Nearly 1,000 PSEG Long Island employees showed their community spirit on Tuesday, July 25th, helping to raise thousands of dollars for four Long Island charities by taking part in the Marcum Workplace Challenge at Jones Beach State Park. PSEG Long Island orange was the most common color in the crowds at Long Island’s largest corporate picnic event and 3.5-mile fun run. Once everyone crossed the finish line, the utility was recognized for having the most participants and for raising the most money through contributions beyond the registration fee.
In addition to the entry fee, a portion of which supports local charities, PSEG Long Island employees contributed $3,100 in voluntary donations. “This is always my favorite day of the year at PSEG Long Island. It’s always great to see our employees come out to the beach every year to show our spirit and commitment for such a great cause and give back to the communities we serve,” said Dave Daly, President and COO, PSEG Long Island. “It’s a fun way to show everyone the dedication that drives our company, and I’m very proud to be a part of it.”

Girl Scouts Return to Headquarters
More than 12,000 people and 200 companies typically participate in the Marcum Workplace Challenge. Proceeds go to benefit four local charities: Long Island Cares Inc. The Harry Chapin Food Bank; The Long Island Children’s Museum; Children’s Medical Fund of New York; and The Nassau County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. PSEG Long Island, which operates the Long Island Power Authority’s energy grid under contract, is committed to serving the community. Employees participated in nearly 800 volunteer events last year.
Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) announced today that it will return to its headquarters located at 110 Ring Road, Garden City, this August, after spending a year temporarily relocated in Hicksville, while their facility was being renovated. The headquarters - which houses the GSNC corporate offices, Cookie Cupboard and Girl Scout Shop underwent extensive upgrades, executed by
design firm Danita Otruba Architect of Westbury. “We worked with our architect to ensure that our building would live up to the Girl Scout Mission and Laws. Namely to make the world a better place and to use our resources wisely! This means we have incorporated architectural and design innovations that are environmentally friendly and will bring us into the future with a focus on giving every G.I.R.L.

Much has been written about the expense of living on Long Island, especially for us young-ish folk who have only recently set out on our own, away from the comfy confines of our childhood homes. I know plenty of fellow Lindy friends who have moved across the country upon graduating, precisely for this reason; however, just as many remain in the area, toughing out life on LI. Our mission: to make ends meet so as not to be forced to flee this island oasis that we call home. Sure, you may indeed get more for your money elsewhere; but where else can you be equidistant from the great landmarks of Manhattan and the beautiful beaches of Montauk? A mere vacation getaway for some, we are fortunate to reside here year round, through all four seasons of splendor. In that sense, there
are some perks you simply can’t put a price on. As often as I think I am paying way too much to live in my one bedroom apartment, when I take a look at the pristine grounds surrounding me, I realize I wouldn’t have it any other way. Nearly five years later, my little haven is quite completely furnished, and I have accumulated enough seasonal decor to last a lifetime, maybe two. Closet space… well, that’s another matter entirely. To think I have managed to fill every square inch of available storage in such a short span of time; well, it’s really pretty impressive (said she sheepishly). First item on the autumn “To Do” list: purge those closets, drawers and unreachable shelves of anything unnecessary. Consolidate, donate; whatever it takes to create a little more
breathing room. And stay away from those sales, more importantly, or we’ll be right back in the same boat a few months down the line. Perhaps my favorite space of all, though, is my little outdoor deck. While the view consists mainly of a parking lot and other surrounding apartments, I have made it my mission to fill the area with plants in every corner, twinkly white lights, solar garden ornaments - and of course my aqua-colored Adirondack chairs, the perfect accessory for all seasons. Many a summer day has been spent lounging here, listening to the sounds of birds chirping in the nearby tree, squirrels scurrying to and fro and watching the sun’s glow rise and fall as the hours pass. Living on Long Island… it