Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members. All of their members are volunteers and very few of them are professional machinists, most of them are hobbyists. The uniting interest for them lies in steam power, railroad and having fun! Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays are “scheduled” work days, where members come together and work on whatever needs to be done at that time. However, members can be found working on equipment and projects throughout their free time! LI Live Steamers offers various types of memberships; Junior Membership, for those 16-18 years old, Full Membership, for those over 18 years of age, and Family Membership! Membership starts at only $50/year and there is a one time initiation fee of $100. Please note, only full members can qualify to operate club trains.
If you would like to attend the next public run day, it will take place on Sunday, August 29th. There is no charge for rides on public run days, however they accept donations of any size. Looking to host a birthday party at LI Live Steamers? You can! Reservations must be made to reserve a birthday party with the LI Live Steamers, however there is no limit to how many people can attend. Attendees can bring their own food and/or cake (pizza parties are popular) and the organization provides picnic tables, that when sitting at you will have a great view of the action as multiple trains pass by! Long Island Live Steamers is in need of volunteer electricians, grounds-keepers, carpenters, signal maintainers and many other skilled individuals. Members are assigned to various duties during public run days, which are typically scheduled for the second and last Sundays of each month from the middle of May through the end of October. The hours of operation during a public run day are 10:30AM-3PM. Some positions a member may be assigned are Ticket Booth Attendants, Ticket Takers, Station Masters and Souvenir Stand Attendants. Members are also encouraged to help out on scheduled “work days” with various tasks, such as landscaping and track work.

That could affect which school supplies families buy in the weeks to come. Here’s a look at some of the latest trends. • A shift from physical stores: According to data from IBM’s U.S. Retail Index, the pandemic has accelerated a shift away from physical stores to digital shopping by about five years. The Benefits Of Leisure Activities Leisure activities may be widely viewed as fun ways to fill up free time, but the benefits of leisure activities extend beyond beating boredom. A 2011 analysis published in the journal BBA Molecular Basis of Disease found that leisure activities have a positive impact on
cognitive function and dementia. The analysis, conducted by researchers with the Aging Research Center in Stockholm who examined various studies regarding the relationship between certain activities and cognitive function, defined leisure activity
as the voluntary use of free time for activities outside the home. After retirement, leisure time constitutes a large part of many retirees’ lives, and finding ways to fill that time is more beneficial than merely avoiding boredom. The researchers behind the
study concluded that the existing research is insufficient to draw any firm conclusions regarding the effects of certain types of leisure activities on the risk for dementia and cognitive decline, though they did note that multi-domain cognitive training has
the potential to improve cognitive function in healthy older adults and slow decline in affected individuals. A multi-domain approach to cognitive training involves memory, reasoning, problemsolving, and map reading, among other
activities. Aging adults who embrace activities that require the use of such skills may find that they’re not only finding stimulating ways to fill their free time, but increasing their chances of long-term cognitive health as well.

As exciting as campus life can be, it also can be a bit nervewracking for students who have never before had to fend for themselves. Administrators and security personnel work to make school environments as safe as possible, but incidents can happen on any campus. A recent report from Campus Safety and Security, there were 38,100 reported criminal offenses, including burglary and identity theft, on college campuses in the United States in 2017.

The triathlon is scheduled for September 25, 2021 at 8AM and will be held at Town Park Point Lookout, located at 1300 Lido Boulevard, Lido Beach, along the township’s south shore. The roughly 14-mile signature athletic event will allow participants to enjoy the beautiful coastal environs of America’s largest township while competing to be the firstplace finisher in the widely acclaimed competition. “The Town of Hempstead Triathlon is an amazing opportunity for fitness enthusiasts to enjoy our township’s beautiful south shore while competing in this three part competition,” said Clavin. “I encourage all who wish to try their hand at completing this challenging feat to register now and join in on the fun.” The Town of Hempstead Triathlon, which comprises three separate events, will challenge participants during the roughly 14mile course. A recent report from the Fairfax County Public Schools Office of Research and Strategic Improvement in Virginia found the number of middle and high school students with two or more failing marks increased by 83 percent in the first quarter of the 2020-2021 school year compared to the year prior, but students’ grades may slide or they may find certain school work overly challenging even in normal years. Since many parents have not seen a periodic table or had to solve high school math problems in decades, tutors may be just what students need to regain their academic footing. Each state and school district is different, but a 2013 report from the National Association of State Boards of Education found that federal funding for arts and humanities programs totaled roughly $250 million a year, while the National Science Foundation received around $5 billion annually. Arts and sciences are both important, and parents can support legislation that directs more federal funding for the arts while urging local legislators to direct more money to arts education. • Make art a part of life at home. Hempstead Town Announces The Return Of The Child Safety ID Program
As preserving the quality of life for residents in America’s largest township is a top priority for Town of Hempstead officials, nothing is more important than safeguarding and protecting our children. Supervisor Don Clavin and Town Clerk Kate Murray have announced the return of an initiative that provides parents with a comprehensive identification kit that holds specific attributes of their child that can be used in case a child goes missing. “The Child Safety ID Program has enjoyed great success at the Town of Hempstead for a number of years,” Supervisor Clavin stated. “We hope that no parent has to endure a missing child, but if they do, this kit can greatly assist policing protocols in a timely manner.” This summer, parents and children may visit our Child Safety ID Program at scheduled locations throughout the town, or make an appointment to visit the Town Clerk’s Office at Hempstead Town Hall to complete their ID kit. Fingerprinting and photographing services are provided free of charge by specially trained Town Clerk Office staff. The identification kit includes space to record medical information, dental records and other personal information for the child. Parents can also
affix several strands of the child’s hair to maintain a DNA sample. In addition, the kit provides many safety tips to help your child become aware of signs that could indicate possible danger. Town of Hempstead Community Concert Series with Shows Scheduled Across the Township It is time for residents to enjoy the sun and the music in the air as the Town of Hempstead brings back the free Summer Concert Series live and in person this year just in time for “Staycation.” Supervisor Don Clavin announced the kickoff of the expansive summer concert series which includes shows at community parks across America’s largest township.
