Journey Of A Lifetime By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Where to begin… First trip abroad… first time on a plane – ever… first time away on vacation with 12 members of the family – or, the “traveling circus,” as I like to call it… So many memories, so many column topics… How does one encapsulate a nine-day, eight-night whirlwind cross-country excursion around Ireland, home of (at least a portion of) my paternal ancestors? To start, it was quite the action-packed adventure, from the first wakeup call of each morning right on through to the final toast of the evening. In between, there was no shortage of breathtaking scenery to take in, of history to absorb, of culinary
choices to sample, all the while experiencing it with family – as well as the other members of our tour group fortunate enough to ride along with the Ryan Family Magical Mystery Tour. Being the photog that I am, I was most looking forward to capturing the entire journey on camera, from takeoff to landing and everything in between. And that I did, perhaps a bit excessively, as my final total (minus many deletes along the way) came in just shy of 800 pictures. But being able to preserve it all – the sights and sounds, the candid moments, the vain attempts to gather everyone for “just one more” group photo… you can’t put a price on that. I may never travel to Ireland again, and maybe not
anywhere with the same cast of characters – which was why this trip was such a “mustgo,” despite my own lack of plane travel experience. You only live once, right? And, in the end, it was exactly as I expected, exciting and thrilling and adventurous and memorable in every way. And now that I have a passport, it sure gave me the bug to expand that itinerary to other countries that I’ve always wanted to see. Hmmm… where to next? But future plans aside, all the months of preparation, both at home and at work, certainly paid off in the form of a precious memory I will always carry with me. And if ever that memory starts to fade, I have about 800 or so photos to refresh it!

Like Father, Like Son
Since I was a little kid, my dad has told me about his first car, a 1972 Chevy Blazer. He spoke about that car with so much pride. He loved every rust-covered inch of that deathtrap. It cost him sixhundred dollars, and got him where he needed to be. It wasn’t fancy, but he had earned it. My dad worked tirelessly scraping sprinkles off of the floor of his local Carvel for that car. Now, thirty years later, I am in the same position. I am a sixteen year-old who has held a steady summer job for the past four years. Last month, after saving every penny, I was finally
able to buy a 1998 Jeep Wrangler. Although it was a little pricier than my dad’s vehicle, my first car stands for the same thing. It has been said that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Our first cars are the two pieces of machinery that unify us. Is it possible for something as simple and lifeless as a car to say so much about our relationship? My dad’s life lessons have had an impact on my life. His parents didn’t buy him a car, and even though mine offered, they didn’t buy me one either. I am proud to say that, much like my father, I bought
my own first car. The excitement of purchasing my first vehicle was overwhelming. The pride I felt putting that coconut air freshener upon my rearview mirror was immense. I knew that it was finally time to show off what my hard work had earned me. While my friends were at the beach, I was bussing tables; but now, they are all asking me for rides. It is a great feeling to be one of the few from my generation who can say that they bought their first car with their own hard earned money. Like father, like son.

