Summer Bridge Program
Nearly 100 children spent two weeks studying science as the Levittown School District hosted Camp Invention at Wisdom Lane Middle School. The program was open to students entering third through fifth grade and led by teachers from the district’s elementary and high schools. The young scientists participated in four workshops. In Duct Tape Billionaire, they designed products to design and sell, and also completed engineering challenges by building structures that could withstand the weight of rolls of duct tape. Students launched water rockets, made air cannons and flung rubber chickens in Have a Blast and designed their own planets and grew crystals in Mission Space Maker. Operation Keep Out featured a mix of demolition and creation.
In learning about circuits, students took apart old household electronics and used the pieces to make alarm boxes that would be activated by a light sensor. Each day, the youngsters also participated in Camp Invention Games featuring team-building activities. “The feedback was really great,” said Camp Invention Director Siobhan Schneider. “The children were engaged in creative and innovative activities. They had a ton of fun while learning, and this really fit in perfectly with our elementary science program.” It was the first time Levittown has hosted Camp Invention and Schneider said it was a tremendous success. Children enjoyed the hands-on activities and the opportunity to interact with their peers from other elementary schools. “I wanted to learn about science and do
experiments,” said Abbey Lane School fifth-grader Matthew Hartmann. “It was a lot of fun and I learned stuff I didn’t know before.” “Every day we did something different,” added Gardiners Avenue School fifth-grader Antonio Vargas. “Now, when I get into the higher grades and we’re going to be doing these projects, I’ll be better prepared.” Middle school and high school students from the district also served as volunteer counselors. They supported the teachers and helped bring the children to the different centers. “I loved the fact that the kids looked up to us,” said volunteer Meghan Yodice, an eighth-grader at Wisdom Lane who wants to be a teacher. “They were so excited to learn and I was happy to be a part of this.”

While some were more interested in grazing on nearby ivy, others, especially the babies, enjoyed interrupting the practice for playtime. “Goats are inherently gentle, social animals,” said Bridge Program Director and teacher, Mary Donnelly. “While yoga teaches us how to be calm and present ‘in the moment,’ the simple presence of the goats reminds us that we sometimes need to relinquish control, smile and embrace the chaos.” Once the yoga practice ended, students played with the goats and even took a few “selfies” before returning to class.

Kennedy High School teacher Dawn Sullivan featuring special guests from Long Island-based Steppin’ Out Ponies and Petting Zoo, a rescue organization run by Bellmore-Merrick alumna Karen Bayha. As students entered an enclosed area at Grand Avenue Middle School to set up sun salutations on their beach towels, they were joined by a dozen of Bayha’s rescue goats, some as young as just a few weeks old. “Goat Yoga,” which is growing in popularity across the nation, was recently featured in Sunday’s Newsday. Bayha’s rescue is involved with Goat Yoga events offered weekly by the Smithtown Historical Society. Bayha, who graduated from Mepham High School, was interested in partnering with the Bridge Program to “give

Incoming ninth-grade students in the inaugural Bellmore-Merrick Summer Bridge Program enjoyed Mindfulness Day, a day devoted to helping students build self-advocacy skills, cope with stress and tension, improve social relationships with peers and adults, and set goals for high school. The district’s newly adopted Bridge Program and promotion policy is designed to help students strengthen necessary academic and organizational skills before moving on to high school. “The focus is to help re-engage students while preparing them for what they will encounter academically as they start the ninth grade,” said Cheryl Fontana, district director of fine and performing arts and the Bridge Program coordinator. A highlight of the day featured a unique yoga

Keeping Active Merrick’s Birch School was buzzing this summer as students from every grade level (K-6) from throughout the Merrick School District have been engaged in constructive and educational activities through their participation in the district’s Summer Recreation program. Celebrating its 25th year servicing the children of the district, the Merrick Summer Recreation program provides students with various outlets to keep their hands and bodies moving and their minds sharp in a fun and relaxed, yet organized and productive environment. Courses this year included art, crafts, cooking,
deejay instruction, game time (computer, board, building and math-related games), jewelry making, kindergarten orientation, needlepoint, physical education and STEM learning. Along with these enriching opportunities, Birch School also houses the district’s remedial program to help students reinforce concepts and subject areas taught this past school year. “They say the happiest place on earth is Disneyland. gThey are wrong, it’s camp!” said Melissa Robinson, who along with Kelley Merkle, have been happily codirecting the program for the last 10 years.

