Meet Guy. He’s a local business owner, former rock bassist, and current fan of LEDs. It didn’t hurt that he got $5,900 in rebates to replace his store’s old lighting with energy-efficient fixtures.* He says his store and his guitars look great in the new LED glow. And, with the monthly energy cost savings, he couldn’t be happier. How can we help your small business save?

A Sweet Way To Say Thanks: Girl Scouts Of Nassau County Send Troops, Local Heroes Over 80,000 Cookie Packages

Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC), along with DHL Express, recently shipped more than 80,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies® to U.S. military personnel stationed both overseas and on Long Island, in addition to local first responders. Each box was donated by community members who purchased extra Girl Scout Cookies as part of Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s 18th annual Operation Cookie/Hometown Heroes campaign. GSNC, including several Girl Scouts from troops throughout Nassau County, were joined by elected officials and volunteers to help pack a portion of the 80,136 boxes into DHL’s truck, for delivery to locations around the world. The annual program offers a sweet taste of home and shows appreciation to U.S. military members and local doctors, nurses, police officers, ambulance workers

and firefighters.

“Each year, Girl Scouts selling cookies offer buyers the option to donate Girl Scout Cookies to our military troops overseas and local heroes and each year, the result is awe-inspiring,” said Randell Bynum, CEO of GSNC. “It’s amazing to see how many community members want to send their gratitude to our heroes abroad and at home. We hope the cookies bring them comfort and joy. We extend our gratitude to our partner DHL Express and everyone who purchased a package of Girl Scout Cookies for our Operation Cookie/Hometown Heroes campaign. Without you, this would not be possible.”

In 2005, Girl Scouts of Nassau County began its partnership with DHL and started shipping packages of Girl Scout Cookies overseas. Operation Cookie is a testament to the support

community members have for our troops and the program teaches girls that a small action could have a major impact. Since its inception, GSNC and DHL have shipped over 1,000,000 packages to U.S. servicemen and women in places like Kuwait, Bahrain, Poland, Germany, Japan and various military bases across the U.S. and Europe. Deliveries are also made locally to military bases like the Coast Guard stations at Jones Beach, the U.S. Marines base in Garden City and the Midshipmen at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point.

The Hometown Heroes program has a similar impact and recognizes local essential workers and first responders such as doctors, firefighters, and police officers, which is why hospitals, police departments, and a blood bank are part of this year’s roster of Girl Scout Cookies® recipients.

“We are honored to be part of Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s Operation Cookie, which gives soldiers far away from their families a ‘taste of home’ as a thank you for their sacrifices,” said Pawel Zagaja, Senior Director of JFK Gateway, DHL Express. “At DHL, our purpose is to

connect people and improve lives, and it’s wonderful to recognize others who are doing just that through this yearly Girl Scouts program. It’s also very special to see the number of boxes donated grow each year, which speaks volumes to the Nassau County community.”

Members of the U.S. military and local first responders will soon be enjoying their favorite Girl Scout Cookies such as Thin Mints, Trefoils, and Tagalongs. To learn more about Operation Cookie and Hometown Heroes, visit www.gsnc.org.

Legislator Mulé Recognizes Merrick Mayhem Little League

Nassau County Legislator

Debra Mulé (D – Freeport) honored the coaches and members of the Merrick Mayhem 8 and Under Little League team for raising more than $4,000 for the ALS Association – a feat they accomplished by literally turning lemons into lemonade.

Guided by their community spirit and a

desire to give back to the community, the team sold lemonade and snacks during a recent Little League game and set a goal of raising $1,400. The philanthropic lemonade stand was a massive hit, and by the time they were done, they had tripled their goal.

“The tremendous success of this fundraiser is a beautiful demonstration of

how Little League and other youth sports programs can instill important values that can serve a person well throughout their entire lives,” Legislator Mulé said.

“I thank the coaches and the players of the Merrick Mayhem for working so hard on behalf of such a worthwhile cause.”

Wantagh Student Earns Prestigious Service Award

Madeline Rose, a rising senior at Wantagh High School, was recently named a recipient of the SHIELD Award from Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. The award recognizes students who demonstrate service, honesty, integrity, excellence, leadership and duty.

She was nominated by her guidance counselor, Marie Malafis. Through her junior year, Madeline already has an impressive record of volunteer service. She assists Town of Hempstead residents with mental and physical challenges through her work with the Camp ANCHOR summer program. Additionally, she tutors local middle school students and is a volunteer choreographer for the youth theater program at St. Frances de Chantal Church.

In school, Madeline is an officer with the general organization, president of the Wantagh Theater Club and a member of the orchestra. She is also recipient of the Jefferson Book Award from the University of Virginia.

Ms. Malafis described Madeline as always reliable and deeply invested in any work that she does.

“She wants to change things for the better,” Ms. Malafis said.

Twenty-Seven Nassau County Educators Are Honored At Nassau BOCES NASTECH NASTAR Awards Ceremony

Nassau BOCES and the Nassau Association of School Technologists (NASTECH) celebrated 27 dynamic educators who have advanced the use of technology in education, including three NASTECH retirees at a special ceremony recently. These pioneering individuals were honored at the fifth annual Nassau Association of School Technologists Award Recipient (NASTAR) awards, held at the Long Island Marriot.

The NASTAR awards were created by the Nassau BOCES NASTECH Service to honor educators for their innovation, leadership and support of technology initiatives in their school districts. Each recipient is selected by their district based on this criterion. This year, a total of 27 Nassau County educators were acknowledged for

their achievements in a ceremony conducted by Nassau BOCES NASTECH and Data Privacy and Security Service Supervisor Laura Pollak and Program Specialist Barbara Deal.

“Ms. Deal and I feel so fortunate to have the privilege of recognizing the educators who work tirelessly to promote technology programs in our Nassau County districts,” said Ms. Pollack. “The NASTAR awards event highlights how brightly these educators shine, and we look forward to honoring even more NASTARs next year.”

King Kullen Helps Fund Summer Camp Programs For Disadvantaged Long Island Children

King Kullen Grocery Co., Inc., has donated $10,000 to benefit summer camp programs for disadvantaged children in Nassau and Suffolk Counties, a tradition begun by King Kullen more than three decades ago. The donation will be divided evenly between Family & Children’s Association (Nassau County) and Family Service League (Suffolk County).

“Camp provides a stimulating and fun environment where children can learn new activities and meet other children their age,” observed King Kullen President and Chief Operating Officer Joseph W. Brown. “King Kullen’s gift will help fund scholarships for children whose families lack the resources for summer camp. Additionally, customers who want to make a difference can participate in our annual ‘Send A Kid to Camp’ campaign this summer

by scanning $5, $2, or $1 coupons at the register at all King Kullen and Wild by Nature stores.”

Family and Children’s Association President and CEO Jeffrey Reynolds stated, “The gifts we receive from individuals and corporations like King Kullen make it possible for us to provide these wonderful experiences for Long Island’s young people. We thank King Kullen for all their support over the years.”

Family Service League Division Director Robyn Berger-Gaston added, “We are very grateful to again receive this generous donation from King Kullen. These camps are often the highlight of the year for the children we help.”

Headquartered in Hauppauge, NY, King Kullen is recognized by the Smithsonian Institution as American’s first supermarket. Founded in 1930 by Michael J. Cullen,
