with schoolwork. Extracurricular activities can look great on a college application, but that benefit is lost if the activity interferes with a student’s academic performance. Some activities, including sports, demand more of students’ time than others, but make sure kids know that school always comes first. Ask around. Ask neighbors or school officials for recommendations to help kids who have tried but failed to find the right fit with regard to extracurricular activities. Sometimes it takes a little trial and error before a child finds an activity he or she is comfortable with. Fellow parents can make great

resources, and school officials likely know of a host of clubs and organizations that kids may be interested in. Sign up with your kids. If kids are hesitant to sign up for an activity because they are shy, sign up with them. Volunteer organizations are typically family-friendly, and kids might be more likely to come out of their shells if they sign up with their parents or siblings. As kids grow more comfortable with an activity, they will want to get more involved even if mom and dad don’t have the time. Parents can employ various strategies to help kids find activities they can be passionate about for years to come.

The Power of Positivity By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I have often admired those who have the ability to see the good in every situation, those seemingly mystical individuals who appear to glide through life surrounded by an aura of peace and contentment, no matter what obstacles may be thrown their way. How it is that such an approach comes so naturally for some, yet is a constant struggle for others? Certainly, we all come from different circumstances, are faced with varying situations in our everyday lives – but, at our core, we are all made up of the same basic components. How we choose to deal with life’s variables is what makes us each unique. Do we meet them head on, or do we shy away? Is our tendency to be confrontational, or passive? Are we cynical or receptive to new ideas and methodologies?

Personally, I would brand myself a mixture of these facets, somewhat cynical, but yet still idealistic enough to remain hopeful that things will get better, over time, somehow. A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you. Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.

The key, naturally, is to take this practice and apply it to those many hours spent outside the yoga studio, to transfer it into the “real” world beyond the self-made sanctuary. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset. You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not. Here’s to a new year…my new year. Plenty to smile about.

Calling All Photographers The Town of Hempstead is pleased to announce its 19th annual Calendar Photo Contest for the 2017 Town of Hempstead Complimentary Calendar. Judges will choose from the submitted photographs that best depict a Town of Hempstead scene, event, park or other happening. At least one photograph will be chosen for each month and many smaller photos will also appear within the calendar. “Our complimentary calendar depicts the beauty and wonder of Hempstead Town’s vibrant parks, breathtaking beaches and everything the Town of Hempstead has to offer, including Long Island’s pristine south shore,” stated Supervisor Santino. “I encourage all Town of Hempstead residents who are eager photographers to submit their photographs to be considered for inclusion in next year’s calendar.” The following criteria will apply to photograph submissions: 1. The contest is ONLY open to Town of Hempstead residents (including Town of Hempstead employees) and ALL photographs must be taken in the Town of Hempstead.

2. Deadline for submitting up to five (5) photographs is September 15th, 2016. Entries can be mailed or hand delivered to: Town of Hempstead Calendar Photo Contest, One Washington Street, Hempstead NY 11550 or e-mailed to jblenn@tohmail.org. No exceptions, the deadline will be strictly enforced. 3. Slides, transparencies or copies of photographs may NOT be submitted. Only photographically printed photographs (any size up to 8” x 12”) or digital photos (saved as approximately 14” x 9” or larger, 300 dpi jpg images) e-mailed to jblenn@tohmail.org may be submitted. Please do not print your name/ signature/copyright on the photograph. All photographically printed photographs submitted will be returned upon completion of the printing of the calendar. We will NOT print the names of those in the photograph, but we do need them. There will be at least 12 “winners” whose photos will appear as large photos and many other “winners” whose photos will appear as smaller photos in the 2017 Town of Hempstead Calendar. “I look forward to seeing the tremendous talent displayed in the 2017 Town of Hempstead calendar, which will be distributed to all 243,000 homes in the Town of Hempstead,” concluded Supervisor Santino. “I also look forward to presenting all “winners” with an award certificate recognizing them for their contribution to a magnificent Town calendar.”

Best in the Nation All three high schools in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District have been recognized by Newsweek as being among the best high schools in the country. On the magazine’s 2016 list of America’s top 500 high schools, John F. Kennedy High School was listed at No. 160, Wellington C. Mepham High School came in at No. 266 and Sanford H. Calhoun High School was ranked at No. 300. The rankings are based on a college readiness score

determined by average AP/ IB, ACT and SAT scores, along with graduation rate and college-bound percentage. Counselor-tostudent ratio and student retention rate over four years of enrollment also factor into the ranking. “I am extremely proud that all three of our high schools have been recognized as being among the best in the country,” said BellmoreMerrick Superintendent of Schools Dr. John DeTommaso. “Of course, these lists don’t completely

measure the greatness of our schools. Anyone who spends an extended period of time in any of our three high schools or our middle schools can more effectively measure the incredible things our staff does for students. Add a very supportive parent group with a board of education dedicated to providing what’s best for our kids, and you have a recipe for success.” Newsweek used data from the National Center for Education Statistics for its 2016 rankings.