In addition to the daily program, held Monday through Friday throughout the month of July, the Merrick Summer Recreation incoporated fun guests and special themes to further inspire teamwork and make the days more fun. One day the program welcomed a “Mad Scientist” while a few days later they held a “Group-uplet Day” in which students and staff dressed to a theme that was incoporated into their class activities; for example, cooking students dressed as superheroes and dubbed themselves “Super Chefs.” As a special reward for the students, the Merrick Summer Recreation program culminated with a carnival on the campus grounds. Happy anniversary to Merkle, Robinson and all of the staff members who have contributed to the many meaningful and wonderful summer experiences enjoyed by the children of Merrick during the last 25 years!

Chapter 35 Today, I turn 35, making that dreaded leap into the next age bracket. So long 1834. It’s been fun. Though age is but a number, it does tend to carry added significance the higher those digits climb. Each year brings with it a sort of reevaluation of life. Where am I at? Where do I want to be? And, most importantly, how to traverse that at-times tricky road between points A & B. Uneven as it might seem, I do believe we all have a path we are destined to travel. How we choose to navigate it remains somewhat open-ended. I’ve always felt my generation existed on the cusp of two worlds. A child of the 90’s, my teen years were spent listening to the sounds of *NSync and Britney Spears and watching T.G.I.F. on ABC
Friday nights. The entire grunge movement passed me by, as did many of the cult classic movies of the time. Twenty years later, I have found a new appreciation for all that came before. Pop culture aside, I feel my particular age group remains the last of the “old school.” We were brought up in an age where technology was limited to televisions and radios, Walkmen and cassette tapes. No one had a cell phone until I was well into college, perhaps a beeper if they were lucky. If you wanted to reach a friend, you called their home and most likely were greeted by their parents, who knew you by name. A night out consisted of being dropped off at the local mall or movie theater, then picked up by those same parents and taken

to a local diner. To say things have changed would be an understatement. Of course, this is the case with each generation, as its members grow and flourish and begin to explore the world on their own. We pick up on elements of those who came before and modify them to fit our constantly evolving view of our surroundings as they, too, evolve on a near daily basis. The hope, in the end, is that we will never completely let go of those things which shaped us during our most formative years, the core values we were raised with. No matter how life may change, no matter how many age brackets we pass through, we must remain true to ourselves. Here’s to 35. Here’s to the next chapter, a fresh page in the old book.

Assemblyman Dave McDonough is pleased to announce the success of his food drive this past weekend which collected over 1,555 pounds of food. The drive was held at the King Kullen in Bellmore on August 5th and was sponsored by Long Island Cares. “No one should have to worry about where their family’s next meal will come from,” said McDonough. “It is important that we pay it forward and help out those who are less fortunate. Not only is this helping out families in need on Long
Island, but this is also a great opportunity to teach younger generations what is means to help out your neighbor. I look forward to working with Long Island Cares again in the future to raise even more food to help out even more families.” “During a time when food drive donations are historically low, The Summer Food Drive to End Hunger serves as a significant tool in meeting our vision of a hunger-free Long Island. Santino, Senior Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilman Anthony D’Esposito and Councilman Dennis Dunne, Sr. have announced that the initiative has yielded more than $210,000 in revenue. The Town of Hempstead was the first local municipality to create such a program, which kicked off on May 31st, 2017, and which immediately garnered $135,000. The program will continue to generate money for Town of Hempstead taxpayers as additional equipment and supplies are being
considered for auction. The auction revenues could supplant an equal amount of property tax revenues that might otherwise be required to meet expenses. Partnering with Auctions International, the town is inventorying items that are no longer useable in serving town residents. The auction company posts the surplus/obsolete inventory on the web, conducting Internet auctions. “We’re literally turning trash into cash,” Santino said. “While other municipalities are discarding similarly old and obsolete equipment, our town is making money by auctioning the items online and turning them into taxpayer savings.” “From day one, Supervisor Santino
has been committed to discovering innovative ways to save taxpayers money,” stated Goosby. “This ‘Trash into Cash’ program will certainly go a long way toward helping the hard-working residents of America’s largest township.” Some of the auctioned equipment includes dump trucks, pickup trucks, communications equipment, cameras, vans, payloaders and road sanding vehicles, among other items. Currently, the town is even looking to auction boats that have been donated to the town, some of which were damaged in Superstorm Sandy. And, the town may have struck “pay dirt” as it is currently listing 11,000 cubic yards of “clean fill” dirt that the town has
accumulated through various projects. Under the contract with Auctions International, the town receives 100 percent of the sales price of auctioned items while Auctions International charges a “buyer’s premium.” The company has extensive experience in Internet auctions that market the types of equipment and surplus material that Hempstead Town is seeking to sell. The town commenced its partnership with the auction company in March of 2017. Sales prices range from $130 for some used cameras and printers to over $9,000 for an international payloader. Added Councilman Dunne, “This program spearheaded by Supervisor Santino is proof that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and town taxpayers will continue to benefit.” Santino explained that
the revenue gained from the auction of obsolete town equipment can actually result in relief for town taxpayers. In specific, the Supervisor noted that revenues gained from the program will help to meet the town’s budgeted expenses. He emphasized that he greatly favors the use of revenues such as auction proceeds to meet expenses as opposed to drawing upon sources that impact town taxpayers. “Programs like this are a ‘win-win’ for our taxpayers,” concluded Santino. “From auctioning equipment from photography equipment to bulldozers, the Town of Hempstead is raising revenue and reducing the burden placed on local taxpayers.”

