visit last October 29th, the legislation has been periodically extended and the most recent renewal continues the waiver period through December 31st. “Nearly a year since Sandy stormed through town, we are continuing to offer a helping hand to those people still struggling to rebuild their lives and restore their possessions,” added Supervisor Murray. “In difficult times like these, government should be an ally not an adversary. As long as residents need our assistance, we will be there for them, sharing our resources and extending our cooperation.” In the Building Department, all town fees are waived for Sandy-related structural repairs that confirm to original dimensions and specifications, commonly referred to as “in-kind” repairs/replacement. Additionally, all town

fees have been waived for temporary housing trailers and storage pods during construction. Furthermore, the town has eliminated a requirement for homeowners to obtain a variance prior to increasing their home’s foundation to comply with FEMA flood height standards. In the Office of the Town Clerk, residents who lost important documents during Hurricane Sandy such as certificates and passports will not have to pay the town fees for replacement copies. Though appointments are not necessary, town residents planning to visit the Building Department on Sandy related issues are urged to call ahead of time at 516.812.3073 to minimize waiting-times. A Time To Celebrate By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Birthdays. Some people love them, others despise that annual reminder that, like it or not, time is flying by – with or without you. Personally, I’ve always been a fan – not on the my-birthday-should-be-anational-holiday scale, but definitely as an occasion that I’ve looked forward to each year. It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, and to show your appreciation to others when their special days come around. Too often, we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to acknowledge those who

play such an important role. Sure, those milestones can serve as not-so-subtle reminders that, hey, the clock is ticking – didn’t you have all sorts of things you wanted to accomplish by now?!? Better get to it! But I think those thoughts can creep in at any age, young, old or in between. We set hypothetical deadlines for when things “have” to be done, knowing full well that life rarely works out so perfectly. The best we can do is move forward, making a little progress along the way, pausing to celebrate and appreciate those things

– and people – who matter most. The rest – the gray hairs, the wrinkles, the aches and pains – they’re just normal wear and tear from a life well lived! So the next time a birthday comes along, milestone or not, try to enjoy it. Appreciate those who wish to appreciate you, and remember to pay it forward when their own special occasions come along. It’s nice to be remembered, and better than that – it’s nice to wake up to a brand new day - or year - with lots to look forward to.

The Long Island Game Farm recently received a hammock made out of a used fire hose that was created by a retired firefighter for the Game Farm’s gibbons. The gibbons, who are sisters, immediately started enjoying their new hammock once it was installed in their cage. Tom Lambui, a retired fireman and husband of Stacy Lambui, who works in the Game Farm’s Customer Service Department, acquired an old fire hose from Anthony J. Morabito, Service Representative, Firematic Supply Co. in East Yaphank. Mr. Lambui built the new hammock and presented it to the Game Farm for the gibbons to use. “We are so thankful

for Tom’s generous gift,” says Melinda Novak, Vice P r e s i d e n t / C o - O w n e r, Long Island Game Farm. “We recently installed the hammock and the gibbon sisters immediately started enjoying it. It’s really wonderful!” A gibbon is a part of the ape family, and spends the majority of its time in trees. Gibbons range in color from gray and black to brown. They have extremely long arms which help them balance and settle as they jump from tree to tree. They can jump more than 25 feet and land fairly easily. Rebuilding Together and the American Red Cross have joined forces to help bring nearly 90 homes devastated by Hurricane Sandy back to safe and healthy housing conditions. Thanks to a $2.25 million grant from the American Red Cross to Rebuilding Together, these low-income homeowners can look forward to rebuilding their lives and returning to their communities. Rebuilding Together’s local affiliates and volunteers in New York City, Long Island, Bergen County and Jersey City will be providing free critical home repairs in many of the areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. Most of the homes will require modifications and repairs that may address electrical and plumbing issues, flooring, drywall, appliance replacements, painting, basement and

exterior rehabilitation with the goal of ensuring all of the homes are safe, healthy and livable. Those eligible for services include lowincome families, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and veterans. “We greatly appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with the Red Cross in the long term recovery of communities devastated by Hurricane Sandy,” said John L. Fiegel, interim president and CEO of Rebuilding Together. “Senior citizens and lowincome homeowners are among the most vulnerable in times of disaster and we are honored to be a partner with the Red Cross to help nearly 90 families get back on their feet.” As of July 2013, hardworking Rebuilding Together affiliates in New York City, Long Island, Bergen County, Jersey City, and Essex County have already completed

more than 200 projects, assisting more than 375 families or individuals with the help of over 2,000 volunteers. “Recovery from a storm of this size takes time and help from many different organizations, not just the Red Cross, and we are pleased to support the programs of Rebuilding Together and other partners, and to continue to work with them to help people with their recovery,” said Jerry DeFrancisco, president of Humanitarian Services at the Red Cross. “We can help people and communities in a more comprehensive way when we pool our resources and services together in a coordinated way. This not only speeds recovery, but helps us engage the entire community in building the resilience we need as we face disasters of this type in the future.”

