These hard-working individuals were congratulated by administrators, faculty and staff during a special ceremony at the ALC in St. Bernard’s School in Levittown. Many of these adult

students are now ready to enter the workforce after improving their English language skills and earning their New York State High School Equivalency diplomas by completing the Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) exam. The money raised at “Cocktails in the Cloister” will support all the work of Homecoming Farm, including its educational programming and its commitment to providing beautiful, certified organic, locally grown, fresh food to The Interfaith Nutrition Network (The INN). A Long Island resident and champion, with many successful restaurants in both Nassau and Suffolk counties including Jewel, Alure, and Kingfish Oyster Bar, Schaudel offers his support to many nonprofits across Long Island. “I’m happy to participate at an event celebrating an organization that keeps it home-grown on Long Island,” says Schaudel. Hempstead Town Councilman Anthony D’Esposito recently met with Mark and John Cronin, co-founders of John’s Crazy Socks to discuss the creation of the Camp ANCHOR 50th Anniversary Sock which was designed by a camp participant during a contest run by the Councilman. As D’Esposito met with the Cronins about the development of the sock, Mark informed the Councilman that they would be donating up to 700 pairs of socks to the camp so that all the profits from the sale would go straight to the ANCHOR Program Fund. All camp participants worked on designing a 50thanniversary sock and one sock was selected to actually be manufactured. There was a manufacturing fee of approximately $8 a pair and the socks were to be sold at $12 a pair, giving the ANCHOR Program Fund approximately a $4 profit on each pair of socks sold. By donating the manufacturing costs, the Cronins are now allowing the ANCHOR Program Fund to receive the entire $12 per sock purchase. “I was so glad to have worked with John’s Crazy Socks to develop this program that would result in the ANCHOR Program Fund raising much needed funds,” said D’Esposito. “By making this donation, the Cronins have made this a major fundraiser for the Program Fund and I could not be more grateful because I have a special place in my heart for Camp ANCHOR and know the funds will be put to great use!” John’s Crazy Socks is operated by John, a young man with Down Syndrome and his father Mark. The company is built on the mission of showing what is possible when you give someone a chance and demonstrate what people with intellectual disabilities can do.

ANCHOR is the Town’s comprehensive yearround program serving 1,200 children and adults with special needs. Camp ANCHOR, the town’s six-week summer day camp program, serves approximately 700 children and adults with special needs throughout the summer. Camp participants who are ages five years and up enjoy an array of athletic, aquatic and cultural programs, as well as field trips and special events. “Giving back is an essential part of what we do. Every day, we work to show what people with differing abilities can do so we love the way that Camp Anchor brings so much joy to their campers,” said Mark X. Cronin. “We were grateful to have the opportunity to contribute to the good work of Camp ANCHOR by donating these socks.” Camp ANCHOR

participants created their sock designs during their arts and crafts class and then John chose a winning design. ANCHOR Program Fund, Inc., is a charitable, not-for-profit organization that accepts donations to fund special activities and events, as well as the necessary supplies and equipment, for individuals with disabilities participating in programs like ANCHOR. “I loved going to camp when I was younger so I know how important Camp ANCHOR is and how much fun,” said John Cronin. “The ANCHOR Program Fund allows campers to take part in a wide variety of enrichment activities and now they will be able to do so much more as a result of this generous donation from John’s Crazy Socks,” concluded D’Esposito. “I encourage everyone to go to JohnsCrazySocks. com and order their Camp ANCHOR Sock today!”

Beginnings Birthdays are beginnings. This is a sentiment I have always held particularly close to my heart, if for no other reason than it allows for the momentary illusion of a fresh start, at least for one day. What evolves beyond that point in time is anyone’s guess of course; but the symbolic turning of the page is one that resonates quite deeply for me. This year’s birthday falls within an interval of time that is especially significant, the start of a completely new chapter in my life. After 13 years as editor of South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers and Seasons Magazine, I will be leaving my position to pursue a new adventure at the close of the month, taking my love of writing to the next level and exploring the vast opportunities that await just around the bend. Change is never easy, least of all for someone with my affinity for routine and structure; but, as with all things, sometimes fate takes a hand and points you in a direction you never thought possible. Time, as we know, is one of life’s most precious commodities. As much as we would like to believe there will always be another chance to embark on a particular journey