Newly Appointed

With the 2016-2017 school year around the corner, the East Meadow School District extends its gratitude to Mary Ann O’Brien for her years of service as Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance and welcomes Patrick Pizzo and Jennifer Frisenda to their newly appointed administrative roles. Ms. O’Brien entered the District as the Assistant Business Administrator in September 2009 and held this position until January 2014, at which time she was promoted to Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance. As she heads into retirement, Superintendent of Schools Leon J. Campo and members of the Board of Education and Administrative staff thank Ms. O’Brien for her time and dedication to the district. “As Mary Ann heads into retirement, we wish her tremendous success in all of life’s future endeavors and thank her for her devotion, passion, and years of service to our community, staff and, more importantly, our children,” Mr. Campo said. Effective September 1st, Mr. Pizzo will accept the role of Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance after serving as the District’s Assistant to the Superintendent for Administration and Special Projects for the past eight years. In the latter position, Mr. Pizzo led a team that developed the District’s annual expense budget and prepared budgetary presentations for the Board of Education, parent teacher associations, residents and community members under the guidance of

the Superintendent. He also built, defended and implemented annual facilities, operations and capital budgets totaling over $9.9 million dollars, as well as repaired and maintained the plant budget totaling over $2.1 million dollars, for review and approval by the Superintendent and Board of Education. In addition, Mr. Pizzo served on the District Cabinet, where he was responsible for the efficient physical plant operation, environmental safety and preventative maintenance of 10 buildings covering 1.34 million square feet of occupied space and 130 acres of grounds. Prior to his time in East Meadow, Mr. Pizzo was the Director of Facilities and Operations for the Hicksville School District. He also held the position of Deputy Regional Manager for the New York City Department of Education, a role in which he oversaw the physical plant operation and management of 39 schools. Mr. Pizzo received his Bachelor of Science from SUNY Oneonta and both his Master of Business Administration and Advanced Certificate as a School District Business Leader from LIU Post. Also on September 1st, Jennifer Frisenda will accept her newly appointed position as the District’s Assistant Business Administrator. Ms. Frisenda joined the East Meadow school community in 2014 as District Treasurer, where she maintained district records and files, reconciled monthly bank statements and submitted monthly financial statements to the Board of Education, Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent for Business and Finance, as well as performed yearly school lunch audits to ensure compliance with state regulations. Prior to entering the district, Ms. Frisenda was an administrative intern in the Jericho and Oyster Bay-East Norwich school districts. In this

role, she established procedure manuals to specify job descriptions of business office personnel, ensuring all aspects of each job were detailed, and created flow charts to show job responsibilities and progression. She also reviewed, revised and recreated budget brochures for the 20132014 budget and worked directly with the Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations to ensure all data was provided to the community. Ms. Frisenda holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Marist College, as well as a Master of Business Administration and Master of Science in Education from LIU Post. “We welcome Patrick and Jennifer to their new administrative positions and know they will be very successful,” Mr. Campo said.

Board Honors At the July 12th reorganization meeting of the BellmoreMerrick Central High School District Board of Education, Janet Goller was elected to the role of president for the 20162017 school year, while Dr. Nancy Kaplan was elected to the position of vice president. Goller and Kaplan took their oaths of office and were sworn in by district clerk Claire Neufeld. In addition, Lisa Katz, representing the Merrick School District, was sworn in as the newest trustee to the board.

Back to School lessons to use in the first 20 days of the school year. The goal is to provide a strong foundation to set the tone for strong literacy development throughout the year. Teachers learned about incorporating readers’ notebooks into their classes which are designed to deepen students’ abilities to think, talk and write about their reading. They also explored model texts to teach the eight literary elements, and how to build a list of mentor texts for a classroom, which are used to provide examples of good writing.

Math workshops provided teachers with ideas for lessons to engage students in meaningful and rich mathematical activities, and how to create classroom environments filled with numbers. There was also a classroom management training session. “Our teachers have been engaged in meaningful professional development throughout the summer that will benefit our students,” said Tillie McNamara, the district’s director of education programs and staff development. “This ensures that North Bellmore has some of the best trained teachers on Long Island.” The programs were presented by Lindsey Anderson and Matt Comiskey, elementary instructional and curriculum coordinators in the Northport-East Northport School District. Women of Distinction L e v i t t o w n Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald and Board of Education Vice President Peggy Marenghi both received a 2016 Women of Distinction Award bestowed by the New York State Assembly’s 17th District during a ceremony held at the Farmingdale Public Library on August 13th. The annual award honors women who contribute to their community in the areas of business, education, military, community affairs, healthcare, government and volunteerism. Currently serving as the district’s superintendent of schools, Dr. McDonald has held numerous positions within the district, including director of pupil personnel services and assistant superintendent for business and finance. In addition, Dr. McDonald recently received the Hofstra George M. Estabrook Alumni Association Distinguished Service Award and the Nassau County Legislature’s 2016 Trailblazer Award. Also a lifelong Levittown resident, Mrs. Marenghi has served as a school district trustee since 2009.

