Aliandro Goncalves merited special honors for his performance. With an exceptionally high score on the PowerPoint 2016 Specialist Exam, Goncalves was named New York’s champion and selected to compete in Certiport’s 2018 Microsoft Office Specialist, U.S. National Championship. Students from both of the district’s high schools, who are enrolled in either one or both of the business department’s LIU High School Scholars program and Multimedia IV and Computer Literacy classes, are afforded the opportunity to take the exams. School Supply Drive Assemblyman David G. McDonough announced recently that in association with the John Theissen Children’s Foundation he is seeking the donation of school supplies for the 20182019 school year, which will then be distributed to underprivileged children from low-income families. “The John Theissen Children’s Foundation has been conducting a ‘Back-toSchool Program’ for many years. Back-to-school time can be extremely difficult for many children whose families cannot afford new clothes or school supplies. With your donation, you can make a child feel good about themselves and look forward to attending school,” said McDonough. “It has been my privilege to be able to participate in this program for the past 14 years.” Donations that are being sought are supplies that include, but are not limited to, backpacks, spiral notebooks, pencils, pens, crayons, markers and other classroom necessities. In addition, the foundation, through monetary donations, also provides new clothing for children to wear. The collection runs now

through September 4th between 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., daily. Items may be dropped off at Assemblyman McDonough’s District Office at 404 Bedford Avenue, Bellmore. For further information, please contact Assemblyman McDonough by calling

Some are relatively direct, with few bumps and curves along the way; others prove far more winding and full of detours. In the end, though, I believe we all reach the destination we are meant to. Eventually. Last week, I touched on some of the ways I go about my craft, and how my writing has evolved through the years. In speaking to the next generation of potential journalists, the best experience I can draw upon is my own. There was a time when I was in their shoes, sitting in high school classrooms and then college lecture halls, wondering where exactly this path I had chosen would lead. It was during those formative years that I looked to my own sources of inspiration in the writing field for guidance, absorbing their styles and studying their techniques for

some hint of how I could apply these skills to my own drafts and create a unique voice. Just today, in fact, I found myself perusing the archives of past “In Step” columns, searching for a tribute I had written following the passing of Ed Lowe, master storyteller, and one mentor I had the extreme good fortune to work with during my time here at South Bay. Seldom do we have the opportunity to meet our idols, let alone share in our mutual love of a particular craft. No matter the difference in age, or how vast the generational gap, there is simply no substitute for the wisdom of someone who has experienced those things you only dare to dream. If you had asked me back in my formative years where I saw myself in ten, fifteen years time, I probably would have shrugged and said, “Hopefully reporting from the clubhouse of the New York Yankees” or “traveling across the country ala Almost Famous, searching for the next big story to be featured in Rolling Stone Magazine.” Realistic? Perhaps

not entirely. But these were the people, and the positions, I admired from afar and wished to emulate. Maybe it was the sense of prestige I found attractive, the celebrity aspect. Fast forward into the real world of adulthood, and it wasn’t long before I discovered that, if you truly have a love for writing - or any particular skill - it truly doesn’t matter where you do it, what the topics entail or how much notoriety you gain in the process. The fact is, you can make a significant difference on any level, even within the confines of the local community you grew up in, surrounded by the family, friends and local followers you may be fortunate to gain along the way. And that is exactly what has happened, from this desk in Farmingdale, as I put fingertips to keyboard each week, drawing from my own life experiences and those who have inspired me. The path may not always be clear, but the passion has never wavered. That, above all else, is what makes the journey worthwhile.

After 17 columns centering around a variety of subjects, it’s now a good time for this story to center around a hypothetical local individual, who I believe represents many people living and working on the Island and, in this case, his experience with customer service during a shopping trip. For confidentiality purposes, certain names and situations have been modified. Our subject is Mr. Josh Bozo, a born and bred Long Islander. Married to his childhood sweetheart, he now has three grown children. Josh attended the local public school, then went on to a local college where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Finance. He continues to work for a Long Island company, which he joined right after college. This was interrupted when he was drafted into the army, where he served in Vietnam, earning a Purple Heart for being wounded in action. He never talks about his service experience, and prefers it that way. Mr. Bozo reads Newsday during the week, and the New York Times on Sunday. He rarely watches television, with CNN being his favorite. He also dislikes talking about politics, but he makes no secret about his dissatisfaction with current affairs both in the United States and overseas. With his financial background, he closely watches the actions/decisions from the Federal Reserve Board on interest rates. Regarding his weekly activities, he usually shops once a week at a local supermarket, more