Registration is now underway for the 33rd Annual Stop World Hunger Tennis Tournament. The tournament is open to tennis players who have not qualified to play in this year’s U.S. Open Tennis Tournament. Intermediate (3.0-3.5), advanced intermediate (3.5-4.0), and advanced (4.0-4.5+) players from more than forty Long Island communities are

expected to participate. The purpose of the tennis tournament is to provide an enjoyable recreational activity, while helping those in desperate need. All entry fees and donations are forwarded to Catholic Relief Services to assist in their efforts to feed God’s hungry children throughout the world. Assistance is provided where the need is greatest,

regardless of race, religion and/or nationality. Events consist of men’s singles, women’s singles, men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The cost is $6 for singles and $10 for doubles. Participants schedule their own matches at mutally convenient times and sites. All matches are to be played between September 14th and November 16th. The

Summer Prep Work Pays Dividends

As summer comes to a close, many teens find it easy to get caught up in the stress and monotony associated with school. Some find it even easier to give up on the coursework assigned during the summer break. Reading all of the books and doing all of the mathematics packets may seem like the least desirable option during these warm months, but it is undoubtably the most crucial. Summer homework does not bring many students joy. Summer homework does, however have an enormous impact on your grades. Missing this first assignment can be detrimental to your first

quarter average. In an era where college admissions are at an all time high in selectivity, those few points can make or break a person. Something as small as forgetting to turn in that book report freshman year can, in time, prevent you from attaining your dreams. With this in mind, it is an absolute necessity to complete your work! Even if school hasn’t yet started, the choices you make can affect your standing in September. In my school, your summer work accounts for about 20% of your first quarter grade! That means, if you were to get a zero on that work, you could get a maximum of only eighty.

Study hard now, so you won’t have to the night before school starts. Doing a little bit of work each night will undoubtably make your last few days of summer more enjoyable. Even though reading a book or doing some math problems may seem like a terrible time, every moment you spend will be repaid when you get into the college of your dreams. Putting in the extra effort now will result in a positive outcome in the future. On the other hand, slacking during your summers will only haunt you. Take the first step towards a superior grade - do your summer homework!

Registration Tees Off comradery awaits the lucky field of golfers chosen by lottery for this year’s tournament.” For an entry fee of $15, golfers (selected by lottery) will enjoy 18 holes of tournament golf, a bucket of balls for the driving range, continental breakfast, afternoon barbeque, motorized golf cart, oncourse refreshments, goody bag, awards and photographs. Tournament contests include a “Four Player Scramble,” “Men’s & Women’s Closest to the Pin,” “Men’s & Women’s Most Accurate Drive” and “Men’s & Women’s Longest Drive.”

Tee-off time on October 2nd is 10 a.m. and the rain date is set for Wednesday, October 16th. Completed applications must be returned in person, postmarked or faxed before midnight, Friday, September 6th. Applications can be obtained at the Town of Hempstead Parks Department, 200 North Franklin Street, Hempstead, New York 11550. Applications will also be available online at TOH.LI. The Lido and Merrick Road Park Golf Courses will have applications on hand as well as will most Hempstead Town parks.

Completed applications may be returned in person or by mail to the Parks Administration Building in Hempstead or by fax to 516.292.6024. There is only one application allowed per person and your name cannot appear on more than one entry application. Supervisor’s Cup participants will be chosen by lottery on Thursday, September 12th at 1 p.m. in the Clubhouse of the Merrick Road Park Golf Course. The public is cordially invited to attend the lottery drawing. Players whose names are drawn in the lottery will have five days to submit payment

following their notification of entry. The lottery will select 140 golfers and 20 alternates. Selected names will be posted on the town web site at TOH. LI and winners will also be notified by phone and e-mail. Golfers may register as a single, or in a twosome, threesome or foursome. Selected golfers will be required to make payments in the form of check or money order to the Town of Hempstead. On the day of the event, golfers will be asked to present photo identification at the morning’s check-in. Golfers who are selected as alternates are invited to

attend the breakfast and enjoy the driving range practice as they await the possibility of being added to the field in the event one or more golfers do not attend.