ain’t for everyone, to be sure but I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Cutting Edge Renovations This summer, Nassau BOCES is making significant improvements to its Joseph M. Barry Career & Technical Education Center. Ongoing construction will upgrade instructional space at Barry Tech, keeping the facilities on the cutting-edge of industry expectations and benefitting CTE students at both the high school and adult education levels from 7:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Phase one of construction guarantees that all Barry Tech automotive shops will continue to meet the most current industry standards. Construction is almost completed on a brand new, state-of-the-art auto mechanics classroom and shop - a workspace that is on par with service areas at professional dealerships. This phase ensures that the shops and all the equipment in them meet industry certification requirements as well as the addition of Snap-On certifications, making Barry Tech the only Snap-
On certified school in New York State. In addition, all four auto shops will now occupy the same wing of the building, facilitating collaborative instruction. Phase two of the project provides a much larger instructional and work space for Construction Trades courses, which include carpentry, masonry, electricity, plumbing and much more. This expanded, improved space will accommodate a greater number of students, helping to meet the demands of ever-growing enrollment for these strong careers on Long Island. Phase two will also retrofit the Welding classroom and enhance the design of existing instructional space. All classrooms will be equipped with the latest, industry-compliant equipment. “We are extremely excited about the improvements to our Barry Tech facilities and very grateful to the members
of the educational and employer communities for their support,” said Gene Silverman, Executive Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Regional Schools and Instructional Programs. “Construction is progressing on time and on target, with zero impact on instruction. All of these essential renovations were planned based on conversations with our industry and college partners, so that we may continue to meet all career standards. We’re taking the facility we already have and maximizing every square foot for instruction. Our goal is to give our students every opportunity to become fully prepared to enter the workforce and meet the ever-changing demands of industry on Long Island.” This fall, Nassau BOCES plans to hold a ribbon cutting ceremony to present the newly renovated facilities to the community.

Golf Outing Set The Marty Lyons Foundation (MLF) Long Island Chapter will host its 19th annual Golf Outing on Monday, September 25th, at the St. George’s Golf & Country Club in East Setauket. The event honoree is James Booth, VP of JBH Environmental. The golf outing will be a fund raising event to benefit the Foundation’s mission, which is to grant children with lifethreatening or terminal illnesses their special wishes. Registration and continental breakfast will begin at 9 a.m. followed by a shotgun start at 10:45 a.m. The cocktail hour will begin at 4:30 p.m. followed by dinner. The Marty Lyons Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Marty Lyons, a former NFL defensive lineman for the New York Jets and member of the legendary “New York Sack Exchange.” Marty Lyons’ determination
led to the establishment of the Foundation after experiencing three lifealtering events in March of 1982. These moments forced him to “see the frailty, unfairness and the wonder of life.” With the encouragement of his family and friends, he formed the Marty Lyons Foundation in December of 1982. Since then, the organization has worked to keep hope alive in the hearts of thousands of children and provide support to their families. The Marty Lyons Foundation provides wishes to children aged 3 to 17 years old who have been diagnosed as having terminal or lifethreatening illnesses. MLF is unique in that it will consider granting a second wish to a deserving child who may need the hope and inspiration to face the battle of their lives for the second time around. Since it was established, the Marty Lyons Foundation
has granted 7,300 wishes that have brightened the lives of countless children. “By playing a fun-filled day of golf or attending the dinner, supporters help provide the Foundation with the much needed resources to fulfill its mission of granting children their special wishes. Though the outing is limited to 144 golfers, others are welcomed to join the festivities during the cocktail hour and dinner,” said Marty Lyons, Founder and Chairman of the Marty Lyons Foundation. Museum Welcomes New Armor
