Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts opened its 48th season on June 29th. Featuring more than 60 programs, it is annually attended by students from Long

Island, New York City and additional neighborhoods throughout the Tri-State Area. Usdan has introduced the arts to more than 60,000 young people since its inaugural season in 1968. The Center is situated on a magnificent 200-acre woodland campus in the Town of Huntington, Long Island, and is open to all young people from ages 5 to 18. A hallmark of Usdan’s mission is its tradition of welcoming all students based solely on their expression of interest in the arts, as no audition is required for most courses. The Center offers programs in music, dance, theater, visual arts, creative writing, nature and ecology, and chess, in flexible 3, 4 and 7-week sessions. Although the mission of the Center is for every child to establish a relationship with the arts, the unique stimulation of the Center has caused many to go on to arts careers. Alumni include Natalie Portman, Mariah Carey, jazz star Jane Monheit, Seth Rudetsky, Jackie Hoffman, Olivia Thirlby, Taylor Dane and members of Broadway shows and major music, theater, and dance ensembles such as the New York Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic and the New York City Ballet. For the fifth year, talented Long Island music students have received a unique opportunity to study and perform at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts. The program was developed by Usdan Center in 2011 and supported with a charitable grant from Bethpage Federal Credit Union. The Usdan Center/Bethpage Scholars in the Arts program gives accomplished students, who otherwise couldn¹t attend Usdan, the opportunity to study at the country¹s largest notfor-profit summer arts day camp. The students were chosen for their fine musicianship and for their achievements as outstanding representatives of their communities. Among the many interesting titles that were featured included Director Brooke Wagstaff’s animated film and Award-winning Vimeo Staff Pick “Missing U”; an animated tale about the letter “I” and her perilous adventure in search of her missing “U”. As a Long Island highlight, Director Peter Frizalone’s HBO Project Greenlight Top 200 “Mommy” made its World Premiere begging the question “Do you know who is in your house?” Other films shown included Director Chris Jordan-Bloch’s documentary on an evergrowing world issue “Dryden - The Small Town That Changed the Fracking Game” where the power of community takes on the power of fracking; Director/ Producer Stephanie Donnelly’s narrative/ comedy “The Cannoli” where a Long Island family dinner turns tragic and a choice must be made between dessert and family; Director Sarah Menzies’ San Diego Surf Film Festival Best Short winning documentary “Catch It”, which follows Léa Brassy as her nomadic lifestyle takes a pause and she finds serenity in the Arctic surf of Northern Norway; and Croatian Director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanovi’s World Premiere of “Eye for an Eye”, in which child’s play turns into a

showdown of imagination and discipline. Long Beach International Film Festival Programmer Steve Shor recently said of the event, “The Shorts on the Beach program is a wonderful representation of what is in store for the Long Beach International Film Festival in September. The program opened with the Oscar winning short Feast from Walt Disney Animation. Additional animated shorts included Deep End by Oscar nominee Bill Plympton and Bear Story- a Chilean computer animated short (considered one of the best this year). In the short documentary arena, we had Trust Design by Interior Design Magazine and Dryden by EarthJustice. Finally, the program included some wonderful Narrative submissions from New York based directors and Universities”. The Festival will

celebrate its 4th anniversary this year from September 24th through 27th and will screen an international slate of films, including feature-length narrative, documentary, short and animated that will compete for a series of Jury, Festival Honors and Audience Awards. A new addition for 2015 LBIFF includes the Joan Jett Music Film Series. There will also be exhibiting films in the categories of Action Sports, Environmental, Art & Family. On Friday, August 7th, the Long Beach International Film Festival took the concept of “Dinner and a Movie” to a whole new level, adding the spectacular “Taste on the Beach” event to their widely respected Shorts on the Beach series. Beginning at 5 p.m. with a red carpet, over 4000 attendees (and a DRONE filming overhead!) reveled in the summer heat at what was billed as the biggest beach party of the summer; checking out the latest in independent short films and live musical performances while sampling the finest local food, wine & craft beers in an intimate theatre setting right on the beach. Festival goers ended the evening with a fantastic rooftop after party at the nearby Alegria Hotel. This is 33 By: Jamie Lynn Ryan By the time you read this, I will have celebrated my 33rd birthday, as momentous an occasion as any, if you ask me. Because, really, every year is a milestone in its own right, a small commemoration of our respective lives as they stand at a given moment in time. Sure, nice round numbers generate parties and extensive recognition; but who’s to say that one year is more significant than the last, or the ones yet to come? As I write this, I am still two days away from officially marking the transition from 32 to 33, but in some ways, I feel like it’s already come and gone. Have you ever noticed that, when someone