or pursue a particular dream, the simple fact is that we can never be certain. The time is now, always. I have countless fond memories of my years working here at the old “South Bay” paper that I grew up reading, which I will touch on in more detail as the weeks progress. For now, though, suffice it to say that I am extremely grateful for the chance I was given to show my worth as a fresh-faced college graduate all those years ago. What began as a first step to “get a foot in the door” turned into a huge portion of my career, during which I was able to grow and flourish. My nearly 700 In Step columns stand as the biggest testament to the incredible support I have received from my co-workers, family and friends - and, perhaps most importantly, from those readers who have turned into loyal followers and fans. You have all come along for this journey, week after week, and for that I am forever thankful. Milestones have come and gone, as the columns have accumulated and the memories have been stored away for safekeeping between the lines of type. Along the way, the

particular numbers have gotten miscalculated and misplaced; but now, as I approach the final stretch, I felt an official “count” was in order. To my surprise - and delight, given how I began this particular selection, I will finish my tenure here with precisely 681 columns - my birthdate {8/16} “boxed,” if you will, for those familiar with gambling terminology. A fitting end, if you ask me. And with that, one more column in the books, three remaining - I would like to ask you, readers, for your feedback on what have been some of your favorites through the years, the topics and tales that stood above the rest. Your input has always been appreciated, and has been noted in many of my narratives over time. The stories may have been my own, but the writing was always for you. I look forward to reading your thoughts, and to taking you on my journey as I continue to contribute columns from time to time to my own personal website, SnapshotsAndSilhouettes.com. ’Til next time, may tomorrow’s birthday be just the beginning of a beautiful new chapter.

Veterans Receive Vehicles Two wartime veterans were recognized for their military service and gifted with vehicles donated by GEICO Insurance Company and enhanced by The Collision Centers of New York. The two veterans were honored at the Long Island Ducks Baseball Stadium during the 6:35 p.m. game on August 4th 2018 during the annual Military Appreciation Night. Local Suffolk County residents, US Navy Veteran Christopher Russel, and US Marine Veteran, Mark Davis were struggling

to do their daily tasks without a vehicle. Getting to work, going to doctor’s appointments, seeing family and having the freedom they deserve was difficult without a working vehicle. Mr. Davis and Mr. Russel were each given a vehicle at the Long Island Ducks Game during the 6th inning where fans and spectators rose and gave the two veterans a standing ovation during the presentation of the keys. Mr. Davis who was nominated by the Veterans of Foreign War received a 2014 Toyota

Corolla and said after the ceremony, “I just can’t stop smiling, thank you so much.” The Economic Opportunity Council -Suffolk, nominated Mr. Russel in hopes the vehicle would help him cut down on his two-hour commute to work on his bike. He was gifted a 2009 Honda CRV. The cars were donated through the National Auto Body Council’s (NABC) Recycle Rides Program, which ensures deserving citizens without safe and operational vehicles have

However, as a guide, here’s how I have been doing this for the past several years, and it works just fine: Each day (usually late in the afternoon or early evening), I review my calendar (which I call my planner) and note which items (emphasis on the As and Bs) that have already been completed and which ones need to be carried over to the next day. This only takes a few minutes, and it is essential to be done. When completed, you now have a list of tasks to be done for the next day. The only task remaining is to classify them by their numeric number (As, Bs, etc) and place them into the next

day’s slot. Special Note: Every time I teach one of the seminars, the following questions always arise: “My boss calls me and tells me that he wants to see right away and I do not have this as an “A” priority - what do I do? The answer is simple: DROP EVERY AND SEE YOUR BOSS IMMEDIATELY! However, when you get back to your desk, put this as a completed “A” priority and include any follow-ups required. When all that is done, go right back to your “to-do” list and start completing the next item on your list. SUMMARY As you have already seen, the key to this system’s success is the sequence that it follows. We start the night before reviewing what has been completed, then make the necessary adjustments for the next day. Starting each day, we start on the important “A” priorities, being mindful that all “A”s must be completed before going on to the “B”s. We also remain very flexible with the schedule, allowing time for lunch and work breaks, and of course adjustments for unexpected events. Ideas to Build School Spirit and Community

chools are often at the heart of a community. Schools are centralized places where people gather and friendships are formed. Creating an environment where school spirit is strong can be crucial to building a thriving community. School spirit can make people smile and bring them together for a common goal. Creating a balanced environment in schools also can help students feel more comfortable and happier about attending class each day.

The National Federation of State High School Associations reports that, along with showing support for their school, high school students with school spirit perform better academically, are more engaged in social and civic matters and are generally happier than other peers. Those findings were part of a survey conducted by Harris Poll and involved 1,500 students who were asked about key factors like pride, academics and self-esteem at school.

eing the new kid in school can be a tall order for youngsters. Children who change schools may face a host of challenges that studies suggest can affect both their social and academic development.

