The program, coordinated by the district’s music department, was held at East Meadow High School and ran from June 27th through July 29th. It invited students in grades 4-12 to strengthen their musical abilities and socialize with other student-musicians.

Nassau BOCES has earned a $150,000, threeyear research grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). The grant will fund the multiphase project, “Building Community and Capacity for DataIntensive EvidenceBased Decision Making in Schools and Districts.” The project is designed to improve the way districts use data to inform instruction. The NSF grant project is a collaborative partnership between Nassau BOCES and the Teachers College, Columbia University, and will focus on maximizing the usefulness of the Nassau BOCES Data Warehouse for educators. abilities and socialize with other student-musicians through ensemble rehearsals. Within the program, students enrolled in one of four instructional courses. The Beginner Instrumental module was for those entering grades 4-6 who had never played a band or orchestra instrument. The Intermediate Band/ Orchestra and Advanced Band/Orchestra welcomed experienced performers in middle and high school,

respectively. New this year was the Advanced Choral session for experienced vocalists entering eighth grade through high school, designed to improve their vocal ability, tone and rhythm. The program concluded with a series of student concerts for the community, which were held July 26th through 28th, at 7 p.m. and July 29th, at 9 a.m.

Continued From 3 writer Dr. Alex J. Bowers, an Associate Professor of Education Leadership at the Teachers College, Columbia University, sees tremendous potential in the data warehouse. By the end of the grant, Nassau BOCES may be poised to serve as a national model of what a data warehouse should be. Year one of the grant will focus on collecting and analyzing information from Nassau County school districts. The Teachers College, Columbia University will conduct a large-scale survey to determine how effectively educators are able to get the data they need from the data warehouse and how they are using that data to inform instruction. Results of the survey will help to improve the current data warehouse system to better serve the needs of educators, as well as to strengthen professional development opportunities. “This is an extremely significant opportunity for Nassau County school districts,” said Dr. Valerie D’Aguanno, Assistant Director of the Nassau BOCES Department of Curriculum, Instruction and Technology. “This project is the first of its kind. We’re helping school leaders to maximize their use of instructional data, while making professional development more intuitive for educators. We, at Nassau BOCES, are excited about the collaboration with Teachers College, Columbia University and believe that it could become a long term partnership.”

Community Service Partners Four North Bellmore School District students were recently recognized by the board of education and the Bellmore Lions Club for their community service project proposals. Lions Club International is the largest service organization in the world, and the district partnered with the Bellmore chapter to participate in the Service Project Letter Campaign. More than 400 fifth- and sixth-grade North Bellmore students entered the contest, submitting letters that described service projects that would benefit their community. This partnership was in keeping with the district’s mission statement, which emphasizes “contributing to our global community with creativity and

compassion.” When it first began, the Lions Club announced that it would implement one idea as a community service project. So impressed with the students’ entries, the Lions picked four. There were three winners from Saw Mill Road School including sixth-grader Louis Sedita for his idea of a community cleanup, sixth-grader Maria Torres for her crayon and coloring book collection for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and fifth-grader Aidan Connor for a DVD collection to benefit to medical facilities. Park Avenue School sixthgrader Nicholas Carrano received honorable mention for his proposed community cleanup. The four students were honored by the school

board in June, receiving certificates and checks from the Lions Club. Maria’s project has been completed, and the others will be done after the new school year begins. “All of the entries were thoughtful, meaningful and community-oriented ideas that evidenced the students’ understanding of the need and value of serving the community,” said Superintendent Marie Testa, who is also a member of the Lions Club along with Board President Nina Lanci. “We are extremely proud of the four students whose ideas will benefit the North Bellmore community and beyond. Thank you to the Lions Club for the opportunity to be a partner in service.”

As of this writing, I have published 573 columns. During the course of those, it has often occurred to me that some – mainly those with more of a personal touch – would make a solid foundation for a mini-memoir of sorts, a highlight reel of those experiences which have shaped the last decade or so of my life. I recently took the time to scan through each one, briefly, with an eye on setting aside those which I felt were, at the very least, worth a second look. It’s amazing, when you read them one after another, how the narrative weaves together, providing a glimpse into whatever happened to be my thoughts at that particular moment in time. Sure, there were the fluffy, filler-type accounts of seasons changing and deadlines crunching, of miscellaneous

musings on life, and people; random rants and reader feedback. But among the hundreds were some solid accounts of current events, heartfelt profiles of loved ones, and momentous occasions in my life. And, of course, we can’t forget about Buddy’s 20 or so contributions to the cause, perhaps better suited for an illustrated children’s series in his own right. (We do know how he hates to share the spotlight.) This initial scan was just the first step; but, after two days of skimming, I had set aside close to one hundred of my favorites. Not a bad beginning. My hope, over time, is to provide the narration necessary to connect the dots, perhaps throw in some favorite quotations, photography to illustrate the progression… and see where it winds up.

It is, mostly, a project for me – a labor of love encompassing all those hobbies which I hold dear. Of course, if and when it all comes together, I would love to share it with my family and friends, and readers, if they would care to revisit this abridged anthology. In the interim, I welcome any feedback and suggestions those readers might care to offer – favorite columns, stories that stood out over the years, topics you would like to see covered in the coming weeks… anything at all. Fifteen Dogs Rescued Fifteen dogs recently rescued by the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter were adopted in less than 15 days, thanks to a concerted effort and media blitz spearheaded by Supervisor Anthony J. Santino. The canines, taken in by the shelter amid allegations of owner neglect, have all found

loving homes with local residents. “It is unfortunate that these 15 wonderful dogs were not always given the love and care that they deserved,” stated Santino. “However, thanks to the efforts of our staff, volunteers and town residents, these pups will go on to enjoy happy and

healthy lives.” The 15 dogs – 10 schnauzers, 4 Jack Russell Terriers and a chihuahua – were rescued from a North Merrick home by town animal control officers. News media reported that the 15 dogs were found in “unsanitary living conditions,” which included dog feces and

Wind Ensemble to Perform East Meadow High School’s wind ensemble has been invited to perform at the New York State School Music Association’s 81st annual Winter Conference at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center on Friday, December 2nd. The group has not received this prestigious honor since 1965. To qualify for this opportunity, the ensemble
