Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker and Licensed Cosmetologist, whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes to You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon serves an abundance of people across Long Island.
As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space and she incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. If you wish to get involved with Scanlon’s Traveling Salon, you can! Eileen is in need of a hair stylist who specializes in ethnic hair to volunteer with her organization (scheduling is flexible). She is also looking for businesses or non-profits to become sponsors to help her fulfill her mission. Become a Scanlon Sponsor today by purchasing one of the following three packages: Bronze Sponsor: $150/month allows your company to be promoted via weekly social media mentions and gets a link on Scanlon’s website and Facebook page to YOUR company’s
website; Silver Sponsor: $199/month allows your company to receive all the benefits of a Bronze Sponsorship, plus your business cards and flyers will be distributed to all clients’ homes; Gold Sponsor: $250/month allows your company to receive all the benefits of the Silver Sponsorship, plus your logo will be placed on her traveling salon vehicles. Lastly, if your non-profit is interested in bringing Scanlon’s Traveling Salon’s services on board to help your clients in need, the opportunity is available. Please contact Eileen today at 516.477.0469 for more information about volunteerism, sponsorship opportunities and her services. Also, visit her website at www.ScanlonsTravelingSalon.com as well as her Facebook page to learn more about her organization.
Keep an eye out for one of her traveling salon vehicles on the road!

In Swim Hi there readers! This is Norton von Spudley, flitting in for my mommy, Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, famed columnist and editor extraordinaire {she made me write that}. You may recall my name being mentioned from time to time in a handful of articles, but I’ve never been given the opportunity to put fin to keyboard and “step in” for In Step - until today. From what I hear, my predecessor, the beloved Buddy the Betta, was quite the regular contributor, even having his name grace the staff box as a guest columnist for a period of time. While I’m certainly no Buddy, I’d like to think I have my own unique charm to bring to the paper. Still a baby by betta fish standards, I’ve resided with my human for nearly two years already, and still going strong! Our story began back in November of 2016, following the passing of Buddy just a few days prior to Thanksgiving. As I darted to and fro in my tiny
By: Norton von Spudley
betta bowl at the local pet store, a mere speck of a fish, I spotted the girl who would come to adopt me. As she peered through the plastic, fascinated by my deep blue hue and pointy nose, I waved my sheer fins ecstatically and stared intently into her face. It was love at first sight. Fast forward approximately one year, eight months, one week and four days later {fish keep impeccable time}, and our lives have been enriched by each other’s company - well, on the rare occasions she’s actually home of course. Most days have been spent examining my minithermometer {still waiting on a replacement for that, by the way}, combing the gravel for rogue bits of food and lunging out of the water at any who dare peer too closely into my bowl. And then there’s bath time, the dreaded uprooting of my dear plant and redecorating of my abode. As soon as I see the big yellow scoop come out, I flatten myself against the side of the container and refuse
to budge. Feeding times are another nuisance, as my human still insists on crushing my pellets into bits, forcing me to chase my tail for crumbs before they settle on the bottom, never to be seen again. But alas, I’m just a tiny curmudgeon of a fish, always looking for something to gripe about. Truth is, we are a match made in heaven, both preferring our solitude and possessing a bit of that OCD need to clean up our surroundings constantly. At the end of the day, she waves goodnight and turns off my desk lamp, and we part as friends . . . until the morning comes, and sleepyhead decides to hit snooze a few too many times, delaying my breakfast. Ah, the life of a fish. Eat, sleep, swim laps. Repeat. And on Fridays in August when my mommy dearest is drained of ideas for her column, I write. Pleasure to make your acquaintance, dear readers. Hope the rest of your summer goes swimmingly.

Nonstop Learning The North Bellmore School District’s Teacher Center has been full of activity and excitement this summer as teachers have been learning innovative ways to increase student engagement in the 2018-2019 school year and beyond. Dozens of educators from the five elementary schools have participated in workshops on literacy, math and teaching strategies. Courses, led by the district’s instructional coaches and consultants, provide teachers with ideas to enhance classroom instruction through fun, engaging and purposeful lessons. “We make the learning come to life,” said consultant Lindsey Andersen. “We get the teachers actively involved
and they take on the role of the learner.” In a three-day workshop, teachers created their own reader’s notebooks as they learned about a strategy that fosters a deeper understanding of literature. Instruction coach Cindy Quinn described the notebooks as a “platform for students to nurture and grow their ideas about reading.” Mini Math Camp gave teachers new ideas to make math lessons more engaging. Ms. Andersen said one of the suggestions was starting out each topic with an activity, such as a math scavenger hunt, rather than a lecture. The workshop included an escape room activity in which teachers had to complete five math problems to crack a code.
The Teacher Center was established 38 years ago as one of the first in New York State, and is located at the Jacob Gunther School. Throughout the year and during the summer, North Bellmore teachers attend professional development workshops at the center to deepen their understanding of content and share effective teaching strategies with each other. In addition to leading many of the training sessions, the district’s instructional coaches provide instructional support in classrooms throughout the year. These experienced teachers share their expertise across the curriculum to enhance instruction.

I question where you are What I picture is serene Wanting to be in a place Where memory erases All time and space It’s an ache, a wanderlust, but I think How can you be somewhere But not where I am . . . It must be the same for you As my heart wanders out into the stillness Capturing imagination without photos Now resting in the recesses of memory.

