Will I be able to abandon the abundance of letters Those collected for over years and years? Filled with thoughts of long forgotten matters Speaking about hopes, wishes and fears. They had gotten stashed in numerous files To bridge between my mother and me The distance of over three thousand miles To where I had now chosen my life to be. Avid letter writers we both always were Each letter about days in our lives does read For with each other we wanted to share What was important then and now obsolete. I leaf thru some of the letters out of sentiment It feels as if a conversation is taking place Because they are written in my mother’s own hand An aura of her being with me forms an embrace. I have neither time nor the will to read them all The past is gone, for memory I just keep some Guilt grips me when into the garbage I let many fall It is sad, but out of place they did become. Now the future demands my full attention The present from the seeds of old times has grown To nurture it for the next generation is my attention What the past once held, now in my soul I own.
A group of residents at Sun Harbor Nursing Home in Roslyn chose to dedicate their time and money to support the Warriors for a Cause organization, a local nonprofit that consists of men and women from all walks of life, who band together to support causes that are close to their hearts. This organization proudly supports the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, which helps the community in many ways. A significant program this foundation runs is their Smart Home Program. With this,
they build mortgage-free smart homes for the most catastrophically injured service members. Each home is custom-designed to address the needs of each person. Smart homes have various features such as automated doors and lighting, wider halls and doorways, special showers to accommodate wheelchairs, automatic door openers, stove tops that can be raised and lowered, backup generators and central heating and air conditioning systems that can be controlled by tablets. These homes allow

Resilience radiated from Kenneth Abbott, a Grand Avenue Middle School earth science teacher from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District, as he competed in numerous athletic events this August at the 2018 Life Transplant Games of America in Salt Lake City,
Utah. Just a year and a half after receiving a life-saving heart transplant, Abbott competed in multiple challenging physical events and excelled in the process. The Donate Life Transplant Games is a multi-sport festival event that highlights the critical
importance of donations and celebrates organ donors and recipients. During the event, Abbott competed in basketball, cycling, racquetball, swimming, track and field, trivia and long jump where he earned a bronze medal in his age group. In addition, Abbott finished fourth in the virtual triathlon where competitors faced off in cycling, running and swimming events on three separate days. Abbott plans to continue as a competitor at the Summer World Transplant Games in Newcastle, England in 2019 and the 2020 Donate Life Transplant Games of America at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Together, these two organizations successfully built Long Island’s first smart home, which was given to Long Island’s Army veteran, Chris Levi. Levi, a true hero, lost both of his legs while serving in Iraq. On Sunday, August 5th, these residents of Sun Harbor gathered around and received a visit from members of Warriors for a Cause, as well as Mr. Levi himself. It was truly an inspirational day.
Marching band students High School and General High School gathered from both Division Avenue Douglas MacArthur together to participate in a week-long recreational marching band camp from Aug. 6-10. Mementos
The stories that unfold in the space of a writer’s study, the objects chosen to watch over a desk, the books selected to sit on the shelves, all weave a web of echoes and reflections of meanings and affections, that lend a visitor the illusion that something of the owner of this space lives on between these walls, even if the owner is no more. {Alberto Manguel} From the day I began working at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers some 13-plus years ago, my desk and the meticulousness with which I chose to decorate, maintain and arrange it has been a topic of some fascination among my coworkers, the joke being that if someone dared to move a pencil or paper clip even a fraction of an inch, I would notice immediately. While this may be a bit extreme, the characterization is pretty darn close. I have always subscribed to the mantra of “a place for everything, and everything in its place,” mostly because I felt the sense of
organization allowed me to better focus on the {many} tasks at hand in the fast-paced, deadlinedriven environment of a weekly publication. Folders and filing systems aside, though, the true character is represented by the many knick-knacks and personal touches which accent my area. Only now, as I prepare to pack up my belongings at the close of the month {a task I intend to put off until the very last moment, as we can’t have things looking “empty” for even a day}, have I really taken the time to appreciate all the memories associated with these special tokens accumulated through the years. There is the mug given to me by my mentor and very special friend Peter, who saw fit to take me under his wing from day one and gently nudge me into the spotlight with what would become the makings of this very column. There is the silk floral arrangement from my Mom, with the hand-written note, “A little touch of springtime for your desk, along with wishes for many happy days at your new
job,” a fixture from the very beginning. There is the photo of my friend Rose on our very first trip to Adventureland, her face a mixture of exhilaration and horror, as we careened down the famous log flume, holding on for dear life. And of course, there is the framed plate of my 500th column, published on March 11th, 2015, a testament to the longevity I never imagined I or the column - would achieve when I set foot in our old office on May 2nd, 2005. One move and another small renovation later, the layout of my desk and office space may have changed, but the memories have traveled with me, giving rise to many new ones made along the way. In just a few short weeks, the desk will be empty, the personal touches gone for good, relegated to a storage box in the back seat of my car for a time - until a better, more permanent home can be found. Things, as we know, are replaceable. It is the stories behind them which live on forever.
