TAKING A LOOK BACK! In honor of our retro-themed newspaper issue, I decided to spotlight an older article I wrote last year. The article is below and is about an eco-friendly non-profit on Long Island that strives to help conserve our island. Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is a non-profit volunteer ran organization that is committed to improving the quality of life on Long Island Shores. Their mission is to provide a low cost solution to the growing problem of waterfront pollution through public awareness, community action and your participation. S.P.L.A.S.H. stands for Stop Polluting, Littering and Save Harbors.
They have rescued 2,498,267 pounds of trash from our waters in 28 years! The amazing impact that Long Island Waterways sees from the work of Operation S.P.L.A.S.H. is something each of us should be thankful for! This organization holds Beach, Bay and Waterway Clean-Ups and operates several other projects such as Street Storm Drains, OceanBay Water Exchange, No Wake Zones, Clean Marina Program, Youth Education Programs and more. They have 7 boats that go out in our waterways to patrol and pickup trash and debris between March and November. All of the boats are operated by volunteer captains and crews that give their time to go out on clean-up trips. Clean-up trips usually last about 3 hours. After their boats are taken out of the water for the season, they bring them back to their Freeport headquarters and immediately start to work on them to get them ready for the next season.

National Grid Warns Customers Of Latest Payment Phone Scam Imposters call customers, demand immediate payment, threaten to shut off service
National Grid is warning customers to beware of a new phone scam where imposters are demanding immediate bill payment and threatening service disconnection. This latest scam, which is targeting customers already facing hardships due to COVID-19, involves callers who pretend to be National Grid representatives. They tell customers that unless payment is made within 30 minutes, their power will be shut off. The customer is then directed to call “the direct billing department to make a payment and avoid power disconnection.” The scammers use sophisticated phone systems that display
National Grid on the customer’s caller ID. Additionally, the phone number customers are instructed to call closely resembles the company’s recorded messaging and phone prompt directions. These elements make it difficult to differentiate an actual National Grid call from an imposter’s call. When in doubt, customers should hang up and call the National Grid customer service number on their bill. National Grid reminds customers that on March 13, the company temporarily suspended collections-related activities, including service disconnections, to lessen any financial hardship brought on by

Armor Museum Opens With COVID-19 Protocols And A Motivational “Call To Arms” From World War II How to motivate visitors to maintain social distancing upon entering the Museum of American Armor? The Armor Museum has enlisted the Army. The Museum of American Armor, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, has teamed up with Dr. Erik Villard, Digital Military Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History, to present his innovative reinvention of motivational posters first created by the War Department during World War II. From G.I.s prepared to throw hand sanitizers (as opposed to hand grenades), to a masked Uncle Sam leading a charge against COVID, the posters will be situated throughout the museum, adjacent to its tanks, artillery pieces, and uniformed mannequins. Dr. Villard explained, “I already have a massive collection of these posters. I just looked through them and thought, ‘Okay, which ones could be modified, so that they keep something of the original spirit, but would be applicable to the
Covid crisis?’ “Some of the posters are kind of the traditional attack / over the top variety; but then others, like the ‘Knowledge Wins’ poster are more informationbased. Certain images will resonate with some people, and others will prefer a
different approach,” he continued. Museum of American Armor founder and president, Lawrence Kadish, stated, “We are following all the CDC protocols which allowed the museum to open on July 31st, but we wanted to make sure that our visitors’ behavior remained the first line of defense against spreading COVID-19. These imaginative reenvisionings of classic military posters by Dr. Villard are designed to get your attention, focus on COVID precautions, and to do so in a setting that reminds you America has gotten through much worse when it pulled together.” The Museum of American Armor has some 40 operational military vehicles under cover within Nassau County’s Old Bethpage Village Restoration. Its re-opening hours are Friday to Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. An admission donation of $15 for adults is requested, $10 for seniors and veterans, and $8 for children.

Jordan Margolis, the Levittown Public Schools’ assistant director of special education, was named the new principal of East Broadway Elementary School. He replaces former East Broadway Principal Jeanmarie Wink who retired at the end of the 2019-2020 school year. Mr. Margolis, a resident of Babylon, has served as the district’s assistant director of special education since 2015. He showcased his exceptional leadership abilities in this role as he maintained special education programs and services, chaired the social-emotional learning
curriculum committee, developed and supported crisis intervention protocols throughout the district, and more. Prior to his assistant director position, Mr. Margolis was a school social worker at Jonas E. Salk Middle School where he supported students and their families, along with staff through various programs, services, SEL and character education initiatives. He began his career as a lecturer at Assumption University in Bangkok, Thailand where he taught English to freshmen and held tutoring classes. His work continued in New

She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary and Special Education from SUNY College at Geneseo, her Master of Science in Education degree in Literary from CUNY Queens College and her advanced certificate for

East Broadway Welcomes New Principal
The annual Over 50 Fair, in its 11th year, will be a virtual charity conference benefitting The INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). Usually the Over 50 Fair takes place at an area hotel and has attendance of 500-700 who enjoy its 30 exceptional classes, singles lounge, senior beauty queens, and more. Because of COVID-19, this year’s
event can be enjoyed by computer or phone on September 12 and 13 from 12-4 each day. 10 local speakers, some of whom are experts in their field, will be sharing information about a variety of topics of interest to Baby Boomers and seniors, including long term care insurance, a comedy show, Microsoft training, reverse mortgages, and cleaning
without chemicals. The Over 50 Fair is the brainchild of East Hills resident Barbara Kaplan, who also coordinates the hugely successful All Kids Fair each year. She said that the Over 50 Fair is always “Overflowing with Opportunities for Age 50+,” although this year is a bit scaled down due to being virtual. The exciting weekend-
long 2020 Over 50 Fair will be a fundraiser for The INN, a local non-profit that helps provide assistance to the hungry, needy, and homeless right here on Long Island. After 14 years as principal of East Broadway Elementary School in the Levittown Public Schools, Jeanmarie Wink did not expect her final school year before retirement to end with a global pandemic. The East Broadway PTA, Assistant Principal Milton Josephs, district administrators, board members, families and students wanted to give the beloved principal the farewell she deserved. Together, they participated in a surprise retirement parade on June 17 in front of Mrs. Wink’s house in Seaford. More than 100 cars lined the road at the front of
East Broadway Elementary School to prepare for the event. Participants decorated their vehicles and made signs. The PTA organized a DJ to serve as the emcee and provide music for the parade in the front of Mrs. Wink’s home. Members of the East Broadway community and Levittown Public Schools honked their horns as the DJ called Mrs. Wink outside for the big surprise. Her family members were right behind her and were in on the celebration. As each car passed, parade participants wished Mrs. Wink best wishes on her retirement as they held up their signs and handed
her cards, gifts and flowers. The high-energy parade lasted about 45 minutes and when it concluded, Mrs. Wink was overcome with emotions. “It’s been quite a journey,” she said. “Thank you for this. I don’t think I could be happier than right now.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Tonie McDonald congratulated Mrs. Wink and told her how much she will be missed. In addition, East Broadway PTA members presented her with a gift and Mr. Josephs handed her binders filled with something special by each student in the school.