the Dingo continued to serve the British Army until 1952 and the armies of Portugal and Cyprus into the 1970s,” explained museum director Mark Renton. The Dingo is one of the vehicles found in the background of the current movie “Dunkirk.” Several hundred of these scout cars were left throughout France as the British were forced to abandon all their equipment while being rescued by a flotilla of Royal Navy ships and private vessels following German victories. The Dingo had 4-wheel drive for reliable off-road travel and also 4-wheel steering, giving the compact scout car an incredibly tight turning radius of less than 25 feet. The Museum of American Armor, located inside Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, is now home to a British World War II armor legend, the Dingo, an armored scout car that would have been found on the beaches of Dunkirk during the retreat of 1940 and helping liberate the Nazi death camps in 1945. “Of modest size, the Dingo was fast, reliable and literally served the British from the beginning of World War II to the end of that conflict. It was deployed in all theaters of the conflict, from the Libyan desert fighting Rommel to the British reconnaissance units that came upon the infamous Bergen-Belsen concentration camp as the Nazi Third Reich was collapsing. As a further measure of its design,
fuel tank, was economical enough to give the car a range of about 200 miles. Its two man crew, a driver and a radio operator/ gunner, was protected by relatively light armor, but capable of stopping most enemy pistol and rifle rounds. The museum’s Dingo also carries a replica .303 caliber Bren Gun used by the British. Museum associate board member Eileen Daly Sapraicone explained, “The ability to create an Allied armored column that replicates the sights and sounds of World War II is one of the most compelling educational tools we have to recount the story of democracy’s courage, valor and sacrifice. Place it in this setting of Old Bethpage Village Restoration during special weekends when an environment so reminiscent of the WWII era countryside, and you have created a virtual time machine that ensures indelible memories for entire families.” The Museum of American Armor is open Wednesday through Sunday between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., admission is $12 for adults, $7 for children (5-12), seniors (60+) veterans, the physically challenged, and volunteer firefighters with ID. ENL Jumpstart A summer program in the Levittown School District that provides additional support to English as a New Language students had a new look this year. In addition to literacy instruction, the ENL Jumpstart program included science and technology classes. More than 50 students, entering kindergarten through sixth grade, enrolled in the free threeweek program. They came for three hours a day, double the amount of instruction time offered in past years. Children began each day with a warm-up activity, such as coloring, before rotating through literacy, science and technology blocks, as well
as snack and movement time. In the literacy centers, younger students focused on letter identification and sounds, while older elementary students read short stories and wrote responses. They also kept daily journals. The new STEM classes, led by a middle school science teacher, included the study of the butterfly life cycle, dissection of owl pellets and building of racecars, planes and boats. Many of those activities took place in the outdoor classroom at the Levittown Memorial Education Center. There were also themed activities in all classes. Children learned about dinosaurs by reading
books, doing computer research and creating imprints. “This program is really a bridge between last year and the upcoming school year,” said ENL teacher Carol Rimler, coordinator of the summer program. “The children really benefit because they need the continuum of services. It’s also a nice way for them to get out and socialize.” Michele Ortiz, the district supervisor of ENL, added that the program gave incoming kindergartners the chance to learn about basic classroom routines. All students in the program also received information about obtaining a public library card to continue their literacy growth.

Children played games, created art, baked, built robots and improved their critical thinking skills in courses including American Girl Party, DIY (Do It Yourself) Crafts,
Flag Football, Minecraft, Robotics, Cupcake Wars, Gymnastics, Tennis Time and, new this year, Ultimate Golf. The program concluded on July 28th with a student performance showcase for families and friends made up of dances, skits and songs that demonstrated the children’s hard work over the summer.