Dance Festival A Success Internationally recognized dance companies and fastrising choreographers shared the picturesque stage of the 19th annual edition of Fire Island Dance Festival on July 19th-21st, raising a record $393,647 for Dancers Responding to AIDS, a program of Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. For the third year in a row the festival set a fundraising record, surpassing last year’s all-time high of $374,260. In its 19 editions, Fire Island Dance Festival has raised $3.3 million for the most vulnerable among us, helping to ensure they receive life-saving medications and health care, nutritious meals, counseling and emergency financial assistance. host, this time sharing his dance prowess in a whimsical, Al Blackstone-choreographed version of “Turkey Lurkey Time” from the Broadway musical Promises, Promises. Save-A-Pet Sendoff Save-A-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. held an official send-off on July 23rd for Lucky, the dog who had been on “death row” for killing a cat. Lucky’s life was spared after a court ruling that he leave the state. During the initial court case, the judge ruled for Lucky to be destroyed. But upon appeal, the pit bull mix was freed from the Brookhaven Town Shelter after 14 months in “doggy jail” when the cat’s owner’s lawsuit was settled. Both sides agreed that Lucky would not be destroyed, but that he would be ordered to leave the state. Up until July 23rd, he had been housed at Save-APet, as its Founder/President Dori Scofield is the former Brookhaven Shelter Supervisor and the dog held a special place in her heart. “Lucky and I go way back. He is a very special dog and it broke my heart to think he could’ve been euthanized for killing a cat – something that New York State law does not recognize as a valid reason for destroying a dog upon first offense. This was an unfortunate incident and it’s sad for the owner of the cat, but Lucky was just being a dog and doing what many dogs would naturally do.” In March 2012, a Suffolk district court judge ordered that Lucky be destroyed, even though he had not been previously deemed dangerous, which is a requirement the judicial ruling with the help of attorney Amy Chaitoff under state law. Lucky’s owner, Joey Mantle, appealed and Smithtown-based Guardians of Rescue, of which Ms.
Scofield is the Vice President. Unable to cover the costs of the appeal, Mr. Mantle relinquished custody his dog to Guardians of Rescue. The case was won, under the condition that Lucky leave the state within 60 days. “Lucky has remained calm throughout this entire ordeal,” said Ms. Scofield. “While at Brookhaven, he wasn’t allowed to play with other dogs or be let outside by anyone but specified handlers. That situation would prove difficult for most dogs, but not Lucky. He took it all in stride. We’ll be very sad to see him leave Save-APet, but are so happy his life was spared with the help of Ms. Chaitoff and Guardians of Rescue.” On Tuesday, July 23rd, the shelter held an official sendoff in honor of Lucky’s second chance. Guests, including Mr. Mantle, enjoyed pizza and cake and Mr. Mantle was able to say an emotional goodbye to his former pet. Ms. Scofield then met up with an experienced transporter/ trucker at a rest stop on the New Jersey Turnpike for the first leg of Lucky’s journey. He is then headed to Denver, Colorado before continuing on with another transporter to Arizona, who will meet up with Hillarie Allison, Founder/President of Rescue Unwanted Furry Friends Foundation (RUFFF) in Golden Valley, where Lucky will be trained before being available for adoption to a suitable home. “Most kids leave camp with a T-shirt. Ours leave with a new outlook on life.” Good Shepherd Hospice and the Robert L. Sweeney Foundation presented Bob Sweeney’s Camp H.O.P.E., a free two day children’s bereavement camp held this year on Saturday, July 13th and Sunday, July 14th. The event takes place on the beautiful grounds of Camp Alvernia in Centerport with the goal to help grieving children of Nassau and
both the hospice and the community. The camp program includes recreational games, arts and crafts, and grief work activities, including a “grief walk” for peer discussions with professional staff group leaders, and a closing memorial ceremony with a white dove release. The dove’s arc in flight circling the harbor twice before departing, representing a way for each child and caregiver who attends the camp to send their wishes
Suffolk counties and their caregivers heal from their loss in a safe, fun and healthy environment. The camp is christened “Bob Sweeney’s Camp H.O.P.E.” in memory of Robert L. Sweeney, who died while being cared for by Good Shepherd Hospice in February of 2002. Celebrating its tenth summer of operation, Camp H.O.P.E. welcomes grieving families of all faiths to share their grief experiences with others.
The program is open to families who were served by Good Shepherd Hospice as well as from the community at large. Children participants are between the ages of five and seventeen and are required to be accompanied by a parent or caregiver at the camp. Paralleling the children’s progress over the two days, adult caregivers also meet at Camp Alvernia. The adult program offers a variety of discussion and support

Golf Outing A Success On July 8th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. held its third annual Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor Memorial Golf Outing at the Huntington Country Club. Seventy golfers took part in the event, which raised $70,000 for Alzheimer’s Disease research and care.
Golfers also had the chance to win a car in the Hole-In-One Challenge sponsored by MercedesBenz of Smithtown. After playing a round of golf, the participants enjoyed a cocktail hour, dinner and a chance to win some raffle prizes. The event is named
after Col. Kenneth F. Lawlor, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. His grandson, Keith Lawlor, who chaired the golf tournament, is also Vice President of ADRC’s Board of Directors. Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center — which