asks your age, there is usually a subtle point in time when you’ve mentally moved on? Slightly over the halfway point, “I just turned 32” becomes “I’ll be 33,” and the years somehow meld together as one giant expanse of time. What’s the rush? In my case, anytime my age has occasion to be mentioned, it is usually met with incredulous looks and exclamations of, No way! You’re lying… You can’t be older than 25, maybe. Well, that would be nice and all, but no – I’ve been a member of the 30+ club for a few years now, and I’m still not quite certain what makes that fact so unbelievable to outsiders. Of course, so I’m told,

there will come a day – not too far down the line – where I will learn to greatly appreciate this misconception, and savor the countless times I am asked for I.D. (for scratchoff tickets and Rated-R movies, no less), but not today. Today, I am proud to be (almost) 33, and willing to embrace all that comes with this next year, this next milestone. If we’ve learned anything, it’s that we cannot unwind the clock. Time passes, people come and go, and each day is truly a gift. Neither dwelling on the past nor wishing for the future will change the present. And what a “present” it is. Happy “Day” to all, every day. See you on the flip side.

Are you ready for some football? If so, then come to “Family Football Night” at John J. Burns Town Park in Massapequa on Tuesday August 25th, at 7:00 p.m. Football fans are sure to enjoy the event which features a collegiate scrimmage of the LIU Post Pioneers. “This is a great event where football fans are close to the action,” Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor John Venditto said. ”LIU Post has many talented players and it’s very impressive to watch the team’s knowledgeable coaches, led by Head Coach Bryan Collins, work with the players during a scrimmage. It’s a unique perspective that everyday fans don’t get a chance to see on television.” Admission will be free for Town residents, but all attendees are encouraged to bring two cans of food, which will be donated to Island Harvest to benefit the fight against hunger. The event will be preceded

by a youth clinic, which is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Players and coaches from LIU Post will instruct youth football players on proper and safe tackling techniques. “The student athletes on the LIU Post football team serve as true role models for the many young players in attendance,” Supervisor Venditto said. “Perhaps one day, these youngsters will also be able to further their academics though athletics.” There will also be a barbeque following the scrimmage where youth players will have an opportunity to speak with the LIU players and coaches and receive autographs. “This scrimmage is always a fun night for the players and I know the team is looking forward to coming to John J, Burns Park in Massapequa for this year’s event,” LIU Post Head Coach Bryan Collins said. “This is an important night for our team as we prepare for the season.” Last season, the Pioneers

finished with a record of 8-4 and made their first appearance in the NCAA Tournament in nearly ten years. This year, they are looking to build on that success. “The Town of Oyster Bay is pleased to support the sport of football, which is extremely popular in the Town of Oyster Bay as it is throughout the country,” said Supervisor Venditto. “It’s great to have an outstanding college team like LIU Post playing on one of our fields. The Town of Oyster Bay has been acclaimed for having some of the finest parks in the Nation, and that is further supported by having LIU Post hold a scrimmage at John J. Burns Park. The young athletes who play on our fields are thrilled that they play on the same facilities as those who may someday play professionally.” John J. Burns Park is located at 5158 Merrick Road in Massapequa.