out of habit than anything else. The following is a true account of his shopping experience with customer service and the resultant action that followed. (You can’t make this stuff up!) The day began with a heavy downpour, high humidity and wind. Josh thought for a moment about cancelling shopping that day, and waiting for tomorrow. However, being a creature of habit, he put on his rain gear and headed to the supermarket. Finding a parking space was not difficult and, in spite of the heavy rain, he made a dash for the shopping carts. Unfortunately, in spite of repeated jerks, the shopping cart was firmly stuck into the one in front of it. Josh gave one last mighty push, which finally freed the cart, but in doing so, scraped his right thumb, which began to immediately bother him. Entering the first store, Josh immediately went to the deli counter, where he planned to stock up on a week’s supply of sandwiches for the family. When he arrived, he was distressed to see that there were three customers in front of him, but no deli clerks in sight. Everyone was annoyed until finally one clerk appeared and, with a bored look, started to help the first customer. Josh waited (not so patiently) to be served and, upon leaving the deli counter, noted that it had taken over 15 minutes to be served. Oh well. Upon reaching the next aisle, he noted that his favorite bread was on sale today; but when he got to the shelves, there was no bread, with

that shelf empty. As he was standing there, another delivery rep with a different brand told him that the rep he was looking for usually came in late and had not shown up yet. Josh had no choice but to select another brand, which now was beginning to put him a bad mood. Upon reaching the third aisle, he noted that in front of where he purchased his favorite cream cheese, a standing wall display had been placed directly in front of it. He noticed what looked like an employee a few feet away and asked him to help him remove the display. The man looked up and said, “Sorry, but I don’t work here…I’m just adjusting some shelves.” At that point, Josh strained and pushed the display away, then noticed with disgust that the cream cheese he wanted was out of stock! Josh doesn’t quite remember the rest of this sad tale, but on his way out of the store, he remembered that he forgot a few things. No way was he going back, but instead chose to drive a short distance to one of his favorite specialty stores. Upon parking at the new store, Josh noted that all of the shopping carts were neatly arranged in front of the store, and one came out easily in his hands. As he entered, a young lady greeted him saying, “Welcome! Can I help you?” Well, Josh thought, what a nice way to start his shopping! He had no trouble finding an assortment of things, and especially liked the free coffee

that they were serving in the rear of the store. The clerk behind the counter even said “good morning” to him. The check-out clerk was just as pleasant and, noting that he was wearing his old army cap, said, “Thank you for your service…and have a nice day.” Upon entering his car, Josh recalled how unpleasant his first store visit had been compared to the really pleasant one he just experienced. Although still a creature of habit, he decided that, in the future, he would do a great more shopping at this specialty store. AFTERTHOUGHT: Perhaps some of you got a chuckle out of Bozo’s sad experience in the first store, yet a few might even think the story was made up (it was not). My guess is that this type of unhappy experience has happened over time to many of my readers. If you would like to share them, please contact me. The whole point of this column is to reinforce the importance of good customer service. In my line of work, I speak with and see many examples of both good and bad customer experiences. Remember that today’s customers are sharper and more discriminating than the ones before them and, most importantly, it’s far easier to keep a customer than to acquire a new one. Point made. Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for 30 years and has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering a considerable amount, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping those in need look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island.

Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. Eileen is very dedicated to The Emergency Shelter of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church in Wyandanch, where she provides her services for free to their residents when they are open in the winter months. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each

Music Skills Soar

Approximately 65 students from the Levittown Public Schools are utilizing their time this summer to begin a new instrument or enhance their musical abilities with the district’s Summer Instrumental Music Program from July 2nd through August 9th at Abbey Lane Elementary School. The annual summer program is open to those entering grades 3-12 in the district and offers two half-hour group lessons each week for students. With the guidance of summer music coordinator Iris Winter and music teachers Jill Castillo and Matthew Nobile, students receive

personalized instruction with small class sizes in either band or orchestra. For those that are new to a specific instrument, the summer program provides a head-start for students to familiarize themselves, while the program allows continuing musicians to practice and strengthen their craft. “It is important for the

kids to continue their musical studies over the summer, not so much to become ‘virtuosos,’ but to stay in musical shape,” said Winter. “To keep what they have learned throughout the school year fresh in their minds and overall because it’s fun - new music, new ideas and even new friends.”

Sizzlin’ Summer L e a r n i n g continues during the summer months as approximately 60 English Language Learners throughout the Levittown Public Schools engaged in the district’s annual English as a New Language Jumpstart Program for three weeks. Opened to kindergarten through sixth-grade students at the Levittown Memorial Education Center, the program aims to strengthen Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math, English Language Arts and health and wellness skills into a threehour day. District teachers guide the students through engaging lessons and activities from reading and writing, to outdoor STEAM activities which focus on teamwork and

problem solving. The summer program was established 19 years ago in the district and has served as a positive experience for students, growing each year with the expansion of the program’s curriculum. Just this summer, older English Language Learners honed their reading skills by partnering with the district’s Summer Reading Extravaganza. All incoming sixthgraders are required to read “Because of Mr. Terupt” by Rob Buyea. During the program, students receive support while reading and create a meaningful dialogue with their peers about the story to prepare them for corresponding reading assignments in the fall. With the help of coordinator and ENL