Survivors Honored
On Thursday, July 20th, 33 students who had been treated at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital for pediatric cancer, were the recipients of this year’s Dan Brooks Memorial Education Award. The award ceremony was held at the Hilton Garden Inn on the Stony Brook University Campus. The Sunrise Fund’s Daniel Brooks Memorial Educational Award for Students with Cancer was established in memory of Dan Brooks, a young man who completed treatment for leukemia at Stony Brook University Medical Center. Following his treatment, Dan went on to obtain his degree in Special Education. He felt his experience with childhood cancer motivated him to pursue a career helping children who also faced challenges. Additionally, Dan played a significant role in the development of the School Intervention and Re-entry Program, which transitions children with cancer back to the classroom following cancer treatment. Sadly, Dan’s life was cut tragically short in a motor vehicle accident. His spirit and dedication to education, and children with cancer, prevail through this program. The award was first given in 2003 to 4 student patients. Since then, we have presented 356 awards to 125 patients, totaling over $258,000.
100% of this money was raised by the grassroots efforts of staff, patients and their families, and our neighboring communities via walk-a-thons, car shows, calendar sales, and more. All graduates of the Pediatric Oncology Program at Stony Brook Children’s who are pursuing post High School education/training are eligible for this award. Two patients treated for potentially lifethreatening brain aneurysms will tell their stories when the Brain Aneurysm Center at Northwell Health’s Neuroscience Institute, along with the Brain Aneurysm Foundation (BAF), host Long Island’s Ninth Annual Brain Aneurysm Awareness Four-Mile Fun Run/TwoMile Walk at Jones Beach State Park on Saturday, September 23rd. Proceeds from the walk will benefit Northwell Health’s Brain Aneurysm Brook University Center and the BAF, • Kyle Gutman, Syracuse helping support essential research into how to help University prevent cases of ruptured • Ryan Harrington, aneurysms. mother complained of severe headaches prior to the fatal aneurysm. Decades later, when Ms. Bongiorno started to experience headaches herself, she knew that she should get screened. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed a brain aneurysm, and while it was small and would normally be left alone to be monitored over time, she was told to see a specialist because of her family history. Upon reviewing the MRI scan, Dr. Chalif explained that due to her family history, the aneurysm should be closely monitored for any changes in development. Ms. Bongiorno went for annual follow-ups over the next few years, but it wasn’t until August 2016 when growth was detected through a computed axial tomography (CAT) scan. Dr. Chalif clipped the aneurysm, cutting off blood flow to the artery in an October 2016 procedure. Clipping a brain aneurysm is a surgical procedure performed on both ruptured and unruptured aneurysms. The neurosurgeon works through a small opening in the skull, and once the aneurysm is located with the operating microscope, the neurosurgeon eliminates blood flow by placing a clip across the aneurysm’s base – allowing blood to flow normally elsewhere in the brain. Ms. Bongiorno has no neurological deficits from the surgery and has since encouraged her own children, ages 19 and 21, to also get screened. Family history also led Ms. Smith to get screened. Her sister died from a brain aneurysm nearly two decades ago. This past summer, Ms. Smith’s primary care physician recommended she get screened due to family history. A magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA) was performed, which revealed a brain aneurysm. She was referred to Dr. Chalif, and upon reviewing the MRA images, Dr. Chalif said
she was a good candidate to receive endovascular treatment with coils and a stent – another, more minimally invasive procedure to treat the brain aneurysm. Ms. Smith underwent an endovascular coiling and stenting procedure in January, performed by Dr. Setton. Coiling a brain aneurysm requires the insertion of a catheter into the femoral artery in the leg, which is then navigated through the blood vessels into the brain where the aneurysm is located. Soft platinum coils and a stent are inserted through the catheter and deployed in the aneurysm. The coils conform to the shape of the aneurysm, fill the sac and block blood flow to the aneurysm to prevent the aneurysm from rupturing. “Approximately 5 percent of brain aneurysms are linked to a family history,” said Dr. Chalif. “But due to the decisive actions of Ms. Bongiorno and Ms. Smith seeking medical attention because of their family history, their lives were saved due to early detection. By sharing their stories at our walk this year, they will undoubtedly