The American Heart Association is proud to have Gabriella Lisboa serving as the 2015 Long Island Heart Walk “Red Cape” Ambassador. This year’s Long Island Heart Walk will be taking place on Sunday, September 20th, at Jones Beach. Gabriella was just 6 months old when she was diagnosed with DCRV (Double Chamber of Right Ventricle) and had to have two open heart surgeries when she was nine months old. Today, she is a happy and healthy and has made it her mission to raise money and awareness for the American Heart Association so that they can do more research and educate others so that there are more survivors like her. At the Heart Walk, survivors are celebrated. A “Red Cap” is a red baseball cap featuring the American Heart Association logo. “Red Caps” refer to survivors of heart attack, cardiac arrest or heart surgery who wear the red caps as a symbol of their survival while walking in the Heart Walk. “White Caps” will be distributed to stroke survivors the day of the walk. Pediatric cardiovascular disease survivors will receive red super hero capes to acknowledge their courage. Hundreds of survivors from across Long Island participate to show that heart disease and stroke can be beaten. The American Heart Association estimates there are more than 71 million Americans alive with one or more types of cardiovascular disease. As Red Cape Ambassador for the Long Island Heart Walk, Gabriella will help create awareness about the importance of survivors participating in the event and to create awareness that heart disease and

stroke aren’t “just an older man’s diseases.” On Sunday, September 20th, join our “Red Cape” Ambassador and thousands of other survivors, families and friends from all over Long Island at the Long Island Heart Walk at Jones Beach, Field 5. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures

Birch Family Services, a New York City non-profit organization is hosting its 3rd Annual 5K Race at the Hudson River Park on November 7th, at 12 p.m. This event will benefit the 1,500 children and adults with autism and other developmental disabilities that Birch serves daily

throughout NYC. The race will start and finish at Pier 64 at West 24th Street and the Hudson River. Registration is available at www. birchfamilyservices.org or at 12 p.m. on the day of the race. The tax-deductible registration fee is $31.50 for all participants.

Following the race awards presentation, all runners and supporters are invited to join the after party at Jake’s Saloon, 206 West 23rd Street. The Birch 5k fun run will bring together the NYC community at-large to celebrate and support people with special needs.

Nutrition Tips for Families It’s that time again. Time to think about reading, writing, and arithmetic. But are you thinking about school lunches? If not, you might want to give it some thought. Lunch represents one third of the food consumed by students each day. And today, one in three children and adolescents, ages 2-19 are overweight or obese. Providing healthy options during lunchtime can set positive patterns and habits for a lifetime to come. The American Heart Association offers tips and heart-healthy ideas for your student.

• Keep it simple. Portable and pre-sliced items are usually preferred by kids. Try sliced cucumbers, fruit slices such as apples or pears, and strive for a variety of colors and textures to keep it interesting. • Make it interesting. Individual dips such as hummus, peanut butter (without added sugars and salt) are great with celery, sliced sweet peppers or whole grain crackers. Apples and pear slices with non-fat plain yogurt is a great heart-healthy

option for a sweet tooth. • Make a smarter sandwich. Use different breads like 100% whole grain breads, tortilla wraps and whole wheat pita pockets. They are more nourishing and are the better choice over white breads. • Make it fun. When the kids are bored with their sandwiches, cutting them in to shapes is an easy way to make it interesting again. Cookie cutters can be used to cut shapes and chances are you already have them

in the kitchen. • Family time. Planning and preparing lunches together gives kids the opportunity to talk about their food choices and learn about nutritious decisions. By helping in the kitchen they are more likely to eat it and it’s a great way to spend time together as a family. • Stay fresh. Avoiding packaged foods will cut down on the amount of sodium your kids consume. For example, instead of canned fruit or fruit snack packs in syrup – make a fresh

fruit salad. • They’re Sweet enough. Limit added sugars. Sugar-sweetened beverages are the largest source of added sugars. Soda, sports drinks and energy drinks and fruit drinks are full of sugar. Look for low sugar alternatives, but plain water is the best choice. Now that you have your kids making and eating healthier choices, make sure they are staying active. Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for developing coronary artery

disease. The American Heart Association recommends all children age 2 and older should participate in at least 60 minutes of enjoyable, moderateintensity physical activities every day. This can easily be broken down to two 30-minute periods or even four 15-minute periods. Inactive children are likely to become inactive adults, so get them moving today for a healthier tomorrow.
