Representatives from the Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC) virtually joined thousands of substance use and misuse prevention specialists and community coalition advocates from July 9 - 15, 2021, for CADCA’s (Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America’s) 20th Annual
Mid-Year Training Institute. “Our coalition was honored to be part of CADCA’s Mid-Year Training Institute,” says Janet Lombardo, LCAC Project Coordinator. “During the week, we worked on building our skills and strategies to address substance misuse
issues throughout the Levittown and Island Trees Communities. We also had the opportunity to network and share strategies with fellow coalition leaders, which sparked new substance misuse prevention ideas to incorporate into our community.” LCAC is a Drug Free
Communities grant recipient, which enabled it to send four students to CADCA this year. Youth coalition members participated in sessions that encouraged them to think critically about their roles as leaders in social change. Youth participants left the course with substance use and
misuse prevention tools including a Logic Model, Community Assessment, Interventions and an Action Plan. Sofia Ferreiro, a student at Division Avenue and Vice President of LCAC’s youth coalition, Levittown Y.O.U.T.H. (Young Organizers United to Help), was selected to present during the youth session’s closing ceremonies. “LCAC is so proud of our youth for participating and having the desire to learn more about the ways they can influence positive change in their community,” said Evanthia Mamtsaderis, Youth Advisor – YES Community Counseling Center. This year’s CADCA Mid-
Year Training Institute was originally scheduled to be held in Chicago, Illinois. Due to continuing safety precautions for the Covid-19 pandemic, the event was alternatively provided as an online training experience, centered around the theme of “Every Day CADCA Trains: Community Coalition Leaders.” More than 100 sessions were offered over five days of training for adults, youth, and international prevention advocates featuring a plethora of topics. Mid-Year attendees also had the opportunity to open a dialogue with

Mepham’s Brenda Dolan Named NYSSCOGS Coach Of The Year The New York State Sportswriters and Coaches Organization for Girls Sports has named Mepham High School girls varsity softball coach Brenda Dolan the New York State Class A Coach of the Year. Dolan has completed three seasons
as the head coach of the Mepham team, leading the girls to their first Long Island Class A Championship on June 19 with a win against Miller Place High School. “I genuinely appreciate that the softball organization and my
coaching colleagues have recognized the good work and success of our team,” said Dolan. “I have always attributed my coaching success to the players and coaching staff; without each of them buying into the philosophy of FAMILY – playing for the

We hope that Mepham softball will be back to defend the Long Island championship and push for a New York State championship next year!” In addition to being named the 2021 Class A New York State Coach of the year, Dolan was honored in 2019 as the Conference 1 Coach of the Year, Section VIII Coach of the Year and Newsday’s Nassau County Coach of the Year. She is quick to offer her thanks to those individuals who prepared
her for a successful coaching career. “I believe in creating unity and family with teams,” said Dolan. “This is something that I have been blessed with learning as an athlete during my time at Elmont High School. I am truly thankful to the coaches that paved the path of my coaching career, including Terry Ianniello (Elmont High School), Don Laux (Elmont High School), Nancy Dolan (Molloy College) and Bob Houlihan (Molloy
College).” Above all, however, she offers her thanks to her student-athletes at Mepham. “At Mepham, I am able to work with some of the most talented softball players on Long Island,” Dolan said. “These athletes give tirelessly of themselves…I am extremely honored to have coached at Mepham the past three seasons.” The district congratulates Dolan on this tremendous recognition.
HPV Vaccination Though there may not be a cancer vaccine, that does not mean that vaccinations cannot play a role in cancer prevention. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, some cancers, including cervical cancer and cancers of the vulva and oropharynx, are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV. The CDC notes that the HPV vaccine protects people against the types
of HPV that most often cause cancers. Adults can discuss the benefits of HPV vaccinations with their physicians, as the CDC notes that adults between the ages of 27 and 45 may have already been exposed to HPV, meaning the HPV vaccination will provide less benefit. Parents should know that the CDC recommends the HPV vaccination for preteens aged 11 to 12 years.