TrueCare, Inc. recently celebrated its 1st Anniversary as a part of the Massapequa community. Owner/Director Carol Bottiglieri is planning an Open House Celebration, to be announced soon. TrueCare is a senior daycare facility located in Massapequa. They serve the needs of the elderly, especially those with dementia and Alzheimers. The staff is professional, experienced and compassionate. Carol Bottiglieri is the founder, owner and onsite director of daily activities. She is a long-time resident of Massapequa and parishioner of St. Rose of Lima Church. After many years serving as a director of human resources, Carol became a caregiver for her own family members. Her love of the elderly
led her to work for Senior Helpers in Garden City. Eventually, Carol realized that there is a great need for quality eldercare and started partnering with families to care for their senior relatives. After nine years of caring oneon-one, Carol realized that more needed to be done to socialize the elderly. This led to the founding of TrueCare. The philosophy at TrueCare is that seniors with dementia and Alzheimers do better in an environment that includes peer-to-peer socialization, structured activities, exercise and healthy meals. They also realize the need for caregivers to have time away in order to take care of their own needs. TrueCare provides daily activities including crafts, games, exercise classes and events such as dog and
kitten therapy, chair yoga, hairstylist/barber, manicurist, sing-a-longs, magician, vintage cars, etc. They also offer caregiver support groups and Alzheimer’s workshops for spouses and children. TrueCare is open Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. - extended hours and weekends are available upon request. They accept full and part-time clients. Reading Extravaganza Students throughout the Levittown Public Schools filled the Levittown Public Library for the district’s Summer Reading Extravaganza discussion days during summer break. Incoming fifthgraders recently gathered to engage in an activity fit for their summer reading book “Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library” by Chris Grabenstein, while middle school students recently joined together to participate in activities related to their book “Because of Mr. Terupt” by Rob Buyea. The district created the Summer Reading Extravaganza program to encourage students to read during the summer months and to initiate conversation with others about the content. Faculty members, principals, high school National Honor Society students and the Levittown Public Library staff assisted with the events. During the fifthgrade activity, students practiced collaboration with the goal to “escape” the library like the characters in their book. Together, the students solved puzzles in a race against the clock, in an
effort to crack the code on their lock box and access the key. During the middle school reading event, students from both Wisdom Lane and Jonas E. Salk middle schools participated in a variety of activities relating to the characters in their story and focused on multiple intelligences. Each character has a strength, just like each student. With that idea in mind, the students were tasked to reflect on their own intelligences and complete a survey that determined their strengths whether it be with words, numbers, pictures, music, people, self, body or nature. They then created a bar graph showcasing their results and formed groups with others who shared their strength. The group formation allowed students to get to know each other as they worked on a project related to the book and their intelligence. Library staff members and Levittown graduates, Maylin Rivera, Division Avenue High School Class of 2018 and Maria Vitali, MacArthur High School Class of 2015, assisted with the middle school event and were impressed with
how engaged the students were. “I think reading is so important and I feel like the students are getting more out of their books with this program,” said Rivera. “They’re very happy to be here.