In a 2010 study that followed students who entered kindergarten in 1998 through 2007, the Government Accountability Office found that 13 percent of students changed schools four or more times by the end of eighth grade. Such mobility can adversely affect students, as a study of 13,000 students in the city of Chicago found that children who had changed schools four or more times by the sixth grade were roughly a year behind their classmates. In addition to the toll transferring schools can take on their academic performance, students also may experience difficulty assimilating into their new schools. Though there’s no formula to make such transitions easier, parents can try various strategies to help their kids successfully adjust to new schools.

Speak with children about the transition. Pathways.org, a not-forprofit organization devoted to providing free child development information to parents and health professionals, recommends parents speak with their children about transitioning to a new school. Encourage children to share what excites and worries them about the transition. The way parents discuss transitions can go a long way toward shaping how kids view the change. Stay true to your routine. Pathways also recommends parents of students who are transitioning to a new school do their best to replicate first day of school routines from years past. Some familiar traditions might help calm kids’ concerns about their first day in a new school. Assimilate into a new community before the school year begins. The education resource Edweek.org notes that the most common causes of students changing schools are residential moves related to parents’ jobs or financial instability. Parents on the lookout for a new job or those

who may need to relocate for financial reasons may want to delay moving until the current school year has ended. Moving between school years gives families time to acclimate to their new communities. That means kids will get time to make new friends. Some familiar faces on the first day at a new school can go a long way toward alleviating the fears children may have. Volunteer at your child’s new school. Parental involvement at school can have a profound impact on children. The National Education Association notes that children whose parents are involved at school are more likely to perform academically than students whose parents are uninvolved. In addition, such students are more likely to have good attendance and exhibit stronger social skills than children whose parents do not involve themselves in their children’s school. It stands to reason that

students transferring to a new school may benefit from parental involvement even more than other students, as seeing their parents approach a new school with excitement and energy may inspire children to follow suit. 3 Techniques to Help Kids Concentrate

lassrooms are now vastly different from the ones today’s parents were accustomed to when they were children. Technology has changed the face of classrooms, and while digital classrooms have revolutionized the ways kids learn, they also can make it more difficult for students to concentrate.

Computers, tablets and smartphones can be invaluable resources for teachers and students. But when such devices compromise student’s ability to concentrate, parents may need to embrace various techniques aimed at improving kids’ ability to concentrate.

1. Discourage personal devices in the classroom. Computers and tablets can expand learning opportunities in the classroom, but parents who want their kids to focus on lessons can discourage the use of personal devices, such as smartphones or personal tablets, in the classroom. As noted by the Child Mind® Institute, apps and web content are designed to be user-friendly and addictive. In addition, modern youngsters socialize through their smartphones. Alerts or messages from social media apps or friends can distract kids from their lessons, which may adversely affect their academic performance. Unless teachers ask students to bring their personal devices to class, parents can

discourage, if not restrict, their children to bring their smartphones or tablets with them to class. 2. Limit multitasking.

A 2009 study from researchers at Stanford University found that heavy media multitaskers were more susceptible to interference from irrelevant environmental stimuli and from irrelevant representations in memory than light media multitaskers. Students who try to do too much at once may think they’re getting a lot done, but dividing their attention among several subjects may make it harder for them to fully understand or learn their class lessons. When studying, students who concentrate on one subject or task may understand materials more fluently than those who divide their attention among subjects or those who focus on studying while also performing other tasks. 3. Encourage strategic breaks.

The Academic Success Center at Oregon State University notes that taking breaks can improve concentration and make studying more efficient and effective. When taking study breaks, students should set time limits on their breaks and change their scenery. Walking away from a book, device or computer screen for 10 minutes can help students avoid fatigue that can develop when they study for too long without a break. That fatigue can affect

students’ ability to absorb the lessons they’re trying to learn, so parents can encourage students to take strategic breaks. Once per hour might be enough, but some students may benefit from more frequent breaks.

The competition for kids attention in the classroom is greater than ever before. As a result, parents may need to encourage their children to embrace various strategies that can improve their concentration.

Tutoring Benefits and How to Find a Tutor that Fits

hildren tend to learn at their own pace, and certain subjects may challenge them more than others. In many instances, students can benefit from working with tutors. Tutors can be very effective. Children who work with tutors and then see their grades improve may develop greater confidence and feel less anxious about going to school or taking tests.

Without intervention like tutoring, at-risk students (those who are not meeting academic standards) may not pass their classes, and some may face year-end retention or experience difficulty keeping up in the next grade. The National Tutoring Association says students at all grade levels participating in tutorial programs improve their reading performance and can achieve significant cognitive gains. Tutoring can be the answer for students affected by inconsistent delivery of classroom content. For example, when families move, students may be forced to catch up in a new school where teachers may

have different styles than students’ previous teachers. Students who have missed classroom time due to illness or injury may face similar difficulties. Sometimes children struggle because they have difficulty processing or remembering their lessons. In such instances, a fresh approach through one-on-one tutoring may be necessary.

