A local art studio is offering a workshop at Adelphi University on Thursday, August 21st, to help people design their own Creative Cups - turning ordinary bras into works of art - for the Creative Cups Fund Raiser that will be held next March. Artists Denise Collins and Laura Bykowski, owners of The Mermaid Art Studio of Long Beach, will guide participants in the design of their Creative Cups and help them reach their artistic vision. They will also help participants with the registration and submission process. The completed bras are due by October 15th, 2014. The workshop will run from 10 a.m. to noon and is located on the Adelphi campus at Adele and Herbert J. Klapper Center for Fine Art, Ceramics Studio, Room 104, located at the south end of the campus off of Cambridge Avenue. It is also home to a wig bank where those losing their hair can choose a wig to wear during the course of their treatment. On Wednesday, August 6th, Circle of Hope is hosting its seventh monthly “Cooking for Hope” series of classes, where teens learn to cook various Jewish foods, and then bring their creations to people in need. Moms are welcome to participate at this session. During each session, teens will have the opportunity to learn to cook a variety of Kosher dishes, from soups to kugels to rugelach, all the while bringing hope and happiness to those coping with illness. Merrick resident Sheri Fisch will lead the cooking instruction and demonstration each month. At the sixth session, teens cooked salmon teriyaki, broccoli souflee, kugel, chocolate cake, and more, before dropping off the food to families in need. Circle of Hope, a project

Last time I checked the calendar, it was August. Not back-to-school, not Halloween, and certainly not Christmas. And yet, if you look in the stores these days, you would think it was time to start digging out the decorations and making those shopping lists. I’m all for preparation and not waiting until the absolute last minute, but isn’t this all a little much? When I was a student in school, I didn’t consider it the “end of summer” until the end of August, as Labor Day approached. The beginning of August meant that summer was still only half over, with

just over a month of fun in the sun remaining. Plenty of beach days, baseball games, outdoor concerts, BBQs… But for parents and teachers, I suppose this isn’t the case. It’s all about the mad dash to get back into some sort of routine. Of course, nowadays, my routine is pretty much the same throughout the year, summer or winter. But still, I try to revel in the slightly laid back atmosphere that this season brings. Instead of driving home in the dark to sit on the couch in front of the TV, the added daylight hours provide some motivation to check out one of the many waterfront dining options

on Long Island, or perhaps attend one of the free summer concerts featured at the area parks. (Just don’t forget to check the weather forecast before heading out!) It’s August 6th. AUGUST 6th. Absorb it. Savor it. Live it. Stop checking the days off the calendar in a manic countdown to the next socalled marker of time… time that, before you know it, will have passed, un-enjoyed. So put away the Christmas lights, hold off on the pumpkin picking and don’t pack the bathing suit away quite yet. Relax. You’ll have plenty of time for all that in a few months. But not now.

In 2012, the Rockville Centre Fire Department received a federal grant for $865,225 to help attract 80 new volunteers to the RVCFD and provide incentives for specialty training. Now in its second year, the RVCFD has added 36 new members to the department and is hoping to build on that number. “The Rockville Centre Fire Department has over 100-years of tradition and service with an unwavering commitment to all who live in and around our Village,” commented Mayor Francis X. Murray, a 40-year member of Rescue I. “This program allows that tradition to grow and flourish into the future.” The four-year recruitment and retention program is funded through the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response [SAFER] program, administered through the United States Department of Homeland

Security and FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program. The grant also provides tuition reimbursement for members attending college, physicals for new members, personal protective gear that includes a helmet, bunker gear (coats and pants), a protective hood, gloves and boots. In addition, each new member receives station gear that includes work shirts, work pants, hats, and work boots. “Each and every day, firefighters in our community sacrifice their time and risk their safety to keep our loved ones safe,” added Chief John Thorp. “I can’t stress how important volunteerism is to the ongoing success and well-being of our department. Programs like this help to enhance firefighter safety and provide invaluable service for our community.” With 348 volunteers,

the RVCFD remains one of the largest all Volunteer Fire Departments in New York State. During 2013, the RVCFD answered more than 2,400 alarms, including over 1,400 calls for emergency medical services; over 1,000 other alarms which included over 100 automobile accidents, many with personal injury, over 400 reports of fire alarms, 65 carbon monoxide alarms, vehicle fires, brush fires, elevator rescues, and other incidents. In addition, the department acted on over 30 requests for mutual aid assistance from neighboring fire departments. Residents who wish to join the Rockville Centre Fire Department are urged to stop by any of the five firehouses on a Sunday morning, or may call 516678-9320, for information on becoming a Firefighter, Fire Medic or a Junior Firefighter.

Taking Home National Awards Plainedge High School were third in the nation in the Digital Cinema Production contest. The students proved their excellence in cinematography in their short film “The Gift.” The award-winning film demonstrated the effects and difficulties surrounding Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, and the protagonist ultimately began to overcome the disorder when he focused

Since 2007, Canstruction® Long Island has held its annual competition where teams of design and construction professionals, college students and middle and high school students led by architects and engineers, showcase their talent and creativity by creating giant, selfsupporting structures out of cans of non-perishable food. Student Teams are mentored by professionals in the architecture, engineering, design and construction fields, which provides the younger students with exposure to these potential career fields at an early age, and gives the older students an opportunity to develop relationships with professionals that they can possibly intern or interview with in the future. Film Festival Submissions From November 3rd through 9th, the Gold Coast Arts Center in collaboration with the Town of North Hempstead will present the 4th annual Gold Coast International Film Festival (GCIFF), and everyone’s invited - again - to join us for fantastic films, parties, panels, and fanfare! The feature films at the Festival are curated and the category is not open to individual submissions; however there is still room for the very best in short films to make the cut and submissions are being accepted at the website at www.goldcoastfilmfestival. org through the online platform Film Freeway. Short film awards include both a jury award and an audience award, and are accompanied by prizes, which may include rental equipment, postproduction services, etc. The late deadline for

submissions is September 26th. The festival has brought the latest Hollywood hits and Indie favorites to the Gold Coast of Long Island over the past several years, and add A-list celebrities and unforgettable events to the mix and its easy to see why GCIFF has become the “go to” Festival for film buffs (it is also the last major film festival on the East Coast before Awards season). Last year, the Festival honored legendary actor, Paul Sorvino (GoodFellas, Bulworth, The Cooler) with a Lifetime Achievement Award during their Annual Benefit Gala.
