Class President Tara Cavanagh reflected on the four-year journey to finally become class night champions. “We learned from our

mistakes and spent four years trying to make things better,” she said. “Our class has proved themselves a lot these past four years.” Salutatorian Jessica Lin colorfully told her story of growing up with immigrant parents who operated a Chinese kitchen. “Through working at the restaurant, I’ve learned compassion and sacrifice, and I was able to translate these values into my time at Calhoun,” she added. “It also helped me learn how to bring people together through culture.” Valedictorian Senya Huda spoke about moving on. “Our time at Calhoun has not only told us what to learn, but how to learn,” she said. “It is now our job to use our education to help change the world and give back to our communities.”

Sharing Literacy Through careful planning and exceptional creativity, the East Meadow School District has built and installed “Little Free Libraries” at each of the five elementary school buildings. The initiative was created and implemented by District Director of Literacy and Funded Programs, Mr. Frank Lukasik. Additionally, each individual library was constructed by East Meadow students enrolled in the district’s carpentry classes which are led by teachers Mr. Scott Stacy and Mr. John Scerbo. There are more than

75,000 “Little Free Libraries” around the world in 85 countries. East Meadow joins the movement to share books, bring people together and create a community of readers. The “Little Free Libraries” were installed for everyone in the community to promote literacy through book sharing. The district encourages readers to not only select a book to read, but to also add books to the collections at the elementary schools. The Social Brain is a brand new 501(c)(3) non profit in the state of New York. They are on the brink of breaking through as one of the most unique and helpful organizations that serves those suffering from a brain injury. Their mission is to provide brain injury survivors the opportunity to build friendships through socialization and reduced isolation. This organization began in January 2019 when a group of individuals, families and professionals joined together to brainstorm ideas of how they can help brain injury survivors socialize and partake in various hobbies together. Many survivors spend much of their lives in and out of rehab and home feeling isolated, but The Social Brain formed to change that. After hosting various events for survivors such as a day at Sweetbriar Nature Center, a Bowling Event, a Library Day and an afternoon at Four Star Ranch, it was obvious that they were reaching a population in need. Just last month, The Social Brain was granted 501(c)(3) status in the state of New York and they have just started working out of a community center located at 202 Middle Country Road in Middle Island. The Social Brain operates solely on volunteers and their outreach comes not only from word of mouth, but from help through their recent partnerships with local hospitals, school districts, neurology departments, Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead and St. Joseph’s College. Survivors from all over Long Island are welcome to get involved with The Social Brain. On average, each event they host has about 30-40 participates and there is no age restrictions. Recently a 4-week session hosted by The Social Brain and Peconic Speech Services in Riverhead started to help survivors learn social skills, build friendships, find cues from others and interact with peers. The first session was on August 6th and the following 3 sessions will be on August 13th, 20th and 27th. Age groups are broken down from ages 5-7, 8-12, teens and adults. information. On August 16th at 6:30PM, The Social Brain is hosting a “Basket Night Fundraiser” at the Sound Beach Property Owners Association. If you bring school supplies to be donated, you will receive a single raffle ticket for each item you donate. Additionally, on September 22nd all are welcome to come support this organization and enjoy an afternoon out at the ballpark with family and friends! The Social Brain is hosting a day at the ballpark to watch the Long Island Ducks game at 1:35PM. Tickets are $15.00 a person and parking is free. There will be a pre-game autograph session with all players on the field and children will be able to run the bases post game. Program Marks Its 20th Year The Levittown Public Schools recently hosted its successful Summer Tutorial Program at the Levittown Memorial Education Center. Now in its 20th year, the fourweek program offers reading and math review/ remediation for second through sixth grade students in the Levittown Public Schools. Eighty students enrolled in the program this summer and attended one of two morning sessions to build their skills in preparation for the 2019-2020 school year. Supervisors/teachers Kristy Quinlan and

Janet Jakubowski were instrumental in implementing and overseeing the program. Each week the students received instruction in small group settings from highly qualified tutors and were engaged in the Summer Success curriculum which included reading, writing and math activities. The students also utilized the computer based I-Ready Program for additional practice and assessments in reading and math which helped the tutors and supervisors monitor their progress. In addition, students were encouraged to

independently read books during the program and select from a variety of writing activities to culminate their reading. An incentive program was put into action to help motivate students to read as many books as possible throughout the program. The student who read the most books at the end of the program was awarded a gift card to Friendly’s. Video Scholarship Contest The Pedestrian Education Video Scholarship Competition is offered by the New York State Coalition for Transportation Safety. The competition is part of the Walk Safe Long Island campaign organized by the Long Island Health Collaborative in partnership with the Coalition and health and safety educators from across Nassau and Suffolk Counties.

Some Long Island communities have a particularly poor driving record and are among the worst in the state. When New York State communities were ranked by the number of pedestrian crashes that occurred between 2009 and 2013, Long Island communities accounted for eight of the top twenty communities ranked, and Hempstead had the highest number of crashes of all

communities in upstate New York and Long Island. Other ranked communities included Brookhaven (number 7), Islip (number 8), Oyster Bay (number 9), N. Hempstead (number 10), Babylon (number 11), Huntington (number 14), and Freeport (number 19). For this scholarship contest, students simply need to create a short video that illustrates one or more of the Vehicle and Traffic Laws for Pedestrian

Enforcement. The intent of the competition is to encourage more widespread understanding about various pedestrian/ traffic safety laws.