Graduate Program Grant Southampton resident and Stony Brook Foundation Trustee Dorothy Lichtenstein has made a $1 million gift to Stony Brook Southampton Graduate Arts programs. The gift was announced on July 17th during the annual Southampton Writers Conference opening night, which featured a conversation about writing with former PBS News Hour anchor and novelist Jim Lehrer and his wife, novelist Kate Lehrer. Ms. Lichtenstein, President of the Roy Lichtenstein Foundation, is a longtime supporter of Stony Brook Southampton Graduate Arts programs; first as a frequent audience member at events and then as a writing workshop participant. “The growth I’ve witnessed in the last decade has been nothing short of amazing,” said Ms. Lichtenstein, citing new graduate programs in theatre, publishing, visual arts, and digital filmmaking, a presence in Manhattan, and programs designed to train young writers and artists on the East End. “This gift reflects my confidence in President Stanley’s leadership and the University’s commitment to excellence in the arts at Stony Brook Southampton. Graduate Program Rankings Stony Brook University has been ranked eighth on U.S.News & World Report’s Best Online Graduate Nursing Programs list for 2013. The rankings recognized the best online graduate nursing programs based on factors such as faculty credentials, academic support services, technologies offered to students, graduation rates and admissions selectivity. “We are very honored that our online nursing programs are among the best in the nation,” said Dr. Lee Anne Xippolitos, Dean of Stony Brook’s School of Nursing. “This ranking is important because it affirms our commitment to be a national leader in nursing education through the delivery of innovative student-centered curricula.” In 1994, the School of Nursing developed one of the nation’s first distancelearning programs, Nurse Midwifery. The distance
education nursing roster has since expanded to include clinical specialties in Adult Health, Child Health, Neonatal Health, Mental Health and Women’s Health. The School also offers an online Post-Master’s Advanced Certificate Program, a Master of Science in Nursing Education Program, and plans to introduce a Master of Science in Nursing Leadership Program in January 2014. Stony Brook’s learnercentered curricula prepare nurses to promote, maintain, supervise and restore health; identify health risks; and assess, diagnose and manage patients. Students are prepared to function as nurse educators, leaders, consultants, advocates and change agents — key components of the advanced practice role. Enrollment for the online nursing programs is on the rise, said Dean
Xippolitos. Currently, there are 475 students, up from 383 in fall 2012. To compile the rankings, U.S.News & World Report sent questionnaires to 471 institutions that granted Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission accredited graduate degree programs in nursing. Respondents were asked to identify whether in academic year 2012–2013 they would be offering a master’s in nursing degree through Internet-based distance education courses. Between the start of data collection in late July 2012 and the fall 2012 closing date, 280 institutions (59 percent) replied, with 101 (36 percent) reporting they planned to offer an online master’s in nursing degree program. Golf Classic A Success The heat and humidity were high, but so were spirits for the annual St. Joseph Hospital Golf Classic on June 24th at Woodside Acres in Muttontown. In spite of a midafternoon rain delay, the 75 golfers enjoyed the
top notch course on the country club’s rolling hills, a barbecue lunch and an elegant dinner sponsored by Premier Care. The event, attended by physicians, staff, vendors and friends of St. Joseph, raised more than $70,000, with the proceeds

FEMA TRAINING - NuHealth’s team of eight received emergency management training provided by FEMA’S Center for Domestic Preparedness in Anniston, Alabama. The team consisted of staff from the Emergency Department, Safety Department, Administration Department, Nursing Department, Social Work Department, Ambulatory and Medicine Department. The group participated in Healthcare Leadership and Hospital Emergency Response Training.
The Rotary Club of the Moriches held its 45th annual Duck Race & BBQ at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck on July 13th. As part of the event, the club held a special duck race in which someone had the chance to win $1 million. However none of the preselected ducks finished in first or tenth place and so the prizes went to the top three winners. Part of the proceeds went to benefit Camp PaQua-Tuck. Winners of the Duck Race were as follows: • 1st Place — Donna Wish ($1,000) • 2nd Place — Deborah
Brown-Volkmann ($500) • 3rd Place — Julie Pratt ($250) The race was preceded by the Big Duck Race, which was won by Kim Stevens. She won $2,650 for first place. This year’s event served BBQ duck and chicken dinners, hamburgers, hot dogs, lobster, and Indian food. Children got to play in the bouncy houses and go on a hayride, and those in attendance were treated to live music. There were also raffles and prizes, with proceeds also going to the camp. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is
a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Headquartered at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, Talon Air, Inc., premier provider of luxury private air transportation, worked closely with not-forprofit Patient AirLift Services (PALS) to fly seven children who have experienced traumatic burns to The Arthur C. Luf Children’s Burn Camp in Union, CT early this week. The camp, which provides services for children ages 8-18, is supported by the Connecticut Burns Care Foundation and is the only one of its kind in the Northeast. Accompanied by two adult counselors, the seven children, ages 11-16, were driven from Canada across the border to Massena, NY where they were flown by Talon Air to Bradley, CT near the camp. During their week-long stay, the children are participating
in activities focused on building self-esteem and self-confidence, overcoming anxieties, and adapting physically and socially to their injuries. Since 2011, Talon Air has partnered with PALS to assist in getting essential healthcare services to children and adults who are not able to endure commercial travel, have limited financial resources, or live in an area where toplevel care is not available. Military personnel and their families are among the many people who have benefited from this program. Talon Air Founder and CEO Adam Katz is deeply committed to combining his passion for private aviation with his unwavering dedication to humanitarian efforts. “I’m so grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this extraordinary

