Alfredo Torres, MD has joined the team of medical oncologists at New York Cancer & Blood Specialists. Dr. Torres will be practicing at our Port Jefferson, Setauket, and Smithtown locations. Dr. Torres is a third generation physician in his family and knew early on, that medicine was his passion. A native of Venezuela, Dr. Torres credits the skills he has developed to limited access to medical resources. “I grew up in a country filled with opportunities and hope. Summer Science Inquiry Middle school students are engaged in high energy learning this summer at the Levittown School District’s first STEM Camp, where they are participating in daily inquiry that focuses on science, technology, engineering and math. Science Director Kevin McDermott retooled last year’s robotics camp to include a greater diversity of activities, and enrollment doubled. This year, 85 sixth, seventh and eighth graders from the district took part in the two-week STEM program, which began on July 15 at Wisdom Lane Middle School. Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives and they help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) announced the grand opening of its newest treatment facility, at 49 Route 347, in Port Jefferson Station on Monday, July 29th, 2019. Students Honored As State Champions

A dozen students from Nassau BOCES Barry Tech took top honors at the New York State SkillsUSA Leadership and Skills Championships, held in Syracuse this spring. These students participated in a series of timed events related to their courses of study at Barry Tech, as well as in competitions in leadership and professional development. The winners were honored by the BOCES Board for their impressive performances and received official certificates congratulating them on their respective wins. The Board honored seven first-place winners. Two were part of the American Spirit Team: Tatiana Cornejo of the Island Trees UFSD and Nicole Linares of the Long Beach City SD, both of whom are Medical Assisting students. Two were members of the Audio/Radio Production Team: Jordan Rothman of the Lynbrook UFSD and Blake Grossman of the Hicksville UFSD, both of whom are studying Audio Production. Two competed in the Interactive Application and Video Gaming category:

Christopher Jimenez of the Glen Cove City SD and Matthew King of the Uniondale UFSD, both of whom are studying Computer Game Design. Amanda Gray of the Wantagh UFSD, who is studying Culinary Arts, was honored for her first place in the Cake Decorating category. Two Barry Tech students were honored for taking second place at the Championships, both as members of the Digital Cinema Production Team: Leslie Cruz of the Westbury UFSD and Jonathan LaPlaca of the Manhasset UFSD are both studying Video Production. Two third place winners were honored: Alexander Dupre of the Bethpage UFSD, a Veterinary Science student at Barry Tech, earned third place in the Animal Careers category; Maverick Kandel of the East Meadow UFSD, who is studying Culinary Arts, took third in Commercial Baking. John O’Meara of the Farmingdale UFSD was honored by the Board for earning a distinguished office with SkillsUSA as a national

delegate representing New York State. Considerable effort goes into qualifying for the annual SkillsUSA competition. All Barry Tech students have a double workload, completing not only their Barry Tech assignments, but also satisfying full courses of study at their home schools. Add to that the intensive training that it takes to earn the privilege of competing in SkillsUSA, and it becomes clear how tirelessly these students work. The competition is part of SkillsUSA’s mission to provide our country with a competitive, skilled workforce. SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry leaders working together to prepare high school and college students to become leaders in the business world. The program helps establish industry standards for jobskill training and instills a respect for community service in its participants. The U.S. Department of Labor recognizes SkillsUSA as a “successful model of an employer-driven youth development program.”

The Reading Fire Stays Lit The East Meadow School District Summer Learning Program welcomed students in pre-K through fifth grade for the inaugural LitCamp at Bowling Green Elementary School during the month of July. Developed by Director of Literacy and Funded Programs Frank Lukasik and staff throughout the elementary schools. The camp serves as a forum for reading, discussion, writing and learning while also enjoying songs and games together. At LitCamp, students participate in projects and activities to strengthen their literacy and

mathematics skills. One of the themes discussed at the camp is the seven strengths – belonging, friendship, kindness, curiosity, courage, confidence and hope. By acknowledging their own strengths, students can begin to see themselves as readers who are facing struggles with joy and purpose. “We work toward developing fluency, comprehension and stamina, as well as strengthening students’ self-concept while building resilience,” said Mr. Lukasik. Activities include partner

reading, book reviews, class discussions and one of the most enjoyed stations, “Bunk Tent Time” where students created “camplike” tents in the classrooms for silent reading. During “Bunk Tent Time,” students select their own books to match the day’s theme. Mr. Lukasik encourages families to continue developing the lessons and skills their children learned at LitCamp while at home. “When you sing together, read together, share family stories and talk together, you are helping your student become a strong reader,” he said.

Alternative Program Graduates Nine Alexander touched on his thankfulness to the MAP teaching and support staff. “They worked tirelessly to make sure we have a great education and are prepared for the future,” he said. “While doing this, they made sure we are actively engaged, and that we have fun while doing so.” As a MAP graduation tradition, Principal Susan Ellinghaus invites an alumnus to address current graduates. Joseph Calvaruso from the Class of 2017, spoke about his path at MAP and the lessons he has taken with him. “I realized I needed to make a change,” he explained. “I needed to go

to MAP. I was given a second chance I so desperately needed and became the man I am today. Most importantly, it was here that I learned to never give up.” Dr. Joseph Netto, the program’s psychologist, offered the faculty address. “The obstacles in your path may have seemed so daunting, yet your individual perseverance allowed you to rise to the occasion,” he said. “And I strongly believe that [perseverance] is the most important lesson and skill that you have learned here at MAP. It is this individuality that will allow you to surpass mediocrity.”

Kennedy Cougars Celebrate At the June 30 commencement ceremony held at the NYCB Theatre at Westbury, the message for Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District’s John F. Kennedy High School’s Class of 2019 was one of kindness and compassion. Principal Gerard Owenburg also discussed the importance of gratitude. “Make every moment count,” he continued. “Life is about happiness and living in the moment. Those who practice gratitude and mindfulness regularly are happier overall in life.” He also urged graduates to make more human connections and to continue to “develop communication skills” in a world where digital communication

reigns supreme. Student Government President Jonathan Mashal called his classmates a “beacon of light and hope for the future.” “We are the problem solvers of tomorrow, paving the road for future generations,” he added. Salutatorian Whitney Sussman told her fellow classmates not to let other people’s measure of success define theirs. “What makes a person successful is their ability to make a positive impact on others,” she added. Valedictorian Jordan Pitti thanked teachers for the “culmination of positive interactions and life lessons both inside and out of the classroom.”

“They have helped us to focus on what we can do, not what we can’t do,” he added. Lastly, Board trustee Dr. Nancy Kaplan, spoke of transition; both at Kennedy this year with the passing of former Principal Lorraine Poppe and Owenburg’s first year as principal, as well as transition for the graduates who are moving on. “I hope you feel a sense of pride in your school and all you have already accomplished,” she added, attributing the legacy of education excellence to Poppe’s tenure. “You have so many more moments left [referencing Principal Owenburg’s speech] ‘make every moment count.’”
