TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below: Rebuilding Together L o n g Island is a non-profit 5 0 1 ( c ) ( 3 ) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with disabilities and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economically-disadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons).
Together Long Island has become a well-regarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are a few main ways you can get involved with their organization:
1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Hopping on the popular pop-up drive-in movie trend, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran announced that the County is rolling out a drive-in movie night series with FREE showings of family favorites under the stars on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout August. Food trucks will be onsite, and movie goers can get their fix of summertime snacks and movie theater staples. “Nostalgic drive-ins, more than half a century after their heyday, are having a revival across the country and Nassau County is happy to embrace the trend with this series of free movie nights under the stars,” said County Executive Laura Curran. Showings will take place at Eisenhower Park’s new drive-in theater located at parking lot 6A - with space for up to 120 cars. Entry to the parking lot will begin at 7:00pm with the night’s movie showing beginning at dusk (approximately 8:30pm). Levittown Appoints New Assistant Director Of Special Education
The Levittown Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Milton Josephs as assistant director of special education. Josephs previously served as the assistant principal at Abbey Lane and East Broadway elementary schools since 2018. Prior to joining the Levittown Public Schools, he was an assistant principal in the New York City Department of Education for two years. Originally from the United Kingdom, he now lives in Port Washington. Josephs received his undergraduate degree in business studies and

education from Queens College. In addition, he holds an administration certificate from Stony Brook University. “I started my educational career as a Special Education Teacher in the NYCDOE,” said Josephs. “Having spent some 16 years as both a teacher and assistant principal, I am really excited to begin this new chapter in my career – going back to my special education roots. I am particularly keen to do what I can to support some of our most vulnerable students and their families to help ensure ‘Success for Every Student.’”

Long Island High School For The Arts Graduates Awarded Scholarships As the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) Class of 2020 bid farewell to their alma mater, 15 students walked away with scholarships to help them along their respective paths. These students were honored for a variety of achievements in their chosen disciplines. Kassidy Rieder of Lindenhurst, who will be attending Manhattan School of Music, earned the $2,500 Ramona’s Gift to Music Scholarship, as well as a $1,000 LIHSA Scholarship. Katelyn Harold of Bethpage, who will be attending Marymount Manhattan College, earned the $250 Town of Oyster Bay Arts Council Scholarship, as well as a PTSA Award of Merit. In addition to Kassidy, four graduates earned a
$1,000 LIHSA Scholarship: Shannon Carlson of Harborfields, who will be attending Savannah College of Art and Design; Chase Leibowitz of Half Hollow Hills, who will be attending Berklee College of Music; Taylor Wagner of Massapequa, who will be attending Joffrey Ballet School; and Jasmine Wren of Amityville, who will be attending SUNY Buffalo. Nine students were awarded scholarships from the Parent Teacher Student Association (PTSA). Five of them earned a PTSA Award of Merit, while four received a PTSA LOTUS Scholarship. The PTSA Award of Merit winners are: Emily Huber of East Meadow, who will be attending Westminster Choir College at Rider University; Marie Pugliano from the BellmoreMerrick CHSD, who will
be attending Marymount Manhattan College; and Plainview-Old Bethpage CSD students Sierra Miles, who will be attending Emerson College, Trinity Pascarella, who will be attending Molloy College, and Ryan Young, who was accepted to Drexel University. 11th Annual Over 50 Fair Will Be A Virtual Charity Conference The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s event can be enjoyed
by computer or phone on September 12 and 13 from 12-4 each day. 10 local speakers, some of whom are experts in their field, will be sharing information about a variety of topics of interest to Baby Boomers and seniors, including long term care insurance, a comedy show, Microsoft training, reverse mortgages, and cleaning without chemicals.
The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each year. She said that the Over 50 Fair is always “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+,” although this year is a bit scaled down due to being virtual. The exciting weekendlong 2020 Over 50 Fair
will be a fundraiser for The INN, a local non-profit that helps provide assistance to the hungry, needy, and homeless right here on Long Island. The Importance Of Free Play The National Education Association notes that recess and free play are critical to the development of students in grades pre-K through eighth grade. According to the NEA, recess and free play during the school day encourages interpersonal interactions and problem-solving skills, and such opportunities also can prove beneficial for older students. Despite these benefits, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that 40 percent of schools have reduced
or eliminated recess over the last 20 years in an attempt to increase instructional time for students. While that may be understandable, it ignores the many benefits of recess and free play, which the American Academy of Pediatrics says are crucial to students’ mental, emotional, physical, and social development. In addition, the AAP notes that research has shown a connection between recess/free play and improved performance in the classroom. This is true even for older
students, including high schoolers. Regular breaks from the rigors of the classroom provide adolescent students with opportunities to mentally decompress, potentially improving their focus when classroom sessions resume. Such benefits highlight the important role of free play in the development of students, including older students whose school schedules may no longer include time for free play or recess.