Federation of Organizations honored volunteers from its Foster Grandparent and Senior Companion programs this past June at Stonebridge Country Club in Smithtown, New York. More than 250 guests attended The Senior Volunteer Recognition Luncheon, held annually to recognize dedicated seniors making a difference in the lives of children with special needs as well as homebound seniors. During the event, emceed by News 12’s Doug Geed, Federation’s Chief Executive Officer, Barbara Faron, presented Chief Operating Officer Philip Matcovsky as the organization’s “Man of the Year,” for 30 years of outstanding service. Matcovsky joined Federation in 1987 as a counselor in the homeless outreach program before moving up the ranks to become a supervisor, director and Chief Operating Officer. As COO, Matcovsky has been instrumental in helping Federation and its 500 employees navigate major changes to managed care,
while managing day-to-day operations of an agency with a $48 million budget. He continues to strive for the best possible care for Long Island seniors, as well as individuals who are homeless or living with mental health challenges. Federation’s Senior Director of Outreach Services, Tracy Falkner, LMSW, awarded Volunteer of the Year Awards to Foster Grandparent Jeanette Ingenito and Senior Companion Lucy Caracciola for their exemplary care and service. The agency’s 140 Foster Grandparents currently mentor more than 2,500 children in Suffolk County, while Federation’s Senior Companion Program provides support and assistance to frail homebound seniors. Senator Phil Boyle (NYS 4th Senate District) and Ed Romaine, Town of Brookhaven Supervisor, served as Guest Speakers at the event, commending Federation’s volunteers for their efforts to enhance the quality of life of Long Island children and seniors. Sideshow School Coney Island USA and Professa Adam Rinn Present: Sideshow School. Coney Island USA’s Sideshow School is the only school of its kind where students can learn the ancient and sometimes deadly secrets of the sideshow. A new crop of thrill seekers will be attending the next session, scheduled for August 22nd-24th at Sideshows by the Seashore. Now in its 17th year, Sideshow School has taught dozens of potential circus, sideshow and carnival workers how to walk on glass, eat and breathe fire, swallow swords, and hammer nails into their faces, along with a handful of other of the sideshow’s ‘working acts.’ Students take the class at their own risk and must sign a hold harmless agreement absolving the school and its instructors
from any possible injuries the students might incur. “In all the years that I’ve taught sideshow school,” Dean and Professa, Adam Rinn declares, “nobody has ever gotten hurt.” Rinn himself was a graduate of the Sideshow School and went on to become a prolific performer who has entertained audiences throughout North America. Sessions are capped at 10 students so that each student can learn in a safe and controlled atmosphere. “Safety is key when learning these feats,” says Rinn,“we don’t force anything upon the students, they attend the school because they want to learn these unique acts. It’s important to be patient and work with the students at their level.” Those attending the three day, hands on seminar have ranged from doctors,
authors and teachers who have a general interest in sideshow and circus arts to magicians, jugglers and bartenders who have used some of the skills they have learned in their own line of work to sideshow performers looking to expand their repertoire. But it is not all about the ‘working acts.’ The three day session also offers a history of the legendary amusement district and its role in olde time and contemporary freak shows. “It’s very rewarding when the students conquer their fears and hit the ground running,” The Professa states. “After each session, I get a slew of emails thanking me and telling me what a life changing experience sideshow school was. Thousands of Long Islanders are expected to join the American Heart Association’s Long Island Heart Walk on Sunday, September 17th to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke, America’s No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death. The annual event begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach, Field 5 in Wantagh.
