Golf Classic Set The Friends of Mercy Medical Center 36th annual Golf Classic will be held on Thursday, September 14th, at the Garden City Country Club. The event will honor Donald H. Regan, a consultant in sales and portfolio risk. A Rockville Centre resident for over thirty years, Don endeavors to improve his community. While Don has displayed financial talent
throughout his career he is even more dedicated to his philanthropic work. Don came to Mercy over 20 years ago spearheading several projects including the Mercy Fund drive in the 1990’s. He is a devoted board member of the Friends of Mercy Medical Center and has worked with the Friends to provide millions in support for the medical center. Don has been on the Board of Swim
Across America, Nassau Suffolk since 2001. His philanthropic work also includes supporting the De Lasalle School in Freeport, Habitat for Humanity and the Harlem Children’s Zone, as well as being on the educational advisory boards for Kent State’s financial engineering graduate program, and the advisory committee for the entrepreneurial portfolio management at Holy Cross

I have always been a big believer in the concept of birthdays as beginnings, sort of personal new years, if you will, for each individual person. As such, my expectations of such days tend to aim for a level of unreasonable perfection, whether celebrating my own or that of a loved one; feeling that, somehow, this one day represents an omen of things to come over the next 364. This year, I decided to begin my day by driving to my favorite local sunrise spot, in the hope of catching one of those breathtakingly spectacular views first thing in the morning. All week, the weather looked to be beautiful, clear skies and sunshine all the way. Though it seemed exceptionally gray and gloomy as I headed south, I hoped the clouds would soon be accented by shooting rays of gold and pink.
Over 30 minutes later, as I aimlessly wandered the docks, attempting to capture “artsy” photographs of the still-muted surroundings, I wondered if this particular outing had been a colossal waste of time. Here I was, sleepily counting down to 6:03 a.m., when I could just as well have stayed under the covers at home. New beginnings, indeed. And then, just as I was about to cut my losses and head back to my pillow and blanket for the remainder of the morning, I heard a young boy who had been fishing at the other end of the dock with his father exclaim, “Dad, look at the sun! How cool is that?” Shifting my gaze over the horizon, I was shocked to see a huge red ball emerging out of the haze, nearly 10 minutes past “official” sunrise time. As I attempted to capture
the sight before me, I realized that pictures would never do it justice; and so, for once, I simply watched as the red turned to gold and the sun blanketed the bay with its shimmering rays. Too often do we become caught up in documenting a particular event, rarely allowing ourselves the time to take it all in, to truly become immersed in the experience. While one single day may not an entire year dictate, it can certainly set the tone in a symbolic manner; and on this, my 35th birthday, I was heartened to witness the gloom lift to reveal stunning beauty underneath. Patience is a virtue, as is appreciating the small moments, in the hope that they will lead to many more down the road. Here’s to day one being one small step in that direction.

Going Green at School Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace eco-friendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom. One of the easiest steps to take is to reduce paper usage. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school. Instead of relying so heavily on paper, students can take notes on laptops or tablets while teachers can rely on smartboards and notebooks for classroom lessons. When paper must be used, make a concentrated effort to discard it in designated recycling bins in each classroom.