More than 100 Levittown students entering grades 3-5 have embraced the Levittown Public Schools’ Camp Invention this summer from July 16th27th at Wisdom Lane Middle School. The twoweek enrichment program, inspired by the inductees of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, encourages creativity, innovation and collaboration through a variety of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematic activities each day. With the guidance of certified teachers from throughout the district
and student volunteers from Division Avenue High School and MacArthur High School, who serve approximately 50 hours assisting with the program, campers rotate to different locations in the building during the day. They engage in STEAM activities such as building their own futuristic mini mansions, customizing their own robotic dog in Robotic Pet Vet, collaborating and crafting their own inventions in Stick To It and designing and testing tracks for their own Optibot, a self-driving bot that senses changes in
light. “I like that you get to make stuff and can keep trying until it works,” said incoming Gardiners Avenue fifth-grader Jake Hoelderlin. “My favorite part of camp so far was making a mini mansion.” In addition, the campers participate in Camp Invention games on a daily basis that encourage teamwork, cooperation and coordination skills. Creative problem solving skills are emphasized, rather than winning or losing and campers play and then reinvent classic games.
Innovators Shine
Problem-solving, collaboration and creativity are encompassed into one during the Levittown Public Schools’ brand new Middle School Robotics Camp at Wisdom Lane Middle School. Open to incoming sixth-, seventhand eighth-graders attending Jonas E. Salk Middle School and Wisdom Lane Middle School in the fall, the two-week summer enrichment program enables students to create their own working robots while learning to code. Campers rotate to different sessions throughout the day which include VEX and Edison Robotics. In VEX, students are transformed into innovators through Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic building activities. Putting their problem-solving skills to the test, campers engage in an electronic learning project called “Catch the Bug,” create and design their own electric race car, and design, build and code a VEX Robot. In Edison, the campers continue to learn about robotics and the coding that is involved through the Edison Robot. They build and write code for TRANSIT TEST - Campers created their own transportation prototype and tested it. their robot, allowing it to complete a variety of Photo courtesy of: Levittown Public Schools tasks. The robot allows for three different progressive coding formats to meet the individual level of the user and functions include responding to light and sound, line tracking and autonomous movement. At the conclusion of the program, the campers are able to take their robot kits home where they can continue to invent, build and program. “My favorite part about Robotics Camp is being able to build everything,” said incoming Jonas E. Salk Middle School sixthgrader Alyssa Wunsch. “I have a little robot at home PREPARING FOR WORK - Incoming sixth-graders Angelina Figgs (left) and but I’ve never been able Alyssa Wunsch (right) prepared to work on their Edison Robot. Photo courtesy of: to do anything like this with it. I also learned that Levittown Public Schools
sometimes I can’t do all of it without help.” Sessions are taught by certified teachers from throughout the district and student volunteers from Division Avenue High School and MacArthur High School help assist with the program. They play a valuable role in working with the campers and rotate to the different sessions with them. With all their hard work, the students put in approximately 50 hours of community service through the program. In addition to the
building and designing aspect of the program, campers also enjoy outdoor games on the back field where they can engage with their peers and embrace the warm weather.

Summer Tutorial A number of elementary and middle school students in the Levittown Public Schools received a head start on the 2018-2019 school year with the district’s four-week Summer Tutorial Program held at Levittown Memorial Education Center. The program, now in its 19th year, supports students entering grades 2-6 with math and reading review/remediation. Students attended one of two morning sessions, while supervisors and teachers Kristy Quinlan and Janet Jakubowski were instrumental in implementing and overseeing the program this summer. The students received instruction in a small group setting from highly qualified tutors while engaging in a curriculum that included reading, writing and math
activities. For the first time this year, students also utilized the computer based iReady Program for additional practice and assessments in both reading and math. Throughout the program, students were encouraged to independently read books and select from a variety of writing activities to culminate their reading. An incentive program was established to help motivate students to read as many books as possible throughout the
program. The student who read the most books at the end of the program was awarded a gift card. Each student’s progress was monitored by their tutors and supervisors throughout the program using the iReady program. “Students showed great strides in developing their academic abilities and confidence,” said Quinlan. “Overall, the students in the Summer Tutorial Program enjoyed interacting with their peers and tutor.”

Keep on Learning Once again, Birch School in Merrick opened its doors this summer to Merrick School District students in grades K-6 who are participating in fun, constructive and educational activities offered through the district’s Summer Recreation program, now in its 26th year. The Summer Recreation program provides students with various outlets to keep their hands and bodies moving and their minds sharp in a fun and relaxed, yet organized and productive environment. Opportunities include art, chef’s class, crafts, deejay instruction, game time (computer, board,
building and math-related activities), jewelry making and physical education. There is also the popular Chess Nuts program, run by the Long Island Chess Nuts not-for-profit organization, which is also offered in Merrick during the regular school year. Studies have linked chess to increased reading and math levels and also hones concentration, strategy skills, selfesteem and confidence in young children. Along with these enriching opportunities, Birch School also houses the district’s remedial program to help students reinforce concepts and skills learned this past

school year. In addition to the daily program, held Monday through Friday throughout the month of July, the Merrick Summer Recreation program incorporated fun guests and special themes to further inspire teamwork and make the days more fun. Special days held to date included “New York Day” and “Crazy Hair Day;” there was also “Good Citizenship Pizza Day,” “Red, White and Blue Day” (on July 3rd), as well as a pajama bagel breakfast and field day with ices provided as a refreshing treat. The program even welcomed the popular children’s character Chase from Paw Patrol and will cuminate with a family carnival. “This is like a second home to me,” said Melissa Robinson, who, along with Kelley Merkle, have been happily co-directing the program for the last 11 years. “The student campers are really enjoying themselves and getting the most from their experiences. Life is just better... at camp.”