Realtor Mara Navaretta of Woodbury, and her agency, Homes By Mara Realty of Syosset, recently awarded the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation (CBTF) a $1,000.00 check that was made possible from a percentage of commissions collected between her and participating agents. This is the latest contribution that Navaretta and her agency has made to the nonprofit organization this year and stems from a long-term commitment that the agency made to supporting the organization back in January 2012. Inspired by personal friend Fred Adlman and his wife, Bonnie, who tragically suffered the loss of their daughter Jill in 1990 due to a brain tumor, Navaratta said she and her agents are delighted to be able to extend their support to assist CBTF in its mission to improve the treatment, quality of life and long term outlook for children with brain and spinal cord tumors. “I cannot help but be moved by the tremendous courage and perseverance that these children impacted by this diseases and their families demonstrate each and every day,” says Navaretta, who has an eight year old daughter of her own. “The programs and advocacy that

he worked as a professional airbrush artist in Colorado. Rising Stars Celebrated The talented teens in the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) Class of 2013 have reason to celebrate this summer. Not only did students receive their high school diplomas, but many of them will be financing their higher education with monies earned from scholarships and grants. Thirty-seven of this year’s graduates collectively garnered more than $5.5 million. LIHSA, named “Best Art School” for the past three years, is the first step these students take toward success in their dream jobs. For many of them, being accepted to a world-renowned college or conservatory to further their studies brings them closer to their goals of attaining careers in the arts. Making sure they receive the scholarships and grants to make those dreams a reality is just part of what the teachers at LIHSA do each and every day. In addition to helping their students prepare for auditions, organize portfolios and complete college applications, the teaching staff also steers
the aspiring artists — whose interests range from dancing, singing and painting to playwriting, directing and designing sets — toward all the specialized honors, awards and opportunities available to them. All that hard work has paid off handsomely. This year’s graduates have made some compelling achievements. Film students Brenda Cespedes and Erick Urquilla debuted their documentary “The Spirit of Long Beach,” about Hurricane Sandy’s devastating effect on that community. The film was received at the Long Island Film Festival. Dance student Liesl Jaye made it to Broadway, performing in “How The Grinch Stole Christmas” this year and joining the cast of “Hello Dolly” in the fall. Liesl is also one of three LIHSA students, along with theater students Matthew Kunkel and Emily McPherson, to be named a Scholar-Artist by Newsday and the Long Island Arts Alliance. Film student Alec Urbach earned a bronze medallion in the 2013 Prudential Spirit of
Community Awards, for his international education project. “I know that, to all of us, this place is magical,” student speaker Matthew Kunkel reminded his fellow graduates of their now alma mater. “LIHSA is not just a school, it’s a home. I challenge all of you to go beyond expectations, and remember who you are and what you learned here. Our future is in front of us and, because of LIHSA, there is nothing that will stop us.”

Northport resident Marc Salmin recently donated a painting he made to McPeak’s Assisted Living to show the facility’s staff members his appreciation of the way they care for his father, Alex. Mr. Salmin’s father has been a resident of McPeak’s since 2011. Mr. Salmin recreated “Louisa in the Outside Studio,” which was originally done by William Starkweather, an American Impressionist painter. Mr. Starkweather started his artistic career in the late 1890s as a student at the Art Students League in New York City. He frequently took painting trips through the Northeast, including New York; Eastport, Maine; and Grand Manan Island,

Damon Runyon 5K On the morning of Sunday, August 18th, thousands of sports fans, runners, walkers, cancer survivors, and their friends and family will gather at Yankee Stadium to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Damon Runyon 5K at Yankee Stadium. More than dozen of the runners are cancer survivors from Long Island who are running to help fund the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation’s groundbreaking efforts to strike out cancer. These courageous Long Islanders are traveling from towns as far as Manorville to Great River to Baldwin for this very personal and worthy cause. The Runyon 5K has become one of New York’s most unique summer events and is the only charitable run/walk that uses the iconic Stadium as its course. Since the inaugural event in 2009, the 5K has raised more than $2 million for the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation’s groundbreaking efforts to strike out cancer. Participants can register to run or simply donate to support a one of the runners at www.runyon5k. org. Participants must pay a $50 registration fee and meet a $60 fundraising minimum. Friends, family and supporters will have a chance to watch the race from the
Delta SKY360° Suite overlooking home plate and meet the Damon Runyon scientists their contributions help support. The first heat of competitive runners will take off from the start line inside Gate 4 at 9:30 a.m., followed by heats
of recreational runners and walkers, with the last heat taking off in the early afternoon. Participants will wind through the legendary ballpark’s concourses and ramps, climb stairs between levels, and appear on the centerfield video board as they take two laps around the warning track that circles the field. As always, 100% of all donations raised by participants will directly support the nation’s most brilliant young
scientists, pursuing cures for all forms of cancer. “Over the past five years, the proceeds from the Runyon 5K have allowed us to fund amazing cancer researchers doing incredible work,” said Lorraine W. Egan, President and CEO of the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation. “Our 5K participants have made breakthroughs possible – it’s as simple as that.” The Runyon 5K is the latest chapter in the Damon Runyon Cancer Research Foundation’s long history with the Yankees. After the Foundation’s establishment in 1946, Joe DiMaggio was on its Board of Directors and Mickey Mantle was an active fundraiser. Damon Runyon himself was a New York writer who began his career as a baseball journalist, revolutionizing how the game was covered and often reporting on Yankees games.
