On Thursday, July 21st, 38 students who had been treated at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for childhood cancer, were the recipients of this year’s Dan Brooks Memorial Educational Award. The award ceremony took place at the Hilton Garden Inn on the Stony Brook University campus. The Dan Brooks Memorial Educational Award was first given in 2003 to four student patients. As of 2016, 324 awards totaling over $238,000 have been presented to 117 patients. This year there were 38 recipients, the largest group in the award’s history. Open to all graduates of the Pediatric Oncology Program at Stony Brook Children’s, this award helps with higher education costs, such as college or posthigh school vocational training. It was established in memory of Dan Brooks, a young man who completed treatment for leukemia at Stony Brook, but later died in an automobile accident. Inspired by his experience with childhood cancer, Dan went on to obtain his degree in special education so he could help children facing challenges and this award reflects his dedication to education. Stony Brook has received many accolades for this one-of-a-kind program as it offers eligible graduates from the Stony Brook pediatric cancer program a small monetary award designated for the child’s post-high school education. Over the warm and sunny summer months, students entering grades K-6 of the Merrick School District maintained their academic, social and emotional learning aptitudes through enriching and entertaining activities through the district’s Summer Recreation Program. The program, held at Birch School, accompanied close to 200 children and ran from June 28th to July 29th. Directors Melissa Robinson, Levy Lakeside sixth-grade teacher, and Kelley Merkle, Birch first-grade teacher, incorporated workshops

They also created unique friendship and personal bracelets with the help of The Lanyard Ladies and learned about science and math from visiting math scientists. During the last week of the program, students participated in field day activities and performance of their summer musical. On field day, students were divided among four teams, red, white, blue and green competing in relay races, tug of war and potato sack

races. As a culimination of the program, the drama class took to the stage for their musical “Ordinary Hero,” singing, dancing and acting for an audience of other students, parents, families and administration. On the final day of the program, children enjoyed a summer festival of carnival games, activities, inflatables and dancing while snacking on delicious popcorn and cotton candy, all graciously donated by board of education trustee Butch Yamali’s company, Dream Event Planning.

There is a pressing need to replenish our blood banks as hospitals

and patients are always in need of all blood types and platelets. Long Island Blood Services cannot meet its vital, life-saving mission without efforts such as the Town of Oyster Bay’s bi-annual blood drive which makes participation all the more urgent. On hand for the blood drive with Councilman Muscarella and Councilwoman Johnson

Of Birthdays & Bedtimes On another note, I think I may have been a bit hasty in ushering out my tank mate, Squeegee. Since his untimely (“accidental”) demise, my bowl has become increasingly overrun by algae build-up – on the rocks, the gravel, even my favorite plant leaf. My Human keeps unceremoniously dumping me into my original oh-so-tiny bowl while she cleans and rinses and dries the contents of my suite, but to no avail. Only a week or so later, and it’s time for another complete overhaul. Where’s my little vacuum snail when I need him?? Speaking of meals… I’ve decided that waiting for my flakes to drop is simply too much trouble. Instead, I prefer to lunge out of the water the second I see so much as the shadow of my Human’s hand. It’s much faster that way. Plus,

Well, dear readers, the calendar pages have just flown on by, landing on August – my Human’s birthday month, and, more importantly, my 18-month adoption anniversary. Seeing as I didn’t come with an official birth certificate, no one can be quite certain of my precise age, but we’ll assume I’ve been flitting around for at least a solid two years at this point. Not too shabby. My fins, on the other hand… Ah, but enough about me. My Human, so I’ve read, is hard at work on compiling a collection of her finest columns. Of course, I’m only interested in those that bear my name and stunning photo, but I suppose her accomplishments deserve a little recognition as well. Just a little. As long as I get a side book deal out of it.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, there were more overdose deaths in 2014 than any previous year on record, and the number of deaths involving opioids has quadrupled since 1999. From 2000 to 2014, nearly 500,000 people nationwide died from drug overdose. “No community is immune from the ravages of heroin abuse,” concluded Santino. “Armed with employees who are trained to administer Narcan, we can save lives and help people to take the first step in the road to recovery.”

Anthony was delivering mail along his route as a postal worker in Seaford Harbor last month when he noticed smoke coming from an air conditioning unit at the side of a home. He looked inside a window and saw flames. Anthony immediately dialed 911 and ensured that there was

no one inside the house. The Wantagh Fire Department quickly put out the fire and Anthony continued his mail delivery. Supervisor Santino and the Town Board were very proud to recognize this “Everyday Hero.”

My hope is that with more education and by spreading the word of the dangers of drug abuse, we can eliminate the need for this type of program.” Hempstead Town staff members have specialized qualifications and experience in dealing with medical emergencies through its Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) squad. The unit, based at the town’s oceanfront beaches, includes EMTs and advanced paramedics who respond to a host of safety and medical calls at the township’s beaches. These professionals can deal with issues such as heroin overdose, and they also have the training and credentials to interact with local hospitals and ambulance corps. They also possess lifeguard training, patrolling beaches for ocean rescues and related emergencies. After Town of Hempstead lifeguards saved an overdose victim earlier this year, the Supervisor wanted to ensure that the town’s first responders would continue to have access to life-saving medication. The Town of Hempstead has since been designated as an opioid overdose prevention trainer by the New York

Town of Hempstead Supervisor Anthony J. Santino and Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito distributed life-saving drug overdose prevention kits to key town personnel during a press conference at Town Park Point Lookout. The recipients of the kits were trained at a course sponsored by the New York State Opioid Overdose Program and Harm Reduction Coalition. The Narcan kits can quickly reverse the effects of a narcotic overdose and will combat heroin deaths. Narcan training and equipping the town’s emergency response with the opioid reversal drug are at the core of Santino’s effort to prevent heroin deaths. Town of Hempstead Medical Director Dr. Dave Neubert was also on hand to demonstrate how to use the Narcan kits. “Heroin abuse continues to devastate families across our town and our nation,” Santino said. “Training our Public Safety Officers and other emergency responders to administer Narcan can save a life and give a second chance to someone in need. Supervisor Anthony J. Santino, Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby and the Hempstead Town Board have approved two measures, clearing the last significant obstacles to the construction of the Memorial Sloan Kettering Regional Center Project on the property surrounding the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum. In specific, the Board approved the site plan for the planned outpatient treatment and cancer research facility, as well as an associated environmental review. “The Town Board’s commitment to progressive growth was demonstrated through approvals associated with the development of a world-class cancer treatment and research facility at Nassau’s HUB,” stated Santino. “This medical facility will be a welcomed addition to Hempstead Town. I am proud of the work

that town officials did in reviewing this proposal and moving it along in an expeditious manner.” The 140,000 squarefoot medical building will be located on the southwest portion of the Coliseum property. The development will also include a 452-space, 133,940 square-foot parking garage. “This project will address areas of genuine medical need in our area, and also support good jobs for our residents,” said Goosby. “I am happy to see this progressive project more forward.” The site plan offered by Sloan Kettering for the Board’s consideration detail the general footprint of planned development and the orientation of structures in relation to the overall site. Volunteer Training and October 5th, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the program’s offices on the Adelphi University Campus in Garden City. “We know that it is very helpful for a caller to our hotline to speak with someone who has been there,” says social worker Alida Rubenstein, the program’s hotline

coordinator. Once the volunteers complete their training, they are able to select hours that fit into their schedules. Their jobs will be to answer the hotline and provide information and emotional support to callers. They can also do outreach at community events.