Parents and students have different tutoring options at their disposal. Some services may be offered through the school system at no extra charge. Pull-out instruction during the day or before or after school might be part of such services. Private tutors, academic coaches, peer tutors, online tutoring and home tutoring are other options. Depending on need, budget and comfort levels, families can explore these and other options at their disposal. The NTA says families should not discount peer tutoring. Peer tutoring

is a cost-effective way to improve performance. This type of tutoring also can contribute to students’ social and cognitive development. According to Care. com, which helps consumers find tutors, caretakers and babysitters, one can expect to pay an average $10 to $15 for a peer high school student tutor. Comparatively, a private tutor, whether it’s a professional teacher or a tutor hired through a service, may charge as much as $75 per hour. Parents should contact their children’s schools for information about tutoring programs. Schools typically keep lists of tutors or tutoring programs.

Examine credentials and seek recommendations prior to hiring a tutor to get a feel for the person and his or her teaching philosophy. Certified

Keep in mind that it isn’t enough for the tutor to know the subject matter. He or she also has to relate to your child. According to the tutoring firm Test Prep Authority, motivation plays a key role in the success or failure of a students’ work with tutors. Calm the Chaos on Busy School Mornings Mornings can test the patience and stamina of busy families as adults and children hurry to get out the door on time. Starting off the morning already stressed can lead to feeling tense throughout the rest of the day. There is no magic formula to make mornings less hectic, but the following are some ways families can streamline their morning routines: Make use of the night before. Morning madness may come about due to lack of preparation the previous night. The more that can be done the night before, the less there will be to do on weekday mornings. Encourage children to lay out clothes for the next day and take a shower or bath that evening. Make lunches the night before a school day, and gather all supplies from homework stations, restocking backpacks and gym bags so everything is ready to go come the morning.

It’s never too early to help children become better communicators. From toddlerhood to grade school and beyond, learning how to interact with others are necessary at every stage. Developing communication takes time, but there are various techniques to help kids become better communicators.

Great communication is a twoway process. Listening is often as important as speaking when communicating. Parents can help model good behavior by listening and letting children express themselves before offering their own opinions.

Take turns in conversation. Rather than speaking at the same time or interrupting others, effective communicators take turns offering their thoughts. Listening to others can help shape what the other person might say. Speak regularly with one another. Initiate conversation frequently so that children become accustomed to speaking with adults and others. Chat about where you’re going when running errands or discuss television plots during commercial breaks.

Make conversations relevant. Allow experiences that are happening around the family to shape conversations. Encourage curiosity and introduce new themes and vocabulary. The more the child gets to experience, the more inclined he or she may be to discuss those experiences.

it turns out, following the Las Vegas mass shootings that left 58 dead and 851 injured, NYU Winthrop nurses felt strongly that the emergency department staff caring for the victims deserved to be cared for as well. The NYU Winthrop staff walked a mile in their shoes, figuratively, by imagining how difficult it was for the Las Vegas hospital staffs to cope. NYU Winthrop professionals wanted them to know they were not alone and, as nurses, they were part of a special family of professionals, regardless of geography. The NYU Winthrop staff coordinated a collection to purchase lunches for the entire staff at two Las Vegas hospital emergency departments. Those colleagues, overwhelmed by the support and compassion shown, sent in return letters of appreciation and a banner of thanks with signatures from the staff. And now here was Tommy Maher wanting to buy pizza lunches for the NYU Winthrop Emergency Department.

Upon hearing how those staff members had rallied in support of the Las Vegas hospitals, Tommy Maher was overcome with emotion, saying “Paying it forward really does work.” The next day, Maher delivered 20 pizzas to the NYU Winthrop Emergency Department staff to honor Sonny Melton. His name will now be remembered with great kindness by a group of emergency department nurses who are very grateful that there are people in the world like the selfless Sonny Melton. Maher has been all over the country, even making his way to Alaska, to do these random acts of kindness, with many others jumping on the bandwagon to help. “I lost a good friend in 9/11, and when the Las Vegas shootings happened, this idea popped into my head of a way to remember the innocent victims. New York Mets star Michael Conforto, a 25-year-old outfielder who was an All-Star last season, recently said that he wanted to lead by example. “If I am going to be a guy who is going to be sticking around,” said Conforto, “I’ve got to step into a little bit more of a leadership role.” While Conforto was talking about his role on the field, he’s been displaying plenty of leadership off the field. Today, “Scooter,” as he’s also known, visited dozens of youngsters at The Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at NYU Winthrop Hospital as well as its Children’s Medical Center. The visit was part of Conforto Cares, a program established by the player to raise awareness about pediatric cancer and the challenges faced by young patients. As part of the program, Conforto had already hosted young NYU Winthrop patients and their families at Citi Field, but Conforto wanted to do more; he wanted to come and see where the youngsters are being treated and spread sunshine and hope in these important places. “My goal is to bring cheer and inspiration to these young children while also raising the visibility of pediatric cancer and other childhood diseases,” said Conforto. “The Mets have