She recently retired from her longtime position as principal of the New Hyde Park Road School in New Hyde Park, N.Y. Mrs. Marenghi is also a member of the American Red Cross, an organization with which she has participated in disaster relief efforts during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Superstorm Sandy and September 11th, 2001. Mrs. Marenghi said she is honored to have been recognized for her efforts in the community. “I was excited to be honored and look forward to continuing my work in the Levittown community,” she said.

The Levittown Public Library was the hub of discussion as students from Jonas Salk and Wisdom Lane middle schools conversed about Holly Goldberg Sloan’s “Counting by 7’s,” this school year’s pick for the annual Summer Reading Extravaganza and community read. The event was the third of three summer book discussion and English language arts activity dates designed to promote and inspire a Levittown community of readers. Director of K-12 English Kerin Slattery explained that reading the same book brings the community

together. “Reading the same book creates a bond and collaboration among students and staff by giving everyone something similar to discuss,” she said. Students were required to read the book over the summer and will discuss, share and write about “Counting by 7’s” upon returning to school on September 7th, thus incorporating the Summer Reading Extravaganza into the core curriculum. In addition to the book discussions, the district made available a dynamic website from which to download student and teacher/administrator

blogs discussing key elements of the book, as well as video clips of staff discussions. The website also included opportunities to upload additional reading material and engage in related book activities. With each activity completed, students entered a raffle for prizes or the opportunity to have lunch with the author, who will visit the district during the school year. On October 27th, the district will host a READ Showcase, highlighting the activities and projects completed at the book discussion events.

Learning to Swim Over two dozen children who were once afraid of the water and lacked basic safety skills are now swimming thanks to free 1-on-1 swim lessons offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) who teamed up with the Levittown Swim Association (LSA) to provide swim lessons this summer. The swim lessons were part of BBBSLI’s Summer Series which included a variety of free activities for kids and their mentors to participate in together. “For many of the kids, it was their first time learning to swim, most were fearful, but each one learned basic skills and had 1-on-1 instruction. We can’t fully express our gratitude to the LSA leadership and the volunteer swimmers who were simply incredible,”

said Nancy Travers, Director of Services for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island. LSA is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization swimming program where children develop and learn competitive swimming skills, and then use them to compete against each other in swim meets during the season. “Levittown Swimming Association is all about kids helping kids. When BBBSLI approached us to give swim lessons to children who didn’t swim, our swimmers could not step up fast enough”, said Carol Wyckoff, LSA President. Watching the best swimmers in the world compete in the Olympics is a great reminder that until a young person is given the opportunity to

learn … there is no telling what they are capable of achieving. For 39 years, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island has been making a positive difference by matching children across Long Island in need of guidance and support with an adult mentor who can serve as a positive role model in their life. BBBSLI believes every child should have the opportunity to reach his or her full potential, both as individuals and citizens. SCOPE Dinner Meeting Long Island’s newest public school leaders were welcomed and introduced to the area’s seasoned colleagues during SCOPE’S 32nd annual Dinner Meeting for Superintendents and School Board Members, held at the St. John University’s Oakdale campus on August 11th. The event provided the opportunity for newly appointed superintendents and newly elected school board trustees to mingle and share ideas with fellow educators from school districts across Nassau and Suffolk counties. During his introduction and welcome, SCOPE Executive Director George L. Duffy urged those in attendance to utilize the many organizations associated with SCOPE

and noted that developing the minds of students is an educator’s most important job. “The children we educate today are the leaders of tomorrow,” he said. Guest speaker New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia discussed the changes made and ongoing reviews of the Common Core Learning Standards, state curriculum, student assessments and teacher evaluations. In terms of student assessments, Elia said she believes that “assessments have a role in education and can work as an important tool to educate our children.” She also noted that the state is working to be more transparent by releasing 75 percent of the test questions and providing a

parent-friendly assessment report. In addition, the commissioner addressed teacher evaluations, which she said are now being reviewed by educators. “You want evaluations that can help teachers move forward,” she said. New York State Regent Roger Tilles presented his views on the demographic and geographic issues resulting in gaps in education and graduation rates. “Districts are asked to overcome issues that are often beyond our schools,” he said. “During my visits to high-need districts, I have noticed that what brings students to school are the programs we often cut from schools, and I hope we can turn that around.”

Missing Type Campaign New York Blood Center has joined blood donor organizations across 21 countries with the Missing Type campaign to highlight an almost 30% international drop in new blood donors compared to a decade ago. Every second, three people across the world receive a life changing blood transfusion, thanks to selfless donors who answer the call to donate. Participating blood services reported the number of people becoming donors and giving blood for the first time decreased by 27.6% since 2005. In the United States, there is a particular need for new donors with O negative blood, the universal blood type, and donors of minority backgrounds such as Latino/Hispanic and African American community members. Blood is needed for transfusions during organ transplants or when someone is undergoing chemotherapy. Without blood and people who donated I would not be here today,” said Shields.