help us spread awareness about the warning signs of a brain aneurysm and the importance of getting screened if you have a family history. We are extremely grateful to both of them and they should be commended for their extraordinary courage and strength.” Registration for the walk begins at 8:30 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park, Field 5, 1000 Ocean Parkway, Wantagh. The start time is 10 a.m. and the event will be held rain or shine. The registration fee is $25 through September 9th, $30 afterward. Entry fee includes the cost of parking and snacks. Long Island Cruizin’ For a Cure will hold its 12th annual Car Show at 1400 Old Country Road in Westbury, a new location for the nonprofit organization. The show will be Sunday, September 10th from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is the only car show on the East Coast to offer men free onsite PSA screening tests for early detection of Prostate Cancer. A special program at noon will highlight the success of the nonprofit car show and the presentation of a check to Winthrop-University Hospital for prostate cancer research. Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure promises to be a family-centered fun day. Back by popular demand will be STARDUST and the Food Court. Free features include a KIDZ FUN ZONE with radio controlled model race car track. Cruizin’ For A Cure, organized by Prostate Cancer survivors and community volunteers in 2006, is dedicated to raising funds for Prostate Cancer research, education and early detection. Since its founding Cruizin’ has donated more than $120,000 to WinthropUniversity Hospital and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for
research. A huge crowd will be attracted once again to the Lee Iaccoca Foundation Award winning car show, where more than 450 cars and vehicles are expected to be exhibited. Sponsors include Champion Motors, AutoQuip, Alure Home Improvement, Rallye Motor Group, Robert Chevrolet and Trinity Solar, with more sponsors to come. There will be a dedicated tent where the PSA Prostate Cancer screening tests will be conducted FREE by Winthrop-University Hospital. Volunteers wearing grey “Survivor” LI Cruizin’ t-shirts will be encouraging men at the show to take advantage of the onsite free blood-screening tests. To date over 3,000 men have been screened at Cruizin’ For A Cure car shows and 148 of them with elevated PSA readings have been referred to their physicians for follow-up. “Last year 345 free PSA screening tests were conducted. Once again we plan to make a concerted effort to encourage men to take advantage of the free screening test. It will be a fabulous day with exhibitors, a KIDS FUN ZONE,
entertainment, vendors and sponsors. This will be our first year at the 1400 Old Country location, a slightly smaller location but vehicles will be parked on cement rather than dirt – a plus for the show participants. “Our volunteers, many of whom are Prostate Cancer survivors like me, are finalizing plans for a show that will delight people of all ages. The show’s popularity has been sustained because it offers something for everyone, not just car enthusiasts,” said Sandy Kane, Chair and Founder of LI Cruizin’ For A Cure Car Show. The September 10 car show promises to be a funfilled family-friendly day. For car collectors and vehicle enthusiasts it’s all about rods, customs, muscle and classic cars, specialty vehicles, antique fire apparatus and motorcycles. Look for the 50/50 raffle; an expanded food court and much more. Admission is $5; kids under 12 are free. The Long Island Nets are partnering with United Way of Long Island as part of their 9th annual StuffA-Bus campaign to help local students from lowincome families head back to school prepared, with new backpacks and other essential school supplies. With the support of Senator Kemp Hannon, Senator Elaine Phillips, Target and Burger King, the Long Island Nets will be able to provide thousands of school supplies to the Uniondale School District and other Town of Hempstead beneficiaries through the program. Beginning now through August 20th, the Long Island Nets will be collecting school supplies at various locations throughout Nassau County, which will be distributed to students in advance of the 2017-2018 school year. For a full list of Nassau County drop-off locations visit: www.longislandnets.com/ StuffABus Community members are asked to participate by donating new school supplies and backpacks. Suggested items for donation include binders, colored pencils, erasers, glue sticks, notebooks, pencils, pens, and backpacks. The deadline for donations to be collected through the Long Island Nets is Sunday, August 20th. The initiative will culminate with “Stuff-ABus” Day at NYCB LIVE, home of the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, on Wednesday, August 23rd, from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. in the Exhibition Hall.