been extremely supportive of my efforts, caring deeply about their communities and helping me to give back. I hope to inspire these young patients to stay determined. If we, as a broader community, stay determined, maybe one day there will be more cures for childhood diseases.” Conforto distributed Mets t-shirts to the pediatric patients and family members. He also handed out pop-up replicas of the Mets home-run apple and presented autographed photos. The event followed on the heels of patients and family members visiting Citi Field last month at Michael Conforto’s invitation. During that outing, the youngsters were given a tour of the stadium and Mets clubhouse, and they were shown scoreboard operations including how to raise the homerun apple in centerfield. The children also enjoyed batting practice in the Mets batting cages and joined Conforto for lunch in the ballpark. Michael Conforto was so inspired by the spirit of these young patients during their visit that it prompted him to expand his program and initiate visits into the communities, such as the one held today. “Michael’s desire to create special experiences

for these children and their families really makes a difference,” said Mark Weinblatt, MD, Chief of Pediatric Hematology/ Oncology at NYU Winthrop and Director of the CCFK. “Children look up to professional athletes and meeting one like Michael Conforto and getting special memorabilia, it renews the vitality of these young patients and that’s so important.” Added Conforto, “It’s a privilege to help these children forget about the rigors of their treatments and just enjoy being kids.” The Cancer Center for Kids at NYU Winthrop Hospital offers a range of early detection, diagnostic, intervention and treatment services, both inpatient and outpatient, for children’s cancers and blood disorders. Dramatic improvements have been made in pediatric cancer patient survival, with nearly 80 percent of children cured of their malignancies. Each CCFK patient receives the latest treatment regimens, and most participate in national protocols that serve to further the science and treatment of childhood malignancies. Conditions treated at the Center include leukemia and lymphomas; bone, soft tissue and brain tumors; hemophilia; sickle cell disease and more. NYU Winthrop Hospital Children’s Medical Center offers broadscoped inpatient specialty programs and services. The Medical Center also features a Child Life Program aimed at easing the fears and anxiety of children who are hospitalized, addressing their emotional needs through play, fun-filled activities, education and support. There was a dose of serendipity at NYU Winthrop Hospital this week regarding “paying it forward.” A man came by the hospital, asking if he could do a random act of kindness for the Emergency Department. It turns out the man, a South Hempstead resident and Fire Commissioner named Tommy Maher, founded an organization called “Honor 58” that does random acts of kindness in honor of the 58 men and women killed in the Las Vegas concert shootings last year. One special man among those victims was Sonny Melton, a 29-year-old who served as a nurse in the emergency department of a Tennessee medical center. Sonny was killed in Las Vegas while shielding his wife Heather, who is an orthopedic surgeon, from gunfire. Sonny’s brave act saved Heather’s life. Sonny Melton’s birthday is next week, and Maher wanted him to be remembered. Maher was in for a surprise, however, when he spoke to staff within NYU Winthrop’s Emergency Department. As

This generous Petco Foundation grant will help Last Hope with transport and veterinary costs of dogs. With the help of shelters like Last Hope on Long Island, partner shelters like Daviess County in Kentucky have dramatically been able to improve adoptions and decrease the number of animals euthanized. Daviess takes in about 3,700 animals a year from three counties. In ten years, Daviess County has lowered their euthanasia rate for shelter dogs from 90 percent to less than 10 percent. “We first started taking Daviess County dogs in 2009,” said Linda Stuurman, president of Last Hope Animal Rescue, “By 2014, we were partnering with three Kentucky shelters and one Virginia shelter on a regular basis. In 2016, we rescued 221 transport

dogs, and the following year 208 dogs. Our Petco Foundation grant will enable Last Hope to save more transport dogs, and also restore their health before finding them loving homes. Many dogs saved by Last Hope need treatment for injuries, heartworm and/ or tick-borne diseases. Howi a white Lab mix, whom veterinarians thought may have been attacked by a bear, was also heartworm positive. Now with treatment from Last Hope, Howi found a family, and loves to go boating.