Picasso, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionist exhibitions and recently curated the permanent installation of Western art at a major new private museum in Taiwan as well as several exhibitions in Berlin, Amsterdam, Lausanne, Manhattan and Long Island’s East End. Dr. Riley is a prolific arts journalist, reviewer and essayist and a celebrated public speaker. His 32 books on art, business and
disabilities. In connection with his work for WE, Dr. Riley won important awards from the Mayor’s Office of the City of New York, Easter Seals, United Cerebral Palsy, the National Recovery Alliance among other organizations. Sought after as a guest commentator on the art market as well as other topics, Dr. Riley has appeared on CNN, NBC, MSNBC, CBS, ABC and Fox News. He began his publishing career at Doubleday, where he edited several books with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. He was a tenured professor at the City University of New York (CUNY), has been a visiting professor in Shijiazhuang (mainland China) and teaches in Clarkson University’s management program. Angela Susan Anton, president of the board of trustees of Nassau County Museum of Art, announced that Charles A. Riley II, Ph.D. has been named director of the Museum. Dr. Riley’s long association with Nassau County Museum of Art includes having served as curator-at-large and popular presenter of many lectures offered for many exhibitions. He helped curate the Museum’s
public policy include the recently published Free as Gods: How the Jazz Age Reinvented Modernism, The Jazz Age in France, The Art of Peter Max, Art at Lincoln Center, The Arts and the World Economy, Color Codes, and The Saints of Modern Art. Dr. Riley’s next book, a study of Rodin in Chinese and English, will be published by the Chimei Museum in fall 2017. Among his many connections with exhibitions at Nassau County Museum, Dr. Riley is the author of monographs, most of them published by Abrams, on Ben Schonzeit, Fritz Bultman and Peter Max. A former Time Inc. reporter who covered the art market as well as Washington for Fortune, Dr. Riley’s articles have appeared in many major art publications including Art & Auction, Art & Antiques and Antiques and Fine Art. Remembrance Ceremony Set With the 16th Anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on America approaching, new Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town will honor the memory of all those who lost their lives that day by hosting a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Wednesday, September 6th, beginning at 7 p.m. at TOBAY Beach. Supervisor Saladino invites all residents, families and friends to attend.
“As we prepare to observe a national day of remembrance on September 11th, it is important that we commemorate this day, as the passage of time does not diminish the tragedy that our nation suffered 16 years ago,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “Together, we will pay tribute to those we lost that tragic morning and honor the bravery and heroism demonstrated by first responders.” The Town’s 9/11 Memorial is inscribed with the names of Town of
Oyster Bay residents lost on September 11st, 2001. The Memorial features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center. The September 6th ceremony includes a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, bagpipe music and religious readings. In addition, the names of those lost, who are inscribed on the wall, will be read. New Facilities Director
The North Bellmore School District recently announced the appointment of Robert Rafferty as the new director of facilities. He replaces Frank Russo, who retired after nine years. Mr. Rafferty brings more than 30 years of construction and facilities management experience in both the public and
private sector. He most recently worked as the director of facilities for the Hempstead Union Free School District. Previous posts include regional director in the School Facilities Division for the New York City Department of Education, director of facilities for St. Francis College, superintendent of building and grounds
for the City University of New York and construction manager for the Port Authority. The Patchogue resident holds a bachelor’s degree from Stony Brook University and numerous professional certifications. In North Bellmore, he will oversee the upkeep of the district’s buildings and grounds, supervise the custodial and maintenance staff, and coordinate with contractors performing work at the schools. “We take pride in keeping our schools clean, comfortable and safe,” Superintendent Marie Testa said. “It’s what our students, teachers, staff and visitors expect and deserve. New Director Named
The East Meadow Union Free School District is pleased to appoint Dr. Christopher Hale as its director of music and art, effective July 1st, 2017. From 2007-2017, Dr. Hale taught music at East Meadow High School, where he founded and directed the percussion ensemble, steel band and grades 10-12 concert band. During this time, he led the high school marching band, comprised of more than 200 students, to four successful Walt Disney World trips and nine New York City Columbus Day Parades. He was involved in the high school musical for six seasons as pit orchestra conductor and most recently as musical director. Dr. Hale advanced to the role of music department chairperson at East Meadow High School in 2015. In this
role, he performed observations and held conferences with teachers to improve instructional and professional practices for students in grades 9-12. He also planned and supervised trips around the country, handled finances for the department and oversaw community outreach projects. Under his direction, the East Meadow High School Wind Ensemble was invited to perform at the 2016 New York State School Music Association Winter Conference. This was the first time since 1965 that the high school wind ensemble had earned this honor. While working as a music educator, Dr. Hale also served as president of the Nassau Music Educators Association from 20142016, overseeing 900 members and 100
teacher-volunteers, and administering programs that serve more than 3,500 students nationwide. He managed a $380,000 annual budget, wrote and produced a bimonthly membership newsletter and was responsible for contracting rehearsal and performance space at the Tilles Center, Molloy College and at several local school districts. Dr. Hale holds a Bachelor of Music in music education from the University of North Texas and a master’s degree in wind conducting from Hofstra University. Putting on a Show Fourth-, fifthand sixth-grade students from the Merrick Union Free School District exercised their theatrical talents during this year’s Summer Recreation Program as they honed their acting skills with challenging activities and a performance of the original play, “Life is a Highway.” Together students participated in “Mannequin Challenges” where they were instructed to freeze in different poses
that correlated with the given scenario. Among the scenarios, they acted out were snack time, a slumber party, a haunted house, a beach and a day in New York City. District teacher Shira Voulgarakis and summer recreation teacher Robert Sarnowski oversaw the drama section of the Summer Recreation Program. Culminating the student’s drama activities was a performance of “Life is a Highway.” The
